Edu could make January move for club’s high earner who really likes Arsenal

Arsenal, and sporting director Edu by extension, could move for a club's star in January – with there being a belief he likes the idea of joining.

Arsenal sliding down Premier League table

The Gunners have endured a torrid time of late, winning just once in their last five Premier League games and now five points off table-toppers Liverpool.

Arsenal express interest over move to sign "brutal" star ahead of Man City

This would be some statement from the Gunners…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 4, 2024

After the club spent over £200 million last summer, in an effort to help them clinch their first league title in 20 years, manager Mikel Arteta is under pressure to turn things around and quickly.

Arsenal luckily have 15 days till their next top flight encounter, a home clash against struggling Crystal Palace on January 20, which gives club transfer chiefs time to potentially bolster Arteta's ranks.

The north Londoners have been linked with signing a new striker, midfielder and full-backs this month. They were however dealt a major blow in their pursuit of top target Ivan Toney, with Brentford boss Thomas Frank confirming he is set to remain at the club this month.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

"He is a Brentford player. He is here, we miss a few offensive players and I cannot see why we should sell him. I would love to have him here for a long time," said Frank on Toney's future at Brentford.

"It is not for me to discuss (an offer), but if I could ever recommend one, it would need to be an unbelievable price, so he will stay here."

FFP restrictions have also given Arsenal a pretty tight January budget to work with, according to reports (Miguel Delaney), so Edu and co may have to be clever and make the most ideal signings possible.

One player who could fall into that bracket is Crystal Palace star Michael Olise. Since returning from injury, the Englishman has gone on to enjoy one of the best seasons of his career to date, scoring five goals and registering an assist in just nine league appearances.

Arsenal were linked with a summer move for Olise, and now it appears they could reignite that interest mid-season.

Olise prefers to join Arsenal

According to Football Transfers, Arsenal could potentially make a January move for Olise and it is believed the £100,000-per-week midfielder would "very much prefer" to join them over Man United.

While a summer move is seen as more likely as things stand, the report claims a January deal is still possible if Arsenal make significant sales first.

Eagles boss Roy Hodgson certainly hopes that won't be the case. The former England boss is a big fan of Olise, as is Arteta apparently, with Hodgson calling Olise an "enormous talent".

"What I make of him is that I think he is an enormous talent," said Hodgson.

"He has got a great possibility to have a wonderful career and a wonderful future. We can only hope we at Crystal Palace can give him that platform.”

BCCI ombudsman summons Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul

Hearings to take place on April 9 and 10 in the matter related to the pair’s controversial comments on a TV chat show

Justice DK Jain, the BCCI ombudsman, has issued notices to the pair of Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul, asking them to be present for hearings in the controversy related to their remarks on an Indian TV chat show recently. The hearings will take place in Mumbai, with Pandya’s scheduled on April 9 and Rahul’s the next day. This is the first issue Justice Jain, who was appointed by the Supreme Court in February, will adjudicate on.Justice Jain told ESPNcricinfo that as part of the process of natural justice, he had to hear both players before adjudicating on the matter.Asked whether the players had confirmed their attendance, Justice Jain said that was not needed, but it was important for him to listen to what they had to say. “I have sent them the notice. It is for them to appear or not,” he said. “It is part of natural justice. You cannot hold someone guilty without having given them the opportunity to present their case.”The timing of the hearings is a concern for the IPL franchises of the two players – Mumbai Indians (Pandya) and Kings XI Punjab (Rahul). Incidentally, Mumbai will host Kings XI in an evening match on April 10, so it remains to be seen whether Rahul will feature in that game.Justice Jain said there was no deadline given to him by the BCCI to take a final decision. However, both the Indian team management as well the national selectors would want clarity keeping in mind the World Cup, the squad for which will be picked around April 25 with the tournament starting on May 30.Both Pandya and Rahul had been suspended by the BCCI’s Committee of Administrators in January over their offensive remarks on the television show ‘Koffee with Karan’, which was aired on January 9. The two players, who were in Australia at the time, were called back home and suspended two days later. Subsequently, on January 24, the suspension was provisionally lifted pending an inquiry.

– Acreditamos nesse trabalho conjunto do Roger e do Marcão vai manter a regularidade e esse trabalho digno no futebol do Fluminense – completou.

Kyle Jarvis, Timycen Maruma star as Zimbabwe wrap up 4-0 whitewash

Zimbabwe chased a revised target after a two-hour rain delay and clinched a three-wicket win via the DLS method

The Report by Peter Della Penna16-Apr-2019

Sean Williams plays into the leg side•AFP

An all-round team performance ensured Zimbabwe clinched a three-wicket win via the DLS Method to close out a 4-0 series whitewash.Choosing to bat first, UAE were well placed at 91 for 2 in the 25th over with Chirag Suri on 46, but the former Gujarat Lions squad member fell leg before to Sikandar Raza for 46 and the rest of the UAE line-up struggled to capitalise on the platform he had built.Kyle Jarvis had been productive with the new ball through the first three matches and on this occasion he chipped in with a crucial double-strike in the 37th over. Ex-captain and opening batsman Rohan Mustafa was bumped down the order to make room for Suri and help insulate a weak tail. While Suri benefited from the move, Mustafa’s form drought in Zimbabwe continued when Jarvis nabbed him for just 1, ending his series with 20 runs in four innings. Jarvis struck next ball to claim Imran Haider edging behind for a golden duck to make it 139 for 7.CP Rizwan had been at the other end with Suri during a 38-run third-wicket stand, but could not find a reliable partner while trying to stretch out the innings. He made 45 at No. 4 before he was last man out in the 48th over, run out by Raza who denied him a second run with a direct hit from the third man boundary as UAE ended on 175.Zimbabwe were cruising at 37 for 0 in the seventh over of the chase when rain interrupted play for two hours, resulting in a revised target of 128 off 30 overs. Captain Mohammad Naveed dismissed both openers in his first two overs after play resumed, including Regis Chakabva for 28 to make it 49 for 2.Another flurry of three wickets in four balls fell across the 17th and 18th overs as Zahoor Khan had Craig Ervine edging behind before Mustafa bowled Sean Williams and Peter Moor to give Zimbabwe a brief scare at 79 for 5. It could have been 80 for 6 had Naveed held onto a chance in the 19th off Zahoor when Timycen Maruma was on 0, but the captain grassed the chance running back from mid-off. Maruma compounded the error clubbing two fours and a six off Mustafa in the 20th, bringing the equation down to a very manageable 31 off 62 balls.Maruma hit another four and six off Haider’s legspin in the 21st before Shaiman Anwar claimed him with his part-time spin in the 23rd for a top score of 35 off 22 balls. Zimbabwe needed just 10 off the last seven overs, and despite a runout to start the 25th, which resulted in Ryan Burn walking off for 1, Jarvis and Raza struck a pair of boundaries off Shaiman to clinch victory with 31 balls to spare.

Man Utd now trying to force their "phenomenal" talent to join Everton

Everton are in the mix to sign a "phenomenal" Premier League talent in the January transfer window, with Man Utd now preferring that their youngster join the Blues on loan rather than head abroad.

Everton transfer news

The Blues are yet to do any incoming business so far this month, but there is still plenty of time for that to change, should the right targets emerge in that time. Manchester United midfielder Hannibal Mejbri is one player who has emerged as a transfer target for Everton in recent times, with the youngster looking likely to either move to Goodison Park or Sevilla on loan in January.

Meanwhile, Brentford ace Frank Onyeka has been backed to join the Merseysiders, and a move for West Brom youngster Tom Fellows has also been mooted.

It is unquestionably an important month for Everton, as they look to ensure that they don't get dragged into yet another Premier League relegation fight – the 10-point deduction is the main reason for that – and Sean Dyche certainly won't turn his nose up at the idea of new faces coming in.

Hannibal Mejbri to Everton update

According to journalist Alonso Rivero on X, Manchester United would like Hannibal to join Everton on loan, with the Blues still very much in the race to sign him.

Hannibal Mejbri

"Manchester United continues to pressure Hannibal Mejbri to go to Everton. Sevilla is optimistic and that the player's will will prevail. Everything will be resolved next week."

Hannibal is someone who ticks so many boxes when it comes to being a strong loan signing by Everton, not least because he will be desperate to prove to Erik ten Hag that he is worth persevering with moving forward.

Playing time has understandably been limited for the Tunisian this season, given his lack of experience, but he is a tenacious figure who could be popular among Blues fans, having been lauded by former John Eustace in the past, who managed him at Birmingham City:

"The way he has played in the last couple of games has been phenomenal. He has broken records for total distance [covered], all that kind of stuff. It was important we also used the squad. [Juninho] Bacuna came in today and did well and Hanni came on for that last half hour and was very good. I have said it is a squad game, everyone will be used, we are certainly stretched at the moment but it's important everyone gets that opportunity to play and feel wanted."

Everton now interested in signing "great" £20m+ AFCON star in January

The Toffees could land a crucial reinforcement once he returns from international duty.

ByTom Cunningham Jan 11, 2024

Hannibal has not played enough football to justify going straight into Everton's starting lineup as a regular – he has 13 first-team appearances to his name for United – but he could bring a good balance in the middle of the park for Dyche, not only being a relentless presser and tackler but someone who uses the ball intelligently, too.

Derby County can fix John-Jules injury woes with ‘game-changing’ transfer

Derby County will have been relieved to finally come out the other side of a blip in form last match, scraping past a dogged Cheltenham Town side 2-1 courtesy of a late James Collins goal.

This was a crucial victory for Paul Warne's men to get on the board in their continued aspirations to break into the automatic promotion spots come the end of the campaign, the ambitious Rams now just three points off Portsmouth at the top of League One.

Regardless of getting back on track in the league this weekend with a win, Derby will still want to bolster up top especially with a worrying injury development coming out of Pride Park weakening Warne's men going forward.

Derby going after former League One promotion winner

With young Arsenal recruit Tyreece John-Jules potentially needing surgery after picking up an untimely hamstring injury versus Lincoln City recently – Warne even commenting that the injury blow has 'destroyed' the up-and-coming striker – the Rams are now arguably light on numbers in the striker positions.

Showing flickers of his immense quality with two strikes registered in a Derby strip, which has seen the 22-year-old striker score goals for fun at U23 level back in north London, this is a disorientating blow at Pride Park that will hopefully be swiftly put to one side by the third tier outfit swooping back in for long-term target Michael Smith.

With the stumbling block between Sheffield Wednesday and Derby seemingly centring on the nature of the deal – the Rams only wanting Smith to come in and be a short-term hero on loan – this is a move that could well be finally completed on deadline day or agonisingly falls through at the death.

If the first option comes to fruition, the current Owls man could add another promotion to the Championship onto his resume at Derby with the 32-year-old attacker a lethal finisher at the level.

January transfer window: All the deadline day deals from England and Scotland

Stay on top of all the latest transfer deals across the Premier League, EFL and SPFL as the January window closes.

ByCharlie Smith Feb 1, 2024 How Smith slots into the Derby team

Warne would have to slightly tweak with his formation if Smith was to finally arrive on the scene, with John-Jules operating more as a second striker compared to Smith's prowess as an out-and-out centre-forward.

Derby won't complain about having to make a slight change, however, with Smith and James Collins potentially forming a terrifying strike partnership to fire the Rams to promotion.

Scoring 75 times in League One across his esteemed career to date, Collins equally as potent with 69 strikes next to his name, the current Owls man could more than make up for the loss of the injury-stricken John-Jules by making goalscoring look effortless again on his return to the division.

Once described as a "game-changer" style figure by ex-Wednesday boss Darren Moore, a successful deal for Smith this window could really give the Rams an edge in the ongoing promotion fight at the top of League One.

A star previously in the third tier under current Derby manager Warne when the pair were both at Rotherham United, the 32-year-old bagging 33 goals along the way to two promotions with the Millers, this match made in heaven could prove to be fruitful again as Derby prepare to do everything in their power to try and break out of League One.

Rodrigues 77*, Velocity and Supernovas in final

Velocity fell short of Supernovas 142 by 12 runs, but the result ensured both sides had a better net run rate than Trailblazers

The Report by Ankur Dhawan09-May-2019

Jemimah Rodrigues drives through the off side•BCCI

A picture perfect 48-ball 77 not out from Jemimah Rodrigues took Supernovas to 142 for 3 and consigned Velocity to a 12-run defeat, setting up a rematch between the two sides in the final. Though all three teams finished with a win each, Trailblazers, who had come to the stadium to watch proceedings, were knocked out due to a poorer net run-rate.Jemimah Rodrigues on her unbeaten 77:

“This was one of my best knocks and one of the memorable ones because today the wicket actually wasn’t easy to bat on. But, as I said, [WV] Raman sir [the India women head coach] just told me, “With the class of batting you have, don’t try to hit the ball too hard, just hit it through the line and focus on impact of the ball.” And that’s what I was focussing on, and kept things simple actually.
I just reacted to the ball. And yeah, obviously, the [7,000 strong] crowd over here [at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, in Jaipur] was really amazing. You get really pumped – even if you hit one boundary you get pumped by the cheering. I really loved playing in Jaipur and the crowd has been very supportive.”

Chasing 143, Velocity knew that getting to 117 would ensure that they got through along with Supernovas, even if they ended up losing this game. They briefly threatened going for the win, with Danielle Wyatt going great guns, but after Poonam Yadav ended her cameo on 43, they shut shop and crawled past the qualification target of 117 in the 19th over, with Mithali Raj finding the extra cover boundary off her counterpart Harmanpreet Kaur. Raj remained unbeaten on 40 off 42, and steered her team to safety in the company of Veda Krishnamurthy, who was unbeaten on a 29-ball 30.The star of the match, however, was Rodrigues. She came in when opener Priya Punia fell in the fifth over and batted through to the end. She was ably supported by Chamari Atapattu, who struggled for timing and rode her luck, but hung around to forge a 55-run second wicket stand at seven runs per over. That partnership set the foundation for a respectable total, which was put beyond Velocity’s reach by legspinner Poonam’s middle overs squeeze.Jemimah Rodrigues’ masterclassFirst ball at the crease, she leaned into it and caressed it through extra cover. You would have thought that’d be the shot of the match. But she accumulated an assortment of boundaries, each seemingly better than the last, through the course of her knock. Her second boundary, for instance, was the perfect illustration of a straight drive. At other times, particularly against spin, Rodrigues toyed with the bowling. She came down the wicket and went inside out or over the bowler’s head, and when the bowlers shorted their length, she used the depth of the crease and the late cut to great effect. And even when the ball was fired into the pads, she wasn’t to be tied down, as she swept, both to the short fine-leg’s right and left. Finding back to back boundaries was another feature of her innings; she did that thrice, in the sixth, 14th and 15th overs.Shoddy fielding costs VelocityPoor fielding reared it’s ugly head in Jaipur again as Velocity dropped as many as five chances, arguably costing them the match. Atapattu was the first beneficiary, put down by Wyatt diving to her right at midwicket. A sharp chance, but not impossible by any stretch. The left-hander was on four at the time but she was offered another life on 10, this time by Raj, who circled around a steepler at mid-off, before grassing it. Rodrigues was largely flawless in her strokeplay but there was a period of play when she seemed to lose her concentration. She miscued a slog sweep off Amelia Kerr, which was put down at deep square leg, and the next ball, deceived in the flight, she was coaxed out of her crease but wicketkeeper Sushma Verma failed to collect it cleanly due to the extra bounce. Rodrigues was on 52 at the time and added another 25 runs. Sophie Devine was also given a life at long-off but that didn’t prove as costly.Poonam Yadav’s middle overs squeezeWhen she was brought into the attack, Velocity were undoubtedly going for the win, with Wyatt finding the boundary with great regularity and Raj rotating the strike nicely. The required run-rate was under seven when she came on in the 10th over. She bowled a tight first over which went for just one. On the third ball of her second over, after a misfield brought Wyatt back on strike, she tossed one up on middle stump and went through Wyatt, who had swung way too early. Poonam conceded just 13 in her four overs, choked the scoring with 12 dot balls, and by the time she finished her spell, the required run-rate had shot up to 15.50.
