Like every Premier League club, Newcastle United discovered their fate for the new season last Tuesday, with the announcement of the fixtures ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Eddie Howe and his side will be hoping for a better campaign than the most recent, which ended with heartbreak following the final domestic game.
Manchester United’s FA Cup final victory had a major knock-on effect for the Magpies. The Red Devils’ win over Manchester City sealed their qualification for the Europa League in 2024/25, knocking Chelsea down to the Europa Conference League, and Newcastle out of Europe competitions altogether. Thus, finishing in seventh, a place that usually comes with continental qualification, was in vain.
Newcastle begin the season hosting newly promoted Southampton at St James’ Park, before making one of the Premier League’s longest away trips, to the Vitality Stadium to face Bournemouth. To round off August, the Toon will host Tottenham Hotspur in what will be an exciting crunch clash.
In their quest to return to European competition next season, Newcastle will no doubt dip into the transfer market to add to their squad, They have recently been linked with one player who could bring depth and quality to their midfield.
Newcastle target midfielder
The player in question here is Southampton‘s Argentine midfielder Carlos Alcaraz. The 21-year-old was a key player for Southampton during the first half of last season as they quested for promotion, before making a loan move to Italian giants Juventus for the second half of the campaign.
According to a report from Mirko Di Natale, an Italian journalist, Newcastle are one of the clubs who are interested in signing the Argentine ahead of the new season. Di Natale claims that the Magpies and Ange Postecioglou’s Spurs side have “asked Southampton for information” on the young midfielder.
Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz.
This interest comes after Juve’s apparent reluctance to complete a deal permanently to sign the young midfielder. The Old Lady did have an optional buy clause in the loan deal, worth £40m, but they do not seem likely to keep the 21-year-old in Turin beyond the expiration of his loan deal.
This has opened the door for a move by both Newcastle and Spurs. The price they would have to pay is unclear at this time, but it could well be along the same lines as Juve’s buy clause. However, according to Football Observatory, the value of the youngster is considerably less, at just £16.9m.
Why Alcaraz would be a good signing
Alcaraz was a very important player for Southampton last season before he made the loan switch to Turin. Saints manager Russell Martin used him 23 times, with the Argentine chipping in with three goals and an assist.
At Juve, he played just ten times after suffering from a slight hamstring issue, and registered one assist along the way. Scout Antonio Mango described him as "special" in 2023, and it is clear to see why.
One of the most valuable things about Alcaraz is his versatility. Last season, across all competitions with the Saints and Juve, the 21-year-old featured in six different positions, in games in which he played 45 minutes or more. However, Kulig described the midfielder as an “advanced playmaker”, suggesting this is his best role.

Should the Magpies get this deal over the line, Alcaraz could form an excellent midfield partnership with Newcastle’s talismanic midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.
The 26-year-old Brazilian has been linked with a move away from the club constantly this summer, but his release clause of £100m has now expired, as per Fabrizio Romano, increasing his chances of staying at St James’ Park.
The pair complement each other fairly well, with Alcaraz being a wonderful ball carrier, who can operate higher up, and Guimaraes in a slightly deeper role, looking to thread through balls and progress the play, which the stats demonstrate. In all, they would form a good pairing in midfield.
kalvin-phillips-bruno-guimaraes-newcastle-opinion
As per Fbref, Alcaraz averages 2.06 progressive carries per 90 minutes, and 2.48 carries into the final third per 90. Whilst Guimaraes is still a great ball carrier, averaging 1.79 progressive carries, his progressive passing stats are slightly better than Alcaraz's numbers.
The Brazilian averages 7.80 progressive passes per 90, which is a fair amount more than the Argentine, who plays an average of 6.36 progressive passes. Creatively, the 26-year-old also excels, although not by much, averaging 1.71 key passes per 90 compared to 1.15 from Alcaraz.
Southampton midfielder Charly Alcaraz.
The issue with this pairing would perhaps come defensively. Neither are natural sitting midfielders, with both preferring to operate as number eights, or higher in Alcaraz’s case. Instead, they might be better off with a defensive midfielder behind them, who can do the dirty work as the duo look to get forward.
However, they are still good off the ball, with Alcaraz averaging 2.79 tackles and interceptions and 4.67 ball recoveries per 90, and Guimaraes averaging slightly more, with 3.39 tackles and interceptions and 6.53 ball recoveries.
douglas-luiz-bruno-guimaraes-liverpool-opinion
Should Howe’s side bring in a natural number six, it could help this midfield partnership flourish, giving them less defensive responsibility. Whilst Alcaraz and Guimaraes are not bad defenders, they will play their best football further forward and with less to worry about from a defensive point of view.
Signing Alcaraz would be an astute piece of business from Newcastle. They would be bringing in a versatile player who is a wonderful ball carrier and can work well with Guimaraes in midfield. For a fee of around £40m, it would be an excellent way to strengthen their squad as they look to secure a return to European football and target silverware in the 2024/25 season.
Newcastle can take Guimaraes to the next level by signing £34m "monster"
The Magpies are fighting Chelsea and Tottenham for this fast-rising talent.
Chelsea, having already announced the arrival of Omari Kellyman from Aston Villa, have reportedly turned their attention towards landing an international gem for Enzo Maresca this summer.
Chelsea transfer news
It's already been a fairly busy summer for the Blues, who have welcomed the likes of Kellyman and Tosin Adarabioyo with a deal also sealed to sign Estevao Willian this summer. The three arrivals will all hope to make impressive impacts, be it in the future or as soon as next season, as Maresca looks to guide Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four next season.
Speaking for the first time since completing the move, Kellyman told Chelsea's official media channels via BBC Sport: "It is fantastic to be standing here as a Chelsea player. It’s a massive club with an amazing history, so it is great to join. It is a dream come true for sure. I’m buzzing to have put on the shirt and can’t wait to get started."

ByJoe Nuttall Jun 30, 2024
Following the departure of Ian Maatsen, however, Kellyman seems unlikely to be the last name through the door. Leicester City's Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall looks set to be the next to sign for £30m.
Also, according to The Athletic's Tom Bogert, Chelsea are also in advanced talks to sign Caleb Wiley from Atlanta United this summer. The USA international is just 19 years old and could arrive to instantly fill the void left behind by Maatsen at left-back.
Whilst the deal is not done yet, Wiley would certainly follow the Chelsea trend of young players making their way to Stamford Bridge in place of academy graduates, although a move to Strasbourg first before the Blues is also a possibility.
"Amazing" Wiley can succeed Chilwell
With a difficult history of injuries at Chelsea, Ben Chilwell remains an unreliable option at Stamford Bridge despite his position as vice-captain behind Reece James. And that could see an opportunity eventually emerge for Wiley if he can fend off competition from Marc Cucurella.
Caleb Wiley for Atlanta.
Though the American is still just 19 years old, he's earned plenty of praise throughout his career, including from former Atlanta United manager Gonzalo Pineda, who said via 90Min: "Yes, for Caleb it’s [the goal] amazing. I think it was a good play overall. I think those were the moments where we were probably putting a little bit of pressure and then I think Caleb with his speed, his power and decision, he is going to get a lot of those. So, I am happy for him, he did a tremendous game."
Scoring once and assisting a further two times in all competitions last season, Wiley will hope that a potential Premier League move only results in improvement and opportunities in what is arguably the highest-quality league in world football. It's in England's top flight that he could quickly emerge to become a wise piece of business by Chelsea.

Northern remain on top even as Central Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded impressive wins

Central Punjab crush SindhSindh slumped to a heavy defeat in the absence of regular captain Sarfaraz Ahmed – who is currently with the national side in New Zealand – as Waqas Maqsood’s nine wickets helped set up Central Punjab’s first win in the competition. Six of those wickets came in the first innings where Sindh were bowled out for 92 to concede a 184-run lead to Central, who had put up 276 thanks to half-centuries from Ali Zaryab Asif and Usman Salahuddin.Sindh had their opportunities in the second innings after they reduced Central to 117 for 8, but tailenders Ahmed Safi Abdullah and Maqsood took the game away from Sindh by pushing the total to 247. Abdullah’s 60-ball 83, supported gamely by Maqsood in a 68-run tenth wicket partnership, gave Sindh a monumental 432 to chase. An attacking 89 from opener Sharjeel Khan led the reply, but support from the middle order was scant.Stand-in captain Asad Shafiq’s vigil at the crease, lasting 54 minutes and 35 balls without producing a run, summed up Sindh’s chase, and indeed their game. The rest was routine, with Hasan Ali making a welcome return to form, taking 4 for 66 as Central completed the rout by 227 runs. They still remain rooted to the bottom of the table, but the win – and the margin of victory – will do their prospects no harm whatsoever.Northern consolidate top spotNorthern strengthened their hold at the top of the table following an impressive six-wicket defeat of Southern Punjab in what turned out to be the only fairly competitive fixture of the sixth round. Southern, batting first after winning the toss, scored 285 which was largely down to a 143-run fourth-wicket partnership between Umar Siddiq and Saif Badar, who scored 89 and 81, respectively. Northern’s response included a hundred from Umar Amin, while Hammad Azam chipped in with 91, as they moved to a 96-run lead.In Southern’s second innings, Agha Salman got his second half-century of the game, and Imran Rafiq also hit a fifty to ensure Northern would have a challenging 200 to chase while batting last. However, the requirement proved more straightforward than what it seemed at first glance thanks to 65 from Amin in a 97-run second-wicket partnership with opener Nasir Nawaz. The pair took the pressure off after the loss of opener Sarmad Bhatti for no score, and Azam ensured his side would finish with a flourish, smashing 53 off 48 to take Northern clear at the top by six points.Khyber Pakhtunkhwa sink BalochistanKhyber Pakhtunkhwa remain hot on the heels of table-toppers Northern following their third win in six games, a 175-run defeat of Balochistan. A magnificent 153 from 25-year old Kamran Ghulam inspired Khyber, as he ended up scoring nearly half the runs in a team total of 320. Ghulam kept the runs ticking over even as his team-mates struggled to kick on despite decent starts, with only wicketkeeper-batsman Rehan Afridi making a respectable 58. In reply, Balochistan collectively managed a mere 120, giving Khyber a decisive 200-run first innings lead.Even though Khyber managed just 199 in their second dig, a Balochistan side that had just one win all season still needed to chase 400 to win, a task that only became more challenging after they slipped to 95 for 3. Though Balochistan gave a better account of themselves in the second innings, no batsman could get to more than Ali Waqas’ 44. That meant the chase was never really a serious prospect, as Sameen Gul followed up his three-for in the first innings with as many wickets in the second to rip through the middle order. Eventually, Balochistan folded up for 224 with Mohammad Wasim also getting three wickets for Khyber.

However, the 26-year-old may just be one of two new central defensive additions this summer, with reports still linking Chelsea to top-quality new players who could star at the heart of Maresca's new-look backline.
GiveMeSport shared the news last week that Chelsea could use Trevoh Chalobah in a part-exchange bid for Murillo, who played a crucial role for Nottingham Forest last season as they narrowly avoided Premier League relegation.
Murillo
At one point, Chelsea were involved in a public race with Arsenal to sign Riccardo Calafiori as well, but the Italy international has agreed a five-year contract with the Gunners as they look to agree on a deal with Bologna (Fabrizio Romano).
It remains to be seen if Maresca's side perhaps mount a last-minute hijack to sign the 22-year-old, which has happened in the past where Arsenal are concerned, like with Chelsea's deal for Mykhailo Mudryk in 2023.
In the meantime, Chelsea continue to eye alternatives to Calafiori, with former Real Madrid prodigy Mario Hermoso now on their radar. The 29-year-old recently left Real's arch rivals, Atletico Madrid, on a free after his contract expired – making him up for grabs at zero cost.
Chelsea make approach for Hermoso as Conte tries to sign him for Napoli
The Spaniard, who made 174 appearances in total for Atletico and helped guide them to a La Liga title in 2021, is desperately wanted by ex-Chelsea boss Conte at Napoli.
According to Radio Punto Nuovo, Conte is said to have explained his methods and project to Hermoso personally, and has even asked the versatile centre-back to wait for Napoli as the Serie A side work to make player sales before signing him.
Mario Hermoso
The ex-Espanyol star was apparently impressed by his talks with Conte as well, but Premier League sides are lingering in the background and still offer Napoli a threat.
Chelsea have approached Hermoso's agents over potentially signing him and hijacking Conte's move, tentatively asking for information on a deal. Another one of Conte's former clubs, Tottenham, are also described as a danger to Napoli's move as they display "dormant interest".

Chelsea’s hunt for a striker feels as though it’s never-ending with new boss Enzo Maresca still yet to secure the services of a new centre-forward.
Alexander Isak, Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres are just three players who have been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, but no moves are yet to materialise for any of the Blues’ transfer targets.
The club do currently have Romelu Lukaku at their disposal, but given his huge £325k-per-week earnings, they would be wise to offload the Belgian this summer with various sides interested in his signature this window.
New Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca
It’s undoubtedly a frustrating situation to be in for the Italian boss, with the season just around the corner and owner Todd Boehly unable to fulfil his request of signing a striker who can catapult his side back to the top end of the Premier League in 2024/25.
As a result, the Blues could turn to one player who they have previously been linked with, but also previously employed during the early stages of his professional career.
Chelsea could re-sign former talent with £65m clause
In recent months, Chelsea’s striker hunt has seen them linked with former academy talent Dominic Solanke after his 19-goal campaign with Bournemouth during 2023/24.
Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.
After joining Chelsea at the age of eight, striker Solanke enjoyed a rapid rise through the club's academy setup, starring for various age categories before signing a scholarship with the club in 2012.
However, it wasn't enough to catapult him into the Blues' first team, with the forward failing to make a single appearance for Chelsea during the 2016/17 season, before departing Stamford Bridge for Liverpool at the end of his deal – with the Blues receiving just £3m for the forward.
Seven years on from his departure from west London, the club’s desperation in their attempts to sign a new striker could see them replicate a deal for Lukaku and pay over the odds for a player they let go at a bargain price.
It’s previously been reported that the 26-year-old has a £65m release clause in his current deal at the Vitality, with Solanke an upgrade on Maresca’s current centre-forward options.
Why Solanke would be an upgrade on Nicolas Jackson
Senegalese striker Nicolas Jackson joined the Blues in a deal worth up to £30m last summer, scoring 14 goals in his debut Premier League campaign at Stamford Bridge.
However, despite his respectable tally of goals, it may not be enough to secure a regular first-team spot in 2024/25, with Maresca wanting a more senior option for Jackson to learn from.
Nicolas Jackson
Solanke could prove to be that type of player for the Blues, whilst also being a cheaper alternative to Victor Osimhen.
The Nigerian striker has also been linked with a move over £100m to west London this summer, with FBref claiming Solanke is a similar player to the Napoli forward – understandable given their all-round abilities and similar goal tallies of 19 and 15 last campaign, respectively.
The 26-year-old Cherries attacker has blown Jackson out of the water in recent times, providing that out-and-out centre forward option the club have been craving.

Solanke managed more combined goals and assists whilst also managing a better goal per shot on target ratio than the former Villarreal talisman – undeniably living up to the “deadly” name tag given to him by former boss Scott Parker.
He’s also won more aerials per 90, whilst having a better aerial success rate – providing the option to play more crosses into the box by wingers such as Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer.
Dominic Solanke scores in Bournemouth's away victory against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
Given the length of the club’s pursuit to sign a new striker, they can easily bring the hunt to an end with the potential addition of Bournemouth's main goalscorer.
He's consistently demonstrated his goalscoring abilities in the Premier League, handing Chelsea a cheaper alternative to their current transfer targets whilst also improving on the current options at Maresca’s disposal.
Chelsea offered chance to sign incredible £75m Isak & Osimhen alternative
The Blues are still looking to sign a new centre-forward this summer.
