Khushdil, Warner help Kings seal last-over thriller

Warner top-scored with 60 while Khushdil chipped in both bat and ball for Kings

David Warner and Khushdil Shah played crucial knocks•PSL

Karachi Kings sealed a thrilling final-over two-wicket victory over Peshawar Zalmi in the last game at their home venue this tournament. A half-century from David Warner held the innings together through a chase of 149, but a stumble towards the end threatened to see them fall at the final hurdle. However,Khushdil Shah and Hasan Ali held their nerve at the death as a pair of boundaries in the final over sealed a morale-boosting win over Babar Azam’s side.Zalmi’s best bowler Luke Wood set the tone in defence of the target when he cleaned Tim Seifert up first ball, following it up with the removal of James Vince in his second over. Teenage quick Ali Raza picked up the baton, knocking back fellow emerging player Saad Baig’s leg stump when he tried to scoop him over fine leg. But untidiness from the bowling and a gritty innings from Warner kept Kings’ asking rate on track in the powerplay. The following five overs saw Zalmi apply the brakes; only 24 came between the seventh and 11th overs, but Kings struggled free of their shackles over the next three overs as Warner and Mohammad Nabi cut loose. Warner went after Saim Ayub and Raza, picking up four boundaries in those two overs while Nabi slapped Ayub for six over extra cover and Ariq Yaqoob for another boundary before his cameo came to an end.The equation, though, had shifted dramatically in Kings’ favour. With 44 required off six, they could afford more conservatism, at least while Warner, now unbeaten past a half-century, was still around. But when a slower delivery from Wood castled him for 60 off 47, Zalmi’s hopes were freshly renewed. Abbas Afridi and Aamer Jamal fell within three balls of each other, and the final over saw Karachi requiring an awkward nine to get with just two wickets in hand. However, Zalmi had bowled out all their specialists by now; they were reluctant to hand Ayub the final over. The part-time medium pace of Hussain Talat was trusted, but then easily dispatched by a boundary each from Khushdil and Hasan as Kings scratched out a victory that should have come much easier to them.Kings were well on top in the first innings. A stingy start brought about Ayub’s dismissal at Mir Hamza’s hands for four off eight, and Babar was in all sorts of trouble. He had been reprieved twice, once when an lbw was overturned off the second delivery, and also after Hamza put down a straightforward chance off his own bowling.Khushdil enjoyed a fruitful day with the ball, the tone set when he came back from a Tom Kohler-Cadmore six off to draw a miscue off the next ball. Babar and Mohammad Haris produced a gritty partnership that stopped the rot but didn’t especially pick up the run rate, and off the final ball of the tenth over, Khushdil struck to end Babar’s workmanlike innings. This time the review didn’t reprieve him after he was struck in front; he had faced 41 off the first 60 balls, and scored 46 of Zalmi’s 67.Haris picked up the rate but couldn’t quite produce his explosive best, and fell at a crucial time just as Zalmi were gearing up for the death. His 21-ball 28 had pushed the run rate past seven, and though a cameo from Alzarri Joseph got their side close to 150, Kings ensured they did just enough in each innings to come away with the two points they deserved.

Sam Curran leads Surrey rearguard, Jamie Porter five-for in vain

Rain delays and stubborn batting combine to deny Essex on final day

Sam Curran added 77 to a first-innings 70, in his first red-ball appearance since last September, as Surrey saw out a rain-hit final day on 289 for 7 to secure a draw against Essex at the Kia Oval.Curran’s 121-ball effort held Surrey’s batting together as seamer Jamie Porter and offspinner Simon Harmer threatened to bowl Essex to a second Rothesay County Championship win of the season.Six separate rain interruptions during Monday – all of them short, but lopping 20 overs in all from the final day’s allocation – did not help Essex’s cause. In the end, a 51-run stand between Jamie Overton and Jordan Clark proved decisive.Overton stayed just over two hours for his 47 from 102 balls, edging Porter to third slip just before 6pm from what became the last ball of the game. Clark finished 23 not out.Porter finished with 5 for 88 from 27 overs and Harmer 2 for 94 from 34 with Essex taking 11 points from the draw and Surrey, who stay second in the Division One table, 12.After the fifth rain delay Essex thought they had 14 overs – including seven with a second new ball – in which to take the last four Surrey wickets, but after eight balls yet another heavy shower ultimately reduced that equation by four more overs.Surrey had started the day on 32 without loss, having been set an unlikely 418 in the fourth innings after Essex, led by centuries from Paul Walter and 20-year-old Charlie Allison on days two and three, had reached 479 in their own second innings.Rory Burns and Dom Sibley, Surrey’s openers, were fluent early on against Essex’s seamers and took their stand to 76 before Harmer made the breakthrough with the first ball of his third over of the morning.Left-hander Burns, on 39, jumped out to drive but was beaten by appreciable spin and bounce out of the bowlers’ footmarks and superbly stumped by Michael Pepper, who had to bring the ball down from almost shoulder height.Sibley, having reached 40 with some excellent strokes down the ground, was similarly deceived by Harmer. The South Africa Test spinner, seeing Sibley advance from his crease, tossed the ball a bit wider to leave the former England man groping for it and Pepper to complete a far simpler stumping. At lunch, with only one over at that stage lost to a sharp mid-session shower, Surrey had stabilised the innings at 142 for 2 through Australian left-hander Kurtis Patterson and Curran, who got off the mark in spectacular style by hooking Porter for six over deep square leg.Another shower delayed the restart by ten minutes and, in the afternoon’s second over Patterson was beaten by a break-back from Porter, operating from around the wicket, and bowled off a thin inside edge for 40.Curran square cut Porter for four and also punched Harmer through mid-on for another boundary but Surrey’s faint hopes of chasing down their distant win target fell away when Porter removed Ben Foakes and Jason Roy in the space of three balls to leave the home side 167 for 5.Nibbling the ball away from the right-handers, at just on and outside off stump, Porter first had Foakes caught behind for 7 before Roy was superbly held, low and left-handed, by a diving Harmer at second slip. It completed an unhappy pair for former England one-day opener Roy.In between further showers, Curran and Overton steadied Surrey once again in a sixth-wicket partnership that eventually realised 77 in 24 overs.Curran, on 76, survived an impassioned appeal for a low leg-side catch behind the wicket off Porter that may not have carried. But, later in an eventful over and one ball after Overton had looked fortunate not to be given leg-before as he moved across his stumps, Allison flung himself to his left at point to clutch a Curran square drive and give Essex renewed hope with Surrey now 244 for 6.Only eight more balls were possible, however, before more rain arrived and after another subsequent delay the final mini-session of play saw Essex crowding the bat in vain while Surrey’s seventh-wicket pair kept out Porter and Harmer – until Overton fell with the draw assured.

Leeds have secured "one of the best signings in the PL" & it's not Stach

The last time Leeds United sealed promotion to the Premier League courtesy of former Elland Road icon Marcelo Bielsa, there was a lot of promise in the air that the Uruguayan would be the transformative figure to make the West Yorkshire side a top-flight staple once more.

In all fairness, for a brief moment in time, he looked to be just the radical figure they needed, with a ninth-place finish in the Premier League coming right after the Championship title had been triumphantly lifted.

Unfortunately, it all unravelled from this point onwards, with relegation at the end of the 2022/23 season coming about with Sam Allardyce at the helm, long after the South American’s sad exit.

Can Daniel Farke be the manager to finally establish Leeds as a superpower in the top league? The German has already collected two early wins to guide the Whites to a promising 11th spot, after all.

It appears as if Leeds have really strengthened their options after lifting the second-tier title on a mammoth 100 points, with Farke already in love with a vast portion of his new personnel.

Ranking Leeds' best summer signings

Farke will be desperate to steer Leeds to safety having already tasted the bitterness of relegation from the top-flight when managing Norwich City.

The early signs show that the Whites won’t be basement dwellers, with new signings such as Gabriel Gudmundsson, surely too good to be sucked into a relegation battle.

Minus scoring an own-goal away at Fulham, the energetic Swede has stood out as a very competent replacement for Junior Firpo in the infancy of this season so far, with his determination to keep the ball in play last time out against AFC Bournemouth culminating in Leeds taking the lead.

While he couldn’t follow up on his goal away at Wolverhampton Wanderers versus the Cherries, Noah Okafor also shone as a bright attacking spark against Andoni Iraola’s men.

He will likely be viewed as another sterling summer pick-up, with a tricky three successful dribbles being registered, keeping the South Coast visitors on their toes.

There is also Dominic Calvert-Lewin. He won’t be the best signing Leeds ever make but Premier League-proven, he has shown flashes of his quality at this level already when expertly heading an effort home at Molineux.

But, Anton Stach has a convincing case to be viewed as Leeds’ top bit of business overall, with the £17m forked out to land the German already looking like money well spent.

Why Stach has become so important for Leeds

Stach had impressed early on at Elland Road, but he truly arrived on the scene in some style when hammering home a stunning free kick away at Vitor Pereira’s Old Gold.

Away from just this audacious effort – which was heralded as a “beauty” by Gary Lineker – Stach has also stood out as a well-rounded, aggressive presence in the middle of the park for Leeds in a similar build to fan favourite, Yorkshire Pirlo, Kalvin Phillips.

Of course, when Phillips was at the heart of the Bielsa operation, Leeds managed to finish in that aforementioned ninth spot in the challenging division.

History could well repeat itself with a similarly robust, yet skilful figure now in Farke’s XI, with 3.7 ball recoveries averaged per game this season in Premier League action, followed up by the former Hoffenheim ace also winning a high 5.3 duels per clash.

Former Watford striker turned pundit Troy Deeney has also waxed lyrical about Stach since his arrival, labelling the number 18 as “very impressive”.

But, he isn’t the only midfielder who has been on the receiving end of some glowing comments.

Why bargain Leeds star is a better signing than Stach

While Stach instantly bedding in will, of course, raised a few smiles in West Yorkshire, it would have been seen as a big disappointment if the German didn’t come in and hit the ground running from the get-go, having cost £17m to obtain.

Whereas, in the case of Sean Longstaff, Leeds fans would have known all about his Premier League credentials, but might well have erred on the side of caution over whether he’d be an instant success story, having arrived at Elland Road off the back of starting just eight league games last season for Newcastle United.

There needn’t have been any worries, however, with Nedem Onuoha’s prediction of Longstaff joining for just £12m being a “sneaky good” signing ringing very much true, with the former Magpies midfielder pretty much faultless last time out versus Bournemouth.

During that clash, he looked like one “one of the best signings in the Premier League” full stop – as was boldly declared by journalist Daniel Storey.

Staggeringly, away from firing home a superb effort and collecting an assist, the well-rounded 27-year-old also won a mammoth ten duels to ensure his side at least collected a share of the points against the Cherries.

His wider numbers make for some unbelievable reading, too, with Opta statistician Jonny Cooper revealing – after his impactful showing against Bournemouth – that Longstaff has covered a staggering 12km per league clash so far this season.

Also averaging more tackles per 90 minutes this season than Chelsea ace Moises Caicedo as per Fotmob – who once cost a staggering £115m – on top of also averaging more accurate passes than the likes of Crystal Palace favourite Adam Wharton, it’s already abundantly clear that Farke and Co have pulled off a major steal landing the Newcastle-born battler for just £12m.

Weighing up his modest fee next to Leeds’ other notable summer signings further reinforces the bargain Leeds have managed to seal, with injury-stricken goalkeeper Lucas Perri even costing a higher fee at the £15.6m mark.

Therefore, there is plenty of logic behind Storey’s claims, with Longstaff once even receiving praise from Pep Guardiola back in 2019 during the early days of his St James’ Park senior career.

While his time on Tyneside did unfortunately fizzle out, the “outstanding” 27-year-old – as he has already been labelled by his new manager – has undoubtedly already found a new lease of life away from his hometown side.

Longstaff is just one cog in Farke’s machine who can certainly play a key role in Leeds becoming top-flight regulars again.

Leeds had the original Gudmundsson & they let him leave for just £1m

Leeds must regret cashing in on this star who was the original Gabriel Gudmundsson at Elland Road.

Patidar resumes batting as he recovers from finger injury

Patidar batted for over 30 minutes in the nets but didn’t field or take catches

Shashank Kishore15-May-20253:57

Who should replace Padikkal in the RCB line-up?

Rajat Patidar, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain, has resumed batting following a recovery from a finger injury on his right hand that needed ten days to heel. He had picked up the injury while fielding against Chennai Super Kings on May 3.Patidar started with mild throwdowns before testing his entire range of batting movements as RCB resumed training on Thursday evening, two days ahead of their clash against KKR. With a little bit of taping, he strode out to the nets and batted for over 30 minutes, seemingly unhindered by the right hand. Patidar didn’t, however, field or take catches. If Patidar is deemed fit to play, it will come as a massive boost for RCB in their quest to finish in the top-two. RCB are currently second on the points table with eight wins in 11 games, and need at least two wins to assure themselves of a top-two finish – something they’ve never achieved since 2016.Related

RCB replace injured Padikkal with Agarwal

Patidar’s availability will also somewhat cover up for Devdutt Padikkal’s absence at No. 3. The left-hander has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament with a hamstring injury, with the franchise bringing in Mayank Agarwal, primarily an opener, as his replacement. They also won’t have the services of Jacob Bethell for the playoffs due to international commitments.Patidar’s form has somewhat tailed off after a sensational start – 23 is his highest score across his last five innings. So far this season, his first as captain, Patidar has hit 239 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 140.58. His most-recent half-century, a 32-ball 64 in a winning cause against Mumbai Indians, came more than a month ago.

Celtic predicted line-up vs Motherwell as Rodgers forgets Braga loss with four changes

Celtic return to Scottish Premiership action on Sunday as they welcome Motherwell to Parkhead after suffering the disappointment of a defeat at the hands of Braga in the Europa League.

In what turned out to be a bleak night, the Bhoys failed to turn up and Brendan Rodgers will feel a sense of frustration at the way matters panned out, especially after Kelechi Iheanacho’s controversial disallowed goal that was overturned by VAR.

Celtic’s last five results – a cause for concern?

Celtic 0-2 Braga

Celtic 0-0 Hibernian

Crvena Zvedza 1-1 Celtic

Partick Thistle 0-4 Celtic

Kilmarnock 1-2 Celtic

Either way, the focus turns back to league duty and even at an early stage, their encounter against the Steelmen feels like a match that will arrive in must-win territory as a disgruntled fanbase continue to vocalise their discontent with matters on and off the field.

Claiming three points will be the only option to quell some of that anger, so with that in mind, who could Rodgers look to start at home to Motherwell?

GK – Kasper Schmeichel

Veteran Denmark international Kasper Schmeichel’s error meant Ricardo Horta opened the scoring for Braga with a long-range strike in Thursday night’s Europa League, leaving some supporters wondering if it is time to grant Viljami Sinisalo a run in the side.

Truthfully, the 38-year-old looked shaky against the Primeira Liga outfit and not for the first time this season. However, Rodgers has always been a big advocate for his talent and experience. He will likely allow the former Leicester City goalkeeper a chance to atone on Sunday.

RB – Anthony Ralston

Colby Donovan started at home to Braga on Thursday in light of his positive emergence from the academy. Nevertheless, he failed to shine on a night where the Hoops were second best.

Anthony Ralston was preferred against Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership last weekend after returning from injury and helped to keep a clean sheet, offering Rodgers a straight swap that may make a degree of sense heading into a must-win fixture.

CB – Cameron Carter-Vickers

Uncharacteristically, Cameron Carter-Vickers was another who fell below his usual lofty standards earlier in the week, though he is too important to drop at an early stage in the season where Celtic are fighting Heart of Midlothian for top spot. Expect him to start.

CB – Liam Scales

Partnering Carter-Vickers, Liam Scales has arguably been Celtic’s best player of the season so far and has barely put a foot wrong in spite of deficiences elsewhere on the pitch.

The Bhoys have only conceded a solitary goal in the Scottish Premiership this campaign, illustrating their resilience, so it feels unlikely that the Irishman would be rested against Motherwell.

Chris Sutton named Celtic legend his "best" ever teammate and as good as Shearer

He was full of praise…

ByTom Cunningham Oct 2, 2025 LB – Marcelo Saracchi

Left-back will be a toss-up between Marcelo Saracchi and Kieran Tierney, and it may be more prudent for the former to start as Rodgers looks to manage Tierney’s fitness.

Coming in on loan from Boca Juniors, Saracchi has been continually impressive when called upon and is establishing himself as a favourite among supporters.

CDM – Callum McGregor

Looking at his performances, Celtic captain Callum McGregor has some room for improvement as the Bhoys’ engine room struggles to find their best collective form. Still, he will be present and is someone you write off at your peril.

CM – Reo Hatate

Reo Hatate is another who has endured an inconsistent start to the season. Putting that aside, his defence-splitting qualities may be needed against an unbeaten Motherwell side on Sunday afternoon.

The Japan international is capable of playing line-breaking passes and takes on an average of 1.3 shots per league game, according to Sofascore, which is something Rodgers will hope to see in action as his side aim to take all three points.

CM – Benjamin Nygren

Luke McCowan, Arne Engels and Paulo Bernardo may be players some supporters will make a case for starting, albeit Benjamin Nygren is hard to look past due to his encouraging numbers from midfield.

Three goals and four assists in his first 12 matches across all competitions is a decent tally, and the Swede will hope to do the damage as Celtic return to domestic endeavours.

RW – Hyunjun Yang

Daizen Maeda has recently featured on the right wing for Celtic, but Rodgers may opt to grant the Japan international a rest in favour of counterpart Hyunjun Yang. With a lack of options at his disposal on that side, the South Korean may be more of a natural fix.

LW – Sebastian Tounekti

The star of the show for Celtic this season, Sebastian Tounekti is someone that Rodgers can’t afford to drop, even if Michel-Ange Balikwisha is waiting in the wings for an opportunity.

Capped three times by Tunisia, he has created six chances in 162 minutes of Scottish Premiership football, making him a nailed-on starter.

ST – Kelechi Iheanacho

Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho has had the ball in the net four times in his opening five games for Celtic. Only two of which have counted, though he has impressed with his link-up play and ability to sniff out opportunities.

With the correct support, he could be the man to seperate the sides at Parkhead and appears to be finding his feet under a familiar face in Rodgers.
