Grassroots require major investment – Sutherland

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland says that “hundreds of hundreds of millions of dollars” are required to better fund the game’s lower levels in the country

Daniel Brettig25-May-20173:46

What exactly is the Cricket Australia-ACA pay dispute?

Australia’s players need to be paid under a different model because cricket needs grassroots investment worth “hundreds of hundreds of millions of dollars” in order to maintain its health in the country, according to the Cricket Australia (CA) chief executive James Sutherland.Ahead of a visit to England for ICC meetings coinciding with the Champions Trophy, Sutherland struck a mixed tone about the present pay dispute between CA and the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA), at one point questioning whether the ACA were acting in the best interests of the players but at another insisting CA were committed to maintaining their partnership.Sutherland, the chairman David Peever and CA’s lead negotiator Kevin Roberts are currently reconsidering their initial refusal to entertain the ACA’s request for independent mediation to end the present standoff less than five weeks before the current MOU on player payment expires. The board are chasing a radically reshaped deal that breaks up the current fixed revenue percentage model. The reasons for that, Sutherland said, revolved largely around the huge amount of money required to better fund the game’s lower levels.”I’m a coach of an under-13 cricket team. I know and understand the challenges that cricket clubs face,” Sutherland told the “We’ve identified that we need A$20-30 million per year to really make a difference. On the facilities side, we’re talking about hundreds of hundreds of millions of dollars.”We don’t want to entirely abandon [revenue sharing], but we do want to modernise it in the interests of the whole game. We believe the model has served a purpose where previously the players were not well paid. They are well paid now. We’re pleased about that, but we have this responsibility to grow the game in the grassroots.”CA are in the closing stages of completing their first national audit of cricket facilities around the country, which is expected to quantify the need for major investment in cricket grounds in general and better facilities for women in particular. While CA’s pay offer states it can raise about A$76m for grass roots over the next five years, the ACA’s counter-proposal has suggested committing 22.5% of the game’s revenue to the same areas – a vastly greater sum. Also appearing on was the former federal government minister and longtime trade union leader Greg Combet, who has been working with the ACA on how to deal with CA and its board now comprised of the likes of Peever and former Wesfarmers chairman Bob Every. Combet said the players were being asked to become employees instead of partners.”It seems to be that a business philosophy is being brought to it,” Combet said. “That says the players need to be essentially treated like employees and the cricket board will make the decisions about the allocation of the money. ‘We don’t need any advice from the players, thanks’.That’s not going to work in a major Australian sport.”Sutherland rebutted this by saying CA were eager to maintain their partnership with the players, albeit with a different payment model. The presence of both Sutherland and the ACA chief executive Alistair Nicholson in London over the next week affords the chance for the pair to meet.”What I can very clearly say is that we continue to see the very important role that the players play,” Sutherland said. “We want to continue the strong partnership that we have built with the players over the course of the last 20 years.”

Tottenham: Spurs Weighing Move For "The Best" Striker

Tottenham Hotspur are "considering a move" for Flamengo star Pedro with star striker Harry Kane's future uncertain, according to journalist Miguel Delaney.

Who will Spurs sign?

New manager Ange Postecoglou has been left delighted with some of the business Spurs have conducted so far this summer, England international James Maddison in particular.

The former Leicester City playmaker has officially joined Postecoglou's side with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and winger Manor Solomon, with Tottenham's head coach expressing his excitement recently.

“Really excited to get James as part of the group," said the Australian.

"Any manager will tell you that part of the key to being a dominant team is having multiple attacking threats and having a midfielder who can score and create goals.

“They’re not easy to come by. He’s proven himself at that lvel in the last few years as somebody who can do that. When you look at Tottenham the last few years, they’ve been really reliant on the front three to get their goals.

“I thought it was a really good fit for us to look for a player like James – even better if we could get James, so we ended up getting James."

However, Tottenham aren't though to be finished just yet, as links still surround the signing of a new first team centre-back. Indeed, Wolfsburg's Micky van de Ven. Meanwhile, Edmond Tapsoba of Bayer Leverkusen, Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo, Barcelona's Clement Lenglet, Galatasary's Victor Nelsson and Bremer have all been linked with moves.

Spurs, with Kane's contract expiring in just 12 months, are also now being tipped to potentially source a replacement if their superstar doesn't pen fresh terms with the north Londoners.

There have even been suggestions that Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who will command a large transfer fee, is a player of serious interest to chairman Daniel Levy.

Now, according to Delaney of The Independent, Spurs could look across the Atlantic for options as news emerges on Flamengo's exciting star Pedro.

Flamengo's Pedro during the warm up before the match

Tottenham are apparently "considering a move" for the 26-year-old, who was called up to Brazil's squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

While he struggled at Fiorentina four years ago, there is a feeling the big move came too early and he is now ready to ply his trade in Europe's top five leagues once again.

He is one of many options they're weighing right now, as Kane leaving is now seen as much more realistic given the uncertainty surrounding his contract.

How good is Pedro?

The Rio-born forward boasts a fine scoring record for Flamengo in the Brazilian top flight, having netted an impressive 93 goals and a further 23 assists in 141 Brasiliero Serie A appearances (Transfermarkt).

Pedro has also been praised by footballing icon Ronaldo, not just as a "quality striker", but also the "best player" in America right now.

"The top scorer and Craque of the Brasileirão will be Pedro," said Ronaldo.

"Also the best player in America in 2023. Pedro is a quality striker who makes the difference in Flamengo's attack, he has a huge future ahead of him, with a future also in the national team".

Bangladesh still searching for maiden away win against New Zealand

New Zealand aim to cap off their successful tour of Ireland with a win against Bangladesh, even while their opponents eye their first win against New Zealand away from home

‘Good to get back into ODI cricket’ – Henry

Big PictureNew Zealand, on account of winning their first three games of the tri-series, have already won the tournament but will look to keep their perfect record in Ireland intact as they play their last game against Bangladesh. In the context of the tournament, the game is a dead rubber, but both teams will look to finish strongly before they move to England for the Champions Trophy.New Zealand have some of their IPL stars back, having already made their presence felt in the last game against Ireland where Corey Anderson, Matt Henry and Adam Milne all took part in dismantling Ireland by 190 runs. Tom Latham, Luke Ronchi, Ross Taylor and Colin Munro are also in form, having made runs during this tri-series.Jeetan Patel’s addition to their squad means that looking ahead to the Champions Trophy from this point, New Zealand will have an additional spin option. Patel has taken 10 wickets at an average of 35.30 for Warwickshire in the Royal London One-Day Cup.Bangladesh will want to get one back at New Zealand, having lost to them in all four ODIs they’ve played since December last year. The two sides also meet in the final group match in the Champions Trophy, and a win would certainly boost their morale.Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar have shown good form but Sabbir Rahman, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan are yet to play a significant innings in Ireland. Mahmudullah and Mosaddek Hossain would also have to find a way to get more runs in the slog overs.Bangladesh’s bowling too must prove, especially going into the Champions Trophy, that it doesn’t entirely rely on Mustafizur Rahman for the wickets and Shakib Al Hasan for control. Mashrafe Mortaza, Rubel Hossain, Sunzamul Islam and Mehedi Hasan all have to find a way to deal with a higher-ranked opposition in these conditions.Soumya Sarkar has struck 61 and 87 not out in the tournament, scoring his first fifty in nearly two years•Sportsfile via Getty Images

Form guideNew Zealand WWWLW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Bangladesh WLLWLIn the spotlightColin Munro blazed 44 off 15 balls against Ireland in their last game, finding his groove with his slogs and switch-hits quite quickly. New Zealand didn’t pick him for the Champions Trophy, which means Munro has another chance to make his exclusion look silly. After being without an ODI fifty for nearly two years, Soumya Sarkar now has scores of 61 and 87 not out in the tri-series. It bodes well for the left-hand opener who has been an iffy selection in ODIs since last year. Another big score would get him best prepared for the Champions Trophy.Team newsNew Zealand included Matt Henry, Adam Milne and Corey Anderson in the XI in their last game, and they are unlikely to make any changes after their 190-run win against Ireland.New Zealand: (probable) 1 Luke Ronchi (wk), 2 Tom Latham (capt), 3 Neil Broom, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Corey Anderson, 6 Mitchell Santner, 7 Colin Munro, 8 Adam Milne, 9 Scott Kuggeleijn, 10 Ish Sodhi, 11 Matt HenryTaskin Ahmed, Shafiul Islam and Subashis Roy are options available as replacements for Mustafizur Rahman and Rubel Hossain. Imrul Kayes and Nasir Hossain, too, are up for selection if the team management wants to give their batsmen a break.Bangladesh: (probable) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Sabbir Rahman, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Shakib Al Hasan, 7 Mosaddek Hossain, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 9 Sunzamul Islam, 10 Rubel Hossain, 11 Mustafizur RahmanPitch and conditionsIt promises to be a clear day in Dublin with no rain. The side batting first has averaged around 227 in the last five ODIs at the venue, though Bangladesh’s 257 for 9 wasn’t safe in the last game here, also against New Zealand. So bowling first may be the better choice for the side that wins the toss.Stats and trivia In 16 attempts, Bangladesh have never defeated New Zealand in an ODI outside homeIn New Zealand-Bangladesh ODIs, Ross Taylor has the most runs (663) and most centuries (2) Shakib Al Hasan has a chance to lead the wicket-takers’ list in New Zealand-Bangladesh ODIs, as he is now tied with Kyle Mills on 33 wickets. The next highest among active players is Rubel Hossain’s 19 wicketsQuotes”Hopefully we can finish off strong. They boys have had a lot of success. It is the last game, so hopefully we can sign off with another good win.”

Liverpool Transfer News: Cheick Doucoure Update

Crystal Palace will demand a minimum of £70m for Liverpool transfer target Cheick Doucoure this summer, according to an update from journalist Alex Howell.

Are Liverpool signing Cheick Doucoure?

The Reds are in the middle of a crazy summer transfer window when it comes to their midfield situation, with various incomings and outgoings leading to a massive change in that area of the pitch.

Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have come in from Brighton and RB Leipzig respectively, but James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have all left after their contracts expired. Meanwhile, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson are also on the verge of sealing moves to Saudi Arabia – something that few saw coming earlier in the summer.

With the latter pairing such a key part of Liverpool's midfield for so many years, it is imperative that more arrivals join Mac Allister and Szoboszlai through the Anfield entrance door, and Doucoure has emerged as a possible target, having been linked with a move to the Reds in recent days.

The 23-year-old was an important player for Palace last season, starting 34 matches in the Premier League, and it seems clear that the Eagles are extremely hesitant to let the midfielder go this summer.

What's the latest Liverpool transfer news?

Taking to Twitter, BBC reporter Howell provided an update on the latest situation surrounding Liverpool's pursuit of Doucoure, claiming that Palace are demanding big money for his services:

"Crystal Palace would only entertain selling Cheick Doucoure for a minimum fee of £70m. Liverpool are interested in the midfielder and the club feel the valuation of £70-80m is fair for the player in the current market."

This is certainly not an ideal update from a Liverpool perspective, considering £70m is a huge amount of money to pay for a young player who has only proven himself for one season in the Premier League.

While money should be available to spend on new signings, especially given the funds eventually generated for Fabinho and Henderson's exits, it is important that the Reds are not reckless in securing replacements.

Doucoure could certainly be a superb long-term replacement for Fabinho if Liverpool do snap him up, however, with the Malian possessing similar attributes in the No.6 role, averaging 2.3 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per game in the league for Palace in 2022/23.

Palace manager Roy Hodgson highlighted the importance of the Eagles midfielder back in May, saying:

"He has been very influential. He’s one of those players that plays in a position which is a bit of a fulcrum of the attacking midfield play and defending midfield play.

“His positional sense, his ability to read the game, his technical ability, and the fact that he gets around the field so well [makes him influential]. I noticed he’s up there amongst people who’ve made the most interceptions, which is nice to see."

This shows how many positive attributes Doucoure could add to Liverpool's side, at a time when more energy and quality is required, following so many issues there last season. If a reasonable fee can be agreed, it feels like a no-brainer of a signing, but not at £70m.

CA offers concessions, sends contract offers

Australia’s players have been offered key concessions in their pay dispute with Cricket Australia, as the Australian Cricketers Association renewed its call for independent mediation to find a way forward only a week before the expiry of the current MOU

Daniel Brettig23-Jun-20172:49

Brettig: CA’s contract offers bit of a blank sheet of paper

Australia’s players have been offered key concessions in their pay dispute with Cricket Australia, but the Australian Cricketers Association has been enraged by the board’s decision to simultaneously send out contract offers to players.A week before the expiry of the current MoU, and following the most recent meeting between the two parties on Wednesday, CA’s lead negotiator Kevin Roberts wrote to the ACA chief executive Alistair Nicholson stating that the board is willing to allow all players to share in profits above projections and also to significantly increase payment for domestic male players in recognition of their contribution. These two issues have been central to the dispute, after CA’s initial offer afforded “blue sky” payments above fixed wages to only the top male and female players, while at the same time placing a virtual freeze on payment levels for domestic male players at a time when the next Big Bash League broadcast rights deal is expected to offer a rich windfall to the game. However, the letter was accompanied by contract offers sent to all players despite talks between the two parties being a long way from resolved. The contracts do not specify their terms and conditions, moving the ACA to advise players not to sign.”The ACA notes that CA has made a revised MoU offer and sent it to the players. They have also issued ‘contract offers’ directly to individual players for their signature; bypassing the ACA,” the association said in a statement. “The ACA has advised players not to sign. The letter provided to players today from CA does not accurately reflect how far apart the parties remain with a week to go. The parties have not reached agreement on many fundamental issues.”The contract offers do not contain Revenue Sharing for all players, and are not what they appear to be. They do not include crucial information regarding terms and conditions. Further, as has been requested since August 2016, critical financial and forecasting information has yet to be provided so the ACA can properly assess the offers and advise the players accordingly. This remains unacceptable.”In the letter, seen by ESPNcricinfo, Roberts said that following his national “roadshow” to speak to state squads, CA is now prepared to “increase the international cricket surpluses that are shared with players, include all domestic players in the sharing arrangements, and increase annual pay rises to male state players with commensurate increases for WNCL and WBBL players to maintain gender pay equity”. The letter does not feature any financial details, as figures are believed to be open for discussion. At the same time, Roberts also indicated that players will now be offered contracts, with the provision to change their terms pending the outcome of further talks between CA and the ACA. “These contracts are conditional upon a new MoU being agreed,” Roberts wrote. “If further increases in pay are agreed for male state players, along with WNCL and WBBL players due to the increases contemplated above, the offers in the contracts would be varied accordingly.”The contracts would not require any variation for the inclusion of domestic players in the sharing of any international cricket surpluses above the level required to fund player payments. We trust that the ACA will respond positively to this new offer that CA is proposing in order to achieve a positive outcome for the players and the game.”While the concessions appear significant, there is no indication that CA is willing to budge on no longer offering the players a fixed percentage of agreed revenue over the next five years, the cornerstone of MoUs between the board and the ACA over the past 20 years. Equally, CA appears to remain intent upon rolling a portion of the “adjustment ledger” money from the current MoU into the next one, a move the players have rejected on the basis that it is money they have already earned. There was an adjustment ledger rollover in the previous 2012 MoU, but this was only due to the fact that the previous deal – a one-year agreement signed for 2011-12 – included far more money than would have been available in other years due to the fact that a lucrative India tour took place that summer. Without any carryover of money from that deal, the players’ wages would have spiked dramatically for one season then dropped off significantly in subsequent seasons.Domestic player payments would increase under Cricket Australia’s latest proposal•Getty Images

The ACA president Greg Dyer stated on Friday that “emergency mediation” was required between Nicholson and his CA counterpart James Sutherland to end the dispute and prevent a host of chaotic scenarios unfolding post-June 30, including around half of all players falling out of contract.”The current talks between the Australian Cricketers’ Association and Cricket Australia have failed to achieve a break through,” Dyer said. “With only seven days until the June 30 deadline, the ACA calls for emergency mediation to be conducted at CEO level. With this the ACA continues to search for ways to resolve the dispute. We are motivated by a sense of duty to the game and its players and frustration at the current process.”The ACA are instructed in this call by Australia’s male and female cricketers, who are determined to ensure every avenue is explored to avoid the post-June 30 cliff. We are hopeful that the common sense offers of flexibility made in negotiations will be treated more respectfully in an elevated and mediated environment.”As things stand, from June 30 most of Australia’s elite male and female cricket players will be unemployed, jeopardising upcoming tours and ultimately the summer of cricket. This creates uncertainty for broadcasters, sponsors, players and administrators. And potentially stains the game, in the eyes of fans, and Australia’s reputation in the international community.”Dyer said that, among other things, CA is yet to provide the ACA’s negotiating team with adequate financial forecasts about the state of the game over the next five years. CA has repeatedly claimed that the level of detail the ACA is seeking is not able to be provided due to a raft of commercial and broadcast deals needing to be negotiated over the next 12 months.”The ACA is yet to receive the necessary financial information and forecasts to inform Australia’s male and female professional cricketers,” Dyer said. “We have been calling for this since August 2016. To date, CA has only been willing to provide financial ‘scenarios’ and ‘formulas’, which lack the detail and scope required.”The players believe in the principle of sharing in the revenue they generate. The players asked CA for financial and forecasting information in August 2016. This has not been provided by CA, even though it has been provided in the past MOU negotiations. The players have offered two detailed submissions, spent seven months at the formal negotiating table and in May 2017 first called for mediation.”A CA spokesman said that more detailed financial information had been provided to the ACA during the most recent set of meetings: “Full financial information was provided to the ACA in confidence earlier this week, and the ACA currently has all figures and scenarios that Cricket Australia is working with. This information is sufficient for players and their union to assess CA’s pay offer. As CA has explained many times to the ACA, 80% of cricket’s revenue is uncontracted for the next five years, and confidential scenarios are the appropriate and financially responsible way to approach the issue.”

Everton Remain Interested In Signing 21-Year-Old Forward

Everton are still in the hunt to sign Almeria forward El Bilal Toure in the summer transfer window, according to an update from renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Do Everton want to sign El Bilal Toure?

The Blues are in desperate need of a positive summer when it comes to incoming business, in order to avoid yet another Premier League relegation battle next season. They stayed up on the final day last time around, following a 1-0 victory at home to Bournemouth, and while there was obvious happiness and relief from supporters, it is a situation that cannot afford to keep happening.

Everton struggled in various areas of the pitch in 2022/23, but they were arguably at their most disappointing in attack, with a lack of quality and firepower on show far too often, scoring only 34 times. The need to bring in at least one new forward this summer is plain to see, and one player they have been linked with signing is Toure.

The 21-year-old scored seven goals in just 15 La Liga starts for Almeria last season, also chipping in with two assists, and he looks like a young player with plenty of potential. His current contract runs out in the summer of 2028, however, so his current club are in no rush to sell him at all, and can instead demand a healthy amount of money for his services.

While Everton are yet to seal the signing of Toure, hailed as a "major talent" last summer by 90min's Graeme Bailey, in the current transfer window, it is a rumour that is refusing to go away, as things stand.

What's the latest on El Bilal Toure to Everton?

Taking to Twitter, Romano gave an update on the current situation surrounding Toure, saying Atalanta are eyeing a move for him but that Everton are also still in the mix:

"Atalanta are pushing to sign El Bilal Toure from Almeria, revealed as top target one month ago. Negotiations are ongoing but Everton interest remains.

"Atalanta want Toure as priority but new striker has to join ASAP in any case because Man Utd will bid for Hojlund soon."

It clearly isn't going to be easy for Everton to sign Toure this summer, with Atalanta an attractive proposition who are superior to the Blues currently, but there is always the lure of the Premier League that can be great for any player, given its reputation as the best and most competitive division in world football.

The 15-cap and five-goal Mali international is someone who could be such an exciting addition to Sean Dyche's squad next season and beyond, given his age, and he could help solve the goal-shy issue that held Everton back too often last season, and arguably has done for a lengthy period of time now.

Admittedly, it would be unfair to expect fireworks from Toure every week, considering he is still an emerging talent who is honing his skills, but his young energy and eye for goal are both things that could help take the Blues up a much-needed gear moving forward, as they look for a far better campaign this time around, pulling away from the relegation zone in the process.
