Heading into Saturday's games, Leeds United found themselves in third place in the Championship and just a point off the automatic promotion places, albeit having played a game more than Southampton in second and Ipswich directly below.
Crucially, the Whites were able to open up a huge 16-point cushion to seventh prior to the visit of Rotherham United, which means they're all but set for a play-off spot at the very least, barring a spectacular collapse in the run-in.
Championship Table: Latest standings for the 2024/25 season
Latest English Football League Championship standings 2024/25.
ByStephan Georgiou Apr 22, 2025
Daniel Farke's side are currently enjoying a five-game winning run – the longest in the division – picking up at least five more points than anybody else in the same period. It's a streak that's truly been built on a rock-solid defensive record, with Leeds conceding just one goal across all of those matches.
Key to those efforts has been on-loan Spurs centre-back Joe Rodon, who's become a permanent target for the Whites. It was reported last month that they have begun working on a deal to sign him long-term and wanted an agreement in place as soon as possible to avoid his price skyrocketing, amid suggestions that Spurs could demand £20m if he continues to excel.
Leeds know what's required to sign Rodon
Football Insider has now shared a fresh Joe Rodon to Leeds update, and it makes for slightly worrying reading. A deal is apparently "unlikely" unless Leeds get promoted this season, and they know better than most just how unpredictable the play-offs can be.
Because there's no option to buy in his loan agreement, Leeds will have to open fresh negotiations with Spurs, but Rodon is expected to attract "lots of interest" after his performances in the second tier. Premier League clubs could be among the suitors, and that's partly why promotion may be a "deciding factor".
Rodon is the second-most impactful player in the league
The Welshman's value is abundantly clear at this point. He's started 26 of the 27 league games for which he's been available, and he ranks fifth in the squad for minutes played (2,282).
Joe Rodon passes the ball for Leeds United against Leicester City.
Rodon's stats show he's been doing it all at the back, ranking inside the league's top 10 for clearances (122) and pass completion (90.8%), as well as boasting the third-best challenge success rate (78.9%). Leeds 'beat' their opponent's xG by an average margin of 1.12 per 90 minutes with Rodon on the pitch, which technically makes him the second-most impactful player in the division.

Luis Sinisterra has just sealed a permanent transfer in the opposite direction.
ByDavid Comerford Feb 9, 2024
Rodon was voted as Leeds' player of the month for December ahead of Crysencio Summerville, Dan James and Pascal Struijk, so he's clearly one of the fan favourites at Elland Road. The Leeds faithful will surely be desperate to see him donning their white shirt for years to come.

Dube and Axar struck 121 runs in a 67-ball seventh-wicket partnership while Yuzvendra Chahal took a five-wicket haul

Reeza Hendricks’ 110 was not good enough for South Africa A as India A trumped the visitors in the first one-dayer by 69 runs. Allrounders Shivam Dube and Axar Patel struck quickfire fifties to rescue the hosts from a perilous position, after which their spinners – especially Yuzvendra Chahal, who took a five-wicket haul – dismantled South Africa A.Sent in to bat, India A were in trouble when they lost their fifth wicket for 169 runs in the 28th over. The set duo of Manish Pandey and Ishan Kishan had fallen in the space of three deliveries and Krunal Pandya was to fall soon after. That’s when No. 8 Axar joined No. 7 Dube, and the duo finished with nine fours and nine sixes between them, batting through the next 11.1 overs. In that period, they smashed 121 runs, especially severe on left-arm spinner George Linde who bowled his five overs at an economy of 9.80.At the break, India A walked back for 327 for 6 in 47 overs, but the picture could’ve been much different had the seventh-wicket partnership not taken place. Each of their first six batsmen earned starts but failed to capitalise on them. Opener Shubman Gill fell four short of a half-century while Pandey and Kishan succumbed in their thirties. Rituraj Gaikwad made 10, Anmolpreet Singh made 29 while Krunal made a 25-ball 14.In their chase, South Africa A were rocked by Janneman Malan’s dismissal in the eighth over, out caught-behind off Chahal. Chahal soon removed Matthew Breetzke too, and when the South Africa A captain Temba Bavuma fell for eight, they were reeling at 81 for 3. The other opener Hendricks, though, went on to notch two useful partnerships with Khaya Zondo (30) and Heinrich Klaasen (58) and earn his 13th List-A hundred, giving South Africa A a window of opportunity. But pinpoint bowling from the India A spinners, who bowled 27 of the 45 overs, helped the hosts control the game. And when South Africa A went for the late charge, they cashed in, with Axar collecting two wickets and Chahal a further three. For his allround contributions, Axar was named Player of the Match. The second of five one-dayers will be played on August 31.

As Jurgen Klopp leaves Liverpool at the end of the season to commence a new era at Anfield, veteran defender Joel Matip will also follow the German out of the door with his contract set to expire. Well aware of the centre-back's pending exit, the Reds have already begun their search for a replacement and could now look closer to home rather than long-term target Goncalo Inacio.
Liverpool transfer news
Liverpool's interest in Inacio is hardly a secret these days, given that reports have been linking the Premier League giants with a move for the Sporting Club defender since last summer. Now, according to Anfield Watch via TeamTalk, Liverpool have made contact with Inacio's agent over a potential move in the coming months in a deal that would trigger the centre-back's £52m release clause.

The Reds aren't the only club interested, however, with reports indicating that Newcastle United and Arsenal are also big admirers of Inacio ahead of the summer transfer window. For now, it seems as though Liverpool have jumped ahead of their Premier League rivals in pursuit of their target, but that's not to say that they haven't thought of a back-up option.
In what would be one of the most surprising deals of the summer, Liverpool are eyeing a move for Jarrad Branthwaite as an Inacio alternative this summer, according to TeamTalk. The Everton defender is attracting plenty of interest, including reportedly from Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur, and could leave Goodison Park for as much as £75m this summer.
Of course, it is worth considering that Everton's price-tag may rise if it is Liverpool who make an approach due to their local rivalry. But, that said, the defender wouldn't be the first to make the move across Merseyside.

"Outstanding" Branthwaite has outperformed Inacio this season

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is certainly a fan too, telling Sky Sports: “I think he is [special]. And what is really special as well is the amount of centre-backs we have in the Premier League aged 21 or younger.
"Branthwaite has been outstanding, Murillo I think has been outstanding. But I think this lad has been pretty special and he’s a big part of why in my eyes Everton still have a great chance of staying up, him and his partnership with Tarkowski.”

Tottenham Hotspur made it back-to-back victories in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, avenging their November home defeat against Aston Villa with a sweeping win at Villa Park.
Spurs were aided by John McGinn's red card in the second half but the visitors had already soaked up the stadium's initially defeating atmosphere early and struck twice after the break
Unai Emery's Villans prodded for a route back into the contest but Tottenham controlled and commanded, with late strikes from Heung-min Son and substitute Timo Werner sealing an emphatic 4-0 victory to put hopes of returning to the top four in their own hands.
There were many impressive displays from Ange Postecoglou's side, with young midfielder Pape Matar Sarr proving his worth after being benched last weekend.
Pape Matar Sarr's performance vs Aston Villa
The game was level and, numerically, so were the teams. It was just five minutes after the interval following a first phase that just hadn't shifted into top, thrilling gear.
Tottenham players celebrating
Sarr collected Kulusevski's pass and considered it a personal duty to make something happen, gliding up the right channel and whipping in a delightful cross, threaded right into the path of the surging James Maddison in the box.
The 21-year-old was withdrawn after 70 minutes with Tottenham 2-0 up, but after entering after the break against Crystal Palace, it's pretty clear that the Senegal international needs to start all of the biggest occasions henceforth.

Writing in his post-match player ratings, football.london's Alasdair Gold handed Sarr a healthy 8/10 score, saying: 'Picked up an unfortunate yellow card in the first half after slipping into Tielemans and took a big whack that saw him limp off at the break. He was excellent though after the interval and it was his drive and pinpoint cross that served up Maddison's opener.'
While many impressed, Sarr's energy and confidence emanates throughout the Spurs squad and he simply has to start if Tottenham are to achieve their goals over the next few months.
Not the only player to have caught the eye though, another fine display from Brennan Johnson surely now confirms that the Welshman must keep his starting berth going forward.
Why Brennan Johnson is now undroppable
Tottenham signed Johnson from Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest for £47.5m last summer and he has impressed so far, racking up two assists off the bench against Crystal Palace and now firing his team into a 2-0 lead at Villa Park, moments after Maddison's opener.
As per Sofascore, the 22-year-old, who has been hailed for his "frightening pace" by content creator HLTCO, complemented his goal with success in four of his seven attempted dribbles, also chipping in with two tackles and winning seven of his 14 contested ground duels.
Moreover, Johnson has taken his Premier League tally for the Lilywhites up to four goals and six assists from just 21 appearances, including 14 starts, and while Werner scored for the second game running in the dying embers, off the bench, it's pretty clear that Johnson's starting to bloom and must be handed opportunities from the outset.
Gold also deemed Johnson deserving of an 8/10 match rating, writing: 'Bright from the start of the match, gave Villa plenty of problems with his pressing, dribbling and runs and he showed he's not just a super sub with a curling finish on the slide to double Tottenham's lead.'
Brennan Johnson in action for Tottenham.
Tottenham have so many options and it really is quite remarkable how Postecoglou is placing the framework of success at the club after such a torrid 2022/23 campaign, and with the likes of Sarr and Johnson rising to the fore, lofty ambitions might just be realised.
After Glamorgan had gained maximum batting points and were dismissed for 435, the visitors suffered a collapse

Leicestershire 191 for 9 (Smith 3-26, Patel 3-44) trail Glamorgan 435 (Cooke 96, Lloyd 66, Patel 66, Wright 5-64) by 244 runsGlamorgan gave their slim chances of promotion a considerable boost on the second day of their Specsavers County Championship Division Two clash against Leicestershire at Sophia Gardens, as they left the visitors on the brink of following on at 191 for 9, unless the Welsh county decide to bat. After Glamorgan had gained maximum batting points from the penultimate ball of the 110th over, and were dismissed for 435, the visitors suffered an astonishing collapse following an opening partnership of 85 between captain Paul Horton and Hassan Azad. From 85 for no wicket, they collapsed to 87 for 5, with the five wickets falling for two runs in 5.5 overs. After Michael Hogan had bowled Horton, who struck a fluent 49, the collapse set in with Samit Patel, in his third game on loan from Nottinghamshire, taking the next three wickets.Patel struck twice in an over to dismiss Colin Ackermann leg-before and former Glamorgan left-hander Mark Cosgrove, bowled for nought.Ruaidhri Smith then struck with the final ball of his first over, which kept low as George Rhodes was bowled without scoring, before Billy Root took a close catch in Patel’s next over to remove Azad for 28.Andrew Salter trapped Harry Dearden in front for nine in the final over before tea, with the visitors struggling at 111 for 6.Their troubles deepened in the final session, when Harry Swindells was caught behind down the leg-side off Hogan, after he offered some gentle resistance alongside Ben Mike, who was eventually lbw to Ruaidhri Smith for 16.Smith struck in the same way to dismiss Gavin Griffiths for three, as Glamorgan claimed their ninth wicket and maximum bowling points.Earlier, resuming on 300 for 4, Glamorgan had added a further 135 to their overnight score, with six partnerships in excess of fifty. Attacking from the outset, Root was caught at slip, ending a 77-run partnership after Chris Cooke had struck a six off Will Davis who, two overs later, trapped Graham Wagg lbw for three.Cooke brought up just his second half-century of the season from 49 balls, and claimed Glamorgan’s fourth batting point with a flick to the fine-leg boundary. He later brought up the fifth and final point with a six over mid-wicket.Salter was then caught behind for 21, before Cooke fell agonisingly short of a century when he was bowled for 96, attempting to drive Chris Wright into the leg-side.Smith was bowled by Wright for 12 and the innings was wrapped up as Lukas Carey was caught at point as the bowler claimed his fifth wicket.
