Man City: Blues likely to sell "superb" ace in 2024; Pep doesn’t trust him

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has an issue of trust with one first-team player who could now exit the club in January, according to a report.

Manchester City updates: Liverpool clash twist, Kroos on radar, Vermeeren latest

As per The Daily Mail, Manchester City's upcoming Premier League clash against Liverpool on November 25th has been moved from a 5:30 pm start to a 12:30 pm kick-off due to potential fan trouble at the Etihad Stadium.

Arsenal were originally scheduled to face Brentford at 12:30 pm; however, both fixtures will now effectively swap times and prevent the chances of trouble in and around the ground between rival supporters.

In a shock Manchester City transfer update emerging out of Spain, Real Madrid veteran Toni Kroos is believed to be a target for the Citizens once his contract expires at the Santiago Bernabeu next summer.

The report states that the Germany international could receive around double his wages at Manchester City if he was to move to England in 2024. During the summer transfer window, Kroos rejected advances from the Saudi Pro League and Major League Soccer to pen a 12-month extension to his deal at La Liga giants Real Madrid. Nevertheless, Guardiola and his recruitment team are now said to be leading the chase for the former Bayern Munich star.

Royal Antwerp midfielder Arthur Vermeeren is claimed to be attracting attention from Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur alongside a host of clubs in mainland Europe as he continues to make waves in his homeland this campaign.

Manchester City transfer news – Kalvin Phillips potential exit

According to a Manchester City transfer update on Kalvin Phillips from Football Insider, it is believed that the England international is likely to leave the Etihad Stadium in 2024 after falling out of favour under Citizens boss Guardiola this term. The report states that Phillips now finds himself essentially frozen out at Manchester City due to the summer arrivals of Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes.

Guardiola left Phillips out of his side's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal last weekend at the Emirates Stadium, instead opting to utilise Rico Lewis and Bernardo Silva in a double pivot, which the outlet indicates is a sign that the former Barcelona boss doesn't trust Phillips to perform and could now pave the way for his eventual departure.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Since joining Manchester City from Leeds United for a fee in the region of £43 million in 2022, Phillips has gone on to make just 26 appearances in total for his current employers and is yet to register a single goal or assist (Phillips statistics – Transfermarkt).

Despite being hailed as "superb" by Barcelona manager Xavi back in 2021, it is hard to see a way back for Phillips at the Etihad and he may now have to seek a new challenge in the near future to avoid a prolonged career stagnation.

Spirited Australia can't mask batting frailties as Moeen Ali spins England to victory

England put their recent indignities behind them to steal a march in the first ODI at The Kia Oval

The Report by Andrew Miller13-Jun-20181:56

Social story: England take the series lead

England 218 for 7 (Morgan 69, Root 50) beat Australia 214 (Maxwell 62, Plunkett 3-42 Moeen 3-43) by three wickets
Live scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThey were handing out sandpaper boundary placards on the way up from Vauxhall Tube Station, but in the end, nothing could smooth away the rough edges in Australia’s new-look batting line-up. Despite their rookie bowling attack mounting a spirited defence of a substandard target of 215, England overcame a double dose of jitters to seal a three-wicket victory in the first ODI at The Kia Oval. Most of the pre-series focus had, rightly, been on the absence of Australia’s finest two batsmen, David Warner and Steven Smith, and, as might have been expected, they struggled to mitigate for that void in class. After winning the toss on a bright afternoon in South London, Australia mustered 214 in 47 overs, the sort of slow-death innings that exposed their shortcomings more comprehensively than a full-on batting collapse could have done.Nevertheless, England aren’t without a few notable embarrassments in their (very) recent history, and only days after failing to close out a chase of 372 to hand Scotland a famous victory, they came improbably close to stumbling in pursuit of a target of barely half that height. The beanpole seamer Billy Stanlake was the catalyst for Australia’s defiance, bowling Jason Roy second-ball for a duck as England slipped to 38 for 3 at the top of their innings, before Andrew Tye and his illegible T20 variations came to the fore in the tense closing stages. In the end it was left to David Willey to haul England over the line with an improbably grindy knock of 35 from 41 balls, with Liam Plunkett unbowed for the second match running on 3. But even then, England still won with a handsome 36 deliveries to spare, which spoke to the gulf in batting quality more eloquently than the official margin of victory. That was largely a testament to the elder-statesman class of Joe Root and Eoin Morgan. Their fourth-wicket stand of 115 in 21 overs managed to combine defensive accumulation with calculated aggression in a manner that Australia’s own middle order had been unable to replicate. Without such knowhow to rescue their innings, England really would have been in the soup. But then again, that is the entire point of experience. Before the start of play, Tim Paine had seemed visibly excited at the prospect of ending all the talk of sledging and cheating, and getting back to the day job. But, by the innings break, the captain who had instigated a pre-match handshake with his opponents to mark the start of a new era for his team might have been wondering if he was really that keen to starting talking about actual cricket once again. The early exchanges of Australia’s innings amounted to a vivisection of the tourists’ anxieties in overseas conditions. Willey’s prodigious new-ball swing accounted for Travis Head via a flat-footed slash to slip from his second delivery, before Moeen Ali came whirling through the middle overs, putting his miserable winter behind him with single-spell figures of 10-1-43-3 that might have been lifted straight out of the 1997 Texaco Trophy.Four balls into Moeen’s spell, Aaron Finch gave himself room outside off to pick out short third man with an ambitious wipe. Two balls into his second over, Shaun Marsh stayed leg-side of a well-flighted tweaker, a la Ben Duckett in Bangladesh, and lost his off stump for 24. And when Paine himself, desperate to set a tempo, any tempo, offered catching practice to short third man with a muffed reverse sweep, Moeen’s figures were 3 for 11 in 4.1 overs. After that, it was a given that he’d bowl his spell straight through. Adil Rashid kept him company for a six-over burst of his own, in which time he scalped Marcus Stoinis for 22, before Glenn Maxwell rode to the rescue of his team’s dignity, if not the overall match situation. A restorative 84-run stand for the sixth wicket ended when Plunkett induced a top-edged a pull to deep square leg, and when Ashton Agar misread the length of a Rashid legbreak to be plumb lbw for 40, the tail were rounded up meekly. But there was nothing meek about the response of Stanlake in particular. In the absence of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, this was his chance to demonstrate the timeless virtues of hitting a good length at 90mph. Roy survived one ball before losing the top of his off stump to a beautiful nipbacker, and when the debutant Michael Neser made it two wicket-maidens in the space of four overs by pinning Alex Hales on leg stump, the game was officially afoot.Jonny Bairstow, with three ODI hundreds in as many innings, once again looked a different class in easing to 28 from 22 balls with six outstanding boundaries. But then he nailed a pull straight into the hands of the lone man at square leg to give Kane Richardson his breakthrough, and England faced a test of their ego at 38 for 3.But Root and Morgan swallowed their pride and ate up the overs with deft sweeps, well-placed drives and sharp judgement of the quick singles. By the 29th over, they were 153 for 3 and cruising; three overs later, they’d lost both of their set batsman plus the dangerous Jos Buttler as well, who may be in some of the best form of his life, but today read Tye’s knuckle ball as if it was a Jaipur railway timetable. He had already been dropped off Stanlake – a swirling chance to Paine behind the stumps, who spilled it as his elbows hit the ground – when he scuffed a drive to mid-off.Moeen, determined to carry on playing his way despite criticism of his dismissal at the Grange, looked to have the chase in hand when he holed out to deep midwicket to give Neser his second and ignite that debate all over again. But in the end, he’d already done enough with the ball to ensure that England’s wobbles would not be terminal.

Aston Villa now eyeing move to re-sign 6’3 ace who starred under Dean Smith

From relegation fears to the joys of Europa Conference League qualification, and the start to the current campaign which has left them just one point adrift of the Premier League's top four, to say Unai Emery's tenure at Aston Villa has been a success so far would be an understatement. A key feature of the Spaniard's time in charge has been his side's attacking force, too, with the likes of Ollie Watkins finding his golden touch once again.

The former Brentford star has since been joined by the likes of Moussa Diaby and Nicolo Zaniolo, who have got off to electric starts at Villa Park to stick to the impressive trend in the Midlands. The Villans may not stop adding to their attack just yet, either, with reports suggesting that they're eyeing a move for a former star.

Aston Villa transfer news

Villa's recruitment team deserves a lot of credit for their work in recent years. Whether it's been Watkins, Matty Cash, Douglas Luiz, or Diaby, the majority of arrivals have instantly found their feet, and have since become vital parts of Emery's side gunning for even greater heights. When the January transfer window comes around, they may well welcome more firepower too. At least, that's what the latest Tammy Abraham transfer news suggests.

According to TeamTalk, the striker could follow Jose Mourinho out of the door at AS Roma if the former Tottenham Hotspur boss is sacked or resigns this season. And that has put Villa, Brentford, and Chelsea on alert, with all three clubs interested in the forward, who has a reported price-tag of £45m.

Villa reportedly see Abraham as an ideal replacement for Watkins, should their star striker decide to depart in the coming months. Abraham's stats whilst on loan at Villa Park in the 2018/19 season were impressive, too, with 27 goal involvements in just 34 games under Dean Smith, meaning that a return would be no bad thing for all parties involved.

Tammy Abraham's record at Roma is fantastic

Abraham's stats have struggled with injuries since his successful debut season at Roma in the 2021/22 campaign, in which he scored 27 goals and assisted a further five in all competitions. Last season, by contrast, the England international managed just nine goals and seven assists, before suffering an untimely ACL injury at the back end of the campaign.

Still sidelined through injury, Abraham faces a frustrating wait to return. When he does though, he could be the subject of interest from Premier League clubs, potentially leading to a return. When fit and firing, Abraham's height, standing 6 foot 3, certainly adds an asset to a side currently depending on Watkins' pace and movement – add in his goalscoring ability and the praise he has received comes as little surprise.

Former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard previously told the Blues' official website: "I’m delighted with Tammy. He has a really great attitude in training, a desire to score goals and his all-round game was really good as well. Myself and the staff are working closely with him on little bits of his game where I think he can be even better and he’s been very receptive to that."

Karunaratne wants '20 to 25 Test hundreds'

The opener currently has eight, after his Player-of-the-Series performance against South Africa

Andrew Fidel Fernando23-Jul-2018

AFP

Until South Africa finally located their batting backbone in the last innings of the series, Sri Lanka opener Dimuth Karunaratne had outscored their entire team in the series. Karunaratne’s aggregate of 356 runs at an average of 118.66 and a strike rate in the mid-sixties is staggering enough in a bowling-dominated series. But, that he was so prolific – passing 50 in each of his innings – after having missed the last series in the West Indies due to a hand injury, is especially impressive.Having now hit hundreds against Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and South Africa since the start of 2017, Karunaratne has his sights set on a career goal that only the very good Test batsmen achieve. He is increasingly thought of as a reliable run-scorer in this Sri Lanka team, and has claimed a top-ten place in the ICC’s Test batting rankings for the first time.”My personal goal that I would be happy with is to get to 20 to 25 Test hundreds, and hopefully one day I will get there,” he said. “I want to be a match-winning performer and give my best. When I do that rankings will automatically come.”Karunaratne currently has eight tons. He has become a specialist on difficult pitches – especially those that take substantial turn, as his 158 not out in Galle in the first Test suggested. Karunaratne totaled 218 runs in a match where no other batsmen hit a fifty.Karunaratne has spoken of the positive approach he has against spin, but he also revealed that he had been working on specific strokes with coaches in the past few months. “I had a few chats with my school coach recently, and Hashan Tillakaratne has been a great help, along with batting coach Thilan Samaraweera,” he said. “With Hashan, I worked on stuff like the sweep and reverse sweep. Those are must-have shots when fielders are close in. When you play the sweep or reverse sweep, the field spreads.”Although breaking his hand in domestic cricket in May forced him to miss the series in West Indies in June, Karunaratne did play some cricket – the selectors sending him to Bangladesh with the Sri Lanka A team for two unofficial Tests. It was in Bangladesh, Karunaratne said, that this current run of form began.”Actually, when the West Indies Tests started, I was fit. But I didn’t have any match practice behind me. So the selectors told me to be fit for South Africa series and wanted me to play Bangaldesh games. That was a good call, because even when I started playing in that series, I wasn’t too confident in my body. I was fearful that the hand might break again. But once I spent a couple of hours at the crease, I started to feel like it was ok, and I sort of slipped into my natural game.”The pity for Karunaratne is that although he is in excellent touch, there are no matches for him to play in the coming months. Sri Lanka’s next Test is not until November, and there are no domestic matches scheduled in the interim. He is now resigned to doing as much work in the nets as possible in the nets, before England arrive for a three-Test series.”That’s the biggest challenge for someone who is a Test specialist – you have to go months without a game. This time, since the Bangladesh A matches were there, I could get back to form. Breaks are good, but I need to be at the top of my game. To get back to being that settled at the crease and to keep that intensity is not easy. But I have done that thorughout my career. If there are any domestic matches – any kinds of matches – before the next Test, I will definitely play them.”

Rangers could land dream Danilo foil with swoop for "different class" 6 ft 1 ace

Former Glasgow Rangers head coach Michael Beale was allowed to complete an overhaul of his playing squad ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The English tactician decided to shake things up after the club failed to bring a single piece of silverware back to Ibrox at the end of last season, with a host of players moving on or coming in.

Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, Glen Kamara, Allan McGregor, Scott Arfield, Antonio Colak, and Ianis Hagi were among those who moved on, either on free transfers, on a permanent basis, or on loan.

These exits opened the door for new signings to be brought in and Beale was able to snap up nine new recruits throughout the summer transfer window.

As you can see in the table above, the ex-Gers boss splashed the cash on three new centre-forward options to bolster their attacking options after Colak and Morelos' departures.

Lammers was reportedly brought in from Atalanta for a fee of £3.5m, whilst Dessers came in for an initial £4.3m from Italian side Cremonese. Danilo was the most expensive acquisition, though, as he was signed from Feyenoord for a fee that could rise to £6m.

The former two have struggled to hit their stride in Glasgow and new manager Philippe Clement could look to the January transfer window to reignite the club's interest in Hearts forward Lawrence Shankland, who could be a dream foil for Danilo.

Rangers' interest in Shankland

TEAMtalk reported in June of this year that the Gers were eyeing up a possible swoop to sign the Scottish Premiership marksman to improve their attack.

The outlet claimed that he ranked highly in Beale's list of number nine targets and that the Ibrox giants were considering whether or not to submit an offer for his services.

At that point, only Sterling, Dowell, and Butland had been signed by Rangers. This means that their interest in Shankland predated the deals for Dessers, Lammers, and Danilo.

Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland.

However, it remains unknown as to why the Gers and Beale opted against a swoop for the Scottish marksman in order to pursue the other three, who did eventually arrive in Glasgow.

Clement could now look to put that right by reigniting the interest in Shankland for the January transfer window. Journalist Jonny McFarlane recently claimed that the club will need to sign another number nine at the start of next year and stated that the Hearts star did his chances no harm with his performance against the Light Blues.

Shankland's performance against Rangers

The Gers beat Hearts 2-1 at Ibrox on Sunday and the right-footed whiz gave a great account of himself with his display at the top end of the pitch for the away side.

His goal gave the visitors a shock lead after just five minutes as Shankland peeled off Ben Davies and pinned himself on the undersized Ridvan Yilmaz, who could do nothing to prevent the striker from powering in a fantastic header past Jack Butland at the far post.

As shown by the statistics above, the 28-year-old finisher produced a sublime all-around display and was unfortunate to be on the losing side on the day.

He showcased his goalscoring quality along with his progressive play in possession, by taking players on and creating a chance for one of his teammates, along with the physical presence his frame allows him to provide.

Standing at 6 foot 1, Shankland could be a dream foil for Danilo, who stands at 5 foot 9, to play off at the top end of the pitch at Ibrox during the second half of the season.

Shankland's statistics for Hearts

Above all else, the Scotland international is a proven Premiership performer who could come in and hit the ground running as a reliable goalscorer for Clement.

Since the start of the 2022/23 campaign, the Hearts ace has plundered an eye-catching 27 goals and four assists in 47 appearances for the club.

Hearts attacker Lawrence Shankland.

This means that the former Dundee United dynamo has averaged a goal or an assist in the top-flight once every 1.52 matches in that time.

The powerful gem, who was described as "different class" by journalist Joel Sked last season, has also won 1.6 aerial duels per game this term and showcased his ability in the air, which was on display against Rangers on Sunday.

Danilo's statistics for Rangers

Since joining from Feyenoord, the 24-year-old forward has scored three goals in seven Premiership matches for the Scottish giants, despite only starting two of those games.

The Brazilian whiz, who has also scored one goal in one League Cup clash, has not offered as much of a presence in the air, in terms of winning flick-ons and holding the ball up, with 1.1 aerial battles won per league outing.

He has been able to score a couple of well-taken headers in the Premiership but Shankland's presence as a target man of sorts to hold the ball up and bring others into play could allow Danilo to focus on his movement around the box to sniff out chances in front of goal.

Therefore, they could form a dream pairing at the top end of the pitch with their respective qualities and Rangers must swoop to sign the Hearts man to replace Dessers or Lammers, who have both failed to offer much in a Gers shirt so far.

Dessers has scored two goals and missed a staggering nine 'big chances' in nine Premiership outings, whilst Lammers has one goal and zero assists in ten league clashes for the club this season.

Both players have been unable to make a consistent impact on the pitch and have been outscored by Danilo at league level, despite the forward starting six fewer matches than both of them have (eight).

Shankland's record in the Premiership since the start of last term suggests that he has the quality to come in and be a dream foil for the Brazilian whilst also being an upgrade on Dessers and Lammers.
