Quick takes 4 for 53 but 73 from Jordan Silk reduced Tasmania’s first-innings deficit

Jhye Richardson’s case to play in the first Ashes Test is getting stronger by the day after he ripped through Tasmania’s middle-order to help give Western Australia a healthy lead heading into the final day at Bellerive Oval.Richardson took 4 for 53 to help bowl Tasmania out for 317, giving him 12 wickets in his last three Shield innings and 20 for the season in just four games. Cameron Green then tuned up for the Ashes with a fine unbeaten half-century to give WA a lead of 258 heading into the final day.Richardson produced a stunning burst with the second new ball early on day three nicking off Ben McDermott and Jake Doran as Tasmania collapsed from 2 for 214 to 9 for 259. Cameron Gannon and Matthew Kelly picked up five wickets between them in the aftermath of Richardson’s burst. But Jordan Silk made a defiant 73 to ensure the first-innings deficit was under 100. He added 58 for the 10th wicket with Gabe Bell who contributed just 8 runs. WA pushed nearly all their fielders into the deep and Silk picked them apart with some intelligent batting.WA started their second innings strongly with a 69-run opening stand between Cameron Bancroft and Jayden Goodwin before offspinner Jarrod Freeman struck twice in back-to-back overs. Sam Whiteman could not back up his first-innings century edging Peter Siddle behind for 13 but Green steadied alongside Hilton Cartwright. The pair put on 70 before Cartwright fell late in the day. Green struck six boundaries in his half-century and is well placed alongside Josh Philippe to tee off on the fourth morning as WA push for a declaration.
Nottingham Forest have not been shy about spending big money since they returned to the Premier League three seasons ago. After two campaigns battling against relegation back to the Championship, they have flown out of the traps this term.
Impressively, the Midlands club sit third in the Premier League table, one point ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea, their nearest challengers for a top-four spot. They have been superb defensively, conceding just seven times, the second-fewest in the top flight, behind only Liverpool.
So far, the men in Garibaldi Red have had a superb season. They are no doubt desperate to maintain this form and have been linked with a player who could add great strength to the squad in January.
Nottingham Forest transfer news
The player in question here is Bayern Munich and French under-21 international attacker Mathys Tel. The 19-year-old has struggled for game time at the German giants, and could well depart the club in the 2025 winter transfer window.
Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel
According to a report from Florian Plettenberg, the Midlands club are “interested” in signing the French winger, and “have already made contact” with Bayern over a potential deal. They will not be alone in their hunt for his signature, however, with German outfit Werder Bremen also chasing him.
Any potential deal would reportedly just be a loan rather than a permanent move at this stage, There could, however, be a crucial stumbling block to signing Tel this winter, with Plettenberg reporting that he “has no plans to leave” Bavaria on a temporary deal.
Why Tel would be a good signing
It would be a fantastic statement of intent to sign such a hot prospect this winter from the Midlands outfit. Interestingly, he is a player whom Edu reportedly wanted to sign at Arsenal. The Brazilian will join Forest’s owner Evangelos Marinakis in an unspecified boardroom role following a shock resignation from Arsenal. There is certainly a link between Tel and Edu.
It has been a tough start to the season for the young Frenchman. Under new boss Vincent Kompany, his minutes have not really increased, playing 224 minutes across seven games so far, two of which include starts. The dynamic winger has yet to find the back of the net, either.
With that being said, the teenage sensation, described as a “jewel” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, has a good record for the Bavarian side. He has played 76 times so far scoring 16 goals and grabbing six assists in just 2230 minutes, equivalent to 24 full 90 minutes.
Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel.
Should the Midlands outfit bring in the attacker, who is valued at £33.5m by Transfermarkt, he could be an upgrade on Callum Hudson-Odoi. The Chelsea academy graduate has been an important player for the Midlands side this term, scoring two goals in ten Premier League games, but statistically, Tel edges him in many metrics.
When looking at the pair’s stats from last season, there is a clear difference between each. It is worth considering that one played for a high-possession, attacking side in Bayern, whereas Forest were scrapping against relegation. However, in some metrics, there is still a clear gap.
Callum Hudson-Odoi scores for Forest
As per FBref, Bayern’s starlet averaged more passes into the final third, with 1.97 each game, and more passes into the penalty area, with 1.62. In contrast, the English winger played 0.97 passes into the final third and 1.55 passes into the penalty area.
The Frenchman also had more success in take-ons last term than the Forest number 14. He completed 3.16 per game, with a 55.2% completion rate, compared to just 2.09 for Hudson-Odoi, who completed 53.8%.

It would certainly be a statement of intent from Forest – and the incoming Edu – to bring Tel in. Not only could he challenge and potentially upgrade Hudson-Odoi, but they would be adding a highly-rated youngster who can play right across the forward line.
In terms of signing a young, hungry player who would continue to fuel a shock European charge, there are perhaps few better.
Edu and Nottingham Forest make contact to sign "machine" versatile attacker
Evangelos Marinakis is set to triple Edu’s salary.

Still sitting top of the Championship, Sunderland could fall victim to their own success, with Borussia Dortmund now reportedly increasingly confident that they’ll sign one of Regis Le Bris’ star men.
Sunderland transfer news
After spending much of the last campaign without a permanent manager and struggling in the bottom half, to say that Sunderland’s rise to the top of the Championship is unexpected would be an understatement. Le Bris has enjoyed a near perfect start to life in charge of the Black Cats, who find themselves in a serious race for promotion now that they’re level on points with Sheffield United after a 2-2 draw against Coventry City last time out.
As ever with in-form sides though, Sunderland’s recent success could come at a cost. Le Bris’ side is undoubtedly full of talent and that has already seen the likes of Chris Rigg linked with a move away.
The teenager is one of the hottest prospects in English football and has attracted the interest of top clubs such as Manchester United as a result. But he’s not the only midfielder who could yet be on the move.
Sunderland struck gold on "eye-catching" star whose value has soared 500%
Sunderland have yet another player who could go for millions down the line.
ByKelan Sarson Nov 14, 2024
According to Football Insider, Borussia Dortmund are now increasingly confident of signing Jobe Bellingham to hand him the same path that his brother, Jude Bellingham, took before eventually earning a move to Real Madrid.
The £12,500-a-week star certainly has a big decision to make. On paper, Dortmund makes perfect sense. They’ve already played a major part in one Bellingham’s rise, so why fix what’s not broken?
With that said, game time is currently crucial for the 19-year-old and he’s getting just that at Sunderland, who are fighting for promotion. To leave at a time when a Premier League place is up for grabs may be a mistake for Bellingham.
"Strong" Bellingham should stay put
Of course, turning down a club of Borussia Dortmund’s calibre is easier said than done, especially given their connection to the family. But it’s something that Bellingham should do. For the first time in his career, a Premier League place is in sight and the Sunderland man has the chance to do something that his brother has, ultimately, never done by stepping foot in England’s top flight.
Still just 19 years old too, this shouldn’t be the first time that one of Europe’s elite come knocking. For now though, Bellingham and Sunderland should keep the door shut to a potential departure.
Unsurprisingly, Bellingham has earned a lot of praise in recent months, including from new manager Le Bris, who told reporters in pre-season as relayed by We Are Sunderland: “He has the great potential to press because he is physical and strong and energetic. That part of the game he can be very strong.
“Then from this position as a number eight on the left he can create a relationship with Jack, for example, or Dennis. Of course they need experience together to improve that triangle but I think that it could be a good position for him.”
He wants his team to get over the news as soon as possible as they look to bounce back against India

‘No surprises’ in Cullinan’s South Africa XI
Dean Elgar was “pretty shocked” by Quinton de Kock’s decision to retire from Test cricket but has asked the South African squad to “move on” quickly as they seek to level the series against India.de Kock, who was due to miss the second and third Tests on paternity leave, retired from Test cricket entirely at the conclusion of the Boxing Day Test. He announced his decision to the team on the evening of December 30 but had told some members about his plans to step away earlier. Elgar did not seem to be one of those. “I was pretty shocked. I wasn’t aware this was going to happen, but sitting down with Quinny that evening and him explaining to me the reason, I very much respect his decision and fully understand the space he is in,” Elgar said. “Hopefully it doesn’t come back one day and he still wishes he was part of our red-ball set-up.”Despite supporting de Kock’s choice, Elgar did not take the news entirely well, especially as it comes on the back of several other issues affecting South African cricket, on and off the field. “It’s disappointing. Not having Quinny around is disappointing for me,” he said. “It’s something I need to get over because I know there’s other talented players within our system that I need to give a lot of attention to now and that’s perfectly fine. As tough as it is, it’s one of those things you need to crack on with and get over as quickly as possible. The players respect the environment, we’ve realised we’ve had quite a few setbacks over recent times and this is just another one we need to be clever around and we need to get over because the game moves on. I don’t see this affecting the players and them still being shocked about his retirement.”But de Kock’s decision, at just 29 years old, has prompted a deeper look into the sustainability of Test cricket, especially in an age of lucrative T20 leagues and long international tours in bio-bubbles. Though there is talk of others, both in South Africa and elsewhere, opting to give up the longest format, Elgar does not think that is imminent. “I don’t think his decision is going to jeopardise Test cricket. His reasons are his reasons and we as a group respect that. We have to get over it and move on. The game moves on when guys retire. I have been fortunate enough to have experienced quite a few big South African retirements and one thing I have realised is that the game continues. You’re not immortal and the game definitely doesn’t stop for you.”Dean Elgar has hinted at South Africa not playing an all-pace attack at the Wanderers•AFP/Getty Images
Elgar debuted in 2012 and in every year since then there has been at least one high-profile retirement. “Tell me about it,” he said, when reminded of some of those who have walked away in the time he has been part of the side. “If it was up to me, I wouldn’t have had any of those guys retire but retirements are part and parcel of the game. I don’t think it’s the kind of thing you can control because it’s out of your hands as another player.”Which brought Elgar to what he can control, starting with what he has done behind the scenes to keep spirits high as South Africa, at 1-0 down, enter a must-win match at the Wanderers. “I don’t think I can say the words that I’ve been saying recently but we’ve had hard chats,” he said. “I have had a lot of talks with the guys, even if it’s in a personal capacity. I take the guys aside and just chat, give them a little bit of affirmation to put him in a better mind space.”One word that has come up in those conversations is responsibility. Elgar has said: “Players have to take responsibility. You can talk and talk until there’s action. I said to the guys: ‘I need to see actions’. Test cricket is a hard and ruthless environment and if you want to survive and be successful in this format you need to ask yourself the hard questions and respond to those questions. That’s the culture I was brought up with and I want the other guys to think about it. They’re not bad players. They haven’t become any weaker. They just need to be mentally a bit more switched on and understand Test cricket is bloody tough and you’re facing some of the best bowlers in the world now. You need to put on your big boy pants and react to what’s happened.”The batting group seems to have been on the receiving end of most of the chats, with Elgar pointing the first fingers at himself and his opening partner Aiden Markram, who have not posted a stand greater than four in their last three Tests. “Aiden and I need to look after the new ball. That allows our Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 to play as naturally as possible. We know as an opening pair we need to get us off to a better start to give the guys a clearer mindset going in,” Elgar said.He also wants more from the middle order, specifically vice-captain Temba Bavuma. “You need big hundreds to compete and win. We are aware of that. We were very disappointed that we [just] had two fifties [by Elgar himself and Bavuma] in the previous match, knowing that I can score big hundreds,” he said. “And Temba needs to push on. He needs to stop getting those good fifties and getting those hundreds because we know how far it goes with regards to setting up the team.”The bowlers have not been spared either and their lack of incision with the new ball has been under the microscope. “With the ball, there were still a few areas we could fine tune, like maybe making them play a little with the new ball, especially when we are bowling upfront,” Elgar said.Related

Red-hot India look to wrap up series at favourable Wanderers
India’s openers put on 117 and South Africa only took three wickets on the first day before returning to claim 55 for 7 on the third. One of the reasons for South Africa’s slow start may have been personnel related as the most in-form quick Duanne Olivier was not available to play the Boxing Day Test but he is available for the Wanderers. Elgar would not give away much about South Africa’s combination except to say that on a pitch that will offer better balance between bat and ball, they are unlikely to go all-pace.”I am always a fan of having a frontline spin bowler,” Elgar said. “He is someone I can throw the ball to and he can try to bring down the run rate. Keshav [Maharaj] adapts to whatever conditions are put in front of him. I trust that he is a very smart and clever cricketer and having a left-arm spinner bowling to the Indian batters – 10 right-hand batters – is something for us to utilise.”Elgar expects the surface to be far less spicy than the one South Africa prepared for India in 2018, which was rated poor by the ICC for uneven bounce. “The surface will be playing a lot better than it has in recent times. They have a new groundsman in Evan [Flint] and I think he is trying to make it a little bit more batter friendly or a little more of a better cricket wicket that creates good Test cricket. So we have to put our hands up and take ownership of our positions. We’ve been echoing a lot of positivity throughout the group. Hopefully we can adopt the language we have been speaking in the last few days.”

Tottenham Hotspur secured a stunning 4-0 win against champions Manchester City at the Etihad, inflicting yet more pain on boss Pep Guardiola.
The victory was City’s first home defeat in 52 matches, with the three points catapulting Ange Postecoglou’s side back into the Premier League top-four race.
A reaction needed to be seen after the embarrassing 2-1 defeat at home to newly promoted Ipswich Town before the international break, with yesterday’s performance way better than any supporter could have ever envisaged.
James Maddison scores for Tottenham
A double from James Maddison, followed by two strikes from former City talent Pedro Porro and a late finish from substitute Brennan Johnson secured three vital points for the Lilywhites.
The meeting in Manchester is evidence that Postecoglou and his side are more than capable of producing stellar displays that many teams in the division wouldn’t be able to contain – but it’s crucial that they build on the performance and start to produce it on a consistent basis.
Spurs’ star performers against City
Birthday boy Maddison grabbed his fourth and fifth goals of the league season during the win, starting the campaign with a point to prove after an injury-hit 2023/24.
The Englishman has already bettered his tally from the previous year, currently sitting as the club’s joint-top league scorer in the opening months of 2024/25.
Maddison won nine of the 12 duels that he contested during the encounter, whilst completing 100% of the dribbles that he attempted and scoring with both of his efforts on target.
Captain Heung-min Son has been on the comeback trail after his recent injury, still yet to recapture his excellent form from last season that saw the South Korean notch 17 goals in all competitions last season.
In the win, the 32-year-old only managed a single effort on goal, losing possession 15 times before being replaced by the goalscorer of the fourth, Johnson.
He also failed to complete any of his attempted dribbles during the triumph at the Etihad, ultimately failing to play any real part in the unlikely victory.
As a result, one other current Spurs first-team member may have potentially overtaken the fan-favourite in terms of importance under Ange, with the star producing yet another sensational performance last night.

Sweden international Dejan Kulusevski has often featured in a more central role for Spurs this season, often partnering Maddison at the heart of the wide during the early stages of the campaign.
However, with Pape Matar Sarr earning a recall for the meeting with Guardiola’s men, the 24-year-old shifted to a more natural right-sided role – one in which he excelled once again.
Kulusevski registered the assist for the opener, playing a peach of a pass into Maddison, who managed to fire home past the helpless Ederson.
He also completed all four of his attempted dribbles, making light work of full-back Josko Gvardiol, who has been one of the most impressive defenders in the division in recent months.

Despite not registering the assist for Porro’s superb strike, he played an influential role in finding Dominic Solanke, who subsequently set the ball into the path of the Spaniard before he fired home.
As a result of his stellar display in Manchester, the Swede was handed a 9/10 match rating by The Express’ Alex Turk – the highest of any player apart from his two-goal teammate.
It’s been an impressive start to the season for Kulusevski, registering two goals and six assists in his first 18 outings in all competitions – offering that attacking threat for Postecoglou in the final third.
He’s become a reliable figure for the Lilywhites, often the go-to man for creativity, potentially making him a star for many years to come in North London and one that can replace Son as the club’s golden boy.
