India run through top order after amassing 600

India’s lower order propelled them to 600 before their bowlers left Sri Lanka five down and 247 short of the follow-on mark at stumps on day two

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy27-Jul-20171:38

Maharoof: Disappointed by Gunathilaka and Mendis dismissals

Swing, seam, pace and bounce. Dip, drift, turn and bounce. Ingredients that seemed largely absent when India piled on 600, their second-highest total in Sri Lanka, haunted the home side in their reply, as they ended the second day of the Galle Test five down with the follow-on mark still 247 runs away.Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami took the top order apart, even as Upul Tharanga hurtled along with a profusion of silken off-side boundaries. Then came R Ashwin, going around the wicket to left and right-handers alike, harnessing the sea breeze and testing both edges with drift, swinging arm balls, and the occasional instance of sharp turn. Over the course of an unbroken spell of 18 overs, he gradually discovered the ideal pace and angle of seam to extract the maximum possible help from the Galle pitch, and could have easily ended the day with more than one wicket.Umesh gave India their first breakthrough, in the second over of Sri Lanka’s innings. Swing did Dimuth Karunaratne in, a full ball curling back into the left-hander from over the wicket and forcing him to play around his front pad. He missed and reviewed Bruce Oxenford’s lbw decision, a wasted referral given there was no inside edge, and that the ball had pitched on middle stump and had straightened down that line.R Ashwin got drift and dip to be a constant threat•AFP

For a time, Danushka Gunathilaka, making his Test debut, matched Tharanga shot for shot, as the two left-handers drove repeatedly on the up during a second-wicket partnership of 61 at just under five an over. But he played one shot too many, feet rooted to the crease as he flashed at, and edged, a Shami delivery angled across him.Kusal Mendis, in at No. 4, had the misfortune of getting a Shami special when he was still to get off the mark. It hit the seam in the corridor, seamed away slightly with some extra bounce, and all he could do was nick it. Two times in five balls, Shikhar Dhawan was the catcher at first slip. The next two wickets fell during Ashwin’s long and endlessly tormenting spell. The first began with his drift and dip beating Tharanga in the air. Having jumped out of his crease and inside-edged into his pad, he turned and hurried back as the ball rolled towards Abhinav Mukund at silly point. Abhinav flicked the ball to the keeper, and when the bails came off, Tharanga’s bat, after a momentary grounding on the dive, had bounced up. A cruel end to an innings of 64 and a 57-run fourth-wicket stand with Mathews. Then came the wicket of another left-hander, Niroshan Dickwella, who pressed forward but found himself nowhere near the pitch of the ball, thanks to Ashwin’s dip. Extra bounce grabbed the shoulder of his jabbing defensive bat, and Mukund, diving right at silly point, took a superb, low one-hander.Mathews struggled initially against Ashwin, and on 32 survived an lbw decision reviewed by India when ball-tracking returned an umpire’s call verdict. He slowly grew in assurance, and ended the day batting on 54 with Dilruwan Perera for company. With Asela Gunaratne, who fractured his left thumb on the first day, unlikely to bat, Sri Lanka have quite a task ahead of them.An improved bowling display from Sri Lanka, led by Nuwan Pradeep, who finished with 6 for 132, threatened at various points to limit India’s total. But the lower order, led by Ashwin and the debutant Hardik Pandya, kept counter-punching.India lost both their overnight batsmen, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, inside 12 overs of the morning, both out to seam. Away-seam and extra bounce from Nuwan Pradeep found Pujara’s edge on 153, while Rahane, driving away from his body at a rare full ball from Lahiru Kumara, edged to slip.Despite the selection of Pandya, India stuck with Ashwin and Wriddhiman Saha at Nos. 6 and 7, trusting their experience and proven firefighting abilities ahead of the debutant’s promise. Ashwin and Saha had put on three fifty partnerships and one double-century stand, and averaged 47.50 as a pair since the start of 2016. They combined once again to stall Sri Lanka’s momentum, adding 59 for the sixth wicket. Not for the first time in his career, Ashwin began finding the gaps almost as soon as he walked in, and took three fours from successive Herath overs, twice driving him through the off side and once stepping out to clip him between midwicket and mid-on. In all, he would hit seven fours in a 60-ball 47.Both fell in the space of six balls, with lunch imminent, and when Pradeep took his sixth wicket after the break, cleaning up Ravindra Jadeja with the bouncer-yorker double, Sri Lanka may have hoped for a quick end to the innings. As it turned out, India’s last two wickets added 83 in 71 balls in a burst of six-hitting. The quicks leaked runs in an effort to pepper the lower order with the short ball, and Herath kept get hitting back over his head, notably by Mohammed Shami who hit him for three sixes. Pandya hit three sixes too, all off Pradeep, two hooked over backward square leg and one whipped over midwicket. The dismissal of Shami, caught on the square-leg boundary off Kumara, ended a ninth-wicket stand of 62, but Sri Lanka’s ordeal wasn’t yet over. Umesh Yadav, India’s No. 11, also joined in the hitting spree, taking Kumara for a big six down the ground and Herath for the lofted four that brought up India’s 600.Pandya, who had brought up his half-century, off 48 balls, in the same Herath over, fell soon after, finding deep square leg while going after another short ball from Kumara.

Everton Could Sign £14m Calvert-Lewin Successor

Everton have been strongly linked with a move for Brian Brobbey this summer, and now a new update has emerged on the club's pursuit of the player.

How much is Brian Brobbey worth?

According to BBC Sport, Everton remain keen on signing the Ajax striker this summer.

As per the report, Sean Dyche still desperately needs attacking reinforcements after a poor Premier League season and it is claimed that deals are still being pursued to sign both Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto and Brobbey this summer.

The player is currently valued at £14m, as per Football Transfers.

Who is Brian Brobbey?

It is clear that strengthening the attacking third is a huge priority for the Everton hierarchy ahead of the return to action in the Premier League next month, and it may now become an even bigger urgency after reports this week revealed that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is attracting interest.

It was claimed in the Italian media that AS Roma are keen to replace Tammy Abraham with the Toffees talisman, however, the Daily Mail revealed that Everton have no intentions of letting their striker go this summer.

Indeed, the departures of Anthony Gordon and Richarlison have left Dyche will few quality and experienced options to unleash in his forward line, but there is no denying that Calvert-Lewin has become an unreliable and inconsistent feature at Goodison Park.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Over the last two seasons, the £100k-per-week forward has spent 203 days in recovery for various injury issues and has only managed to play 36 games in all competitions – scoring just seven goals and delivering three assists during that period – which led to concerns from former player Stan Collymore last season:

"These are worrying times for Dominic Calvert-Lewin There’s no denying it – Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injuries are becoming a major problem."

"Everton and Sean Dyche can’t afford to wait on their main striker to be fit. The position they’re in now means they need someone to be fit, available and performing consistently."

As a result, the signing of Brobbey could present Everton with a golden opportunity to part ways with the injury-prone Englishman, bolster transfer funds and provide Dyche with a trustworthy centre-forward who can contribute consistently.

Over 32 league appearances last season, the 21-year-old – hailed a "great talent" by compatriot and Netherlands teammate Virgil van Dijk – scored 13 goals, registered three assists and created four big chances – an output no Everton player managed to match in all competitions last season, let alone in the Premier League, with top-scorer Dwight McNeil scoring seven.

Not only that, the Dutchman ranks in the top 15% of his positional peers across the leagues most similar to the Eredivisie for shots on goal, pass completion, touches and progressive passes recieved, as per FBref, proving that he is a huge and enviable presence to have in front of goal.

With that being said, it would be a no-brainer for Everton to snap up the services of Brobbey this summer, as he could be a worthy successor to Calvert-Lewin and significantly improve the threat and consistency in the final third.

Sunderland Make Transfer Offers For New Forward

Sunderland have submitted bids to sign a new forward, with manager Tony Mowbray believing the club are edging closer to bolstering their attacking ranks.

What’s the latest Sunderland transfer news?

The Black Cats have been relatively busy ahead of the new Championship season which begins this weekend. Sunderland are scheduled to take on newly-promoted Ipswich Town on Sunday at home, where a number of new faces could be in line to make their competitive debuts.

So far this summer, the club have made six new signings, with fees paid for Jenson Seelt, Nectarios Triantis, Jobe Bellingham and Eliezer Mayenda from PSV Eindhoven, Central Coast Mariners, Birmingham City and FC Sochaux respectively.

Luis Semedo and Bradley Dack have also signed on free transfers from Benfica and Blackburn Rovers, and it looks as if further additions are being worked on behind the scenes.

Recent reports from France have claimed that the club are in talks with Paris Saint-Germain over a permanent move for full-back Colin Dagba, and a new arrival in attack could also be on the cards.

Reliable Sunderland reporter James Hunter shared a story for The Chronicle on Thursday, providing an exciting transfer update. He relayed comments from Mowbray who was at the EFL season launch event at the Stadium of Light, with the 59-year-old admitting that bids have been submitted and that the club are “hopefully close” to landing an attacking target.

"We're hopefully close. We had a little meeting yesterday. I think we have bids in for footballers. It's not out of our hands because we are pushing hard to try and make sure we make additions to that part of the pitch.

"Hemir (Semedo) wasn't really brought as a number one centre forward, he was a project to nurture and grow and give him some game time. We're not expecting him to play 46 games.

"We hoped he might play 20 and someone else plays 25 and we might play two together sometimes, but as we sit here at the moment he has to try and play 46 games. That won't be the case I'm pretty sure.

"Before the window shuts we will have some help for him at that end of the pitch."

Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray.

Who are Sunderland’s strikers?

Mowbray currently has three centre-forwards on the books, however, two of those are teenagers in new boys Mayenda and Semedo. The third option is Ross Stewart, but the 27-year-old has been struggling with injury over the past 12 months.

The Scotland international managed to score 11 goals in 15 appearances in all competitions but missed large parts of the campaign through hamstring and Achilles injuries.

He is unlikely to be fit for the new season and has even been linked with an exit, which shows how a proven and experienced forward would be beneficial to Mowbray’s squad.

It looks as if a new striker signing will be one to keep an eye on heading into Sunday’s opening league game, and the sooner one arrives, you could argue the greater the chances are of Sunderland repeating a top-six finish from last season.

Archer and Wiese stun Northants with late-order fightback

Sussex are still standing entering the final day as the Division Two promotion scrap gets serious

Sussex 172 (Kleinveldt 5-50) and 382 for 9 (Archer 74*, Robson 72, Nash 66, Wiese 61) lead Northamptonshire 426 (Duckett 193) by 128 runs
Usually, a fightback of this magnitude is saved for the silver screen. But at Wantage Road, in front of a crowd that died down at tea with a Northamptonshire win looking a foregone conclusion, Sussex threw counter-punches that Rocky Balboa would be proud of to take us to a fourth round. Somehow, they have amassed a lead that, combined with a few more lusty blows tomorrow, could leave Northants facing a difficult fourth-innings chase. The two key protagonists were Jofra Archer and David Wiese – two allrounders in a Jack of All Trades Sussex tail. The pair came together with a deficit of eight set against Northamptonshire’s first innings of 426, with just two wickets left in their follow-on innings. In the space of 15 overs, they dovetailed brilliantly to thrash 124 for the ninth-wicket, taking their side into a lead that by stumps had been boosted to 128.Archer, the more dashing of the two, hit through the line of the ball emphatically, while also finding boundaries square: two back-to-back fours off Simon Kerrigan (through midwicket and then point) took him to his half-century from 80 balls. That’s not to say Wiese was a slouch: his second fifty of the summer came up from 55-balls with a huge six, also off Kerrigan, into the roof of the Lynn Wilson Centre that sits opposite the pavilion.Without wanting to pour too much misery onto the left-arm spinner, who has bowled well in this match, it was his error that let the partnership get this far. When Archer was on 15, the scoreboard reading 249 for 8 (trailing by three), Kerrigan set himself at deep square leg under a wild hook but was unable to take a routine catch. While Wiese was eventually trapped lbw by Richard Gleeson, Archer remains unbeaten overnight having beaten his previous career-best score of 73, achieved last summer against Essex at Colchester. For Northamptonshire, the toil of almost two days in the field took its toll. What control there was to skittle Sussex out for 172 in their first innings on day two and then grind away for the next eight wickets was lost when the second new ball arrived. Rory Kleinveldt, who removed Luke Wright and Ben Brown in the space of three balls, could not persist with an off-stump line that has given him eight wickets in this match so far. Richard Gleeson, troubling batsmen throughout with his extra pace and bounce, particularly from the Wantage Road End, sprayed a few down the leg side and looked fed up by stumps. The enthusiasm in the field was long gone by the time the umpires took the players off for bad light.Northants skipper Alex Wakely talked openly of a quiet dressing room that felt they should have already been tucking into some celebratory beers rather than nursing some wounds and preparing to go again on the morrow. As Archer and Wiese showed, the pitch is still playing true and as awkward as a chase of, say, 150, might be, Northants are still favourites.Sussex were steady for the first 45 overs of the day, which only brought one wicket: Stiaan van Zyl edging through to David Murphy off the bowling of Gleeson. Angus Robson and Chris Nash were any plays-and-misses behind them to bat for the best part of 29 overs. In that time, Robson was able to move to his first half-century of the season, from 100 balls, in his third match for Sussex.Released from his contract with Leicestershire earlier this season, citing differences with the head coach Pierre de Bruyn, who left his post earlier this week, he was taken on for a season-long trial at Sussex. Prolific form in the 2nd XI, combined with a misfiring top-order saw Robson given his full-debut for the club in their win against Worcestershire at New Road. The opening position has been an issue down at Hove. With Luke Wells coming into the season with an injury, Sussex were close to signing Surrey’s Arun Harinath on loan as cover before that did not come to pass. Instead, Harry Finch and Nash took on new ball duties with limited success. While Nash has been moved back into the middle order, Finch has been dropped after averaging just 22.5 from 16 innings and Robson given the chance to do what he has done for most of his career: respect the good ones, go after the bad ones. This was his 28th first-class and one that he could and should have converted to what would have been only his third career hundred. But when he pressed forward and edged Kerrigan to first slip, after the left-arm spinner had changed to over the wicket to make use of the footmarks on leg stump, it set about an almighty collapse of four wickets in the space of six overs. A sound position of 173 for two was decimated to 193 for six. That eventually became 246 for 8, when Nash was helpless to keep out a low delivery from Mohammad Azharullah that left one stump standing. Sussex’s hopes of saving face and promotion had all but gone and plans were made by most to spend Friday elsewhere. Instead, tomorrow brings a fascinating conclusion.

Monchi "waiting" to make Aston Villa transfer move for "interesting name"

Aston Villa are looking for the 'right opportunity' to land a statement signing of an international player and President of Football Operations Monchi could 'facilitate' a deal, according to journalist Rudy Galetti.

How has Aston Villa's transfer window gone so far?

Unai Emery has carried out some impressive business this summer in the transfer market, bringing Moussa Diaby, Pau Torres and Youri Tielemans to Villa Park, as per Transfermarkt.

Nevertheless, Aston Villa started their 2023/24 campaign in poor fashion last weekend, suffering a humiliating 5-1 defeat away to Eddie Howe's Newcastle United, as per BBC Sport.

Spaniard Emery reflected on the Villans' heavy loss at St James' Park, as cited by Aston Villa's official website, as he stated: “I’m disappointed. I’m also disappointed with the two injuries we’ve had to Tyrone Mings and Emiliano Buendia. To lose 5-1 is not good for us and we played not deserving to lose 5-1, but a lot of things happened in 90 minutes."

The Daily Mail report that Aston Villa could be set to add another option to their forward line in the form of Galatasaray star Nicolo Zaniolo, who is the subject of a loan offer with a £17 million option-to-buy and would replace Emiliano Buendia, who has been ruled out with a long-term ACL injury.

Earlier in the window, Football Insider claimed that Atletico Madrid striker Joao Felix had been offered to Aston Villa and it goes without saying that much speculation has surrounded the Portugal international's future this window.

What has Rudy Galetti said about Joao Felix?

According to reports in Spain via GOAL, Barcelona are also keen on £241k-a-week ace Felix and could be willing to offer Ansu Fati in exchange to land the former Chelsea loanee.

Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal are also keen on offering Felix an escape route from the Spanish capital and have put a one-year loan deal on the table, as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Galetti has signalled that Aston Villa are waiting for the 'right opportunity' to pounce for Felix.

Galetti stated: “Aston Villa are still waiting for the right opportunity to make some moves as I revealed last week. Joao Felix is an interesting name on their radar that Aston Villa would like to explore.

“For sure it's a complicated path because there is huge interest from Saudi Arabia, especially from Al-Hilal, who are also still in talks with Atletico Madrid for Felix.

“But Aston Villa probably will try to understand the negotiations until the last day of the transfer market window.

“Also because the player would like to play again in the Premier League and the project that Unai Emery and the new sporting director Monchi are carrying out could facilitate his move to Aston Villa. But at the moment this is just an idea.”

What now for Aston Villa?

As per The Athletic, Aston Villa failed in a late attempt to land winger Jack Harrison with Leeds United, who has now officially been announced by Everton on a season-long loan deal.

Reports in Spain via Birmingham Live claim that the Villans are keen on Sevilla left-back Marcos Acuna, who is known by Monchi and has previously faced off against Aston Villa boss Emery when he was in charge at Villarreal.

aster-vranckx-premier-league-burnley-transfers

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has emerged as a shock target for Aston Villa due to Tyrone Mings sustaining a serious injury against Newcastle United, according to FootballTransfers.

Aston Villa face Everton on Sunday in the Premier League at Villa Park and will be looking to improve their fortunes and get their first three points on the board this term, as per Sky Sports.

Wicketkeeper Peter Nevill will return to the Sydney Sixers for the 2017-18 Big Bash League after five seasons with the Melbourne Renegades. Nevill had been part of the Sixers side that won the inaugural BBL in 2011-12, and will return to the franchise on a multi-year deal.Nevill’s New South Wales team-mate, fast bowler Sean Abbott, has also committed to the Sixers.”It was a great opportunity to be back playing with people that I’ve played with extensively at NSW,” Nevill told “One of my fondest cricket memories was winning the BBL 01 title with the Sixers and I’d love to win another one with the same guys. My best mates play for NSW and the Sixers so the ability to play all season with through, through state and then BBL cricket was a real attraction.”The Sixers have a great environment, given the nucleus is similar to NSW, and I love the culture. Another factor was being able to spend the festive period at home in Sydney.”Nevill played 27 matches for the Renegades over five seasons, scoring 186 runs at an average of 13.28 and a strike rate of 97. Last season, he suffered a fractured jaw after a freak accident during a BBL game against the Adelaide Strikers, where he was struck in the face by Brad Hodge’s bat.In the 2016-17 domestic season, Nevill ended up as one of the top-scorers for NSW in the Sheffield Shield, with 625 runs in nine matches, including three hundreds and a fifty.Nevill has not played for Australia since the Hobart Test against South Africa last year. The innings-and-80-run defeat in that match – which was the side’s fifth consecutive Test loss – forced the Australian selectors to revamp the side and Nevill lost his place to Matthew Wade.
