Mohammad Wasim Jr in line for Test debut as Pakistan ponder five-man attack

Three quicks and two spinners in prospect, but stiff challenge could await debutant at No.7

Pakistan are seriously considering giving a Test debut to Mohammad Wasim Jr at Rawalpindi, potentially as part of a five-man bowling attack. The home side’s preparations for the first Test of the historic series against Australia – the tourists’ first in the country since 1998-99 – have been hit badly by the enforced withdrawals of Faheem Ashraf and Hasan Ali through injury. The pair were central to Pakistan’s Test side last year, Hasan as a frontline pacer (who was third-highest Test wicket-taker of the year) and Faheem as the allrounder Pakistan have needed for years.Their absence, along with that of Haris Rauf, who tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday, means Pakistan have been forced to call up Iftikhar Ahmed and Wasim Jr to the squad, as well as Naseem Shah who was in the reserves. And now, just over a day out from the Test, the suggestion in the Pakistan camp seems to be that they might play three fast bowlers – Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem and Wasim Jr – as well as both Nauman Ali and Sajid Khan as the spinners. The problem for Pakistan is that Faheem’s absence in particular upsets their Test balance, depriving them of a genuine two-in-one player. At No.7 he has often stalled collapses or built on middle-order work – only seven times in 19 innings has he failed to make at least 20 – while as a fifth bowler he has provided respite to the leaders of Pakistan’s attack, keeping a tight rein on run-rates and picking up crucial wickets: in 13 out of 23 innings, he has picked up at least one wicket and his overall economy is 2.9.Iftikhar’s initial call-up suggested Pakistan might lean on his off-spin as a part-time option, while bolstering the batting with him at No.7 – he has a first-class average of 40.34.However, the nature of the Rawalpindi pitch is probably playing into the three-quicks option. Though it has tended to favour seam bowling, the pitch for this Test, until Wednesday at least, looked fairly dry with little grass. Nathan Lyon likened it to the kind of UAE surface on which Australia have played four Tests against Pakistan in recent years – runs over the initial period, before some spin and reverse comes into play. That – as well as Australia’s susceptibility to spin in the subcontinent – explains why Pakistan want to play both Nauman and Sajid. The trade-off then is whether they choose to beef up their batting – with Iftikhar – or their pace attack. At the moment they appear to be leaning towards the latter.Related

Whatever the conditions Wasim Jr’s inexperience in longer-format cricket represents somewhat of a risk. He has only played seven first-class matches to date, though his performances in those Quaid-e-Azam trophy games have been promising. It also means that all three fast bowlers are genuinely quick, which, given what the surface looks like, might be important. And yet, though Wasim Jr is a promising hitter in T20 cricket, batting at No. 7 in a Test – where he will likely play if he debuts – against one of the world’s best bowling attacks will be an examination unlike any he has faced. In the absence of Abid Ali, Pakistan will already be trying a new opening combination, with either Shan Masood or Imam-ul-Haq partnering Abdullah Shafique, who himself has only played two Tests. That puts a burden on a middle order made up of an ageing Azhar Ali, Babar Azam without a Test century in two years and 18 innings (averaging 38), and the engine room of Fawad Alam and Mohammad Rizwan.

Injured Suryakumar may miss Mumbai Indians season opener

“We are trying to get him here as soon as possible once we have the clearance from NCA” – Rohit Sharma

Suryakumar Yadav was retained by Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2022•BCCI

Suryakumar Yadav is set to miss to Mumbai Indians’ opening match of the IPL, which will be against Delhi Capitals on March 27. ESPNcricinfo has learned that the 31-year-old, who picked up a hairline fracture on his thumb on February 22 in the final match of the T20 series against West Indies, is yet to be released by the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, where he has been in rehab for the past few weeks.”Surya is at NCA at the moment. He is recovering well. He’ll be here soon. I can’t give his availability right now, whether he will be available for the first game or not. But, yeah, we are trying to get him here as soon as possible once we have the clearance from NCA,” Mumbai’s captain Rohit Sharma said.Suryakumar’s absence is a significant loss for Mumbai, who have no other specialist Indian international in their batting order apart from captain Rohit Sharma and the biggest buy of the February auction Ishan Kishan.Since he was bought in 2019, Suryakumar has played a pivotal role as a top-order batter for Mumbai. While the five-time champions failed to make the knockouts last season, Suryakumar continued to flourish. He was their second-leading run-scorer with a tally of 317 at a strike rate of 143.43 and an average of 22. With his ability to float around the batting order, and, importantly accelerate from the time he arrives to the crease, Suryakumar has become a key batter for both Mumbai and India. It is likely that Mumbai will be forced to consider the pair of cousins – Ramandeep Singh and Anmolpreet Singh – to replace Suryakumar while he is unavailable. Uncapped Hyderabad batter Tilak Varma is favourite to play at No. 3.

Club in financial chaos may sell defender to Celtic for just £2m in January

Celtic could be set to capatilise on one club’s financial woes by landing one of their players for a bargain price in January, according to reports.

Celtic transfer news

Celtic’s Scottish Premiership campaign has gotten off to an outstanding start, with Brendan Rodgers’ team winning 14 games and drawing one out of their first 15 matches. Despite their good form, the Hoops are still reportedly looking at ways to bolster their squad in January.

Recent reports suggest that the club have taken the lead in the race for Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, edging ahead of Serie A giants AC Milan in the competition for his signature. Veteran Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen has also been linked with a surprise move to Celtic Park, with Rodgers keen to add some European experience to his squad.

Eriksen is out of contract at Old Trafford next summer, so is currently set to be available on a Bosman at the end of the season, when a move is more likely.

The Dane’s current £150,000 weekly wage, however, would likely be a huge stumbling block in any potential move to Celtic. The Scottish club’s current highest-earner, captain Callum McGregor, earns merely a quarter of that with reported wages of £37,000-per-week.

Celtic eyeing move for Jonjoe Kenny

Another player reportedly on Celtic’s radar is former defender and current Hertha Berlin star Jonjoe Kenny. According to Sport Bild, via SportsWitness, the Hoops are keen on bringing Kenny back to Celtic Park, where he had a loan spell in 2021, after the New Year.

The report claims Celtic are “keen” on Kenny and are ahead of also-interested Bournemouth in the proposed chase for the 27-year-old defender, who joined Hertha from Everton in 2022.

Bild also states that with Hertha now in the German second division, having been relegated in 2023, Kenny wants to play top flight football and is eyeing a move away from the Olympiastadion Berlin, while Hertha are also open to selling him because of their precarious financial situation. The club has debts of around £75 million and “urgently need” funds, according to Bild, so could let Kenny go for as little as £2 million.

Kenny’s loan spell at Celtic three years ago was difficult. The Englishman struggled for form, most notably scoring an own-goal in the Old Firm derby against Rangers, making just 15 appearances before being shipped back to Everton.

Opening up on his time in the Scottish capital, Kenny told EvertonTV, via The Celtic Way, that off-the-field problems contributed to his poor displays.

“Celtic was a difficult period for me, off the pitch, especially,” he explained. “But having close family and friends and my agent and good mentors around me, and choosing that path and having these people who can really help me progress, changed a lot of things for me mentally.

“I have had a lot of ups and downs but it is about staying at it and doing what I need and focusing on me.”

Shaheen Shah Afridi will fly home to Pakistan ahead of schedule to prepare for Pakistan’s white-ball series against West Indies in June, after being rested from Middlesex’s latest LV= Championship match against Nottinghamshire at Lord’s.Afridi, whose 14 wickets at 25.42 have been instrumental in Middlesex’s table-topping start to the season, had been due to leave for his international commitments in early June, but the club confirmed they had reached an agreement to give him an extended break to spend time with friends and family. He will return to England for the latter stages of the Vitality Blast at the end of next month.”We have thoroughly enjoyed having Shaheen here with us at Lord’s for the last month,” Alan Coleman, Middlesex’s head of men’s performance, said. “He has settled into the group really well and has been a real asset for us on the field. It has been a pleasure working with him.””Shaheen has played international cricket in all three forms of the game already this year and came to Middlesex off the back of a busy playing schedule, so we are fully understanding and supportive of his request to go home and recharge ahead of him representing his country.”We look forward to his return in late June, when we hope he will be in a position to make an impactful return to us and help us in our Vitality Blast campaign.” Mohammad Rizwan, Hasan Ali and Mohammad Amir are also sitting out their respective counties’ Championship fixtures this week but Haris Rauf is back for Yorkshire after a side injury.Rauf did not bowl in the second innings of his most recent game and missed Yorkshire’s draw against Essex last week but was named in their XI for the Roses match against Lancashire on Thursday morning. Hasan has been rested.Rizwan is unavailable for Sussex’s fixture away against Leicestershire due to a family bereavement. “The club would like to send our best wishes to Riz and his family at this difficult time,” a statement said.Amir, meanwhile, has a tight hamstring and will miss Gloucestershire’s game against Somerset as a result. “He requires a period of rest after being away from red-ball cricket for a number of years and bowling a large number of overs in a short space of time since joining Gloucestershire,” a club statement said.Gloucestershire confirmed that they are “exploring the potential” to select Amir in their Championship fixtures against Kent and Lancashire when Marcus Harris will be in Sri Lanka with Australia A.Amir was initially signed as a short-term replacement for Naseem Shah after he injured his shoulder on his debut for Gloucestershire, and the club said he would play for their second XI in the coming weeks before returning to the first team during the T20 Blast.Amir’s absence has compounded Gloucestershire’s injury crisis, with Chris Dent, Ben Charlesworth (both foot) and David Payne (ankle) all unavailable this week. As a result, they have brought in three short-term loan signings: Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire, one week), Brad Wheal (Hampshire, two weeks) and Zak Chappell (Nottinghamshire, one month).Chris Woakes remains unavailable for Warwickshire due to what the club called “a niggling knee problem” while Olly Stone is “some way off a first-team return”. Ollie Pope is back in Surrey’s squad after missing their win against Northamptonshire due to illness.Stuart Broad will play for Notts at Lord’s while James Anderson is back in action for Lancashire. His England team-mate Saqib Mahmood misses out, however, despite being named in a 13-man squad.

Celtic could finally sell Palma in move for "mind-boggling" star

Celtic’s superb start to the 2024/25 campaign continued as they lifted their first trophy by winning the League Cup on penalties at Hampden Park on Sunday.

They beat their Glasgow rivals Rangers 5-4 on penalties, after a 3-3 draw in regulation time, and already have one piece of silverware secured for the season.

The Hoops are also nine points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, with 14 wins in 15 matches, and appear to be on course to land a fourth straight league title.

Celtic managerBrendanRodgerscelebrates with the trophy after winning the League Cup

Brendan Rodgers won the top-flight and the SFA Cup in the 2023/24 campaign and has already lifted the only domestic trophy – the League Cup – that he missed out on last term.

His team have also performed well on the European stage. Celtic have only lost one of their six matches in the Champions League and are in the play-off places as it stands.

There are some players in the squad, however, who have not contributed much to the team’s success across all competitions and could be moved on when the January transfer window opens for business next month, including winger Luis Palma.

Why Luis Palma should be sold

It was recently reported by 67HailHail that two teams from the MLS are weighing up whether or not to swoop for the Honduras international ahead of their 2025 campaigns.

Atlanta United and Orlando City are both said to be eyeing up a possible move for the former Aris winger, who has found game time hard to come by at Parkhead this season.

He has only played 98 minutes, across four appearances, in the Premiership so far this term – 20 other players have spent more time on the pitch in the league than Palma within the squad.

The left winger has produced zero goals and zero assists in seven outings in all competitions, in what has been a disappointing follow-up to a fairly decent first season in Scotland.

Although Palma’s form dipped in the second half of the campaign, the forward showed plenty of promise with his displays at the top end of the pitch in the Premiership.

As you can see in the table above, the 24-year-old wizard was far from useless in the top-flight last term, with 16 direct goal contributions in 28 appearances.

Palma showcased his ability to make a big impact at the top end of the pitch, as both a scorer and a creator of goals, and had the ability to score goals out of nothing, as shown in the clip below.

Unfortunately, though, the forward has only scored two goals in the Premiership in 2024 and has found himself near the bottom of the pecking order under Rodgers, with the likes of Hyun-jun Yang, Nicolas Kuhn, James Forrest, and Daizen Maeda ahead of him.

Therefore, Celtic should take advantage of the MLS interest in Palma and brutally ditch him from the squad. However, they should also swoop to sign another attacking midfielder to take his place, amid interest in Chelsea’s Carney Chukwuemeka.

Celtic's interest in Premier League youngster

It was reported by The Boot Room earlier this month that Celtic are one of the clubs that have been offered the opportunity to sign the England youth international in the January transfer window.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The outlet claimed that the Hoops and their Scottish rivals Rangers have both been told that the door is open for them to swoop for the former Aston Villa academy graduate ahead of the second half of the season.

It stated that he is not a part of Enzo Maresca’s plans moving forward and that all parties are working towards an exit next month, as he has also been offered to teams across Europe.

Carney Chukwuemeka

The Boot Room revealed that Chelsea would be open to selling him on a permanent deal, or loaning him out, depending on what offers come in for his services.

Football Insider have since added that Celtic could make a loan move for the attacking midfielder, but that they would need the Premier League side to contribute towards his wages.

Whilst it remains to be seen whether or not the Blues are willing to do that, Rodgers securing a move for Chukwuemeka would allow him to finally cash in on Palma.

Why Celtic should sign Carney Chukwuemeka

It would be somewhat of a gamble by the Hoops because the 21-year-old gem has yet to play regularly at first-team level in his career to date, which means that he would come in as a raw talent with potential, rather than a known quantity.

Celtic are already thriving across all competitions, though, and this means that they can afford to take a short-term risk or two in the transfer market, as they are not in desperate need of guaranteed hits in the January window.

Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka with former boss Graham Potter.

The England U20 international is not an out-and-out left winger, like Palma, but has played on the left flank and as an attacking midfielder in his career, which means that he could provide cover across the frontline, as well as being a central midfield option.

Chukwuemeka’s former teammate James Norris once claimed that the midfield ace is a “a bit like Pogba” and that is backed up by Villa insider Charlie Jennings’ description of his style of play.

He told Sempre Milan: “Carney is an outstanding ball carrier from deep areas of the midfield. He is known for marauding, mind-boggling dribbles through tight areas and compliments this with a delightful array of passes.”

As you can see in the table above, the midfielder showcased his ‘mind-boggling’ dribbling skills in his most recent performance for Chelsea in the Conference League, completing three of his five attempted dribbles.

Chukwuemeka, who has scored 12 goals and produced 14 assists in 76 games as a midfielder in his senior and youth career combined, has shown promise in Europe for the Blues – as shown by his performance against Astana, but is yet to prove himself on a consistent basis.

Celtic must now offer him the chance to come in on loan and show what he can do domestically and in Europe for the Hoops, allowing Rodgers to brutally bin Palma in the process.
