Arsenal struck gold on "wizard" worth way more than Maddison & Son combined

Arsenal have endured an interesting start to their Premier League campaign this season.

Mikel Arteta's side beat Wolverhampton Wanderers at home, came away from Villa Park with all three points, and then looked on target to make it three from three against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

However, a second yellow for Declan Rice put the Gunners under immense pressure, and they were forced to settle for a single point, but with 35 games to go, there is plenty of time to recover.

Moreover, with the North London Derby the next game on the horizon, Arteta's side have the perfect opportunity to bounce back, and considering one of the club's most important players is worth more than James Maddison and Son Heung-min combined, it wouldn't be all that surprising to see them win a third match in a row at Spurs.

Maddison and Son's valuation in 2024

So, after spending a considerable amount of time in the Midlands playing for Leicester City, Maddison joined Spurs for £40m last summer, and it would be fair to say that he endured a mixed campaign in North London.

For example, in his first 11 league games for the club, he scored three goals and provided five assists, equating to a goal involvement once every 1.37 games, but after coming back from the ankle injury he sustained in that 11th match, he could only muster one goal and four assists in his final 17 league appearances, equating to a less impressive average of a goal involvement every 3.4 games.

This middling season from a player expected to help take the North Londoners to the next level has understandably impacted his valuation, with Football Transfers now pricing him at around €28m, which is about £24m, or £16m less than he cost last summer.

rodrigo-bentancur-james-maddison-tottenham-opinion

On the other hand, Son had a barnstorming year for Postecoglou in 23/24 and proved that while he's getting older, he can still be just as effective in attack.

For example, in his 36 appearances for the Lilywhites, the South Korean superstar scored 17 goals and provided ten assists, meaning he managed to maintain an average of a goal involvement once every 1.33 games, which was also unsurprisingly enough to make him the club's most productive player.

Spurs striker Heung-min Son

However, while he was incredible, the fact he's 32 and has just a year remaining on his contract has clearly impacted his valuation, with Football Transfers pricing him at just €28m – £24m – as well, which means that even when combined with Maddison, the pair have a lower valuation than one of the Gunners' most important players.

Martin Odegaard's valuation in 2024

Yes, the Arsenal star in question is captain fantastic himself, Martin Odegaard.

The Norwegian wonderkid first joined the Gunners on a six-month loan spell in January 2021, and while he didn't blow anyone's socks off with his performances, he impressed Arteta and Edu, who brought him back in August of the same year for a fee that's sure to hit £34m with add-ons.

Since his move was made permanent, the former Real Madrid prospect has gone from strength to strength in N5, and while there was a discussion among the fanbase in 2021 about whether the club should sign him or Maddison, you'd be hard-pressed to find a fan who'd swap the 25-year-old for the Spurs ace today.

In all, the midfield "wizard", as dubbed by former footballer Babayele Sodade, has scored 35 goals and provided 25 assists in just 156 appearances for the Red side of North London, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 2.6 games.

However, he was particularly impressive last season, racking up 11 goals and 11 assists in 48 matches, meaning he maintained an even more impressive average of a goal involvement once every 2.18 games.

So, with an impressive track record in England and a trajectory suggesting he's only going to keep getting better, it should come as no surprise to see his valuation has increased as well, with Football Transfers now pricing the Norwegian at around €74m, which converts to about £62m, or £14m more than Maddison and Son combined.

Ultimately, while there were a few question marks around Odegaard when he moved to Arsenal over three years ago, there can be no doubt that his transfer has been a roaring success and that he's now one of the first names on the teamsheet for Arteta.

The BCCI is likely to postpone the fourth edition of the Women’s T20 Challenge owing to the potential unavailability of overseas players in the wake of restrictions imposed by several countries on travel to and from India, where a second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has led to several world-record daily spikes of cases this month.Although the BCCI has made no announcement on the 2021 T20 Challenge yet, ESPNcricinfo understands that officials have internally acknowledged the several logistical challenges involved in flying in overseas players from countries like England, Australia, South Africa, the West Indies, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Last year, 12 overseas players, including Deandra Dottin, Sune Luus, Danielle Wyatt, and Nathakan Chantham, featured in the three-team tournament. On Tuesday, Australia suspended all direct passenger flights from India due to the unprecedented spike in Covid-19 cases. The T20 Challenge is normally played during the IPL playoffs week. If the same window were to be identified for this year, the tournament would have been held in the last week of May when the men’s IPL playoffs are scheduled. Since its inception, the T20 Challenge has been held at a single venue, with the 2020 edition played in Sharjah when the IPL was staged in the UAE, and the 2019 event held in Jaipur. While the IPL 2021 is being conducted in a caravan model – one stadium each in two cities are in operation at one time – across six cities, it is understood that the board had been considering Delhi as a likely host for the women’s competition before the second wave of the pandemic wreaked havoc in India. The T20 Challenge started in 2018 as a one-off exhibition match comprising two teams. Since the 2019 edition, the competition has featured three teams – Velocity, Supernovas, and Trailblazers – competing in a total of four games, including the final, with premier India players Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Smriti Mandhana the captains.

The ongoing unofficial Test match between Zimbabwe A and South Africa A in Harare has been suspended, after a directive from the Zimbabwean government in light of rising Covid-19 cases, but Zimbabwe Cricket is appealing for the fixture to be completed. One day of the four has been completed, with the match scheduled to end on Wednesday. Zimbabwe’s Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) instructed an end to all sporting activities from Monday. In response, Zimbabwe Cricket has agreed to put a stop to all cricket activities but will petition the government to allow the match to run to its conclusion in a biosecure environment and to permit the national men’s team to continue preparations for the tour of Ireland in August. In a statement issued on Monday morning, ZC confirmed they have asked the SRC to consider their request to let some cricket activity continue.”ZC has, however, lodged an urgent appeal to the Government, through the Sports and Recreation Commission, for permission to complete the ongoing four-day international match as well as to continue with preparations for other upcoming international tours that we had already committed to,” the statement read.”As we make this request, the health and safety of our players, support staff and our communities remains our top priority.”Having successfully hosted international and domestic tournaments at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic under the bio-secure environment – with the matches being played behind closed doors with no spectators allowed in the stadia and with all those directly involved undergoing several tests for the coronavirus and staying in secluded accommodation facilities – we believe we are well-equipped and experienced enough to safely resume with our cricket activities.”Zimbabwe has fared relatively well in the pandemic with fewer than 40,000 cases in the country and deaths under 2,000. They have suffered a four-fold increase in case numbers over the last week and are under new restrictions to contain the spread of the virus, including a ban on all gatherings except funerals, which are limited to 30 people.Neighbouring South Africa is also seeing a rise in Covid-19 case numbers and its National Institute for Communicable Diseases has declared the country to be in the third wave. Sporting activities are ongoing in South Africa, behind closed doors.

Wolves flop who left in 2021 is now worth £76m & better than Neves

Gary O'Neil and his Wolves side have had a tough start to the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, losing to Arsenal and Chelsea already, before getting a draw against Nottingham Forest to gain their first point of the season.

One area Wolves were looking to recruit over the summer was midfield, once dominated by a Portuguese trio of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Matheus Nunes. The central department at Molineux has certainly lost a lot of quality in the past few years.

Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves.

Neves made 48 appearances for Al-Hilal last season in all competitions last season, scoring seven goals, and providing 12 assists in 4,073 minutes.

While Andre was signed from Brazilian shores, they must lust after the return of one player, in particular. That man is midfield sensation Vitinha.

Vitinha's time at Wolves

Vitinha spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan with Wolves, making 22 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing one assist in his 711 minutes played. That sole goal – a long-range stunner – came against Chorley in the FA Cup.

The midfielder played alongside the likes of Neves and Moutinho under manager Nuno Espírito Santo, finishing 13th in the Premier League that season.

The Portugal international initially came through the ranks at Porto, making 59 appearances for their senior team either side of his loan to Wolves, before earning a move to PSG in 2022, joining the club for around €40m (£33.7m).

vitinha-wolves

Since then, he's certainly become a fine young talent, one that's currently valued at £76m by the Parisiens.

Vitinha vs Neves comparison

Vitinha is now a key figure at PSG, making 46 appearances last season for the French giants in all competitions, scoring nine goals and providing five assists.

It's safe to say he's been pretty good. So good in fact that he's incredibly among the Ballon d'Or nominees for 2024. That's a far cry from that wintery night in Chorley, isn't it?

Whilst Vitinha is now entering his prime years, his ex-colleague Neves is currently spending his final playing years in Saudi Arabia. The duo are playing at different levels, but Wolves could certainly do with the passing qualities of either one of these midfielders right now. Here's how they compare…

Vitinha has really started to establish himself as one of the best passers in Europe, completing 7.84 progressive passes per 90, thus ranking within the top 7% of midfielders on the continent for that statistic.

Neves, in his final season at Wolves, averaged fewer progressive passes per 90 (6.51), fewer passes into the final third per 90 (6.03), and fewer key passes per 90 (0.96). Those are number which shows the level Vitinha is currently performing at in France.

An area Neves still outperformed the former loanee when comparing these two seasons is on the defensive end making more tackles and more interceptions per 90. To put those statistics into context, we can compare them to the current duo at Molineux.

Wolves' midfield pairing consists of Mario Lemina and Joao Gomes, who are both brilliant players in their own right. However, Lemina is better known for his off-ball work, averaging 2.82 tackles per 90, whilst Gomes also offers similar assets going box to box, leaving them with a lack of passing quality in the middle.

Vitinha is the exact type of player Wolves could use in midfield to balance things, control games better, and bring their talented attackers such as Matheus Cunha into the game more.

He has impressed on loan in the Championship

He was anonymous: Arteta could now be forced to drop 5/10 Arsenal star

Last week Mikel Arteta would have been waking up with cold sweats, that’s if he was even able to sleep.

The Arsenal manager was given a number of dilemmas after his squad were seemingly dropping like flies in the build-up to a pivotal north London derby.

They knew about Declan Rice for two weeks after his red card against Brighton but there were late blows to the likes of Riccardo Calafiori and Martin Odegaard who were both injured on international duty with Italy and Norway respectively.

They were also missing new signing Mikel Merino with a shoulder problem and Oleksandr Zinchenko sat out with his own fitness issues.

That meant that Arsenal’s bench was extremely thin on the ground for their trip across north London with five of the players named among the substitutes being Hale Enders.

Ethan Nwaneri was the most notable and was joined by Maldini Kacurri and Ismeal Kabia who enjoyed their first senior call-ups. Ayden Heaven and Myles Lewis-Skelly who were both seen in pre-season were on the bench too.

So, although it was only Nwaneri who was seen on the field, this was a remarkably impressive win for the Gunners who ran away back to the Emirates with a 1-0 win courtesy of Gabriel’s bullet header in the second half.

He shrugged off Cristian Romero with absolute ease for his goal before leaping high and heading past a helpless Guglielmo Vicario in the Tottenham net.

The goal-scoring defender was also a monster at the back, making a whopping eight clearances, blocking two shots and winning two of his three ground duels.

It was a complete performance but compliments must also be handed to goalkeeper David Raya who is proving to be quite the signing, just over one year on from his initial loan move from Brentford.

Raya won 100% of his duels in the match – he hasn’t actually lost a duel yet this season – and made four saves inside the penalty box. Spurs couldn’t get past him, nor can many teams. The Spanish gloveman already has three clean sheets to show for his efforts in four matches.

However, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows from an Arsenal perspective

Arsenal's biggest underperformer against Spurs

Speaking at full-time, Arteta obviously sported a beaming smile but was he 100% happy with the performance of his side? No.

Talking to Sky Sports, he noted: “We had some great moments in open spaces where we should have done a lot more than we actually did.

“We weren’t the best with the ball today and we did a lot of simple things wrong. The sequence of passes you can do against them are very few because they jump and press every ball, they make it very difficult.”

Those difficult moments that the Spaniard talks about were perhaps as a result of not having Odegaard in the team.

The Norwegian has been the man who makes things tick in this Arsenal team for so long and when the club can’t play him, they do lack genuine creativity from a central area.

So, how did Arteta try to fix that on Sunday afternoon? He gave Leandro Trossard the playmaking keys.

Did he make up for Odegaard’s absence? In truth, the Belgian struggled in an unfamiliar role. Handed a 5/10 match rating by GOAL’s Charles Watts, the Arsenal reporter noted that Trossard ‘couldn’t really get into the game and took some risks when in possession.’

Indeed, there was one particular moment in the first half where he surrendered the ball far too easily in the middle of the park when the Gunners were in a promising position in Spurs’ half. He should have done much better to continue the attack.

That was one of nine times the former Brighton star gave away the ball during an indifferent performance where he left the pitch having had fewer touches than Raya’s 48.

Arsenal face Atalanta in the Champions League on Thursday and with Odegaard still a bit of a doubt, Arteta may have to stick with Trossard in an unfamiliar role.

That said, he does have other options. Kai Havertz could be moved back into more of a number 10 role while Nwaneri – who looked so composed when he came on in the derby – may well be handed his first senior start. The latter, in particular, is something the Arsenal boss must explore, with Trossard moving back to the bench.

India's XI 'takes the pitch and conditions out of the equation' – India fielding coach R Sridhar

Indications are both teams aren’t tweaking plans yet, given they still have five days available to them, but India will take a call on their XI ‘if needed’ at toss time

Andrew Miller18-Jun-20210:58

Dale Steyn: I’d bowl shorter to Williamson than I would to Kohli

India’s XI for the World Test Championship final has been chosen to “take the pitch and conditions out of the equation”, according to their fielding coach, R Sridhar, who said he did not anticipate any changes to the team announced by the BCCI on the eve of the match, despite the first day of the contest being washed out.The frustration on the opening day of the final, between India and New Zealand in Southampton, was mitigated to a degree by the provision for a reserve sixth day, which will now be triggered in the event that the title cannot be decided in the next four days of play. And for that reason, both Sridhar and Tom Latham, New Zealand’s vice-captain, agreed there was little need yet for either side to start formulating alternative plans.”I was expecting this to be the first question,” Sridhar said. “I think the XI which has been announced is the XI which takes the pitch and conditions out of the equation,” he added, referring to the team India had named containing two front-line spinners in R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, alongside a trio of quicks in Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami and Ishant Sharma. “I think it’s an XI which can play and perform on any given surface in any given weather conditions. So that is what I believe this XI is all about, which we will put in the park.””But having that said, the toss is not yet over, so we will … if it needs to be taken, there will be a decision taken at the time of the toss.”Watch cricket on ESPN+

The WTC final is available in the US on ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the match.

New Zealand, at this stage, are still keeping their intentions under wraps. Kane Williamson’s hopes of recovering from his elbow problem will have been improved by an extra day of rest, after he underwent a cortisone injection earlier in the week, but their main dilemma revolves around the balance of their attack. The prospect of further damp conditions for the rest of the week may yet persuade New Zealand to omit their spinner, Ajaz Patel, in favour of a five-man seam and swing attack. However, Latham said that all such decisions would have to wait until the covers are removed and the team has a chance to assess the nature of the pitch.”It probably doesn’t change a huge amount,” he said of the first-day washout. “For us it’s about adapting to whatever conditions we’re faced with, whether it’s tomorrow or whenever it may be.”With the extra day that we’ve got up our sleeve, the game can still go the full five days … so it’s important that we aren’t caught on the hop. We’ve been in this situation many times before as cricketers, and I guess it’s about trying to stay ready when we’re called upon.””We haven’t confirmed the final XI yet,” he added. “I’m sure Kane and Steady [coach Gary Stead] have a few contingencies in place but, as I say, we’ll have to wait until the canvas comes off and we get the chance to play.”Day one was washed out without a ball bowled, bringing the reserve day into play•PA Photos/Getty Images

In the meantime, the challenge for both teams has been to keep their focus on the long-term aim of winning this one-off Test, while at the same time switching off for the short term. Latham admitted that New Zealand’s dressing-room had achieved this mainly through the medium of table tennis and darts, but the concurrent Women’s Test against England in Bristol had given India’s men a separate contest to get stuck into.”We have not missed a bit of the girls’ game right from day one,” Sridhar said. “All of us have seen the game. It’s been live going on in our rooms, in our team room, in our breakfast area, and even today while we are waiting for the rain to stop. All of us were sitting together and watching the girls’ game and encouraging our girls.”We know they are fighting to get back into the game,” he added, after India’s 17-year-old opening batter, Shafali Verma, posted her second half-century of the match in response to the team being made to follow on. “We’re seeing they put up a strong performance there. We are enjoying the innings from Shafali … her mindset is so clear.”Related

“Looking at the wicket, we thought maybe we could play the finals there,” he joked. “The ball is turning a bit so we’re just wondering if we shift the finals from here to Bristol. What do you reckon?”Sridhar had no doubt, however, that India would have their game faces on when the time comes to get the WTC final underway.”As motivation goes, I don’t think you need to motivate anyone who’s representing their country. And in a World Test Championship final, I think there is no further and better motivation than that,” he said.”They are a very, very experienced bunch of players. They have played a few finals, they have won a few tournaments and they’ve played a few Test matches, each one of them in that XI.”We’ve all been very close because most of our time we have always been in the bubble, so there’s a great camaraderie in this team,” he added. “So passing time amongst us is the easiest thing. The chat and the games that they play is always on.”
