India strike late after Cook and Hameed show defiance

Ravi Jadeja struck with the final ball of the fourth day – trapping Alastair Cook lbw for a 188-ball 54 -to leave England 87 for 2 as they attempted to save the second Test

Compton: Umpire’s call leaves too much to debate

In an era of faster, harder, shorter – when the virtue of a young batsman is increasingly judged by strike-rate rather than overs endured – Haseeb Hameed produced a throwback innings to match that produced by his captain and opening partner, Alastair Cook, as England launched what already counts as a heroic rearguard, irrespective of what may come to pass on the fifth and final day at Visakhapatnam. While Cook and Hameed were in harness, calmly withstanding India’s best efforts throughout a magnificent opening stand of 75 that spanned 50.2 overs (which is longer, incidentally than four of Australia’s last eight completed innings), survival had seemed very much within England’s grasp – much as it had done for South Africa in similar circumstances 12 months ago, when AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla came together for another mighty blockathon in Delhi. But, in a devastating denouement in the final half hour before stumps, England lost both of their incumbents to a pair of memorable lbws – Hameed for 25 from 144 deliveries, pinned on the shin as R Ashwin grubbed an unplayable offbreak along the deck in a manner utterly reminiscent of Nasser Hussain’s shooter against Carl Hooper in 1997-98.Then, in the final over of the day, Cook, the rock of England’s resistance, played once too often across the line to Ravi Jadeja, and Kumar Dharmasena raised his finger. The umpire’s judgment was spot on on this occasion, for the ball was heading straight for middle and leg, but with India already out of reviews and Dharmasena’s relationship with DRS at an all-time low, he deserved credit for trusting his judgment at such a critical juncture. That late strike allowed India to leave the field with the spring back in their step, and Virat Kohli took the chance to gather his men into a huddle before they returned to the dressing room. India remain strong favourites on a surface that will compromise the more stroke-based techniques in England’s middle order – not least that of Ben Duckett, who is next man in to join Joe Root when play resumes tomorrow – but if any further proof were needed that this five-Test series will be a fight to the finish, this was it.Not for the first time in this match, England’s determination with the bat had been replicated with the ball. With Stuart Broad in another of his rhythmic moods, and with Adil Rashid mixing it impressively to claim four wickets in the morning session, including the prize scalp of Kohli for 81, it required a spiky tenth-wicket stand of 42 between Jayant Yadav and Mohammad Shami to revive India’s second innings, as they slipped from their overnight 98 for 3 to 204 all out on the stroke of a delayed lunch break.Of course, England’s success with the ball wasn’t entirely encouraging, given what it implied about the challenge of batting last, but they were happy to settle for pyrrhic victories wherever they could find them.Broad was particularly eager to strike some psychological blows. He may not feature in next week’s third match in Mohali but, buoyed by the confirmation that his foot injury was not as severe as he might have feared, he produced one of his most skilful spells of a stellar year, manipulating the old ball with cut and cross-seamers alike, and a variety of angles on the crease. He deserved more than just the scalps of Ajinkya Rahane and Ashwin for his morning efforts, as he finished with figures of 4 for 33 in 14 hard-pounding overs.Broad’s success was a reminder that seam, as well as spin, can play a part when surfaces start to crumble, and Hameed received a similarly timely reminder from the very first ball he received in England’s rearguard – a skiddy bouncer from Shami that rapped him on the glove as he took his eyes off the ball. But, when tea was taken 28 overs later, he was looking settled and solid, 12 not out from 84 balls, and oblivious to the attentions of up to four close catchers round the bat.It was a staggering display of technique, resolve and stamina way beyond his tender years, and further enhanced the impression that he is The One, as far as England’s long-term opening ambitions are concerned. However, Hameed could have asked for no better role model in his defiance than Cook, England’s past master in the art of batting time, whose long strides have been so adept for so long at smothering the attentions of Asian spinners.Kohli shuffled his pack largely in vain for the first 33 overs of England’s innings, resuming after tea with his seamers reunited but still no way through England’s defiance. But, then, suddenly, he hit upon the right formula, bringing Jadeja on at the Subba Rao End to target the footholes outside Cook’s off stump, with Ashwin handed the duties from the Vizzy End where Broad’s cutters had found their purchase. The heightened threat to both batsmen’s outside edges prompted a more proactive response, with Cook lining up a series of cuts and a well-placed drive through the covers for four to combat Jadeja, before Hameed responded to an Ashwin drifter that beat the bat by walloping his next ball hard and flat through mid-off for his first boundary in 80 deliveries from the spinners. On 45, Cook survived a reviewed lbw against Jadeja that was adjudged to be turning down the leg-side, although had umpire Rod Tucker raised his finger, it would have stayed up. One over later, he was living dangerously again, when Ashwin implored Kohli to take a second look at another lbw that he was convinced had squeezed pad before bat. Ashwin was right, but the impact was adjudged to be umpire’s call. India, somewhat disbelievingly, had burned through both of their reviews in the space of five balls. But then, with England’s thoughts just beginning to drift towards stumps, came the brace of body blows that undermined so much of their good work. All is not yet lost, with Root in a mood to atone for his wasteful first-innings dismissal, and Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow already attuned to the challenge of batting long on this surface. But as Hameed’s demise showed, accidents can and will happen in the fourth innings. India will believe victory is only a matter of time.

Man Utd Agree Terms With £70m Premier League Star

Manchester United have been in hot pursuit of Mason Mount over the last few weeks and now a new update has emerged on their pursuit of the player this summer.

What's the latest on Man United's move for Mason Mount?

According to The Times, the Chelsea midfielder has agreed personal terms to become a Man United player this summer.

As per the report, it is claimed that the Red Devils are closing in on making Mount their first signing of the summer with Erik ten Hag keen to add more creativity into his midfield set up this summer and Chelsea are keen to cash in to ensure they don't lose a huge asset on a free next summer.

Would Mason Mount be a good fit for Man United?

Whilst the most pressing concern for Erik ten Hag will be the centre-forward role this summer, an opportunity to strengthen the quality and attacking perspectives in the centre of the pitch is a chance they cannot afford to pass up on.

Although Man United boast a number of highly-respected talent in midfield it is definitely an area of the squad that is starting to age with Christian Eriksen, Casemiro and Fred all in their 30s at this point and other than Bruno Fernandes, are three of the most experienced first teamers.

mason-mount-chelsea-premier-league-man-united-transfers

As a result, the signing of Mount presents an opportunity for the Dutch coach to continue his rebuild at Old Trafford by injecting not only some youth into the midfield personnel but also maintaining a high level of quality and a winning mentality to match those decorated players who surround him.

The 24-year-old Champions League winner – who has been "unbelievable" in the words of Joe Cole – offers flexibility in his positioning with experience operating in a number of roles over his illustrious career so far, but could be the dream creative outlet that Ten Hag is searching for who can combine with one of his England teammates to make United an unstoppable force.

Marcus Rashford has been one of the standout performers on the red side of Manchester this season – tallying up 30 goals and 11 assists in all competitions with a goal contribution every 104 minutes, an impressive output unmatched by any player in the team as Fernandes came in second scoring less than half (14).

Now, Mount could provide the pacey winger with even more opportunities to convert chances by injecting some consistent creativity into the midfield and breaking the lines of attack to form a dangerous attacking threat.

The Chelsea academy graduate ranks in the top 15% of his positional peers in midfield across the top five European leagues for shot-creating actions, shots on goal, progressive carries, touches and progressive passes received, proving that he could be a key asset in playing that final ball into the box or even taking the goal-scoring opportunities for himself with confidence.

With that being said, it will be interesting to see how Ten Hag will deploy Mount if he joins the Red Devils this summer and whether he can reach the high expectations that will come with his reported £70m price tag next season.

Tottenham: £26m-rated "Workaholic" Is On Postecoglou’s Transfer Shortlist

Tottenham Hotspur are one of two teams interested in a move for Lyon star Maxence Caqueret this summer…

Tottenham transfer news – Maxence Caqueret

That's according to French outlet Foot Mercato, who claim that the Premier League outfit have put the 23-year-old midfielder on a shortlist, as have Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund.

It's thought that Spurs have other pressing priorities to deal with first but the young Frenchman is a player that Ange Postecoglou and his staff could look to sign before the end of the transfer window.

However, Caqueret renewed his contract through to 2027 last year, so he won't come cheap, with CIES Football Observatory currently valuing him in the region of €30m (£26m), nor will the Ligue 1 outfit be forced into a sale this summer, especially with a handful of other young talents catching the eye, such as Rayan Cherki and Castello Lukeba.

Who is Maxence Caqueret?

Following the departure of Lucas Paqueta to West Ham United, the France U21 international stepped up to the plate and delivered four goals and seven assists from a deep midfield position, a feat that saw him rank second to only Alexandre Lacazette for average match rating (7.04) in Ligue 1 last season, via WhoScored.

As a box-to-box animal, Caqueret also sat second in the Lyon squad for both tackles (2.4) and key passes (1.7) per game, which merely highlights how much of a lethal threat he is in the engine room as a machine capable of influencing a match at either end of the pitch.

It's perhaps little surprise to have seen talent scout Antonio Mango hail the 5 foot 9 "workaholic" as an "absolute delight to watch" earlier this year.

He isn't the only one to have waxed lyrical about Caqueret's undoubted ability and potential either, The Athletic contributor Alex Barker – also known as the 'Euro Expert' – suggested he was an "all-rounded midfielder", whilst BBC sports writer and Arsenal podcaster Oli Price-Bates claimed in 2021 that he had "huge potential".

There is no denying that the Venissieux-born sensation would really elevate Postecoglou's engine room at Hotspur Way, especially as one of the two no.8s – perhaps alongside Yves Bissouma – and whilst he may not be a pressing need right now, Spurs would be foolish to not swoop for him before deadline day.

With Caqueret clearly on the Aussie's shortlist, the Tottenham hierarchy must look to win the race for his signature or risk losing out on another top talent.

Chanderpaul ton arrests Guyana's winless streak

A round-up of the Regional 4 Day Tournament matches that were played between December 16-19

Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s 143 was his 73rd first-class century•WICB

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the game’s only centurion, set up Guyana’s 10-wicket win over Trinidad & Tobago in Providence. His 143, coupled with left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul’s match haul of nine wickets arrested Guyana’s three-match winless streak, taking them close to the top spot.T&T managed only 162 in the first innings after winning the toss – courtesy Permaul’s 4 for 30 and Raymon Reifer’s 3 for 34 – before Chanderpaul struck his second century in as many games. He came in when Guyana were 94 for 3 and added 141 runs for the fourth wicket with captain Leon Johnson, whose 69 was the second-highest score of the match. Chanderpaul followed that up with an 89-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Reifer (38) as Guyana posted 378. Imran Khan’s legbreak fetched him four wickets.Trailing by 216, T&T’s batsmen showed little resistance in their second innings against Permaul after a brief second-wicket stand of 93 between opener Kyle Hope (40) and Isaiah Rajah (63). Permaul troubled the lower order and T&T soon slipped from 208 for 5 to 235 all out, to set Guyana a target of only 20 runs.Openers Shimron Hetmyer (17*) and Rajendra Chandrika (4*) took just 16 balls to complete the win. The 42-year old Chanderpaul was named the Player of the Match.Only 74.4 overs were bowled in Dominica as persistent rain breaks meant the fixture between third-placed Barbados and fourth-placed Windward Islands ended in a draw.Barbados captain Kevin Stoute was the match’s only half-centurion after they were asked to bat. He scored an unbeaten 50 after they were reduced to 118 for 6. His knock came on the fourth day after only 82.4 overs were bowled in the game’s first three days. Barbados declared on 200 for 8 while Windward Islands’ Mervin Matthew took four wickets.Windward Islands batted for 11 overs, which saw openers Devon Smith (14*) and Tyrone Theophile (27*) remain unbeaten, scoring 42 together before play ended.

Christian's five-for underpins Hurricanes' win

Daniel Christian’s returned figures of 5 for 14 – the BBL’s second-best ever – to dent the Strikers

The Report by Will Macpherson02-Jan-2017

As the BBL group stage approaches its halfway point, both Hobart Hurricanes and Adelaide Strikers arrived at Bellerive Oval with a win and two defeats under their belts; it shaped as a vital clash for both. And, thanks to a supreme bowling performance – led by an unlikely spearhead, Daniel Christian – it was Hobart Hurricanes who prevailed. Chasing an underpar 144, D’Arcy Short and Tim Paine put on 105, the highest opening stand of the competition so far, and the Hurricanes got home with eight wickets and 14 balls to spare.Earlier, Christian had taken 5 for 14 – which included three wickets in the final over of the innings – and recorded the second-best figures in the BBL’s history, eclipsing the 5 for 16 taken by Sean Abbott two nights ago.In that game, the Strikers did brilliantly to defend a low score against the Sixers having been invited to bat first, but they were unable to provide a repeat dose; as a result, their finals hopes hang by a thread. The two teams meet again at Adelaide Oval on Friday – another vital clash but, this time, the Hurricanes’ position looks rather stronger.Hurricanes believe in Christian
With Shaun Tait injured and Hamish Kingston dropped, Hurricanes’ bowling attack had a rather different look. There were three seam options – the excellent Stuart Broad, Simon Milenko, making his first appearance of the season, and Christian, who was yet to bowl in the competition. Regular spinners Clive Rose and Cameron Boyce were joined by debutant Beau Webster. Tim Paine opted to bowl first, but on a flat pitch and with one square boundary of around 54m, the Hurricanes were up against it.Broad set the tone brilliantly – and returned for three more fine overs, all in separate spells – but Christian immediately tied Strikers down. His two Powerplay overs cost three, then two, with the second picking up the wicket of Jono Dean. He returned in the 13th to dismiss Travis Head – courtesy a fine catch from Broad at long-on – then was entrusted with the final over. Two had fallen in the penultimate over, bowled by Broad, and Christian dismissed key man Brad Hodge, then Ben Laughlin next ball, and Liam O’Connor to end the innings. The story of Christian’s success – which included 16 dots in 24 balls – were the variations in pace and length, trying slow bouncers to swift yorkers and much in between.Of Hurricanes’ bowlers only Milenko disappointed, conceding 50, but he picked up the vital wickets of openers Ben Dunk – whose fine form continued with a quick 31 – and Jake Weatherald.Brad Hodge’s 55 was not enough for Strikers as Daniel Christian ran through the batsmen at the other end•Getty Images

Hodge’s lone hand
The Strikers’ bowlers could not bail their batsmen out this time. The swift loss of the top three threw away a fine start and it was left to Travis Head and Brad Hodge to rebuild. Head, who had been dropped on five, was out immediately after a big straight six, but Hodge batted through until the final over, smiting cleanly over the leg side. With Keiron Pollard struggling again and a long tail, five wickets fell in the final two overs, and 143 never looked enough.Strikers’ Paine is not Short
D’Arcy Short looks quite a find for Hurricanes. He enjoyed a dream debut in the win over Sixers, before a couple of quiet games. He was in outrageous form here, standing tall, swinging hard and watching the ball fly, putting on 105 with the team captain Paine. Short took Michael Neser’s first over (the 11th) for three huge sixes – the third of which went out of the ground to bring up the 100 – and 15 from Chris Jordan’s third.Paine was happy to play the role of amused onlooker, plodding along in Short’s slipstream and targeting the spin of Head and O’Connor. Eventually Billy Stanlake – who was outstanding again (bowling 16 dots), and the only bowler to trouble Short – had him caught behind by Dunk, the man he replaced at Hurricanes, and Paine was bowled by Head, but not before he passed Chris Lynn as the season’s leading scorer. Fortunately for them, George Bailey and Kumar Sangakkara picked up the baton to see Hurricanes over the line – with the Sri Lankan finding some form in the process.

Man United Could Find Bruno 2.0 In Swoop For £80m Ace

The summer transfer window officially opened for business earlier this month and Manchester United could be busy in an attempt to bolster their squad in the coming months.

Erik ten Hag's side finished third in the Premier League last season but could look to improve their attacking options after they scored 58 times, which was the eighth-highest in the division.

One player who could come in to solve some of their problems in the final third is reported transfer target Goncalo Ramos, who is valued at around £80m by Benfica.

It is difficult to gauge how a player will adapt to moving to England when signing someone who has no prior experience of performing in the Premier League, but United got it spot on when they snatched Bruno Fernandes away from Portuguese football in 2020.

The former Sporting CP midfielder has been a terrific signing for the Red Devils and was able to hit the ground running after the move from his home country.

He won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award in both of his first two campaigns with the club and has racked up 64 goals and 54 assists in 185 matches in all competitions to date.

How did Goncalo Ramos perform last season?

United could now repeat the blinder they played with the signing of Fernandes by swooping to sign another star from Portugal in the form of Ramos, who enjoyed a terrific year in front of goal for Benfica.

The 22-year-old centre-forward averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.15 across 30 Liga Portugal outings and contributed 19 goals and two assists, which shows that the exciting ace was able to provide quality end product on a regular basis.

Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig once hailed the Portugal international as "incredibly prolific" and described him as being "on fire" throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

The talented Benfica star's return of 27 goals and 12 assists in 47 outings last season, coupled with three goals in four World Cup appearances, backs up that claim from Kulig, as the lethal finisher has proven himself in front of goal domestically and at international level.

Ramos, who scored 27 goals in 55 youth team outings for his current club, also plundered 14 goals in 18 Portugal U21 matches before his step up to the senior squad.

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford (17) was the only United player who managed more than eight Premier League goals last term, and this suggests that Ten Hag is in desperate need of another reliable goalscorer, which is exactly what Ramos would be if he can follow in Fernandes' footsteps and adapt to English football next season.

Chelsea Defender Asks to Leave Club This Summer

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has asked to leave the club this summer following a successful 11 years at Stamford Bridge.

Why does Azpilicueta want to leave?

508 appearances after arriving at Stamford Bridge from Marseille in 2012, Azpilicueta is ready to call time on his Chelsea career. The club captain has been a loyal servant to the Blues, but looks likely to be joining a host of other famous faces leaving the club this summer.

This is according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, who claims that Azpilicueta has told Chelsea personally of his desire to try something different.

The Italian said: "One more outgoing, I'm told that Cesar Azpilicueta has been very honest with Chelsea, he wants to try a new experience."

"It's true that Inter have an interest in Cesar Azpilicueta and are approaching Azpilicueta because they want to give him a chance in Italy, and Azpilicueta wants to try a new opportunity from what I understand."

"He loves Chelsea, he's super respectful with Chelsea. Chelsea have always been super respectful with Azpilicueta. One year ago, they tried their best to keep Azpilicueta and avoid his transfer to Barcelona. But now for Azpi, despite being out of contract in summer 2024, the priority is to go".

Romano adds that Inter Milan's links with Azpilicueta are "concrete" which is unsurprising given the Italian club's willingness to take experienced Premier League players on board. The fact that the 33-year-old is comfortable playing in a back five, a system Simone Inzaghi employs at San Siro, makes the transfer even more worthwhile for the Champions League finalists.

Given the prominence of Reece James at right-back, and the arrival of Malo Gusto from Lyon, Azpilicueta likely feels a move is necessary to maintain regular minutes, while also understandably fancying a change of scenery after over a decade in London.

There will be absolutely no bad blood between the Spaniard and the Blues, who have enjoyed a tremendous partnership. Azpilicueta won nine trophies during his time at Stamford Bridge, including the Champions League and two Premier League titles.

Who else is leaving Chelsea?

The short answer is almost everybody, with a plethora of top talents on the verge of leaving Stamford Bridge.

A number are making the move to Saudi Arabia this summer, with N'Golo Kante the only official departure so far as he joins up with Karim Benzema at Al-Ittihad. Teammates Kalidou Koulibaly, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Edouard Mendy, Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson-Odoi have all been linked with the Saudi Pro League.

Mateo Kovacic and Kai Havertz are on the verge of joining Manchester City and Arsenal respectively, while Mason Mount is attempting to close a deal that would take him to Manchester United.

Romelu Lukaku, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Conor Gallagher have also been touted with Stamford Bridge departures.
