West Ham prove looking up is better than looking down

You’d have to be a particularly cold-hearted fan of a rival club not to feel some sort of sympathy for the average West Ham fan at the moment.

Forget all of the aggro and the disunity for a moment and look at the simple circumstances: the Hammers are in a relegation war, in which a potentially crucial battle will be fought next weekend against a Southampton side who will be buoyed by a new manager bounce and qualification for an FA Cup semi-final.

They have been in the doldrums for a while, though. Ripped from their homes in the promise of a better future, they have been sold a pup. The stadium move, and the future of the club can be salvaged – it’s not terminal. But you get the feeling that relegation make it feel like that. So you can understand anger.

To feel like your club is upwardly mobile is all any fan can legitimately ask for. That’s why Tottenham fans would be delighted to end the season in fourth place and with an FA Cup final. Arsenal fans, on the other hand, have experienced an existential angst at that very scenario for the last few years. As a result, their current state is probably best summed up by Edvard Munch’s painting ‘The Scream’.

[ad_pod ]

For West Ham, however, upwardly mobile right now amounts to one thing and one thing only – beating Southampton next weekend.

Given what’s at stake, and given the size of both clubs who fear they could find themselves in the Championship next season, it’s fair to say that this is the biggest game of the season so far. For any team. The losers will simply be in dire straits.

Most worryingly for West Ham, Saints have a new-found good feeling about themselves – even if it is only slight. The appointment of Mark Hughes may not have been the most inspiring, but it brings a freshness and perhaps the all-important new manager bounce. An FA Cup semi-final and another trip to Wembley will also add to the vibe.

In contrast, David Moyes’ side are certainly not feeding off the same sort of energy. And the fact that it is the Hammers who have more points on the board means that they’re the ones looking over their shoulders: they are the ones with most to lose in that sense. Is it easier to chase or be chased? A bird in hand is worth two in the bush, but there does seem to be something more momentous about having the bit between your teeth and coming from behind. That way you have a target in your crosshairs.

Indeed, David Wagner summed it up with his Huddersfield side lost to Manchester United in February. Thanks to their defeat, the Terriers slipped into the relegation zone, but their manager wasn’t worried: “Even though I don’t like being in the bottom three, it is easier for us now,” he said. “We can now chase people and not look behind our shoulders.”

That might sound like sunny-eyed wishful thinking. Either an overly naive statement or else a disingenuous one, designed to put a positive spin on a disappointing situation.

That’s not quite the case, though. In a way Wagner is right; somehow there’s less pressure looking upwards rather than downwards. Over the next week, West Ham might find that out.

Revealed: 61% of Everton fans want their club to sign Wilshere

Jack Wilshere’s contract situation at Arsenal is no closer to a resolution and Everton are reportedly willing to swoop to offer him a away out of the Emirates Stadium.

That’s why we asked Everton fans whether they would like their club to sign the midfielder who had to pull out of the most recent two England friendlies.

The playmaker’s injury issues are well-documented and despite the fact he had to depart Gareth Southgate’s squad early, this season has seen him make a return to regular action for the Gunners.

His talent is still clear for everyone to see and there is every chance that Wilshere could add some creativity to Sam Allardyce’s central midfield options. Everton fans seem to agree.

61 per cent of them want their club to make a summer swoop for the Arsenal man, who could just as easily become club captain as become out of contract in July.

Everton fans fume as Schneiderlin starts against Liverpool

Everton go into today’s Merseyside derby on the back of being utterly outclassed by Manchester City in a 3-1 defeat at Goodison Park last weekend.

Sam Allardyce’s side sat back but were unable to lay a glove on the champions-elect as Pep Guardiola’s men ripped through the Toffees’ weak resistance.

The visit of a heavily-rotated Liverpool does give Everton an opportunity to right those wrongs – it’s a cliche but form does go out of the window in a derby – if they can produce a better performance.

That mission starts with Allardyce’s team selection and it would be fair to say that the Goodison fans are not impressed and the inclusion of one man in particular has attracted much ire.

That man is Morgan Schneiderlin, who is deeply unpopular among the Everton fans but has been preferred to Idrissa Gueye to protect the home backline.

Liverpool star Salah should listen to warning about Real Madrid move

Former Egypt boss Hassan Shehata has warned Liverpool star Mohamed Salah that he risks being left in Cristiano Ronaldo’s shadow if the attacker joins Real Madrid, reports the Daily Star.

What’s the word?

When Salah arrived at Anfield from Roma last summer, there were question marks due to his previous failings at Chelsea.

However, the 25-year-old has proven all critics wrong by scoring 38 goals in all competitions so far for the Merseyside outfit.

Almost like clockwork, rumours of possible interest from European giants have emerged, and now former Egypt boss Shehata has had his say.

According to the Daily Star, Shehata told Egyptian TV:

“He did great job this year with Liverpool. He can either leave for Barcelona or Real Madrid, or he can stay with Liverpool. It is up to him, but I think he should play for the team who will always let him play. Salah is the biggest star with Liverpool, but with Real Madrid he will under the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo.

“That’s what made Neymar leave Barcelona, because he wanted to be out of Lionel Messi’s shadow. Salah should think very well before he leaves Liverpool and get advice from trustworthy professional people, then he will take the best decision for himself.”

[ad_pod ]

Does he have a point?

The majority of top footballers see playing for the likes of Madrid and Barcelona the pinnacle of a career.

Salah has reached a point in his evolution that could warrant him a move to one of those clubs, but Sheheta is right in that the Egyptian could struggle to be the main man.

With Ronaldo and Lionel Messi still dominating at their respective clubs, it would be tough for Salah to steal the spotlight.

At Liverpool, the attacker is the star and he will continue to be as long as he keeps thriving alongside Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

Salah is only in his first season at Liverpool, so it would be too premature to jump ship, but if he fails to win silverware in the coming campaigns, then his head could get turned.

West Ham fans debate Mario future

Reports in Italy have claimed that West Ham United will have to pay £24m if they wish to sign Joao Mario on a permanent deal from Inter Milan at the end of the season.

The 25-year-old joined West Ham on loan from Inter in January, and has scored once and provided one assist in nine Premier League appearances for the club.

Mario has had some positive moments in a Hammers shirt, but it would be fair to say that the Portugal international has struggled to make a serious mark in English football.

Inter are said to be prepared to sell this summer, but it would mean West Ham coming up with close to £25m, which would be some investment for the London club.

The West Ham fans have been debating the potential signing, and it would be fair to say that a number are not too pleased with the numbers that have surfaced.

Mario is a very talented footballer, but West Ham surely have more pressing needs this summer when considering their struggles throughout the 2017-18 campaign.

Liverpool fans discuss Lallana’s inclusion in Roma trip

Adam Lallana has had a frustrating season at Liverpool due to injury.

The midfielder has been restricted to just one Premier League start due to a hamstring problem.

In total, Lallana – valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt – has featured in 13 games in all competitions, and is in a race to be fit for England’s World Cup campaign this summer.

Recently, the 29-year-old, who moved to Anfield from Southampton in 2014, flew to South Africa to seek treatment at a facility in Cape Town.

The midfielder’s constant injury woes has led fans to wonder about his long-term future at Liverpool, particularly as he has not been part of the scintillating side that has reached the Champions League semi-finals.

Despite not being fully fit, Lallana will travel with the squad to Italy for Wednesday’s semi-final second leg against Roma.

Liverpool head into the decider with a 5-2 advantage from the first tie at Anfield, which saw Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane get on the scoresheet.

Even though Lallana will not play a part in the showdown in Rome, his inclusion in the squad indicates that he is not far away from being eligible for competitive action.

Liverpool fans have had their say on the situation.

Lunin’s experience at such a young age demonstrates potential Liverpool should pursue

As reported by The Mirror, Liverpool are interested in signing Zorya Luhansk goalkeeper Andriy Lunin this summer.

What’s the story?

In the first half of the season the goalkeeping position at Liverpool was a real concern for supporters with neither Simon Mignolet nor Loris Karius looking convincing between the sticks at Anfield.

However, Karius’ form and consistency dramatically improved, making the search for a replacement this summer less urgent.

Nonetheless, adding depth to the position would be smart business from the club and it seems they’re on the hunt for a new third choice.

The Mirror report that the Reds want to sign Ukrainian teenager Andriy Lunin, who is already an established regular in the country’s top-flight with Zorya Luhansk.

The paper say he is highly-rated in his homeland and fancies a move to England, with Liverpool competing with Leicester and Watford for his signature.

Who is he?

Despite being 19 years of age, Lunin has already amassed impressive experience for his age, appearing regularly in the Ukrainian Premier League, featuring for his side in the UEFA Europa League and even winning a senior international cap.

For club and country he’s already made 60 career appearances since making his debut for former side Dnipro last season.

It’s experience and a consistent selection that demonstrates what a talent he is and he clearly has the kind of potential that would interest a top European side like Liverpool.

Securing his signature at an early age could be a great bit of business down the line for the Reds, who can also rely on the player to be a decent third option behind the likes of Karius and Mignolet.

West Ham fans react as Joe Hart blames David Moyes for England World Cup snub

According to reports in the Daily Mail, Joe Hart has reportedly blamed former West Ham United manager David Moyes for him missing out on a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup, and Irons fans have been quick to react.

The Daily Mail says that the goalkeeper, who has just ended a season-long loan spell with the east London outfit, isn’t happy that Moyes didn’t pick him for the final three Premier League matches of the season, in which they took seven points from a possible nine with Adrian between the sticks.

Hart lost his place in the XI on two occasions throughout the campaign following mistakes, and while the London Stadium faithful weren’t overly keen on their ex-Scottish boss, they aren’t happy with the 31-year-old stopper who proved to be unpopular as they criticised him on more than one occasion on Twitter this term.

West Ham supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on the story, and while one said it “wasn’t Moyes who made all those costly mistakes”, another said “Hart trying to blame Moyes is weak”.

Newcastle fans lavish praise on Robert

Laurent Robert could strike a football, there is absolutely no question about that.

The nine-time France international started his professional career at Montpellier back in 1994, and also represented Paris Saint-Germain before joining Newcastle United in 2001.

The midfielder turned out for the Magpies for five years – scoring 32 times in 181 appearances before leaving for Portuguese outfit Benfica in 2006.

Robert actually scored 10 times during his first season at St James’ Park, and there is no question that he is still highly regarded by the English club’s supporters.

Robert turned 43 years of age on Monday, and as expected, Newcastle’s official Twitter account was on hand to lavish praise on the left winger.

There is a general feeling that Robert did not receive the recognition he deserved when considering what he brought to St James’ Park between 2001 and 2006.

England’s right wing-back berth: Trent Alexander-Arnold vs Kieran Trippier

FootballFanCast.com’s World Cup coverage is brought to you by 5p0rtz.com – try 5p0rtz.com’s World Cup Pool Predictor for free and you could win £1million! Click here to play.

With Gareth Southgate seemingly set on fielding his England side with a three-man defence at the World Cup, deciding between his wing-back options is perhaps one of the most important decisions the Three Lions gaffer will have to make. Antonio Conte’s utilisation of Victor Moses has debunked the idea teams need a ‘specialist’ wing-back to make the system work, but it’s clear England still need the right fit for those wide roles – players with power, stamina and a dose of offensive craft about them.

Southgate already has some fantastic options to choose from, but having seemingly decided that Kyle Walker will be counted more as a centre-back than a wing-back in his World Cup squad, there’s still a question mark lingering over the right-hand side. At first glance, Kieran Trippier is the obvious candidate, but there’s a new pretender on the block in the form of Liverpool’s hugely promising teenager Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Trippier, of course, offers greater experience and a more proven track record. Although even this season he’s not been guaranteed to start every game for Tottenham, sharing his No.2 berth with Serge Aurier, he now has 77 Premier League appearances under his belt alongside five caps for England – including an appearance last time out against Italy.

In contrast, Alexander-Arnold is yet to feature for the Three Lions at senior level and has made less career outings, just 45, than Trippier has in the Premier League. That inexperience has really shown at times too; for all the undoubted progress Alexander-Arnold made last season, it shouldn’t be forgotten that he’s committed some huge mistakes in key games – allowing Marcus Rashford to ghost into the space inside him to score twice during the most recent Northwest derby being perhaps the key example.

27-year-old Trippier has enjoyed a strong season too, only beaten for assists in Tottenham’s Premier League squad by four team-mates, and also offers that on-pitch relationship with Harry Kane. One expertly-whipped ball, which remains the strongest part of Trippier’s game, into the path of England’s star striker could be all the difference at the World Cup, particularly should the Three Lions get to the knockout stages.

But if Trippier does suffer from one weakness, it’s a lack of dynamism compared to many of his Premier League contemporaries – he’s fast without being lightening quick and sturdy without being particularly powerful. Alexander-Arnold, on the other hand, offers that extra dash of youthful athleticism and for this England team, that could be vitally important, perhaps even more important than experience.

After all, this England’s side greatest asset is how the three-man defence and Southgate’s insistence on playing out of the back leaves them capable of staging counter-attacks from practically every department; as soon as the front-line is bypassed and the midfield is drawn towards the ball, it takes only a couple of cute passes in tight areas for England to launch a breakaway. That mantra would seem to suit the 19-year-old a little better than the Spurs defender, fitting perfectly into the Three Lions’ starting-XI-spanning dynamism.
