Sanju Samson is among 13 players who have been punished by the Kerala Cricket Association for dissent against captain Sachin Baby. Five of the players have been suspended for three matches, while eight have been fined the equivalent of BCCI match fees for three one-day games. The five players who are suspended are Raiphi Gomez, Sandeep Warrier, Rohan Prem, KM Asif and Mohammed Azharuddeen. The eight who have only earned fines are Abhishek Mohan, KC Akshay, Fabid Ahmed, MD Nidheesh, Salman Nizar, Sijomon Joseph, VA Jagadeesh and Samson. The fees collected by all the players will go to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief fund, and the players have to remit the amount by September 15, and submit proof that they have done so to the KCA.The five who have been suspended will miss Kerala’s first three matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 50-overs competition. Kerala are in Group B, and their first three games are against Chhattisgarh (September 19), Hyderabad (September 20) and Odisha (September 23).ESPNcricinfo understands that the 13 players had written a letter to the KCA during a recent visit by a Kerala side to Sri Lanka in June, stating that they were unhappy with Baby’s leadership. However, they didn’t discuss the issue with Baby or the manager on tour, and instead went directly to the KCA.The KCA conducted an enquiry and came to the conclusion that “the players were involved in endangering the harmony, stability and interest of the Association and also engaged in the signature campaign against the captain. There was a deliberate intention to defame the captain as well as KCA.”People close to the team indicated that dissatisfaction with Baby’s leadership had been ongoing for several seasons now, though KCA officials countered by questioning the timing of the protest, saying that no players had raised any protest last year when Kerala made the Ranji Trophy 2017-18 quarterfinals, going down to eventual champions Vidarbha by 412 runs.In a separate sanction, the KCA issued show-cause notices to Samson, Akshay, Nizar and Azharuddeen for “unauthorised absence” from the team hotel during the Capt K Thimmappiah Memorial tournament conducted by the Karnataka State Cricket Association during July-August. Kerala didn’t qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament, where teams play each other in three-day fixtures. Samson had earlier been let off with a reprimand by KCA after a similar offence during the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy. On that occasion too, there were conflicting reports about the alleged offence, with the KCA and others seen to be close to Baby alleging indiscipline and Samson maintaining that he was innocent.

No regrets for Liam Plunkett after putting wedding ahead of England duty

Fast bowler has lost his starting berth to Olly Stone, but insists he’s comfortable with competition for places

When you’re part of an outfit that is as successful and confident as this England one-day team, players are driven forward by all sorts of surprising pressures.Take the case of fast bowler Liam Plunkett. He is a high-performing incumbent in the side, having taken 54 wickets at an average of 23.83 since the start of 2017. Aside from his bowling, Plunkett has also been known to give the ball a clobbering, batting in the lower order. But having missed the first three ODIs to get married – an unforeseen scheduling change in the series meant the clash could not be avoided – Plunkett returns in the knowledge that there are others now vying for his place in the XI.”We were so far into the wedding preparation, and with my wife Emeleah being American, a lot of people had booked flights, and I wasn’t interested in paying them back,” Plunkett said of missing the start of the series. “But in the back of your mind you know someone will come in and do well – that’s just sport, right? It’s good for the team that people come in and do well. I think England know what I can bring to the game.”And if I don’t get the nudge, I will graft hard. People forget for the first seven years of my England career, I didn’t play, I was 12th man the whole time. I know how to deal with the situation. Hopefully I get the nod and play one or two games here, but if not I’ll hopefully get a go again.”The man who replaced him in the XI for the two games that have been played so far, was Olly Stone – a 25-year-old capable of regularly breaching 145kph. Stone had troubled the Sri Lanka top order in the second ODI, taking the wicket of opener Niroshan Dickwella with a sharp bouncer, and beating several other batsmen with deliveries that he got to seam off the pitch, as well as bounce.England captain Eoin Morgan had been impressed by that performance, and even pointed out an area in which Stone is perhaps better than the man he has stepped in for: where Plunkett’s pace is used primarily during the middle overs and the death, Stone could be used as a new-ball option as well. As a result, there’s now a little extra strain on Plunkett to work on his new-ball bowling.”I don’t look for a ball in the nets that’s old – I always pick a new ball up because you want to work on your skills,” Plunkett said. “In T20 it’s similar, you might be on in the second or third over when the ball’s new. I used to be a swing bowler, but now I’m more of a hit-the-deck bowler. Who knows? As I get older a little swing might come back into my game and in two or three years I might be opening the bowling again.”In any case, for now, England have the option of not rushing Plunkett back into the XI. Plunkett only arrived in Sri Lanka on Tuesday, and perhaps has not quite acclimatised as well as his teammates yet. He insists, though, that he is not short of bowling practice.”I did a lot in the last six or seven weeks, I found an indoor centre so I was bowling 30 or 40 overs a week. I’ve been keeping tabs on it and training hard. I don’t think I’m lacking overs, I’ve bowled a lot. It’s just getting used to the temperature.”

Fábio Santos lamenta empate do Corinthians, mas vê evolução do time

Leeds want to sign "incredible" forward likened to Franck Ribery

Leeds United want to sign a pacey new forward in the January transfer window, coming after he was once compared to France legend Franck Ribery.

Leeds enjoy promising start under Farke

The appointment of former Norwich City boss Daniel Farke in July has, thus far, may have been proved the right call, with Leeds looking like fairly safe contenders for promotion back to the Premier League.

While the Whites have dropped points in seven Championship matches this season, Leeds were in fine form prior to the international break.

Winning four out of their last five league games, Farke's side were starting to gain real momentum. They next take on struggling Rotherham United before hosting Swansea City at Elland Road – two games where Leeds look odds-on to reign victorious.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

Speaking on the Monday Night Club last month (via Leeds Live), pundit Chris Sutton tipped Leeds for immediate promotion while expressing his belief that Farke is indeed the right man.

"He's not an exact like-for-like [replacement]. He obviously managed Norwich City, got them a couple of promotions out of the Championship but struggled in the Premier League," Sutton said.

"I don't necessarily think that was all down to him, the squad just wasn't strong enough. In terms of Leeds fans wanting an attacking brand of football, he certainly ticks that box.

"He has had so much to deal with, there's been a big overturn of players, and I suppose his biggest issue is all Leeds fans wanting to find the next Bielsa. I think he will get them up this season, I really do, just because of his knowledge of the Championship, his nous and know-how, and the way he sets his teams up. I think Leeds have done well to appoint him."

Leeds United's home stadium, Elland Road.

However, with the January transfer window approaching, it is believed that Leeds are plotting ways to strengthen and reinforce Farke's push to the top flight.

Leeds eye Ryan Kent loan deal

Indeed, it is believed club chiefs are now weighing up a move for Fenerbahce winger and ex-Rangers star Ryan Kent.

The 27-year-old, since opting for a Turkish Super Lig move after leaving Ibrox on a free, has struggled under manager Ismail Kartal – who doesn't seem to favour him.

Kent has made just seven league appearances this season, with only one of them being a start. As a result, it appears Fenerbahce are willing to let him leave on a temporary deal in January.

This is where Farke's men come in, as according to TEAMtalk, it is believed that Leeds are keen on signing Kent mid-season.

Kent has previously been praised for his "incredible" speed by former Gers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst, with Owen Hargreaves once telling TNT Sports that he can be a bit like Franck Ribery.

“I love watching Ryan Kent; technically, he’s absolutely brilliant. It looked like Franck Ribery when he used to do it for Bayern," said Hargreaves on the winger after a past performance against Borussia Dortmund (via Liverpool Echo).

“Absolutely exceptional with the ball at his feet, running at players is his greatest attribute. He shocked everyone there. Dortmund won’t have known much about him, but in the changing room, they’ll be asking who he is.

“Premier League clubs will be looking at him. He caused so many issues for Dortmund.”

No rest for James Anderson as he seeks satisfaction in Sri Lanka 'challenge'

James Anderson concedes that he and senior partner Stuart Broad might face rotation in Sri Lanka but he is still keen to ‘put in the hard yards’ for England

George Dobell in Galle03-Nov-20181:49

Butcher: I’d pick Stone over Broad for first Sri Lanka Test

James Anderson has admitted he feels he “hasn’t quite cracked” the challenge of bowling with the Kookaburra ball.Despite recently overtaking Glenn McGrath to become the most prolific seam bowler in the history of Test cricket, Anderson accepts that his record at home – where he has claimed 368 Test wickets as a cost of 23.76 apiece – is far better than his record away (196 wickets at 32.62). One of the reasons for that home success is the use of the Duke’s ball, which swings for longer than the Kookaburra and other varieties, in England’s home Tests.Partly as a result of that, Anderson had no hesitation in declining the opportunity of skipping the tour of Sri Lanka. While he knows there may be some tough days ahead, he said he gains more satisfaction from “a good day here” than when “bowling on a green seamer in England in April”.There had been talk ahead of the tour that either Anderson or Stuart Broad, perhaps even both of them, could be rested in order to protect them in light of the challenges ahead – notably an Ashes series in England in 2019 – and to take a look at their possible successors.Anderson also acknowledged that, aged 36, he may not have many more opportunities for such tours and that with his white-ball career behind him – at international level, at least – the workload expected of him and Broad was far more manageable.”There was a question asked if I was keen to go on tour in the winter and I said, ‘Yes’,” Anderson said. “And that was pretty much the end of it.”The amount of cricket I play at the moment – and Stuart Broad would say the same for himself – means there’s no reason why we can’t be fit for all the Test cricket. We don’t play any white-ball cricket and there are plenty of gaps in between Test series for us to rest and recuperate and get fit for the next one.”It may be my last trip to Sri Lanka – or my penultimate one, anyway [England return in early 2020] – it’s a great place to tour and I’m going to enjoy it while I can.”It is a huge challenge for seam bowlers out here, but when you have a good day here you get more satisfaction than bowling on a green seamer in England in April. When you’re dripping with sweat, covered in mud, you know you’ve had a hard day, I think you get more out of that. You’ve put in the hard yards for the team.Stuart Broad and James Anderson could be rotated during the Test series•Getty Images

“The surfaces are very dry and the two we have played on this week have been really flat, too. So it’s a challenge. And the different challenges the Kookaburra ball brings are something I feel I haven’t quite cracked. That’s something for me to keep trying to work on.”Anderson also pointed out that he and Broad were the only two members of the England squad to have been part of a Test tour of Sri Lanka and suggested, with three spinners expected to play in Galle, the workloads for seamers should mitigate against any need to rotate them during the series. He did concede, however, that one or other of them may have to accept missing out in a Test or two.”You can’t go into a game thinking the spinners are going to do everything,” he said. “When we won in India [in 2012] the seamers still had a big role. We have to use that new ball – it will swing for the first 10 overs or so – so we have to make their batsmen play as much as possible.”Stuart and I are the only ones who have made a Test tour here before. So it’s down to us to pass on as much information as we can.”In terms of selection, you have to go with the conditions. On present history, we think it’s going to spin. There will probably be some tough decisions to make. Stuart and I are well aware of that. It’s international sport and you have to take it on the chin if you’re not selected.”But we want to keep improving as a team and to win. I don’t see the workloads being too much, so we’ll try and play our strongest XI every game.”It would be huge, a really big achievement to win here.”

Liverpool may now finally sign "immense" new £50m+ player for Klopp

Liverpool have reportedly been tracking an "immense" footballer for some time, and a new update suggests that they could finally get their man soon.

Liverpool want January signings

The Reds could easily look to make new signings when the January transfer window arrives, even though Jurgen Klopp has built a fantastic squad capable of challenging across four different competitions. Perfection is often needed up against Manchester City in Premier League title races, and at the moment, Liverpool's squad has a few chinks in the armour that is just holding them back slightly.

The lack of a proper defensive midfielder like Fabinho is arguably a problem, even though Alexis Mac Allister is largely doing well enough there, and defensive depth also looks a little short, with a versatile player who can shine at both centre-back and left-back needed, especially with Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson not getting any younger.

Fluminense midfielder Andre has possibly emerged as Liverpool's most commonly linked January transfer target, but he may not be the only player that the Merseysiders look to snap up in the next window.

Goncalo Inacio transfer update

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool have been watching Sporting CP star Goncalo Inacio for over two years now and are plotting a move for the centre-back in January. The Reds are thought to be "at the front of the queue" for his services in a deal worth his £52m release clause.

Sporting CP defenderGoncalo Inacio.

"Goncalo Inacio is re-emerging as a January defender target for Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp seeks a new defensive partner for Virgil van Dijk, but the Reds will be forced to pay up, TEAMtalk has learned.

"Liverpool are keen to add another option to their defence after a summer of rebuilding their squad. Key players left and a new midfield took priority leaving manager Jurgen Klopp in need of defensive reinforcements. The club hoped to add a centre-back in summer but were unable to bring in a quality option. The signings of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch took priority."

This is hugely exciting news, with Inacio someone with so much potential as a player, but already a key man for Sporting at just 22 years of age. The Liverpool transfer target has already made 139 appearances for his current club, which is impressive for such a young footballer, and he has been hailed as "immense" for his "recovery speed" by Premier League Panel on X.

The fact that Inacio can excel in both a central and left-sided defensive role could make him the perfect option for the Reds, and while he clearly wouldn't come on the cheap, he is a player who could mature into a world-class figure in the coming years.

According to a recent update, Liverpool are leading the race to sign Inacio in a £50m+ move, suggesting that he really is seen as a primary transfer target in January, and is someone they appear to be willing to break the bank for. Klopp's midfield has had major improvements made to it, but now it appears to be time to nail other areas of the pitch.
