His worst performance in an Arsenal shirt: 4/10 ace was as bad as Havertz

Well, that was just what Arsenal didn’t need.

After absolutely blowing Manchester City away in the Premier League on Sunday, Mikel Arteta’s side went into the second leg of the League Cup semi-final away to Newcastle United optimistic about their chances of overturning their 2-0 deficit.

Instead, the North Londoners wilted in the intense atmosphere and saw the aggregate score extend to 4-0 despite having a couple of chances early on.

There were poor performances across the pitch from the starters, but it would probably be fair to say that two stood out for all the wrong reasons, one of which was Kai Havertz.

Kai Havertz performance vs Newcastle

Yes, instead of ending the game with a brilliantly taken goal and an assist to his name like on Sunday, Havertz came away from St James’ Park empty-handed, with more doubts about his long-term place in this team.

Unlike Alexander Isak at the other end of the pitch, the German international was incredibly ineffective throughout and seemed to be looking for a foul more than a goalscoring opportunity.

Equally unimpressed with the former Chelsea forward was football.london’s Tom Canton, who gave him a 4/10 match rating at full-time, and while that might sound harsh, his statistics from the night suggest it might even be too kind.

For example, in his 94 minutes of action, the Aachen-born forward failed to have a single shot on or off target, failed 100% of his attempted dribbles, completed just 11 passes, failed in 100% of his crosses and long balls, lost eight of 11 duels, committed three fouls, lost the ball 20 times and picked up a yellow card.

In short, it was a shambolic showing from Havertz, and with Isak bossing proceedings for the hosts, another reminder of how badly this team needs a new centre-forward option in the summer.

However, as poor as he was, in an unexpected turn of events, the usually unflappable William Saliba was just as bad.

William Saliba's performance vs Newcastle

Yes, even though Arsenal going out of the competition was always the most likely outcome of the game following on from the first leg, few would have expected Saliba to have looked as lost at sea as he did.

Alongside Gabriel Magalhaes, the French international has been the rock upon which most of the Gunners’ best performances have been built, and even when the team do lose or draw, he usually ends up looking mediocre at worst, but not last night.

Instead, the 23-year-old looked like a deer in headlights and was run ragged by Isak and Anthony Gordon all game, so much so that The Athletic’s Aaron Catterson-Reid justifiably described it as his “worst performance in an Arsenal shirt.”

Tom Canton was just as unimpressed with the Bondy-born star, giving him a 4/10 match rating and writing that it was an ‘uncharacteristic’ showing from him and that he was ‘caught time and time again.’

Once again, it’s an opinion that is more than supported by the player’s dismal statistics, as in 94 minutes, he made an error that led to a shot, lost the ball 11 times, maintained a passing accuracy of just 82%, failed in 100% of his long balls and lost 100% of his ground duels.

Ultimately, it was a bad day at the office for the entire Arsenal team, but it was especially dire for Havertz and Saliba, who now need to bounce back in a big way in the next game.

Bracewell, Santner, Allen set up big win for New Zealand

The hosts pinned down Pakistan to a below-par 130 for 7 to coast home with plenty to spare

On a subcontinental-style pitch in Christchurch, New Zealand’s spin quartet, led by offspinner Michael Bracewell, pinned down Pakistan to a below-par 130 for 7 and set up the hosts’ second successive victory in the tri-series.That Pakistan couldn’t score a single six in their innings summed up the dominance of New Zealand’s spinners. It was the first completed T20I innings in New Zealand a single six in 77 games. Finn Allen, who was picked ahead of Martin Guptill once again, alone hit six sixes during his 42-ball 62 as New Zealand coasted home with plenty to spare.Bracewell, who is more of a batting allrounder for Wellington Firebirds, followed up his 2 for 14 against Bangladesh with an even miserly 2 for 11 on Tuesday. Left-arm fingerspinner Mitchell Santner marked his return from paternity break with 2 for 27 while legspinner Ish Sodhi took 1 for 23. Glenn Phillips also pitched in with an over of part-time offspin as Kane Williamson rifled through his spin options. Thirteen overs were bowled by spinners – the most by New Zealand in a T20I innings – on a day when Trent Boult was rested and Lockie Ferguson and Adam Milne were nursing abdominal injuries.Pakistan start well
Mohammad Rizwan gave Pakistan a jumpstart, picking off three fours in the first two overs. Santner took the new ball upon return but uncharacteristically missed his lengths and lines in his first over which cost New Zealand 11 runs. Then when Blair Tickner, who got a game in place of Boult, darted one on the pads, Babar Azam whipped it firmly over midwicket. Pakistan moved to 24 for 0 in three overs.Spin to win
After having bowled six dots to Rizwan, Bracewell dared him to go over the top by bringing Jimmy Neesham into the circle from long-on. Rizwan swung hard but could not find elevation to clear Neesham at mid-on, falling for 16 off 17 balls. Bracewell then found sharp drift to scratch Babar’s outside edge, which was well held by Devon Conway.Bracewell isn’t a big turner of the ball – there wasn’t big turn on offer either – but with drift and bounce, he ensured Pakistan never got away. He was the only bowler to have not conceded a boundary on the day.Finn Allen brought up a 31-ball half-century•Getty Images

Outside of the powerplay, Santner cut his pace down and drew mis-hits from both Shadab Khan and Shan Masood. Shadab was promoted to No.4 once again – he has excelled as a pinch-hitter for Islamabad United in the PSL – but he holed out to long-on on Tuesday.Pakistan’s middle-order batters then sleepwalked through their innings, going 34 balls without a boundary. Asif Ali and Iftikhar Ahmed ended the drought and hit three fours each, but it was not enough to drag Pakistan to a competitive total. Tim Southee did his bit at the death by dismissing Iftikhar and Mohammad Nawaz off successive balls in the last over.Allen makes his case for the T20 World Cup
With Allen showing explosive power at the top, New Zealand are giving him a decent run, in place of Guptill, in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup. After managing scores of only 13 and 16 earlier in the tri-series, Allen made his case for the T20 World Cup in Australia with a 31-ball half-century on a pitch where most other batters struggled.Allen manufactured scoring opportunities by dashing out of the crease or backing away. He hit full tilt when he launched a six onto the roof of the Hagley Oval. Conway, meanwhile, sat back and complemented Allen by knocking the ball into the gaps.Pakistan, perhaps, missed a trick and made New Zealand’s job easier by holding spin back until the seventh over. And when Shadab finally came into the attack, Allen hoicked him over the leg side for a massive six.By the time Shadab struck to have Allen stumped in the 14th over, New Zealand were just 14 runs away from victory. Conway and Williamson sealed the deal, a result that keeps Bangladesh alive in the tri-series.

Skerritt blames batters in scathing attack after West Indies' T20 World Cup exit

“Untimely shot selections seem to be deeply embedded in the T20 batting culture of our senior team,” the CWI president says

Simmons: Batters need to take a look at themselves

Ricky Skerritt, the Cricket West Indies president, has promised a “thorough postmortem” in a scathing assessment of the team’s early exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup.In a statement posted on CWI’s website and on Twitter, Skerritt laid the blame firmly at the feet of West Indies’ batters, saying their poor shot selection and failure against spin was key to the two-time champions bowing out in the first round of the tournament in Australia.Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Zimbabwe and Ireland – who defeated West Indies by nine wickets on Friday – advanced to the Super 12s with two wins from three matches apiece in the first round.”I am deeply disappointed with the performance results of our team in Australia and I appreciate the sense of utter frustration that is being experienced by many,” Skerritt’s statement said. “The ongoing inability of our batsmen to prevail over opposing slow bowling continued to be an obvious weakness in Australia, and untimely shot selections seem to be deeply embedded in the T20 batting culture of our senior team.”West Indies have lost six of the eight matches they have played in T20 World Cups since their 2016 final triumph in India.Related

Ireland knock out West Indies with commanding victory

In their opening match of this edition, they were bowled out for just 118 chasing 161 against Scotland before managing to defend a modest 153 for 7 against Zimbabwe, thanks to Alzarri Joseph’s 4 for 16 and Jason Holder’s 3 for 12. But Ireland easily overhauled their 146 for 5 on Friday to cruise into the next round. West Indies noticeably struggled against spin through the middle overs in all three of their games.Brandon King’s unbeaten 62 off 48 balls was the sole bright spot of West Indies’ innings against Ireland after they inched their way to 41 for 2 in the powerplay, scoring just five fours and one six in that time. In contrast, Ireland struck six fours and four sixes in the first six overs of their chase.Against Zimbabwe, Johnson Charles – replacing King, who was ill at the time – was West Indies’ top-scorer with 45 off 36 balls, and only four West Indies batters reached double figures against Scotland in a display coach Phil Simmons described as “unprofessional”.Skerritt went on to say that he was determined to find a solution to West Indies’ slide.”I want to assure stakeholders that a thorough postmortem will be carried out on all aspects of our World Cup preparation and performance and that solutions will be found in keeping with CWI’s strategy to improve the quality and sustainability of cricket on all fronts, and in all formats.”West Indies cricket is bigger than any one individual or event and continues to need the input and support of all stakeholders.”

As good as Nwaneri: Arsenal could unleash "insane" teen for the first time

Arsenal have been hit with several huge injury blows in recent weeks that have left Mikel Arteta with little to choose from when selecting his attacking options in matches.

Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, and Gabriel Martinelli are all out injured for the foreseeable future, and the Gunners did not swoop to bring in any reinforcements during the January transfer window.

Whilst it remains to be seen how the London giants will resolve their issue in the number nine position, the emergence of Ethan Nwaneri has helped to deal with the loss of Saka to injury.

Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri celebrates scoring their fifth goal with teammates

The 17-year-old whiz, who turns 18 in March, has emerged as a genuine first-team option for Arteta this season, with some eye-catching performances on the right flank.

Ethan Nwaneri's emergence this season

Nwaneri made his Premier League debut at the age of 15 years and 181 days against Brentford in September 2022, which made him the youngest player in the history of the division.

Two seasons later the England U19 international has become a regular in the senior set-up. He has made 24 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions this season, including 15 outings in the top-flight.

As you can see in the table above, Nwaneri has produced four direct goal contributions in four starts in the Premier League, with his latest being an assist for Mikel Merino in the 2-0 win over Leicester at the weekend.

The teenage sensation, who has scored seven goals in all competitions, may soon have another incredible teenage talent alongside him in the first-team, as Arsenal have 15-year-old Max Dowman rapidly rising through the ranks.

Arsenal could hit gold with Max Dowman

Arteta, as he already has with Nwaneri, could hit the jackpot by unearthing the young attacking midfielder in the coming seasons, as he is emerging as an incredible prospect who could be as good as the current first-team academy graduate.

Back in November, Fabrizio Romano reported that the then-14-year-old was already training with the first-team at Arsenal, and that the club consider him to be a “huge” talent.

In the same month, analyst Ben Mattinson claimed that Dowman has stood out at U19 and U21 level, despite his incredibly young age, and described his talent as “insane”, whilst he added that it would not be a surprise for him to make his debut this season and beat Nwaneri’s Premier League record.

The 15-year-old starlet has already made his U21 debut and has racked up three goals and two assists in eight appearances for the U18s this season, which shows that the youngster is starring well above his age bracket.

Dowman is shining in the academy and has clearly caught Arteta’s attention, hence why he has been in first-team training as young as 14, which is why he could be as big of a talent as Nwaneri, who has emerged in the senior set-up at the age of 17.

Arsenal now make contact for "composed" £50m striker with 20 league goals

The Gunners have made the first move to sign a striker who is the top scorer in his league this season.

ByDominic Lund Feb 16, 2025

It is now down to the manager to plot the perfect pathway to the first-team for the left-footed playmaker, who is yet to make his senior bow, to ensure that the club can strike gold with the teenage ace, who could eventually become a regular for the Spanish tactician in the future.

Kohli becomes the highest run-scorer in men's T20 World Cups

India batter breaks Mahela Jayawardene’s record of 1016 runs

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Nov-2022

Virat Kohli has become the all-time leading run-scorer in men’s T20 World Cups, overtaking Mahela Jayawardene’s record of 1016 runs, which was set in 2014.Kohli broke the record during India’s fourth group 2 game against Bangladesh in Adelaide, and he passed the milestone with an average of more than 80 and a strike rate of more than 130 in T20 World Cups. The run that took him past Jayawardene came off the 13th ball he faced on Wednesday, in the seventh over of India’s innings, when he flicked Taskin Ahmed to midwicket for a single.

Playing in his fifth T20 World Cup, Kohli became the competition’s highest run-getter in only his 23rd innings, having scored 12 half-centuries. In comparison, Jayawardene had played 31 innings to set his record, though he faced fewer balls (754 balls) than Kohli did (773).Kohli scored 185 runs in his maiden T20 World Cup in 2012; he was the competition’s top-scorer in 2014; and the second highest run-getter in 2016. Kohli was adjudged the Player of the Tournament in the 2014 and 2016 editions, making him the only male cricketer to win the award twice. His six Player-of-the-Match awards are also the most in the tournament’s history.Kohli began the 2022 T20 World Cup on 845 runs and scored two consecutive unbeaten half-centuries – against Pakistan and Netherlands – before being dismissed for 12 against South Africa. Those performances took him past Tillakaratne Dilshan (897), Rohit Sharma (904) and Chris Gayle (965) into second position on the list of all-time run-scorers in the T20 World Cup, before he overtook Jayawardene during the game against Bangladesh.Kohli also holds the record for being the highest run-scorer in all T20 internationals, and is ahead of Rohit, Martin Guptill, Babar Azam and Paul Stirling on the list. Kohli is approaching the 4000-run milestone in T20Is, and averages more than 50 with strike rate of nearly 140.

Blackburn learn compensation fee to appoint 44 y/o as Eustace’s replacement

Blackburn Rovers are now aware of how much it will cost to take a League One manager out of his current job and bring him to Ewood Park, according to a reliable reporter.

Sacked managers 2024/25: Every managerial casualty this season

Here’s every manager who’s been on the chopping block in England’s top four leagues since the start of the campaign.

ByBarney Lane May 6, 2025 Blackburn manager latest

It was announced in the middle of last week that John Eustace had left his role as Blackburn boss to become the new Derby County manager. It was a decision that came as a surprise to many, but since his departure, the Lancashire side have won back-to-back games, beating West Brom and Plymouth Argyle by 2-0 scorelines.

Interim boss David Lowe has done an excellent job at keeping Blackburn’s play-off hopes alive, but it is likely that a new manager will be brought into the club as they look to build on Eustace’s success.

There have already been a few names linked to the vacancy at Ewood Park, with Carlos Carvalhal, Aitor Karanka, Raphael Wicky, and George Boateng all being mentioned as possible candidates.

Meanwhile, former Wolves manager Gary O’Neil has also been added to the Championship side’s shortlist, as he’s been out of work for a couple of months since leaving Molineux.

As well as O’Neil, Leyton Orient manager Richie Wellens has been added to the managerial shortlist after continuing to impress in the third tier.

Blackburn learn compensation fee to appoint 44 y/o

Now, according to reporter Alan Nixon, as relayed by Football League World, Blackburn have learned that it will cost them £250,000 to get Wellens out of Leyton Orient and into the hot seat at Ewood Park.

The 44-year-old, who likes his sides to play in a 4-2-3-1 formation, joined Orient in March 2022 and has since taken charge of 153 games at the club, guiding them to promotion in his first full season, and they are now in a fight for a play-off spot in League One.

It is unclear how interested Blackburn are in appointing Wellens as their next manager, but the fee certainly suggests Orient are in no mood to hand him over on the cheap as they seek a spot in the Championship.

Nixon added that Rovers are stepping up their search for a new manager this week, with them set to speak to candidates as they try to get an appointment in place for their game against Swansea City next Saturday.

After 30 games in League One this season, Wellens has guided Orient to 15 wins and 5 draws.
