Sutherland approves Australia's bouncer barrage

The Cricket Australia chief executive has given Australia’s short-ball barrage the green light and says it is up to the umpires to intervene if they think play is becoming too dangerous

‘Targeting tail-end a genuine tactical ploy’ – Bird

James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief executive, has given the Test team’s fast bowlers the green light to carry on their concerted short-pitched attack on England’s tail, leaving it up to the game’s neutral umpires to intervene if they think play is becoming too dangerous relative to the skill of the batsman on strike. As one of the game’s most senior administrators, Sutherland signs off on any changes to Test-match playing conditions through his role on the ICC chief executives committee, while Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann also sits on the cricket committee where the laws and conditions under which the game is played are frequently discussed.Though the former England captain Mike Atherton has suggested that the umpires should be more proactive in ensuring that less capable batsmen were not unduly exposed to excessive short-pitched bowling, Sutherland said he saw no problem with pace bowlers searching for weaknesses in the techniques of all batsmen, via short balls or other means, as part of the balance between bat and ball.”I don’t think there’s anything new about fast bowlers attacking tail enders where they show an area of vulnerability. I think that’s all part of the game,” Sutherland said at a CA family day outside the MCG. “What’s also part of the game and the playing regulation and the laws and what have you, that’s up to the umpires to do. I certainly don’t have any problem with fast bowlers attacking batsmen and trying to get them out.”Following the death of Phillip Hughes, after he was struck freakishly on the side of the neck by a bouncer in 2014, Sutherland helped set the terms of reference for CA’s own review, and also attended the New South Wales Coronial Inquest at which it was determined there had been “no malicious intent” in the use of short balls to Hughes on the day he was struck. Before that inquest handed down its findings, Sutherland had spoken of the need to balance the fabric of the game, including the use of bouncers, with safety concerns.”You’ll see in the brief terms of reference we gave David Curtain that we needed to draw a line about the laws of the game and to have some perspective around that,” Sutherland said in May 2016. “You can make the game of cricket a lot safer by playing with a tennis ball, but that’s not how Test cricket has been played and it would obviously be a very different game.”We’re not wanting to go there, but we do need to find the right balance in the circumstances to not compromise the way the game’s played and not compromise the way in which the players are best equipped to show their skills.”Pat Cummins, who has bowled much of the short stuff delivered by Australia’s fast men at the England bowlers, pointed out that it was well known in international cricket that bowlers on all sides are going to “cop it” from their opposite numbers and it was a case of learning to deal with the angle of attack being chosen.”I think they’re all pretty competent batters,” Cummins said. “Stuart Broad’s got a Test match hundred and Anderson’s got an 80-odd so Starcy [Mitchell Starc], Hazlewood, Birdy [Jackson Bird] and I, we know we’re going to cop it as well so we spend lots of time in the nets working on it, working with the coaches and talking to other players about how to best defend it. I think I’ve copped about 50 so far this series so we get back as much as we dish out.”You’re always concerned when someone gets hit in the head, but once you find out they’re ok I think it’s part of cricket, hopefully it will always stay part of cricket. It’s one of the thrills of bowling fast, trying to unsettle the batsman when the pitch might not have sideways movement or swing, so hopefully it stays around our game.”For us, Plan A is always how can we get the batsmen out and at the moment for a few of their guys we think that’s our best chance of getting them out for the least amount of runs. Until that changes our plans will play pretty solid.”James Anderson has spoken of the experience of being struck on the helmet by Cummins in the closing stages of the Perth Test, and also countered that he did not think the difference in pace between the two teams had been as large a factor in the series as many have observed. Instead, he felt the Australians had benefited from some poor England shot selection.”I don’t know if you’ve ever been messing around with mates and someone slaps you on your ear, it’s kind of a real shock,” Anderson told the BBC. “You’re obviously not expecting to get hit on the head but you’ve got that split second where you know it’s going to hit you. It’s not ideal. It’s happened to me a few times in my career. We’re very fortunate in this day and age that the helmets are such high quality. I turned my head and just braced for impact … I had a bit of a sore jaw for a couple of days.””It’s not necessarily the pace but where the ball is and the plans they’ve had have worked well. Even me as a No.11, you get used to that pace. I honestly don’t think the pace has actually caused us any issues. If you look at our dismissals, we sometimes haven’t necessarily got out to the good balls.”

Rangers: £4m signing was Beale’s Old Firm villain

Glasgow Rangers head into the international break off the back of a disappointing week as they lost the Old Firm clash 1-0 on Sunday after their 5-1 defeat to PSV their Champions League qualifier in midweek.

How did Rangers lose to Celtic?

The Light Blues were on the back foot for the majority of the first half as Michael Beale's tactic appeared to be to sit back and soak up the pressure at Ibrox.

Kyogo Furuhashi had a glorious chance to open the scoring as Matt O’Riley sent him one-on-one against Jack Butland down the right channel but the Japan international saw his effort blocked by Connor Goldson.

The home side then thought they had the lead as Cyriel Dessers squared for Kemar Roofe to slam the ball in, only for the referee to rule it out for a foul in the build-up by the Gers number nine after a VAR check.

Kyogo then found his shooting boots just before halftime as a mistake from Goldson at the back allowed him to rifle a terrific half-volley into the bottom corner.

That said, the Gers centre-back wasn't the only underperformer as £4m signing Cyriel Dessers was also below par.

How did Cyriel Dessers perform against Celtic?

There were a number of disappointing performances on the pitch for the Gers and Dessers was arguably the worst of the lot as he struggled badly at the top end of the pitch.

Whilst Goldson was caught out with a poor header that led to Kyogo's goal, the English central defender also made a number of vital interventions, including his heroic block to deny the Japanese forward earlier in the match, and recorded a Sofascore rating of 7.5 – the highest of any Rangers player.

The Nigeria international, however, did very little to redeem himself in a lacklustre display in his first experience of the Old Firm clash due to a lack of physicality and quality on the ball.

Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers.

Chris Sutton bemoaned the lack of bravery in possession by Rangers during the Sky Sports commentary of the game but the midfield and full-backs were not helped by a lack of movement ahead of them at times.

Dessers did make a few interesting runs in behind to stretch the Celtic defence but did not do it often enough to forge any real chances and looked far too isolated at times due to his failure to pick up intelligent positions to receive the ball and link up the play.

This was reflected in his passing numbers as he ended the match with a meagre six completed passes out of 13 attempted, which is a success rate of just 46%, as per Sofascore.

With those touches, the 6 foot 1 flop managed to complete one of his two attempted dribbles and missed one 'big chance' as he failed to make the most of a creative pass from Todd Cantwell into the box.

He also lost six of his eight ground duels as the Nigerian frontman allowed Gustaf Lagerbielke and Liam Scales to dominate him on the deck with ease, which meant that the ball continually came back towards Rangers' goal as he was unable to retain possession or hold it up to help out his teammates.

Evidently, Dessers was the Old Firm villain for Beale as his poor performance, on and off the ball, played a significant role in their struggles going forward, whereas Goldson had one dreadful moment but fortunately regained composure to put in a solid display.

Eu acredito muito no potencial do nosso time.

Sunderland: Mowbray has exciting Ross Stewart heir in the academy

Sunderland have been able to bring through a number of talented players through their academy system over the years to bolster their first team or move on to other clubs.

Who is the most expensive Sunderland academy graduate?

The Black Cats have the likes of Anthony Patterson, Dan Neil, and Chris Rigg currently in their squad after their progression from academy to senior football.

Whether any of them fetch a mega fee remains to be seen, with the likes of Jordan Pickford, Jordan Henderson and Co making Sunderland big bucks in years gone by.

Valuations via Transfermarkt.

It will be interesting to see how that list looks in five to ten years when the current crop of youth prospects on Wearside are given the chance to showcase their ability at first-team level.

Alongside Rigg, one player who could be set for a breakout year is Harry Gardiner.

Who is Harry Gardiner?

One of those potential first-team stars in the future is U21 centre-forward Gardiner, a 19-year-old English number nine residing in the Academy of Light.

He was born just up the road from Sunderland in Alnwick and started his youth career with Shields before completing a move to the Stadium of Light on a free transfer midway through the 2020/21 campaign.

How much does Harry Gardiner earn?

According to Salary Sport, the striker is currently on a wage of £430-per-week, which places him joint-tenth among academy players at the club.

It is considerably less than the £15k-per-week that first-team star Jack Clarke is said to be on, with the former Tottenham Hotspur magician being the team's top earner at present.

Gardiner has a long way to go before being closer to the top of the list but he could get there if a first-team opportunity arises and he is able to make the most of it over the years to come.

How many goals has Harry Gardiner scored?

The 19-year-old has been an impressive scorer at U18 and U21 level for Sunderland and as a result, the youth team star could be Tony Mowbray's eventual heir to Ross Stewart, who departed the club earlier this month.

Former Sunderland striker Ross Stewart.

Gardiner joined the club's U18 side in 2021 and initially struggled to find his feet during his first season. He scored twice and assisted just one goal in 15 U18 Premier League matches, which shows that the teen found it difficult to make an impact at the top end of the pitch on a regular basis.

However, the former Shields gem eventually found stable footing during the 2021/22 campaign as he plundered six goals and one assist in ten league matches for the U18 team.

This led to him being moved to the U21 side for the start of the 2022/23 season where Gardiner proved that he was ready for the step up to that level.

The Black Cats prodigy produced seven goals in 12 Premier League 2 games but only started ten of those matches, which included 9.4 full 90 minutes. This means that he found the back of the net an impressive 0.75 times per 90 on average, better than one every other match.

In fact, Sunderland's U21 team benefited from him being on the pitch as they outscored the opposition 21 goals to 19 during his appearances. The team averaged 0.21 goals more than the other side per 90, meaning he impressively helped the U21s to be successful with his performances, and goals, last season.

Gardiner has failed to score in the first three games of the current campaign but has racked up two goals in his last two appearances against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in the Premier League Cup and Premier League 2.

How many goals did Ross Stewart score for Sunderland?

The now-Southampton striker enjoyed a fantastic spell on Wearside after his move to England from Scottish side Ross County in January 2021.

Stewart managed three goals in 12 League One appearances during the second half of that season, which included one goal in the play-offs.

Former Sunderland striker Ross Stewart.

He then hit his stride throughout the 2021/22 campaign as the Scottish star produced an outstanding 26 goals and three assists in 49 League One matches to help Sunderland earn promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.

The 6 foot 3 centre-forward averaged a fantastic Sofascore rating of 7.25, which was the highest rating within the squad that term, and showcased his creative quality with nine 'big chances' provided for his teammates.

Stewart was able to follow that up with a sensational start to the 2022/23 season with the Black Cats as he took the division by storm.

The Scotland international netted an outstanding ten goals and assisted three in 13 league matches prior to suffering a season-ending Achilles injury at the start of this year.

He averaged a phenomenal Sofascore rating of 7.40, which was the highest within the squad for the second campaign in succession, whilst only two players – Oliver Norwood and Ryan Manning – averaged higher scores within the division.

In total, Stewart scored 40 goals in 80 appearances for Sunderland before his move to Southampton for a reported £12m on deadline day.

What does the future hold for Gardiner?

Gardiner plundered 15 goals in 27 games for Sunderland's U18 and U21 teams combined since the start of the 2021/22 campaign, meaning that he has scored once every 1.8 outings on average.

Whereas, Stewart managed to score one goal every two matches on average for the first team throughout his time at the Stadium of Light.

This suggests that the potential is there for Gardiner, who signed a new contract this summer, to be a Stewart-esque figure for Mowbray if the 19-year-old can translate his academy form over to the senior squad in the future.

Journalist Josh Bunting hailed his "excellent" performances last term and stated that the prolific teen is "scoring goals", something that is certainly backed up by the statistics.

It remains to be seen whether or not Mowbray will offer him the opportunity to make an impact at first-team level this season but the academy star's goalscoring record is nothing to be sniffed at and the manager could unearth his Stewart replacement by giving him a chance this season.

Environment around Bangladesh team 'dirty' – Khaled Mahmud

Bangladesh technical director Khaled Mahmud has said he is no longer interested in working with the national team

Khaled Mahmud is no longer interested in the job of Bangladesh team’s technical director, saying the environment around the players has become “dirty”. He made these comments after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said it was unlikely to find a head coach before the Nidahas Trophy in March. It is increasingly possible that the current coaching setup will go with the team to the T20 tournament in Sri Lanka considering the board has already rejected Richard Pybus and Phil Simmons’ applications for the head coach’s position.Mahmud said Bangladesh’s loss in the ODI tri-series final and the Test series has put him under pressure. He claimed he was being unfairly targeted, even though several previous Bangladesh coaches had begun their careers with defeats. Dav Whatmore, Jamie Siddons and Chandika Hathurusingha had all started their stints poorly.”Personally I am no longer interested to work with Bangladesh cricket,” Mahmud said. “I honestly feel it is becoming very dirty. I have always worked for the development of Bangladesh cricket. There is no self-interest involved [on my part]. But I am no longer interested.”The board will decide whether I should be going to the Nidahas Trophy. The fact that I am still around after our defeats is the biggest talking point. A lot of big coaches started off with bad results. Bangladesh’s performance may be because of our planning but there are more stories.”The only stories he elaborated upon were his gripe with the media and the talk about the Dhaka pitch. Mahmud questioned the Bangladesh players whom he said were not ready to battle on the spin-friendly track.”I don’t want to give any excuses whether it was a turning wicket or a bouncy track. If I am a player, I should play well in all types of wickets. There’s no point using the wickets as an excuse.”Wasn’t the wicket tough for Roshen Silva who was playing only his second Test match? He struggled, he fought. We didn’t fight. I didn’t see that someone struggled for a long time and then got out to a brilliant delivery. It becomes viral when people start talking about the wicket,” he said.Mahmud said that they had prepared well in advance to play on spin-friendly pitches, and reiterated that Sri Lanka’s lack of experience meant that they could have been easily countered in home conditions.”Everyone knew how the wicket would play at least 15-20 days ahead. We were unlucky in Chittagong where the wicket didn’t play as it should have. If we could play against Australia on a turning wicket, so is Sri Lanka God?”What do the Sri Lankans have that we can’t play against them? They only had Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva. How many Tests have they played?”.
