Rafa Benitez should persuade Ashley to part with the cash for this £20m-rated Spanish goal machine

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is once again looking to work miracles this season as he tries to maintain his team’s Premier League status once more.

A turn in form over recent weeks has raised spirits on Tyneside, and now Benitez will be hoping that owner Mike Ashley finally delves into his pockets and backs him during the January transfer window.

The Magpies need new additions, and in order to avoid a relegation dogfight, they are going to need to look at signing a host of new players in the winter window, with proven quality and a desire to play for the club likely to be top of the agenda.

And one man we at the Tavern think could be a brilliant signing is current Espanyol striker Borja Iglesias, who has been in excellent goalscoring form for the La Liga club this season.

Valued at some £20m on Transfermarkt, Borja represents a fairly cheap option given the prices of a lot of strikers in the modern game, and if he could indeed bring his La Liga form to St James’ Park, then Benitez would have quite the player on his hands.

While the likes of Joselu and Ayoze Perez haven’t always flourished for Benitez, he might well be willing to take a punt on another fellow countryman, and Borja might well be his man.

Strong, a handful, and an excellent finisher, the 25-year-old could be a superb signing for Newcastle.

Newcastle fans, what do you think? Good signing? Let us know in the comments!

West Ham and Manchester City: Rare respect in a world of tribalism

In an excerpt from Wray Vamplew’s Pay Up And Play The Game, first published in 1988 (and passed on to me by football historian Gary James), a study reveals that all the way back in 1910 Manchester City and West Ham United had the highest percentage of semi-skilled manual and unskilled manual workers who were shareholders in their club.

These percentages far outweighed those of other clubs who became limited companies during that era, namely Liverpool, Everton, Newcastle, Arsenal and Tottenham. There were others, too, and all had majority shareholders who were ‘proprietors’ or in clerical occupations.

This illustrates that in Edwardian England, West Ham and Manchester City had more working class supporters of any clubs across the land, meaning that even though 200 miles separated the two institutions they were anything but a class apart. Furthermore, there was another key commonality, as supporter Mark Meadowcroft explained to me: “It’s about the culture of Eastern ends of big cities. The sort of people that lived downwind of the factories.”

Fast forward through the decades to May 9th 1987 where the stage is Upton Park and it’s the final game of the season. City were all-but-down prior to kick-off and now relegation is confirmed after a fabulous Hammers side containing the likes of Devonshire and Cottee easily win out 2-0.

Having sung their hearts out for the entirety of the ninety minutes the City supporters now fall silent, contemplating their plight but collectively rouse themselves once again at the sight of the home fans streaming over the advertising hoardings and heading their way. This is 1987 remember and hooliganism is at its peak so the harder lads in the away contingent prepare for battle while the rest resign themselves to a thoroughly miserable end to a thoroughly miserable day. The police too are on full alert as a mass of Hammers assemble.

Only there is no invasion of the away end. Instead the West Ham fans stand on the pitch and sing ‘loyal supporters’ towards their northern counterparts. This is swiftly followed by a rendition of ‘we’ll meet again’ accompanied by applause that is soon warmly reciprocated once confusion abates. Finally there is the fait accompli of bonding anthems as the home fans loudly chant ‘We only hate Man United’.

Stories abound from City fans of how they were well-wished all the way back to the tube station that day and from there forward an affinity was born between each club’s fan-base; an affinity that was always previously present but never really spoken of and certainly not acknowledged; an affinity rooted in their roots.

But let’s not get too hippy-dippy here and suggest that it’s exclusively wine and roses and the rare instance of a wholly harmonious relationship between two rival sets of fans. In amongst the avalanche of positive comments amounting to mutual admiration I received when I brought this subject up online this week, were examples highlighting that animosity still rears its head in the modern era from time to time while you’d have to be frankly insane to relish a trip to Upton Park in the 70s and 80s during the reign of the feared ICF.

Similarly, it would take a Hammer of a certain disposition to enjoy the prospect of navigating the narrow alleyways of Moss Side during the decades when violence was prevalent.

Playmaker FC’s American Soccer Fan give his take on all six ‘field goals’ during West Ham 4-2 Burnley…

Yet it can still be truthfully said that an unusual connection exists between the fan-bases – one founded on respect and an appreciation of their similarities – and crucially it’s a connection that has sustained through not only football’s extreme make-over in recent times but a complete transformation in circumstances for one of the clubs.

We all know what that transformation was and assuming you’ve spent more than a singular passing browse on Twitter you’ll know too how the takeover of Manchester City in 2008 transformed not just their bank balance but their image too. From being commonly viewed as pretty likeable all told and even a second club to casually root for, they are now damned and demeaned at every turn for their nouveau wealth as the tribalism of the terraces switches to social media.

That, however, is anything but the case with West Ham and from a personal perspective as a Blue I’ve lost count of the occasions my timeline has been awash with criticism of my club and just as I’m losing the will to live along comes a solitary tweet beneath an avi of two crossed hammers defending them.

Free from jealousy the tweet will invariably state that City supporters deserve their good fortune after sticking by their team through thick and thin and generations of mediocrity, and invariably too there will be the inclusion of a word, one that is fundamental in explaining why both sets of fans get on. It’s a word that kept on appearing from the hundreds of replies I received from up north and down south this week and that word is ‘proper’.

Proper club. Proper fans. Grounded. Authentic. And the insinuation of course is that other clubs – namely each club’s local rivals – are not so. Instead they are the glitzy media-darlings who kept West Ham and City in shadow as we grew up. They are the ones who attract the day-trippers. They are the ones who inherently possess an arrogance that is unbecoming.

If that is the sharing of demographic there is also a sharing of heroes that exceeds the norm in number. From Malcolm Allison and John Bond being formative in the ‘West Ham Way’ before both going on to manage at Maine Road to Pablo Zabaleta’s warrior-spirit being mutually cherished, there is a long, long list of individuals who have been fortunate enough to experience the two clubs and so naturally with such combined lineage there comes communion.

Regarding our neighbours, an enemy of an enemy is a friend. Regarding the stars who lit up Upton Park, Maine Road, the Etihad and the London Stadium, our values merge.

And that ultimately is what it comes down to when all is said and done: the affinity, mutual respect, call-it-what-you-like between the fan-bases of West Ham and Manchester City is forged on a merging of values. It is like recognising like. It is class recognising class.

Everton would be the perfect home for Nantes striker Emiliano Sala

Everton kept the pace with the Premier League top four following a hard-fought victory against Cardiff City at the weekend.

The Toffees have made a decent start to life under Marco Silva and were faced with a Bluebirds side on the verge of the relegation zone. It took until the second half to find the first and only goal of the game, with Gylfi Sigurdsson finding the back of the net on the hour mark. The win will give Silva confidence heading into the first Merseyside derby of his tenure at Anfield next weekend.

The January transfer window is less than two months away, and Silva will be hoping for similar success in the market. The Portuguese spent wisely during the summer, and is expected to bolster his attacking options with Cenk Tosun struggling for form. Reports suggest the ex-Watford and Hull City boss will target Inter Milan’s Gabriel Barbosa.

Instead, Everton should be making a move for Nantes goal machine Emiliano Sala.

Valued at just £12.6 million by Transfermarkt, the Argentine has been a regular goal scorer in Ligue 1 for a number of years. The 28-year-old has netted double figures for league goals in each of the last three seasons. In the current campaign, he has truly taken his game to the next level, netting an incredible 11 goals in just 13 league appearances so far.

A tall, powerful forward, Sala would have no issues adapting to the physicality of the Premier League. The striker is adept at leading the line, meaning he would slot seamlessly into Silva’s system on Merseyside. Alongside quality players such as Richarlison and Sigurdsson, Sala would have even more ammunition to continue his hot streak in front of goal.

His performances are bound to attract plenty of interest and a national team call-up should also be on the way – Everton need to snap this goal machine as quickly as possible.

Liverpool should switch focus from Llorente to Ajax starlet De Ligt

Last week, Mundo Deportivo reported that Liverpool are interested in signing Real Sociedad defender Diego Llorente, but they should be looking at Ajax youngster Matthijs de Ligt instead.

What’s the word?

For so long, the defence was a problem area for Liverpool, but at the moment it seems to be their biggest strength.

Following Virgil van Dijk’s arrival in January, Jurgen Klopp’s back line has improved significantly.

This season, Joe Gomez has proven that he is a worthy centre-back partner for Van Dijk, which indicates that the club are not in desperate need of a defender.

However, there have been rumours regarding a shift in personnel at the back due to Joel Matip dropping down the pecking order, and a recent report from Mundo Deportivo suggested that Llorente is on the Reds’ radar.

However, if defenders are on Liverpool’s agenda, then they should take a look at Ajax star De Ligt.

Why him?

The Dutchman has been linked to Premier League clubs numerous times in the last few transfer windows.

De Ligt is only 19 years of age, but he is already showing a commanding presence at the back.

This season so far, the centre-back has made 12 Eredivisie appearances and four in the Champions League.

Playmaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

As mentioned, Liverpool are well equipped in defence, but if they are in the market for a fresh talent, then De Ligt would be a smart investment.

Despite already showing his ability at an elite stage, the teenager still has plenty of room for growth, and he would become a mainstay in the Reds’ team for years.

Spurs fans react to Danny Rose’s impressive performance versus Barca

[ad_pod ]

Nervous Spurs fans probably have no nails left to bite after last night’s tense Champions League action – the Lilywhites made it out of Group B on ‘goals for’ alone as they matched PSV’s 1-1 draw with Inter in a great watch at the Nou Camp, meaning that they follow the Catalan giants into the knockout stages.

Lucas Moura’s late leveller was enough to seize the vital point after Ousmane Dembele’s fantastic solo effort in the first half but, while the Brazilian surely stole the headlines for scoring the goal to decide his side’s progression, defender Danny Rose’s performance was a talking point on Twitter.

Tuesday night’s clash was a tale of two full-backs – Rose was excellent, assured on the back foot and dangerous on the front, while Kyle Walker-Peters’ early error allowed Dembele to give the hosts the lead. The former completed a whopping 6 tackles, 3 interceptions and 2 dribbles as he ran rampant down Barca’s right flank.

The England international has not always been viewed so favourably by Spurs fan, however he now appears to be in their good books. Here’s how the White Hart Lane faithful reacted to the 28-year-old’s dynamic display…

Revealed: 88% of polled Bournemouth fans want former Swansea man Jonathan de Guzman at the club

[ad_pod ]

Following the news of Lewis Cook’s season ending injury that will rule him out for up to nine months, Bournemouth will need to sign a replacement in January or risk seeing their season become derailed as their best midfielder sits out.

£25m summer arrival Jefferson Lerma has been outstanding alongside Cook, but isn’t good enough to fill the void left by the 21-year-old alone. Against Liverpool last time out, where the Cherries lost 4-0 at home, Andrew Surman started in Cook’s absence, and failed to cover the sorely missed talents of the England international.

Dan Gosling is next in line behind Surman, and he doesn’t come close to the ability of Cook. In light of all these factors, we asked Bournemouth fans if they’d like to see former Swansea playmaker Jonathan de Guzman arrive on the South Coast.

The Dutchman has enjoyed a resurgence at Eintracht Frankfurt following a botched spell at Napoli, and most Cherries’ fans seem to think he still has the talent to play Premier League football.

A whopping 88% of them who voted want their club to sign the 31-year-old to cover Cook, as shown by the results below…

Leeds fans react to Samuel Saiz to Getafe rumours

[ad_pod ]

According to The Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds’ Samuel Saiz is subject to interest from Getafe CF – the La Liga outfit are keen to take the Spaniard back across the channel in January.

The 27-year-old – a £3m signing from Huesca in 2017 – is apparently desperate to make a return to Spanish football as soon as possible having become unsettled at Elland Road.

Having made 19 Championship appearances for the Peacocks this season, the want-away midfielder has failed to find the net as of yet and has teed up teammates just three times – astonishing considering he netted five and chalked up eight assists last year.

Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa recently criticised the playmaker for his underwhelming performances, saying, “I expect from him the capacity to beat an opponent and I hope he gets this back”.

You can find the best of Leeds fans’ reactions to the rumours below, with many of the belief that Saiz’s exit would not be as catastrophic as first thought…

Opinion: Benjamin Pavard would be the best defensive acquisition since Toby Alderweireld

Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to sign Toby Alderweireld in 2015 has unquestionably been one of his smartest since taking the reigns at Tottenham Hotspur.

The brilliant Belgium international is a gladiatorial presence in central defence, marshalling his fellow defenders and leading by example on an ominously consistent basis.

He is a close contender to rival Virgil Van Dijk for the accolade of the Premier League’s best defender, so it’s no wonder the Spurs supporters are feeling so nervous about his contract situation.

Will he stay or will he go? Only Alderweireld and insiders from the club will know his true intention, but if he does eventually leave Pochettino will need to make a signing which matches the genius of the decision to bring him to north London from Atletico Madrid.

With that said, Pochettino would be wise to turn his attention towards one of the stars of the World Cup, namely Benjamin Pavard.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Pavard has an exit fee in his current contract with Stuggart which will make him available for €35 million (£31.4 million) in the summer of 2019.

If those reports prove to be true, Tottenham simply cannot sleep on an opportunity as mouthwatering as that. Pavard is one of the most promising defenders in world football, boasting an enviable set of physical and technical attributes which would instantly make him a fan favourite at Tottenham.

Spurs haven’t yet managed to sign a defender matching Alderweireld’s calibre since he arrived at the club, partly in consequence of the excellence of Jan Vertonghen in central defence.

Davinson Sanchez may well prove to be as exceptional as Alderweireld in the years to come, but there is something special about Pavard which hints at a future beyond the capabilities of the Colombian.

The 22-year-old Frenchman is versatile, excellent in possession, intelligent and incredibly consistent, so Pochettino must do everything in his power to convince Daniel Levy to open his chequebook for Pavard in an exceptional value for money deal.

Opinion: Tottenham should forget Bowen and swoop for Sunderland’s Maja

Tottenham are being strongly linked with a move for Hull City wonderkid Jarrod Bowen, but the Lilywhites should really be looking at Sunderland striker Josh Maja.

What’s the word?

According to Sky Sports, Tottenham are interest in Bowen, but will have to shell out a whopping £20m to sign the 22 year-old.

Bowen is a fantastic young winger, scoring 11 Championship goals already this season, but it’s hard to see him getting any serious playing time ahead of the likes of Lucas Moura, Dele Alli, Erik Lamela and Son Heung-min.

CheekySport’s Joel claims Spurs badly need to invest in January after not having “the balls” to beat Arsenal. Check out his uncensored opinion in the video below…

Maja meanwhile has scored 15 goals and added two assists for Sunderland this season, and will be out of contract at the end of the season.

This means that Tottenham could scoop a bargain for the League One teenager, and perhaps even sweeten the deal by sending him back to the Stadium of Light on loan for the remainder of the season.

Why do they need him?

Aforementioned, Mauricio Pochettino has countless weapons in his arsenal that can rotate into various attacking positions, but the one attacking position he has almost no depth in is up front.

With Fernando Llorente expected to leave the club this year, one injury to Harry Kane could be absolutely devastating, and Maja has the eye for goal to take some of the pressure off Kane.

The 20 year-old has electric pace, impressive physicality and hold-up play for such a young player, and best of all he just knows how to stick the ball in the back of the net.

His pace and movement will offer something slightly different to Kane, and Pochettino’s incredible record with young, attacking players should be enough to entice him to North London.

The last time the club signed a young goal-getter from League One they ended up with one of England and Europe’s finest attacking talents in Dele Alli, and Maja could follow a similar path if Daniel Levy snaps him up this month.

So, Tottenham fans, would you back a move for Maja? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…

Eriksen’s £224m asking price proves he’s indispensable to Tottenham

[ad_pod ]

According to AS, Tottenham Hotspur have slapped a £224million asking price on midfielder Christian Eriksen. The Denmark international has been heavily linked with a potential move to Real Madrid, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy wants a world-record fee if he is to allow the midfielder to leave the club.

What’s the word?

Spurs are keen to keep Eriksen out of the clutches of Real, having seen the likes of Luka Modric and Gareth Bale swap north London for the Santiago Bernabeu in recent years.

Modric cost Real around £30m, but Bale became the most expensive player in world football when he moved to Spain, as Levy extracted a massive £85m fee from the Liga giants.

And Levy is now reportedly keen to see it broken once again, with Real looking for a player to replace Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric, who turns 34 in September.

It remains to be seen, however, if Real are willing to once again break the world transfer record.

AS claim that Real will only enter into negotiations if Levy lowers his asking price, having told Real two months ago of his demands when an initial enquiry was lodged.

The Independent, however, claim that Real have once again initiated contact with Eriksen, and deem him a “gettable” target.

Levy living up to his reputation

Levy has gained a reputation throughout football for being a hard-nosed negotiator.

Sir Alex Ferguson famously hated dealing with the Spurs chairman, claiming in his book ‘Leading’ that the process of negotiating a deal for Dimitar Berbatov was “more painful than my hip replacement”.

There can be little surprise, then, that Levy is so keen to negotiate such a huge fee for a player who has become integral to the way Spurs play.

Apart from World Cup Golden Boot winner Harry Kane, Eriksen is undoubtedly Spurs’ most important player.

The Dane has scored six goals and provided nine assists throughout the 2018-19 season, with three of those going directly to Kane.

Eriksen presses high, uses the ball well whenever he wins it back and also has an unerring eye for goal, as Real found out to their cost last season; the playmaker scored the third goal in his side’s phenomenal 3-1 thumping of Los Blancos at Wembley.

It is unthinkable that Spurs would allow the player to leave without a fight, and they continue to hold talks with the player over a new contract.

His current deal expires next year, and rather than cash in, Spurs should make his renewal a priority.

They are no longer a club that needs to sell its best players, and keeping Eriksen would have a twofold impact: Spurs retain one of their best players at a time when they are becoming one of the best teams in England, and Levy furthers his reputation as the best negotiator in world football.
