Saka stopped £140k-p/w Arsenal Flop From Reaching Potential

When Nicolas Pepe signed for Arsenal in the summer of 2019 there was much fanfare.

It wasn't every day that the Gunners threw such vast sums of money around, as Unai Emery and co smashed the club's transfer record and shelled out £72m on the Ivorian.

Whether the winger had exceptional numbers or not, that was a lot of cash for someone who was still relatively unproven.

That said, when you welcome a new attacker through the door, there is always going to be widespread excitement.

Here was a player who had bagged 22 times in 38 Ligue 1 outings the campaign prior for Lille, proving himself to be one of the best in the French top flight.

Sadly, Pepe has and likely never will live up to his true potential at the Emirates Stadium.

What went wrong for Nicolas Pepe at Arsenal?

After being signed for such a huge price tag, you either sink or swim.

Chelsea are currently feeling the negative impacts of spending upwards of £88.5m on Arsenal target Mykhailo Mudryk in January, with the Ukranian so far having registered just a solitary assist during his nine outings in Blue.

There are worrying parallels to that of Pepe, who has also struggled significantly during his time on English shores.

Overall, the Ivory Coast international has found the net on 27 occasions while also supplying 21 assists. The quality of each goal is well measured too, with few boasting a better left foot across Europe.

Who can forget his dipping curler from the edge of the box against West Ham or his late free-kick against Vitoria Guimares in the Europa League that picked out the top corner.

Nicolas Pepe celebrates scoring a goal for Arsenal.

Sadly, that quality has been few and far between with the 27-year-old largely reduced to a role on the bench.

So unconvincing has the 6-foot wide man's time in the English capital been, that he's now back in France, on loan at Nice. His eight goals across all competitions are unspectacular and suggest that a lack of consistency still plagues Pepe.

That has been his biggest issue since that mega-money move, even if he did score 16 goals across the 2020/21 campaign.

That record is more than handy but the price tag involved always denoted that he should be reaching truly awe-inspiring numbers.

As such, it has rather harshly seen him labelled as the Premier League's "biggest flop" by African football journalist Ezzedine Said.

Pepe's best position is arguably on the right-hand side of an attack and because of that, it's unlikely he'll ever be a regular in this Arsenal team.

After all, the French-born asset has paid the price for Bukayo Saka's emergence on the scene, a young dazzling star who is now 'the best right winger in the world' – as per Arsenal's GOAL correspondent, Charles Watts.

Bukayo Saka celebrates scoring a goal for Arsenal.

Few would argue against that statement with the 21-year-old having scored three goals at the Winter World Cup, while registering 13 strikes and ten assists for Arsenal throughout the current campaign.

Pepe was always going to struggle to get in ahead of someone like that and it was typical that Saka's first full season of football came during the former Lille star's debut campaign in England.

Of course, the England international did start out as a left-back in this Arsenal side, but his swift progression into becoming a real Premier League star as a right-winger saw Pepe simply forgotten about.

Arsenal's current number 7 only actually played twice on that right-hand side during the 2019/20 campaign, but the following term, after the club's record-signing had scored just eight times, he featured on as many as 20 occasions from the right.

It was from that campaign that Saka leave Pepe in the dust, without a chance of ever reaching his true potential at the club. For the Gunners, that has only been positive. For the £72m man in question, though, it has left him without a permanent home for the 2022/23 campaign.

As a result, few would bet against the £140k-per-week flanker still being in Islington come next term.

Mark Goldbridge Rips Into £50k-p/w Chelsea Ace Vs Real Madrid

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher failed to impress talkSPORT's Mark Goldbridge during the Blues' 2-0 defat to Real Madrid, with the pundit left baffled by Frank Lampard's decision to start the youngster in such an advanced role.

How did Chelsea fare against Real Madrid?

Tuesday's meeting with the reigning European champions proved to be another disappointing night for the west Londoners, as they bowed of the top club competition in the world. Despite creating plenty of chances and actually dominating parts of the match, Chelsea succumbed to Madrid's ruthlessness, with two goals from Rodrygo sending the La Liga giants into the semi-finals.

It means that Lampard has now lost all four matches since returning to Stamford Bridge for a second spell as manager, and he will surely depart at the end of the season. The 44-year-old named a curiously defensive-looking starting lineup to face Madrid, with Gallagher playing off Kai Havertz, and the likes of Raheem Sterling, Mykhailo Mudryk and Joao Felix all left to watch from the substitutes' bench.

Ultimately, it was a team that didn't work in the end, with Gallagher not managing to have a major impact on proceedings and arguably looking out of his depth up against some world-class players.

What has Goldbridge said?

Taking to Twitter, talkSPORT host Goldbridge didn't hold back with his thoughts on Lampard's set-up, questioning why the £50k-per-week midfielder was saddled with the attacking responsibilities:

"Who picks Connor Gallagher at CAM when you need goals and benches Felix…"

In truth, this was an evening that did show Gallagher's limitations, as he came up against the likes of Tony Kroos, Luka Modric and Fede Valverde. That's not to say that he had no impact at all – he played two key passes and made one tackle and interception apiece – but he rarely looked like being the difference-maker in such a high-profile game.

Lampard's use of the midfielder arguably didn't help, with the 23-year-old used to the left of the attack and N'Golo Kante to the right, but it was a further sign that selling him this summer could make the most sense for all parties.

There certainly appears to be interest in him, with the likes of Liverpool and Newcastle United seemingly in the mix, and he could thrive as more of a key man elsewhere, with regular stats unlikely to come his way at Chelsea moving forward.

Gallagher's current Blues deal expires in the summer of 2025, but now could be the best time to earn a healthy amount of money for his services, rather than lose him this time next year when his value may have dropped.

وأتم: “خالد عبد الفتاح لاعب الأهلي ليس على رادار البنك الأهلي”.

Arsenal: "Awful" £200k-p/w Dud Has Cost Them The Title

Arsenal were mere bystanders as they watched their Premier League title hopes crumble last night, whilst Manchester City ran riot at the Etihad.

In what had turned into a must-win game for Mikel Arteta's side, given they had drawn their last three games prior, the Gunners were tactically, physically and technically outclassed by a Pep Guardiola outfit who will be quietly confident of now securing their treble.

Few from the visiting side managed to get in the game at all, and despite enjoying 48% of the ball, it never really felt like they were in control. Despite the dominance of the hosts, their goals largely came from capitalising on mistakes. When going toe-to-toe with arguably one of the greatest teams in history, anything less than perfection is not enough.

Simple errors and lapses in concentration afforded sloppy goals, and in the end, the 4-1 scoreline was fair – if somewhat sympathetic to Arsenal.

arsenal-thomas-partey-jack-grealish

Their lack of composure and constructed attacks can be attributed to the poor displays of their midfielders, who were run ragged by the magisterial Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian ran the show, only further cementing his legacy as one of the league's best-ever midfielders.

However, Thomas Partey was culpable on more than one occasion of allowing the 31-year-old to ghost past him. As the key defensive stopper in their engine room, this was unforgivable.

How did Thomas Partey play vs Manchester City?

Journalist Charles Watts sought to detail the key events throughout what turned into an abysmal night for the north London outfit, and on more than one occasion highlighted the deficiencies of the Ghana international.

For City's opener, he wrote: "Horrendous tracking of De Bruyne by Partey for the goal. It's a great finish, but Ramsdale really shouldn't be getting beaten by that."

He then berated the 29-year-old again, claiming: "De Bruyne is just finding so much space. He's just running off the back of Partey every time. Arsenal can't pick him up."

The statistics more than supported this lack of defensive solidity, as the midfielder would record just two tackles all game, being dribbled past once. His 95% pass accuracy suggests an economical display, but just one key pass is indicative of backward and sideways recycling of the play, as per Sofascore.

A lack of cutting-edge made the difference in a game they had to win, and Watts was left furious, branding Partey "awful" after the match.

Not only this, but his 57 touches were down dramatically from his average this season of 75.6 per game, highlighting the lack of influence the former Atletico Madrid man exerted.

Having been lauded in the past as a "machine" by journalist Simon Collings, the £200k-per-week enforcer seemingly ran out of steam when it mattered most.

Now just two points ahead of City having played two more games, the title truly is in their hands now. With Guardiola's side having also won their last seven league games on the run, this coveted piece of silverware is now essentially a foregone conclusion. This is not solely because of Partey's underperformance last night, but it certainly did not help.

Pundit Claims 2 Huge Errors Could Relegate West Ham

BBC pundit Chris Sutton has claimed that two recent big mistakes from officials could end up seeing West Ham United relegated at the end of the season.

What's the latest on VAR and West Ham?

In their last Premier League home game, the Irons may well have had a penalty when Danny Ings fired a shot which struck Thiago Alcantara's arm in the box. Contact was clearly made, but after a VAR review, nothing was awarded and Liverpool went on to pick up all three points.

Following that, West Ham then travelled away from home to take on Crystal Palace, but fell to a 4-3 defeat at Selhurst Park.

Controversy also surrounded this game, however, with Eberechi Eze winning a cheap penalty at the Hammers' expense, which led to the decisive goal of the game.

And while talking about these incidents on BBC Radio Show 606, Sutton slammed both calls and suggested they may end up costing David Moyes' men.

He said: "Do you know what? It wasn't a penalty. I thought Eze dived, went down too easily.

"But West Ham were wronged against Liverpool… ultimately two poor decisions could send West Ham down."

Can West Ham still be relegated?

It seems as though Sutton isn't the only one to feel as though West Ham have been hard done by in recent times with VAR not working in their favour.

Unsurprisingly, manager Moyes slammed the recent call against Palace, calling it "soft" on Match of the Day (via Daily Mail). He perhaps was even behaving himself on that occasion too, having been furious in light of the Liverpool decision.

Indeed, after Thiago's missed handball, the 59-year-old told the press: “I think the hardest thing is the disrespect from VAR. That VAR didn’t have at least said take a look, that’s them saying they don’t think it is a close decision.

“A lot of football people have seen a lot worse (handball decisions given) than that recently. Somebody in VAR didn’t have enough football knowledge to know that was close. Whoever it was chose not to send the referee.

David Moyes manages West Ham in their Premier League victory over Fulham.

“They need to apologise to the football club. We need to win points to say in the Premier League.”

Moyes is certainly right with that last point, West Ham still aren't safe from relegation with just 34 points after 33 games and could yet be dragged into the bottom three with five matches to play.

With that being the case, if the Irons do go down, these two major calls in back-to-back games could be viewed as a turning point.

Newcastle: Ashworth Plotting Swoop To Sign £17m Dynamo

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their plans to bolster their squad in the summer transfer window…

What's the latest on Carlos Augusto to Newcastle?

According to Italian outlet CalcioMercato, the Magpies are one of a number of clubs tracking Monza left-back Carlos Augusto ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The report claims that Inter and Juventus, along with some unnamed Premier League teams, are also keen on the defender, who is valued at around €20m (£17m) by his current club.

It is stated that Newcastle are eyeing up the enforcer with a view to making an offer for his services at the end of the season, particularly if they qualify for the Champions League.

Is Carlos Augusto better than Dan Burn?

Toon sporting director Dan Ashworth could land Eddie Howe an upgrade on current left-back Dan Burn with this proposed swoop to sign the Brazilian as his performances this term suggest that he is a better player.

Newcastle defender Dan Burn.

Burn, who is a central defender by trade, has started 32 matches in the Premier League this season and been a key component for the head coach throughout the campaign.

However, his average Sofascore rating of 6.77 ranks him 13th in the squad. He has also made 2.5 tackles and interceptions per game whilst winning 56% of his duels in the division.

Augusto, meanwhile, has averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.00 in the Serie A for Monza and won 55% of his battles whilst making 2.7 tackles and interceptions per match.

The 24-year-old machine has also scored six goals and provided five assists – creating five 'big chances' for his teammates – in his 31 appearances in the Italian top-flight.

Burn does not carry the same attacking threat as the Englishman has failed to produce a single goal or assist in the Premier League this season – creating just three 'big chances' in total.

These statistics suggest that the "impressive" – as he was once dubbed by journalist Josh Bunting – Monza star would come in as a big upgrade on the Newcastle defender due to his average performance level, his defensive contributions, and his quality on the ball in forward areas.

Augusto is also seven years younger than Burn and would come in with more long-term potential, to go along with possibly being an immediate upgrade on the full-back position.

Ashworth must now work hard to beat Inter and Juventus to his signature this summer.

Liverpool’s Anonymous £35m Dud Let Klopp Down v Brentford

Liverpool crept to yet another Premier League win yesterday, with a solid but unconvincing 1-0 victory over Brentford.

Jurgen Klopp will likely draw questions from his players for such a startlingly lacklustre display, but with it being their sixth straight league win, the German cannot be too frustrated. It finally feels like after some time the fear factor has returned to the Anfield outfit, just in time for a late European push.

With a few key additions this summer, building upon the slowly improving newbies from their current campaign, the Reds can surely expect a return towards the apex of the table in the coming years.

One of those newer acquisitions had been earning particular praise of late, as Cody Gakpo finally seemed to have found his feet on Merseyside despite a tumultuous start. Failing to score in his first three league games, as well as in two FA Cup clashes, the Dutchman began to draw scrutiny for his performances in relation to his £35m price tag.

liverpool-salah-gakpo-brentford

However, now boasting six league goals and two assists in 18 appearances, already the nation is starting to see glimpses of what the fuss was all about.

Despite this hype, integration into a new country remains a tricky feat. Not every game can be a success, and yesterday marked one of his weaker showings since moving from PSV Eindhoven.

How did Cody Gakpo play vs Brentford?

It is a testament to the underperformance of the 24-year-old that his 5.9 Sofascore rating was comfortably the worst of any player on the entire pitch. He was anonymous, wasteful, and yet someone survived for the full 90 minutes.

Such a low rating might come as a shock, but when delving deeper into his actual involvement, it quickly becomes clear why he was deserving of such a rating.

Firstly, the Netherlands international mustered just 32 touches all game despite his side enjoying 54% of the ball. For comparison, even his goalkeeper Alisson enjoyed more possession (38 touches).

Had Gakpo at least been efficient, such a lack of influence on the game could be forgiven. However, what exacerbated issues was that the wide man did boast golden chances, two of which he spurned. Such profligacy seeped into an absence of creativity too, as his 80% pass accuracy contained zero key passes made.

Goal’s Neil Jones perhaps summarised the Dutchman’s display best, awarding him a 6/10 rating, while writing that Gakpo ‘looked a little leggy in the second half and somehow didn’t score from virtually on the line.’

A tough day at the office offensively is often possible, but to cap off a truly forgettable afternoon, the 6 foot 4 trickster also lost eigakpoght of the 13 duels he competed in, suggesting that such a shocking display was born of complacency rather than misfortune.

That is something which Klopp will not forgive lightly, and it could cost him his place in the side next time out. His big January addition let him down yesterday.
