Crystal Palace may spend half of Olise’s release clause on 11-goal winger

Crystal Palace have identified a potential new addition this summer in the shape of a goalscoring winger, as Oliver Glasner looks to continue his revolution at Selhurst Park.

Olise's future in doubt

One of the biggest question marks for the South London outfit surrounds the future of Michael Olise. The talented winger has suffered another injury-studded campaign this season, but remains a highly-sought after talent across the Premier League and Europe.

Chelsea thought that they had bagged a bargain last summer when they triggered his £35m release clause, only for Olise to opt to stay put and pen a new deal at Selhurst Park, which has reportedly seen that clause jump to £60m.

That is not thought to be a major obstacle though, and all of Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United are thought to be interested in signing him this summer, with United in particular having made him a primary target.

It remains to be seen whether or not he will leave this summer, with reports claiming that he is keen to play Champions League football if he were to leave South London ahead of the new season.

He is not the only player who may depart though, with teammate Eberechi Eze also in high demand across the Premier League, amid interest from Tottenham and Manchester City, though Palace have attempted to ward that off by slapping a £60m price tag on his head too.

Now, it appears Palace are already making plans for new life in attack, and are closely monitoring another young gem.

Palace watching Serie A star

That comes as Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport [via Sport Witness] claim that Glasner's side are one of several Premier League clubs keeping tabs on young winger Matias Soulé. The 21-year-old Argentine is contracted to Juventus, but has spent the season out on loan with Frosinone, where he has managed to grab 11 goals and 3 assists in 33 Serie A outings.

But he will not be returning to Juventus, the report claims, with the Old Lady looking to cash in on his good form in order to fund their own transfer business. As a result, they 'expect to receive offers' of around 30m-35m euros for his services (£26m-£30m), while Palace and Brentford are named as the two clubs most keen on striking a deal.

And in what could perhaps be a boost for both, Soule has already admitted his dream to play in England's top flight: “If they give me the choice of a league, I would go to England. Everyone knows that it’s one of the best leagues, it would be a dream to play there. I would also like to be able to stay at Juventus.”

The fee represents just about half of what Palace would receive should Olise depart the club this summer, and would allow them plenty of flexibility to strengthen elsewhere ahead of the new season. But they will have to fight off rival Premier League interest should they decide Soule is their man.

UK government hands ECB lead on viability of 'bio-secure' sport

England will play at as few grounds as possible if cricket goes behind closed doors, says ECB CEO

George Dobell24-Apr-2020

ECB chief executive Tom Harrison•Getty Images

The ECB has been asked by the UK government to lead the way into investigating the viability of playing sport in a bio-secure environment. With an increasing acceptance that the best chance of fulfilling the broadcast deals that keep nearly all sport afloat is by playing fixtures behind closed doors, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has asked the ECB to facilitate research and discussions across several high-profile sports – including football – so that best practice can be shared and implemented. It is understood that the combination of Steve Elworthy’s experience as a manager of large-scale, complex events – Elworthy was the man behind the 2019 World Cup, among many examples – and the strong reputation of Dr Nick Peirce, the ECB’s Chief Medical Officer, has led to DCMS putting their faith in the ECB to research the matter thoroughly and with appropriate speed.ALSO READ: No English cricket before July, Hundred decision delayedThe news comes as Tom Harrison, the ECB’s chief executive, gave the strongest hint yet that the best hope of staging any international cricket this summer will be in bio-secure environments. And with that in mind, Harrison admitted that previous match allocation and schedules would be shelved as the ECB looked to utilise “the minimum number of grounds we need for our desired international schedule.””The ECB has been asked to lead by DCMS across football, horse racing, tennis and rugby,” Harrison said. “There has been a lot of communication between sports, particularly around health, as we are trying to guarantee safety. I had a conference call with the head of the FA and the RFU about a range of topics: working together; how we share information about playing behind closed doors. I’m speaking to the Premier League later. We’re facing very similar challenges and taking decisions as a sector.”Harrison defends chair-elect appointment

“Ian Watmore has come through a very rigorous nominations-committee exercise. He holds a very senior position in central government and is subject to an enormously detailed vetting process – ongoing vetting process through government channels – which would be a very different level than would be done by a search consultant or a national governing body before a critical appointment like this. We need to take that into account here. I hope the work [the review into his appointment] is completed ahead of our board meeting next week.”

Ultimately, whatever conclusions the ECB reaches, governing bodies will require government clearance before they resume playing. The ECB’s hope is that by progressing in partnership with other sports and government, all involved will reach similar conclusions at the same time and avoid any delay in seeking last-minute approvals.Current thinking suggests England will look to fulfil their international fixtures in as few as two or three grounds. Which grounds are yet to be confirmed, but the presence of large hotels on the site of the Ageas Bowl in Southampton and Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester would appear to render them likely candidates. Other grounds (such as New Road) have smaller capacity hotels on site, while some – such as Lord’s – have large hotels within close proximity. By limiting the number of grounds utilised, it should prove easier to maintain a virus-free zone and reduce costs.”Inevitably, the prospect of playing behind closed doors does change our thinking around venue allocation,” Harrison said. “With no matchday revenue the whole mind-set around hosting matches shifts. It goes from taking the game around the country to give fans a chance to see England in their back yard, to a focus on public health.”That will mean the venues which are best-suited to offering those [optimum public-health] conditions will be in a strong position. What those conditions are need to be agreed with government. We’re making sure the levels we put in place are medically and government supported. But there’s a huge cost implication around creating the [bio-secure] environment.Old Trafford could be turned into a ‘bio-secure environment’ to host behind-closed-doors internationals•AFP

“Allocating neutral venues for all matches and then playing in those is our focus. Then deciding what’s the minimum number of grounds we need for our desired international schedule and how to do cater for that. We’ve pitches to prepare and multi-day formats which add a layer of complexity.”With the domestic game there is another layer of complexity to consider as that is where you’re in the multiple team environment. So there’s definitely much more work required [on] how we understand a Blast schedule behind closed doors. Work is ongoing. It’s nowhere near finished yet. But let me be really clear: it’s absolutely our desire to get some domestic cricket this year.”Harrison also confirmed there would be no difference in criteria used to decide on the safety of international or domestic cricket. As a result, the prospect of seeing any domestic cricket in England in 2020 have dipped, while the prospect of a return of recreational cricket look distant.”It’s not a question of: here’s the measure for international cricket and here’s the measure for domestic,” Harrison said. “It’s here’s the measure to keep people safe. Cricketers: men and women; domestic and international. And the cost argument becomes more complicated as you go down through the professional ranks to the recreational game. It will certainly be a debate we have to have with the game.”One disadvantage faced by sport in the UK is the relatively low level of testing carried out at present. While the government has aspirations to drastically increase the amount of testing, at present the priority is for essential workers and their families. Harrison is fully aware it would be inappropriate to make any special plea for sport if that results in resources being redirected from more urgent areas.”What we have to be really careful with here is to understand that right now testing elite athletes or people in sport just cannot be a priority in the context of the national health crisis and the issues frontline workers and vulnerable people are facing,” Harrison said. “Government tells us when the time is right. It’s not yet clearly. We’re not lobbying the government; we’re working with them.”ALSO READ: Finishing season in Abu Dhabi ‘has to be considered’ – Surrey chairmanWhile Harrison hopes that the decision to push back the start of the season to July 1 sustains some hope of fulfilling all England’s international fixtures, he accepts the game is now at a stage where “any further delays” will result in cancelling rather than postponing games.”We’re probably getting to the point now where any further delays beyond what we’ve already planned for will involve losing cricket rather than rescheduling again. We’re making maximum use of what we anticipate being a very short season this year.”And while the Test series against West Indies was scheduled to be played ahead of the Test series against Pakistan, it could well be that the West Indies series is most likely to take place. Pakistan’s financial priority has to be the Asia Cup, scheduled for September, while West Indies seem able to be more flexible in their scheduling.Harrison has previously warned that the sport in England and Wales will take a £300m hit if no cricket is played this summer, and reiterated that the pandemic’s impact on the game has already proved “very significant”.”Even if we deliver every single game that we hope to be able to deliver, the impact is very significant now. And the impact can only really grow from here. So don’t think there isn’t a very, very significant impact on cricket already. There is. I don’t see that getting any better as we go through this summer. This will be a very significant financial problem for cricket.”But Harrison denied that the current situation threatened sustainability of the 18-county system. “The cost base of our game is too high and this is an issue we’re going to have to look at,” he said. “But don’t draw the conclusion that not everyone can survive, because that’s not the right conclusion to draw. We will do everything in our power to ensure the health of the network.”

Arsenal won the lottery with "exceptional" star worth 10x more than Partey

It was another bittersweet ending to a Premier League season for Arsenal this year as, despite coming on leaps and bounds, they once again just fell short in the face of the indomitable Manchester City.

It might take another summer of significant investments from the Kroenkes to help the club finally get over the line, but fans shouldn't forget the myriad of incredible talents they already have on their books, welcomed in by Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar.

Talents like Declan Rice, Ben White, and even Kai Havertz had a storming end to the campaign, but there is another crucial player who has come to life at the Emirates, a player who is currently worth ten times more than veteran midfielder Thomas Partey.

Martin Ødegaard's Arsenal career

The star in question is captain fantastic himself, Martin Ødegaard, who has become one of Arsenal's most important players both on and off the pitch over the last few years.

The Norwegian first joined the club on a six-month loan deal from Real Madrid in January 2021, and while he wasn't poor by any stretch of the imagination, it would be fair to say that his return of two goals and two assists in 20 games was somewhat underwhelming in the eyes of many.

However, Arteta and Edu, being the footballing masterminds they appear to be, opted to sign the former wonderkid on a permanent deal that summer for just £34m, and to say that was a brilliant decision today would be a colossal understatement.

In the three seasons since, the "exceptional" midfielder, as described by Pep Guardiola, has gone on to make another 133 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 32 goals, providing 36 assists, and taking on the captain's armband, all while still being just 25 years old.

Not only is the mercurial talent efficient in what he does and a brilliant leader on and off the pitch, but he also plays the game beautifully, often pulling off mesmerising feats of close control to beat a player, keep the ball, or play an inch-perfect through ball to Bukayo Saka out wide.

In all ways imaginable, Arsenal have a genuine world-beater for their club captain, and with his performances improving year-on-year, it's understandable to see his impressive valuation today.

Martin Ødegaard's valuation in 2024

According to the CIES Football Observatory, Odegaard is worth €100m, which comes to around £85m, or a whopping £51m more than Arsenal paid to sign him almost three years ago – talk about value for money.

Unsurprisingly, this new price makes the Norwegian the fourth most valuable player in the Premier League, alongside Cole Palmer, Gabriel Martinelli, and William Saliba.

It also means he is now worth considerably more than teammate Partey, or about ten times more, to be more specific, as the CIES price the Ghanaian international at just €10m, which converts to just under £9m.

This low valuation of a player who cost the Gunners around £45m in the summer of 2020 is likely due to three things: he is set to turn 31 next month, his contract expires next summer, and he has missed a colossal 72 games for club and country since the start of the 2020/21 campaign.

In all, while the former Atlético Madrid ace is clearly a talented player, he's too unreliable and on the wrong side of 30, so it's not all that surprising to see reports linking him with an exit this summer.

That said, while it's a shame that one of the side's star midfielders has seen his value plummet in the last season or so, Odegaard's soaring price is an excellent sign for the future, and with him as the captain, there is no telling what the Gunners will be able to achieve in the coming years.

Aaron Finch thinking ahead to Australia's 2023 World Cup plans

The downtime hasn’t stopped Australia’s limited-overs captain looking at the challenges to come

Andrew McGlashan26-Jun-2020Despite the sport largely being shutdown since March, cricket has not been far from the mind of Australia’s limited-overs captain Aaron Finch as he thinks ahead to the 2023 one-day World Cup campaign in India as well as the two T20 World Cups that are scheduled to be played before then.It appears highly unlikely that the T20 World Cup set for this October and November in Australia will take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic with a range of options on the table as to when it could be moved to, from early next year to a 12-month delay to pushing it as far as 2022. Under the current schedule, India are due to host the 2021 T20 World Cup in the October-November of that year.As things stand the next 50-over men’s World Cup will take place in February and March of 2023 in India. Following Australia’s semi-final exit in last year’s tournament, when they turned their one-day form around significantly leading into the competition, there is already considerable thought going into how to prepare.ALSO READ: Australians who could have IPL-state cricket clash”I’m a cricket nuffy so you are always thinking about it, especially being captain and with what’s coming up with the T20 World Cup, whenever that might be, and there’s a couple of them and looking forward to the 2023 50-over World Cup in India,” Finch told RSN. “We are just in the processing of nutting out how we go about winning that, what we’ll need to do down the track to be successful in those three tournaments.”In the 50-over space it’s about working back from that 2023 World Cup and really getting a detailed plan of how we think we’ll have to win it, what’s the structure of the side we’ll need in India. Is it going to be two spinners, is it going to be an extra allrounder, and kind of work back from there.”Aaron Finch drives one through cover•Associated Press

Finch, who has made clear his ambitions of still being part of Australia’s one-day squad for the next one-day World Cup, said it was important to start identifying new players who could be part of the side now so that they can be given enough game time ahead of the tournament. He suggested the selectors will be looking at around 25 names over the next couple of years being whittling it down to the final squad as the tournament approaches.”[We need to] nut out what resources we’ll need in terms of players. If there’s someone new we identify who could perhaps have a big impact, how many games can we get into them over the next two and a half years to make sure they have enough experience so in a high-pressure semi-final you aren’t going in hoping they’ll do well, you know they have the form and enough experience behind them to make sure they are comfortable with international level.”It’s either working out what the 15, or say 25 players now, what that looks like, does it match our game plan going forward, or do we pick the side the other way round with a game plan in mind and adapt it that way. It’s not rocket science, it’s going through data, a bit of gut instinct of what you feel will be the trends of one-day cricket. Will it be 400, or will it be that 320-mark with some wearing pitches in India and a couple of spinners in your side?”Since their World Cup exit against England, Australia have played seven ODIs with six of those away from home which included being beaten 3-0 in South Africa. They beat New Zealand behind closed doors at the SCG in mid-March before Covid-19 brought sport to a sudden halt. They could return to limited-overs action in September with talks continuing about heading to England for the ODI and T20I matches that were originally scheduled for July. In the 2020-21 home season they are currently scheduled to play two three-match ODI series against India and New Zealand in January.

Home debutant Dawid Malan completed a superb maiden career double hundred before watching Derbyshire battle to within touching distance of the follow-on target of 201 at Emerald Headingley.Malan’s 219 off 244 balls underpinned the White Rose’s first-innings 400 for 6 declared, achieved shortly before lunch on day three of this weather-affected North Group fixture.Derbyshire captain Billy Godleman’s 54 then led his side’s bid to avoid having to follow-on, something which would go a long way to securing an important draw against their fellow challengers. The visitors closed on 198 for 6 from 70 overs, with bad light ending play three overs early. Almost 100 overs have now been lost across three days. The gap between these two leading sides in the North was four points before this third-round clash, with Derby leading the way.England T20 batsman Malan, who could be playing his last county game until mid September should he be involved in forthcoming series against Pakistan and Australia, advanced from 153 not out overnight. He became the first Yorkshire player whose maiden century for the club ended up a double since Jonny Bairstow hit 205 against Nottinghamshire in 2011.The 32-year-old was the primary reason why Yorkshire secured the maximum five batting bonus points for reaching 400. Derby claimed two bowling points. The hosts scored 112 runs in 22.1 overs before lunch, with Malan moving to – and beyond – 200 with two fours and two sixes off Leus du Plooy’s part-time left-arm spin before falling caught at long-off trying to hit a third successive six.He completed a 200-run stand with Jonny Tattersall (66) – a fifth-wicket record for Yorkshire in first-class matches against Derbyshire.Tattersall chipped leg-spinner Matt Critchley to cover before Malan, who batted serenely in especially challenging conditions during Saturday’s opening day, fell 89 runs later.All-rounder Jordan Thompson added an unbeaten 36 before striking with the ball during the afternoon when Derbyshire lost their first two wickets on 58.Godleman and fellow opener Tom Wood united either side of lunch before the latter was caught and bowled by Thompson in the 18th over.Excellent Steve Patterson then trapped Wayne Madsen lbw for a duck before Godleman and du Plooy shared 68 for the third wicket. However, both fell in the space of four balls to Patterson across two overs after tea as Derby slipped to 127 for 4 to give the hosts an opening. Du Plooy was caught low down at first slip by Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Godleman caught behind by Bairstow.Patterson finished with figures of 3 for 16 from 16 overs.Dom Leech had Alex Hughes caught at mid-on by Duanne Olivier following a miscued pull, and Olivier added the wicket of Harvey Hosein, expertly caught behind by a diving Bairstow five overs later with the score on 174.Critchley finished the day unbeaten on 31, with Anuj Dal on 15, as the pair took their side close to a position of safety.
