Contact made: Arsenal make move for £44m striker likened to Gabriel Jesus

Arsenal have reportedly made an approach to sign a club's striker likened to Gabriel Jesus, during talks for another one of their "monster" players.

Arteta's transfer plans for 2024

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu are apparently planning to shore up two main areas of the squad next year – centre-midfield and the striker area.

Thomas Partey's injury woes this season, coupled with rumours the Ghanaian could even leave in January, have apparently motivated Arsenal to look at alternative options for 2024.

Aston Villa star Dougla Luiz is attracting interest from Arteta yet again, while Brazilian midfielder Andre is also admired by Arsenal in their search for more midfield options.

"The Partey situation, in terms of having to replace him, has been in the background at Arsenal for a year now," said reporter Dean Jones to GiveMeSport recently.

"So the club definitely have targets identified at varying levels of cost that they can turn to. Andre is an interesting one here because there definitely has been attention dedicated to his situation and if he is going to make a move, it makes sense that it will be in January because of the way the calendar works in Brazilian football.

"There is the obvious link of Edu that connects Arsenal and the Brazilian, so that could prove helpful and he certainly seems more attainable than the likes of Martin Zubimendi and Douglas Luiz in the January window."

Amid Arsenal's hunt for a new midfield man, reports also suggest a new striker joining is very possible in 2024.

Brentford star Ivan Toney is repeatedly linked with a move to north London as one example, coming as Arteta has just Jesus and Eddie Nketiah to turn to as natural options right now.

Summer signing Kai Havertz was brought in as a makeshift option, but the German has come under criticism at times for not exactly firing on all cylinders.

Arsenal make approach for Matheus Reis

The north Londoners, according to a report by Calciomercato.it, are broadening their search for a new target man to outside of Europe. Indeed, it is believed Arsenal have made an approach for Matheus Reis of Fluminese, during talks over signing Andre.

The young forward, who Calciomercato.it likened to Jesus and Marcos Leonardo, has a £44 million release clause in his contract with Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City all asking for information on Reis.

The £44m figure in his exit clause is one that doesn't scare the quartet of English sides, according to this report, with the suggestion being they're all willing to pay this fee. Either way, Arsenal have been urged to sign a striker, with former defender Mikael Silvestre saying it would provide a much-needed balance. The ex-Gunner told GGRecon (via The Express):

"Right now you have Eddie Nketiah at the club alongside Gabriel Jesus, but signing a third striker could present them with a luxury that could be useful at this level, especially when you consider the amount of games that Arsenal could potentially play this season."

Mahmudullah century leaves Zimbabwe with herculean task

A maiden Test fifty from Mohammad Mithun and Mahmudullah’s first Test hundred in eight years drove Bangladesh to a dominant position, allowing them to declare their innings for a second time in the match

The Report by Liam Brickhill14-Nov-2018AFP

Bangladesh ended the fourth day in Dhaka in a strong position in their bid for a series-levelling win, reducing Zimbabwe to 76 for 2 at stumps. Mahumudullah’s first Test hundred in eight years allowed them to declare their innings for the second time in the match and set Zimbabwe a target of 443, or – more realistically – four sessions to survive. Either result seemed unlikely when the visitors lost Hamilton Masakadza and Brian Chari before the close, with Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz extracting significant turn to trouble the visiting batsmen.Faced with a Herculean task, Zimbabwe’s openers cobbled together stand that stretched to 68 as Bangladesh’s seamers created a couple of chances, but weren’t backed up in the field. Masakadza fended a rising delivery in Khaled Ahmed’s fourth over to Mehidy in the gully, but the ball was grassed and Khaled’s wait for a maiden Test wicket went on. That was Bangladesh’s ninth drop of the game (as compared to five from Zimbabwe), and the third off Khaled’s bowling. As he had done in the first innings, Chari first set down an anchor and then looked to transfer a little pressure with some calculated hitting. He brought up the fifty stand with a quick single into the covers in the 17th over of the innings, but Bangladesh’s spinners – and particularly Taijul – found enough in the surface to suggest that chances would keep coming.Mehidy was the first to strike, removing Masakadza for 25 with a regulation bat-pad catch by Mominul at short leg. Chari then missed a paddle sweep against Taijul to be lbw for 43, the Zimbabwe opener failing to get the decision overturned on review. With close-in fielders surrounding the batsmen and the light starting to fade, Taijul and Mehidy bowled in tandem, getting the ball to bite and spit at Brendan Taylor and Sean Williams. They managed to survive, but the signs for the batting team were ominous.Bangladesh had decided not to enforce the follow on this morning, and their batsmen had struggled in similar fashion against Zimbabwe’s new-ball bowlers. It took a 118-run fifth-wicket stand between Mohammad Mithun and Mahmudullah to repair the innings after they had slipped to 25 for 4, with Kyle Jarvis and Donald Tiripano picking up two early wickets apiece.Mithun’s debut had got off to a shaky start with his four-ball duck in the first innings, but in the second dig he applied himself much more effectively. His knock was not without its iffy strokes, but he put the bad ball away whenever the spinners missed their lengths.Mahmudullah played the more adventurous role early in the partnership. He had gone 10 Test innings without a fifty before this one, and finally reached the mark from 70 deliveries. Mithun had also reached his own maiden Test fifty by then, from 91 balls, and with the partnership pushed beyond 100 the time came to step on the accelerator.Mithun fell in the pursuit of quick runs, and after Ariful Haque was quickly bowled around his legs, Mahmudullah found an able partner in Mehidy, and they added a further 73 as Bangladesh’s lead ballooned. Mahmudullah continued to take on Zimbabwe’s spinners, hitting his second six off Mavuta and then slicing an uppish drive through point off the final delivery of the second session to bring up his ton. With that came the declaration. Despite a gritty opening stand from Zimbabwe, Bangladesh will go into the final day confident that they can pick up the remaining seven wickets, with Tendai Chatara’s injury making him unlikely to come out to bat. Zimbabwe, on the other hand, need a miracle.

Abbott, Morkel star in Durban Heat's first win

Albie Morkel’s 12-ball 26 on a sluggish surface helped Heat nudge ahead of the DLS par score; Abbott set it up with a four-for

The Report by Liam Brickhill21-Nov-2018AFP

AB de Villiers warned before this game that Kingsmead was the type of ground where even he never really feels in. It rang true as batsmen from both teams struggled to impose themselves in a low-scoring, rain-reduced affair. It wasn’t until Albie Morkel and Khaya Zondo came together in a rapid 40-run stand that Durban Heat found their way in pursuit of Tshwane Spartans’ 139 for 9, and when the rain came down, Durban were seven ahead of the DLS par score. This soon translated into victory. There were a couple of new faces on either side, with David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen having returned from Australia, and Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza turning up from national duty with Zimbabwe. But Morkel and Zondo aside, even the seasoned internationals – de Villiers included – were undone by a testing surface. Kyle Abbott collected 4 for 27, while Lutho Sipamla picked up 3 for 22, and might have got a couple more had the rain not brought the game to a premature end.Coming together with the chase wobbling at 83 for 4 in the 13th over, Morkel and Zondo spanked six fours and three sixes in the space of three overs to push the home side well ahead of the par score. They were so far ahead that even Sipamla’s dismissal of both men in the space of three deliveries was not enough to bring Spartans back into the match.Sipamla had also started well, his third ball bringing a wild heave across the line and a thin edge off Morne van Wyk’s bat. Van Wyk had launched Durban Heat’s chase with a flurry of boundaries, taking four fours off Williams’ second over. After he fell Heinrich Klaasen and Hashim Amla managed to tick over at just better than a run a ball. Jeevan Mendis upset the balance with the quick wickets of Klaasen and David Miller, but Spartans just didn’t have enough runs to defend.Spartans had been put in after Durban captain Morkel won the toss, and they lost three top order wickets inside the first half of an innings that never really get going amid regular wickets. Those strikes included the big one of de Villiers, who top-edged Keshav Maharaj with the breeze for the only six of the innings but then missed a reverse sweep to be pinned lbw for 10 by the same bowler. At the other end, Gihahn Cloete rattled to his second successive fifty with a selection of big drives and mis-hits in testing conditions, but Spartans could only take 39 from the Powerplay. It wasn’t until a 39-run stand between Cloete and Sikandar Raza that they were able to lay platform.Raza endured a torrid time from Marchant de Lange, the fast bowler repeatedly targeting him with short pitched deliveries as he sought ways – sometimes ungainly – to survive and turn the strike over. Cloete went to a 37-ball fifty in the 14th over, but he and Raza then fell in successive overs as Spartans faded against Durban’s pace attack.Having got past Raza and Robbie Frylinck, Abbott closed things off by dismissing Rory Kleinveldt and Sean Williams in consecutive deliveries in the final over of the innings. His late strikes stopped any thoughts of a Spartans surge, ultimately keeping them to a total that set Durban Heat a gettable target amid the rain.

£30m Chelsea star let Pochettino down alongside Gallagher

Chelsea secured a vital Premier League win against Brighton and Hove Albion over the weekend, despite going down to ten men in the first half as Conor Gallagher received two yellow cards and was sent for an early bath..

Despite playing at a disadvantage, the Blues led 3-1 heading into injury time and while there were nervy scenes after Joao Pedro scored to make it 3-2, Mauricio Pochettino’s men held on for an important three points.

On a different day, the ten men may not have held out and Gallagher was reckless for receiving a second booking and potentially letting the team down.

Conor Gallagher’s game in numbers vs Brighton

The Englishman was deployed in a number ten role just behind Nicolas Jackson and, during his spell on the pitch before receiving his marching orders, the midfielder completed 91% of his passes, succeeded with 100% of his attempted dribbles along with making two tackles.

His sending-off could have changed the course of the match, however, and it was the second Chelsea match in a row in which they have had their skipper for the day sent off after Reece James against Newcastle United.

While Gallagher failed to showcase his true talents, it was Jackson leading the line who was arguably Pochettino’s biggest disappointment, as he failed to have any real meaningful impact on the game.

Nicolas Jackson’s game in numbers vs Brighton

The striker has found the back of the net on seven occasions since joining from Villarreal for £30m in the summer, yet he hasn’t quite lived up to the hype generated upon his arrival.

Chelsea: Poch could unleash exciting Blues teen to rival Nicolas Jackson

Chelsea have a striker in their academy who scores goals for fun.

ByTom Griffin Oct 10, 2023

The attacker was tasked with leading the line against the south coast side on Sunday afternoon and while his link-up play was generally solid, he failed to provide any real contribution outside his assist for Levi Colwill’s goal.

During his 72-minute spell on the pitch, Jackson took just 31 touches of the ball and completed only eight passes, with both of these statistics dismally proving to be lower than those achieved by Robert Sanchez, indicating how isolated he was at times.

The striker contested 11 total duels, but won only three, and perhaps he is still too lightweight to cope with the Premier League at the moment, while the former La Liga gem lost possession seven times and succeeded with just one of his three attempted dribbles.

Pochettino is lacking in a top-class centre-forward and this has meant he has had to persist with utilising Jackson in that role, but the 22-year-old is taking longer to adapt to English football than first anticipated.

The more he plays, the better he will get, but Pochettino will be requiring his players to hit the ground running as they chase a European spot for the 2024/25 campaign.

The win against the Seagulls will give them plenty of confidence, especially doing so with ten men for large sections of the tie, but the Argentinian will be demanding more from players such as Jackson as the festive period begins in a couple of weeks.

If the former Villarreal starlet can grab another few goals, his confidence will surely blossom.

O elenco é bom, é o elenco líder do campeonato.

Man City eyeing £50m move to sign Riyad Mahrez replacement in January

After winning the treble last season, it was always going to be difficult for Manchester City to match such high standards for a second consecutive campaign under Pep Guardiola. That said, the Spaniard may not have expected his side to endure the difficult run that they've recently found themselves, which has included a tricky period in the Premier League.

With Liverpool, Arsenal and surprise contenders Aston Villa all vying to steal England's crown and prevent the Citizens from becoming the first side in Premier League history to win four consecutive titles, Manchester City are reportedly eyeing one particular January addition that could change their fortunes.

Man City transfer news

City were active in the summer transfer window, welcoming reinforcements in the form of Matheus Nunes, Jeremy Doku, Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic, but have since paid the price for their departures rather than reap the rewards of spending big. Without Ilkay Gundogan, Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte, Guardiola's side have struggled to get back to their blistering best of the last campaign and could now look towards January to replace one specific departure.

According to The Daily Star, Manchester City want to sign Club Brugge winger Tajon Buchanan in the January transfer window and have identified the Canada international as a replacement for Mahrez, who left in the summer. The deal won't be cheap, however, with Buchanan reportedly valued at £50m by Club Brugge ahead of the winter window.

Man City close to losing "excellent" player with talks advanced

A move is progressing.

ByTom Cunningham Dec 8, 2023

Guardiola is reportedly desperate to reinforce his right-hand side, having played both Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva in the role this season instead of welcoming a direct Mahrez replacement in the summer. When January arrives, Buchanan could solve the manager's problem to boost City's title chances once again.

Buchanan can match Doku's Man City rise

Buchanan and Doku are easy to compare prior to the latter's move to Manchester City in the summer. Doku's stats before life at The Etihad didn't make for brilliant reading, with just 12 goals and 10 assists in 92 appearances for Stade Rennais highlighting his struggle for end product. Since making the move to City, however, Doku has already been involved in nine goals in all competitions. In similar fashion to the City winger's Rennes days, Buchanan's stats show that he hasn't been involved in an incredible number of goals at Club Brugge this season, with four involvements in the Belgium Pro League.

Buchanan for Club Brugge

Buchanan has already earned plenty of praise throughout his career too, including from former coach Bruce Arena, who told The Athletic:

"Although theoretically he was positioned as a right back he wasn’t really playing right back in those games. He’s more I would say a midfielder because he was attacking up the field. Tajon has qualities to play in a variety of positions out wide. You saw the other night with Canada he played probably as a second forward, attacking midfielder. He’s a player with a lot of qualities, both attacking and defending, and it certainly spells for a great future for the player.”

IPL calendar puts Zimbabwe's India tour in doubt

While no dates had been settled upon, the tour was expected to take place in March. However, there is a only a ten-day window between the Australia series and the IPL

Liam Brickhill13-Jan-2019

AFP

The announcement of the dates for this year’s IPL has put Zimbabwe’s tour of India in March in doubt, and the visit may be restructured, postponed or even cancelled entirely. While no dates had been settled upon for Zimbabwe’s visit, the tour was scheduled to take place at some point in March, and include a Test and three one-day internationals. However, India’s tour of Australia and New Zealand concludes on 10 February, after which Australia’s trip to India for two T20Is and five ODIs runs from 24 February to 13 March. With this year’s IPL due to start on March 23, that leaves only 10 days to squeeze Zimbabwe in.ESPNcricinfo understands that Zimbabwe Cricket managing director Givemore Makoni will meet with his counterparts at the BCCI this week to discuss the tour, with the possibility that it could be restructured to include only ODIs and T20Is, or to agree on a possible postponement. The ODIs against Zimbabwe had been tabled as part of India’s preparation for the World Cup in England. Zimbabwe visited India for the World T20 in 2016, the World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2006, but their trip penciled in for March would have been their first for a bilateral series since 2002.
