Club chiefs think unseen Tottenham teenager is a star in the making

Tottenham Hotspur chiefs are under the impression an unseen teenager of theirs is a "star in the making".

Postecoglou wants Spurs academy improvement

The N17 academy has birthed some noteworthy talents in recent seasons. The likes of Troy Parrott, Dane Scarlett, Oliver Skipp and Jamie Donley stand out as just a few examples from the past two-three years, with the latter being handed his senior debut by Ange Postecoglou earlier this season.

Parrott is currently enjoying a productive loan spell at Excelsior in the Netherlands, while Skipp is sometimes called upon by Postecoglou as a solid back-up option for his Spurs matchday squad.

Scarlett has drawn comparisons with Man United star Marcus Rashford in past seasons as well, but Postecoglou has stated that Spurs' academy could still improve despite the production of some fine talent.

"We've still got a lot of work to do at academy level," said Postecoglou earlier this season. "We've got a great man there in Simon [Davies] who has worked at some of best academies going and he knows what’s needed. We've got some good coaches in there now. This year has been better but in terms of a production line of young players I think we’re still well behind other clubs.

"There was already a process in place before I came in and yeah like I said, some of it is around the methodology we use, but also a little bit of opportunity. I guess if young players don't feel there is an opportunity here maybe we don't get the best ones or maybe we don't provide the opportunities for the best ones, so my role in that is to make sure the good ones we have do get an opportunity.

"And secondly, other young good young players around the country, not just around the world, see this as a club where if you are talented, you will get an opportunity."

Spurs are making an effort to bring in some of Europe's most bright talents from elsewhere as well, with the club beating Barcelona to Djurgardens IF sensation Lucas Bergvall in the January window.

A highly-rated talent currently at N17, though, is young midfielder Callum Olusesi. Spurs recently agreed a new deal for Olusesi, as reported by Fabrizio Romano, with fellow journalist Pete O'Rourke now detailing how Spurs feel about the teenager.

Tottenham think Olusesi is a "star in the making"

Indeed, according to O'Rourke, writing for Football Insider, Tottenham chiefs think Olusesi is a "star in the making".

Spurs fended off interest from Man United to keep their talented youngster, and it is believed those within the club think he's going to be world-class. Olusesi, who's scored six goals and assisted four others in the Under-18 Premier League this season, also boasts seven England Under-17 caps.

Full player list revealed for The Hundred draft

Only 19 of more than 300 domestic players in the draft have stipulated a reserve price

English players have been conservative in their salary demands ahead of Sunday’s inaugural draft for The Hundred, with only 19 of the 331 domestic players choosing to put down a reserve price. While many of the big overseas names in the draft have opted for a base price of £100,000 or more, meaning they will have to be picked in the first four rounds if at all, only four English players – Joe Denly, Liam Livingstone, Samit Patel and Mark Wood – have dared to enter with a reserve price as high as £60,000.Seven players – Ian Bell, Sam Billings, Morne Morkel, Liam Plunkett, Delray Rawlins, Olly Stone and Ryan ten Doeschate – have entered with a reserve price of £50,000.Eight more – Kyle Abbott, Daniel Bell-Drummond, Gareth Harte, Richard Levi, Wayne Madsen, Hamidullah Qadri, Rilee Rossouw and Hardus Viljoen – have a reserve price of £40,000, while the rest have none, meaning they could go for as little as £30,000.The vast majority of players with a county deal have put their names forward, meaning there are few notable omissions – though some red-ball specialists like Alastair Cook, Rob Yates and Nick Browne have not entered. Those without a base price that can hope to be picked up relatively early in the draft include Ravi Bopara, Liam Dawson, Cameron Delport, Lewis Gregory, Tymal Mills and Reece Topley, while the overwhelming majority of recent stars in the T20 Blast are on the full list.Several players without a county contract have entered, including recent pros Mohammad Azharullah, Richard Oliver, and Azeem Rafiq. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, the overseas player list includes global T20 stars including Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and Glenn Maxwell, though AB de Villiers has not registered for the competition.Harbhajan Singh was the only Indian to have initially entered the draft, but had a change of mind and wanted to focus on playing in the IPL. The BCCI made it clear to him that unless he was retired he could not be permitted to play overseas T20 leagues. Some players have moved their reserve prices since ESPNcricinfo revealed an earlier version of the overseas player list. Lungi Ngidi has removed his initial reserve price of £125,000, while Shahid Afridi has changed his down from £100,000 to £60,000.Several more overseas players have registered since then, including Mohammad Amir, Hazratullah Zazai, Umar Akmal and Avishka Fernando. In total, there are now 239 overseas players registered for the draft.

Arsenal plotting to hijack £205,000-a-week Barcelona target this summer

Arsenal are hoping to hijack a move for a big Barcelona target in the summer transfer window, as Edu looks to work his magic in the market once again.

Arsenal transfer news

The Gunners will be buoyant after earning an impressive 0-0 draw away to Manchester City on Sunday, keeping them right in the hunt for the Premier League title. Regardless of what happens in the coming weeks, however, it is clear that further signings will be needed in the summer, in order for Mikel Arteta's side to find yet another gear in 2024/25.

Long-term planning is essential at the Emirates, rather than gradually allowing the squad to age together, and teenage prospect Joachim Kayi Sanda has been linked with a move to north London. The France Under-18 international is also believed to be wanted by Manchester United.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

The two Premier League rivals are reportedly locking horns for the signing of Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, too, with the attacking ace enjoying a fantastic season for the Portuguese giants, scoring 22 goals and registering 10 assists in the Primeira Liga. Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz both offer plenty leading the line, but the Swede could be considered a more regular supplier of end product.

Then there's Athletic Bilbao youngster Nico Williams, who is seen as someone who could provide excellent competition for Bukayo Saka out on the right wing. At 21, he is a long-term prospect but also a player capable of being an instant hit, having already made 114 appearances for his club side and also won 13 caps for Spain.

Arsenal looking to hijack move for Barcelona target

According to a new update from Sport [via Sport Witness], Arsenal remain keen on signing Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo, as Edu looks to snap him up from under the noses of Barcelona. That being said, the Portuguese is believed to be swaying towards the idea of staying put at the Camp Nou, having joined them on loan from City last summer, and would reject a move back to England if Barca come to terms with City.

The £205,000-a-week-earning Cancelo remains a strong option for Arsenal, having proven himself as arguably one of Europe's leading full-backs in recent years, winning three Premier League titles and one Champions League crown with City. Granted, his time at the Etihad has become more strained, hence Pep Guardiola being willing to send him out on loan, but the Spaniard has also lauded him in the past.

Arsenal ace was just as good as William Saliba against Man City

Arsenal picked up a respectable 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon.

ByTom Lever Mar 31, 2024

Cancelo does admittedly turn 30 in May, so he may only be a relatively short-term option for Arsenal, but his vast experience and winning mentality could add another edge to Arteta's squad, and his ability to play at right-back, left-back or even in midfield would add so much versatility.

Jofra Archer draws line under racist incident as thoughts turn to Hamilton

Fast bowler described abuse as ‘a real shame’ in his newspaper column

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Nov-2019

It was a frustrating day for Jofra Archer•Getty Images

Jofra Archer has declared that he is “over” the incident of racial abuse that marred the closing stages of last week’s first Test against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui, as England’s thoughts turn towards the challenge of squaring the series in the second Test at Hamilton, which begins on Friday morning. However, writing in his column in the Daily Mail, Archer described the incident as a “real shame”, and made it clear that there is no place for racist abuse “in any walk of life, let alone cricket”.The incident occurred towards the end of England’s second innings on the fifth day of the first Test. Faced with impending defeat, Archer scored 30 from 50 balls from No.9 to give England a glimmer of hope before holing out to deep square leg, whereupon he was accosted by a member of the crowd as he returned to the pavilion.”The first thing I want to say about what happened towards the end of the Test at Mount Maunganui is that I’m over it,” Archer wrote. “I’ve left what happened at the ground and I’ve moved on. I should also say it was just one person who was shouting stuff.”But I found the incident a real shame. When you come to another country, you half expect fans to have a go at your cricket. If someone wants to shout at me and tell me I’m bowling badly, that’s fine. I may not agree but it’s fine. It’s part of the experience of being a touring cricketer.”To hear racism, though — that’s another matter. There is no time or place for it in any walk of life, let alone cricket. It’s just not called for.”In a Twitter post shortly after the close of play, Archer described the incident as “a bit disturbing”, adding in a separate post that was subsequently deleted that the individual concerned had been “yelling bbc and bc from the scoreboard area”.ALSO READ: England urged to look after ‘golden’ ArcherESPNcricinfo understands that the same person is thought to have contacted Archer via Instagram soon afterwards, which may help the authorities to identify him. New Zealand Cricket has pledged to ban the individual for life after reiterating their zero-tolerance attitude to racism. However, Archer himself now wants to move on, even if he remains disappointed that the spectators in the vicinity didn’t do more to address the issue at the time.”I don’t want to go into the details of what was said but I know what I heard,” he wrote. “I thought members of the crowd around the guy might have pulled him up because I could hear him from the pitch as I was walking off.”I guess they didn’t. But I know I wasn’t hearing stuff. I told the security guard what had happened and that was it. Now my only goal is to make sure we finish this series on a high because we were all disappointed with the result in the first Test.”Archer’s returns in that match were below the high standards he set himself during his debut Test series against Australia last summer, and he came in for some criticism as a consequence – not least for his bowling speeds, which rarely touched the 90mph mark of which he is capable..However, Archer insisted he had done his best in trying circumstances, and also defended the tactics used by his captain, Joe Root, in the course of a New Zealand innings that stretched to a marathon 201 overs.”I try not to read the media but I guess there’s been some talk about my bowling,” he wrote. “I did as good as I could: I sent down 42 overs and went at 2.5 in unhelpful conditions. I know I’ve never bowled more than 30 in an innings before but I felt fine. I could have bowled again the next day.”I have to accept people are going to be looking at my speeds. I thought I was bowling quicker than the speedgun suggested.”I pretty much know what speed I usually bowl at and at one point I bowled a normal ball and it came up at 120-something kilometres per hour, which is less than 80mph. That didn’t seem right.””I know Joe used me in short bursts at the start but that was mainly because we were trying to find the right ends for each bowler.”Sure, we didn’t think we’d be in the field for as long as we were but I appreciated what Joe was trying to do.”It’s also not the case that he just wanted me to bowl short. You adapt to conditions and to the batsman. Watling scored 200 and played about two pull shots. Other times the captain asks you to aim for the knee roll. It’s not one gameplan that you stick to whatever happens.”

'Unplayable' MCG pitch was a 'genuine' risk to players

Victoria captain Peter Handscomb admitted his comments about the MCG may have influenced the groundsman

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Dec-2019

Officials and groundstaff discuss the MCG pitch•Getty Images

Both captains agreed that there was a genuine risk that a player could have been seriously injured on the MCG pitch that forced the Sheffield Shield match between Victoria and Western Australia to be abandoned, while Peter Handscomb admitted comments he made last week about needing more life in the surfaces may have influenced the groundsman. The game was suspended on the first afternoon and then called off on Sunday morning after Western Australia’s batsmen were hit repeatedly around the head and chest with deliveries rearing off a length. The pitch had started soft and divots were created, which led to the alarmingly uneven bounce. It is less than three weeks until the Boxing Day Test against New Zealand, which will be played on an adjacent surface.”The game’s been abandoned so it was a pretty genuine risk,” Handscomb said. “The players want to play cricket, that’s why we are here, but player safety is key and that’s where this decision has come from.”Shaun Marsh and Marcus Stoinis, who sustained painful blows to the ribs, underwent concussion tests after the opening day.”It was quite dangerous and as the game went on it got worse,” Marsh said. “As the pitch dried out it became unplayable. My players’ safety is at the forefront of my mind. The right decision has been made and lessons will be learnt.”Following the previous Sheffield Shield match at the ground, against New South Wales, which fizzled out into a draw due to rain over the last two days, Handscomb spoke about the need to bring more life back to the pitches.”[The] MCG pitch hasn’t deteriorated for ten years,” he said. “So I think we need to start making the game accelerate at the start of it, maybe make it a bit greener like it is in Hobart, where the game accelerates at the start and then becomes a good batting wicket. But that’s up to the groundsman and see how they go.”Asked whether those comments played a part in influencing what head groundsman Matt Page produced this weekend, he said: “I think it may have helped him. We’ve had a lot draws at the MCG and it’s about finding a wicket that can get a result. Unfortunately, he’s gone a touch too far and I’m sure come Boxing Day he’ll prepare a beautiful cricket wicket.”Hindsight is a great thing. Unfortunately you can’t change anything that you do. I said stuff, that happens, so be it.”Both Handscomb and Marsh offered their support to Page, who moved to the MCG after being head groundsman at the WACA. “I know Pagey very well. He’s done some really good things since coming here. He was a great groundsman at the WACA,” Handscomb said. “He has a lot of experience behind him and has a lot of time to prepare a wicket that, I think, will produce a good Boxing Day Test.”It’s tough and he’s under the microscope at the moment through the media. He’s a great groundsman, has been for a lot of years, has worked in some different conditions and has done some great things out here.”Marsh added: “He’ll learn from this mistake and I’m sure the wicket for Boxing Day will be good.”While there will be attempts to reschedule the match, with such a packed season – and this being the last round of matches before the BBL – that is likely to prove difficult. If the game isn’t replayed then, under Cricket Australia rules, each side will get three points. Marsh said Western Australia would “let the dust settle” before assessing their options in that scenario.
