Sunderland fans discuss Bailey Wright’s ankle injury

Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to react after Bailey Wright suffered an ankle injury in the 1-0 win over Oxford on Saturday.

The Australia international – who arrived at the Stadium of Light on loan from Bristol City in January – was making his fifth start for the Black Cats in League One, before he was forced off the field against Oxford having managed to play 84 minutes of the match.

Phil Parkinson’s side have conceded just two goals with Wright in the side, both of which came against Portsmouth as the 27-year-old has developed a fine partnership with Jordan Willis.

However, Parkinson revealed following the full-time whistle that it “doesn’t look good” for the centre-back, confirming that he has suffered damage to his ankle ligaments – there is yet to be a time frame attached to his expected absence.

The blow is a shame for Wright, who was doing so well for the Wearsiders since arriving last month.

Let’s see how the Sunderland fans on Twitter reacted…

To kick off the reaction, both of these supporters labelled Wright’s expected absence as a “massive miss” with J.Simpson saying that “either Ozturk or Lynch has to step up” in light of the incident.

Elsewhere, Ray said he is “gutted” that Wright is injured, as he has been “quality from day one”.

Kingy then said that it comes as a “huge blow” as the backline has looked “so much more organised and composed” since he arrived at the Stadium of Light.

Lastly, @lord_barrold said that it’s a “massive blow” and that Wright has been a “fantastic addition to the XI”.

Then, Kieran made the slightly over-reactive point that promotion is now “out the window”.

Manchester United: Odion Ighalo first goal for Red Devils has many supporters gushing

During Manchester United’s 5-0 victory over Club Brugge at Old Trafford on Thursday evening, many Red Devils supporters took to social media and congratulated loan striker Odion Ighalo on his first goal for the club since arriving on a temporary basis.

Ighalo, who signed from Shanghai Shenhua on loan back in January, has had to wait four games to get his first strike in a United shirt – burying a tap-in from two yards out courtesy of wonderful build up play from Juan Mata and Bruno Fernandes. Goals from Fernandes, Scott McTominay and Fred (2) also added to a dominant scoreline in which United sailed through to the Europa League Last 16. The 30 year-old will be hoping to add to his tally at the weekend when the Red Devils travel to fellow top four chasers Everton – whilst also praying he can help to fill a void left by the injured Marcus Rashford.

Reacting to his first ever United goal, many supporters have been applauding the forward on social media – with one fan claiming they should sign him permanently while another hailed him as a ‘beast’. Here’s what they had to say.

Arsenal: Charles Watts comments on potential date for Arsenal’s cup clash with Sheffield United

Arsenal secured their ticket for the quarter-finals of the FA Cup by eliminating Portsmouth after a rather impressive 2-0 game that was played, and won, by Mikel Arteta’s mixed squad.

Many youngsters featured and the Gunners’ gamble paid off, giving them their ticket for the upcoming clash in the next stage of the revered tournament. At the moment, their date with Sheffield United is scheduled for 21 March but there was some news stating that the match might be moved to Friday, 20 March instead.

And for Charles Watts, that would be an absolute joke of a decision, especially after all the drama surrounding the previous rescheduling of games that happened last Wednesday.

He said as much on his Twitter profile:

The FA Cup has caused quite a lot of trouble for many top-flight teams, Arsenal included, and with yet another change in the schedule, it’s quite easy to understand Watts’ frustration at this point.

Still, all of that could be forgotten if the Gunners were to be successful in the tournament. Only time will tell, though.

Arsenal fans, what do you think about your game with Sheffield United being played on 20 March? Do you share Watts’ frustrations? Let us know in the comments down below!

Alan Pardew’s £3m genius in 2015

Crystal Palace had just survived a Premier League season for the first time in their history thanks to Tony Pulis.

The Welshman took over from Ian Holloway and guided a Championship-looking Eagles squad into 11th place in England’s top-flight.

However, he walked out on the south Londoners just two days before the season opener against Arsenal kicked off, leaving Neil Warnock to steady the ship in his absence.

While the charismatic boss didn’t last until the New Year before Alan Pardew replaced him, one thing he did at Selhurst Park still makes shockwaves to this day – bringing Wilfried Zaha back to the club on loan.

While that set the ball rolling, it was in fact Pardew who completed the £3m capture of the Ivorian on a permanent basis in January 2015, and it is a deal that’s arguably Crystal Palace’s finest Premier League purchase to date.

Ignoring his exploits in the Championship, Zaha leads the way for the Eagles in two Premier League charts.

The 27-year-old – who came through Palace’s academy – has made the most Premier League appearances of any player to play for the club with 192 to his name, meaning that he has cost only £15.6k per appearance in England’s top-flight.

Even more impressively, the winger is Palace’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League with 35 goals to his name, meaning that he has cost the club just £85.7k per Premier League goal – he truly has been a bargain in every sense of the word.

There have been plenty of fine Premier League purchases for the Eagles, notably the £1.6m signing of Attilio Lombardo from Juventus in 1997 and the £10m capture of Yohan Cabaye.

Calling all Eagles fans: Can you get 90% on this quickfire Palace quiz?

However, in terms of longevity and value for money, it is difficult to look beyond Zaha for just £3m as Palace’s best Premier League signing in their history.

In other news, this 2012 Palace addition surely makes Steve Parish proud every time he thinks about it…

Verdict: Should West Ham sign Emiliano Buendia?

Norwich City’s Emiliano Buendia is among the midfielders that West Ham United are holding an interest in, according to football.london.

They are also looking at his teammate Kenny McLean, as well as West Bromwich Albion loanee Matheus Pereira.

The Hammers do already have Pablo Fornals, Manuel Lanzini and Felipe Anderson to act as a creative presence in the midfield, but it seems as though they are looking for more options in this area – or an upgrade on what they have already got.

FFC writers have previously given their thoughts on whether Pereira would make a good signing for the Hammers, and now it is Buendia’s turn to be put under the spotlight.

Verdicts have now been given on whether West Ham should be looking to move for Buendia, look at the other options that are out there, or stick with what they have already got within the club.

Billy Meyers

“If West Ham have any chance to sign Buendia this summer, then Moyes must act.

“The diminutive Argentine finds himself sandwiched between a number of Liverpool and Manchester City players in the Premier League assists charts this term with seven to his name, which is very impressive seeing as he plays for Norwich, who are bottom of the league – it is the fourth-most amount of set-ups in the division.

“The likes of Lanzini, Anderson and Fornals are all good players, but they don’t seem to be built for the Premier League in the way that Buendia is – his stocky nature and upper-body strength make him Carlos Tevez-like.

“Presumably, a whole host of clubs will be chasing the Norwich No.17 this summer when the Canaries go down – if West Ham can be the ones who land him, then they must take that opportunity, for it is too good to turn down.”

Charles Jones

“I think Buendia is exactly the type of player West Ham should be after.

“Picking up players from recently relegated sides has worked a treat in the past, just look at how Andy Robertson and Harry Maguire have got on since leaving Hull City, and Buendia could be the next in a long line of talent to step up after a setback.

“The Argentine has seven assists to his name this season in a struggling Norwich side, and if he was able to play with some of the Hammers’ attacking talent he could work some magic.

“In fact, the addition of the playmaker could actually be the key to unlocking Sebastien Haller’s talent and getting the best out of him.

“The London club would be foolish to pass up on this opportunity.”

Did he really play for us?! No West Ham fan has managed to name all of these obscure Irons signings….

James Beavis

There is no doubting Emilian Buendia’s quality, but why sign him when West Ham already have their own impressive youngster in Grady Diangana who plays in the same position as Buendia does on the right wing?

A report has recently suggested that Irons manager David Moyes will look to build around core of English players from this summer onwards, and the 21-year-old fits the bill perfectly.

Five goals and six assists during a loan spell with West Bromwich Albion this term, before he got injured, show what he is capable of, and it would be silly for David Gold and David Sullivan to go and splash out a potential big fee on the Norwich City man when they already have someone perfectly capable of making the step up on the right-hand side.

The choice should be clear here – stick with Diangana.

Danny Lewis

“West Ham should definitely be looking to bring in another creative talent, as the other options at London Stadium have simply not done enough this term. Fornals has been the best of the lot, but even he hasn’t been fully trusted by Moyes, starting just two of his first eight games in charge.

“It is a close toss-up between Buendia and Pereira as to who the Hammers should be looking to sign, but it has to be the Argentinian, given that he has been producing in the Premier League this term. There is a risk with any signing, but seeing Buendia play such a key role in executing Norwich’s sweeping style of football should be an encouraging sign – even if this has not got them the desired results.

“This is not to suggest that Pereira would be a disappointing signing, as that is far from the case, but Buendia’s profile is exactly what the Hammers should be looking for.”

Meanwhile, FFC has predicted what West Ham’s starting XI would look like if they had got Carlo Ancelotti.

Leeds must sign Jack Harrison after Cross comments

Leeds United loanee Jack Harrison has been making waves at Elland Road this season, so much so that it should be an absolute must to clinch him permanently in the summer…

Calling all FFC readers! Raise money for charities and bring together communities this Saturday the 28th at 3pm by taking part in the #FLYTHEFLAG campaign. Click this banner to find out how you can get involved.

What’s he said?

Reliable Whites scribe Beren Cross has been giving out his reviews of the campaign so far for each member of Marcelo Bielsa’s league-leading side.

There have been many highlights amongst the current Leeds crop; Kalvin Phillips who is touted for homegrown international stardom, and the relentless and durable utility man Stuart Dallas are just two names you could tout for ‘Player of the Season’.

But what about City loan star Harrison? This is what Cross had to say about him in a recent column, he said:

“Eight out of ten.

“Picked up a nine out of 10 in a losing team at Emirates Stadium in January. An outrageous showing against the Premier League’s elite.

“Can still frustrate and go missing, but in the main Harrison has been a tireless, gifted outlet down the left wing for Bielsa’s Leeds.

“Has the engine to do the job of two players and the flair to embarrass opponents. End product is slowly being added to the flicks and tricks.”

Beren Cross, LeedsLive.

£8m bargain

The 23-year-old has been an influential member of Bielsa’s attack, contributing five goals and seven assists from 37 Championship starts, per WhoScored, and he’s also been averaging 2.1 key passes, 1.9 dribbles and 1.7 shots each game this term.

He’s particularly come on leaps and bounds before the suspension to the division, managing a match rating of at least 7.00 in each of his last four outings, the highlight being a 8.97 against Hull City where he ran the show.

Harrison racked up a massive six dribbles, four key passes, three shots and even three interceptions as Leeds won 4-0.

Missing football!? There’s still plenty of Leeds discussion going on in the Vital Leeds Forum! Click here to get involved!

According to the Manchester Evening News, Pep Guardiola’s City are willing to sell the ace for £8m this summer and this is something that Bielsa needs to do, irrespective of the division they find themselves in.

As Cross eludes to, Harrison put in an “outrageous” display against Arsenal in the FA Cup, which only goes to show his possible credentials in the top-flight, thus making him even more of a must in the second tier.

Leeds must do everything in their power to land the winger on a permanent basis ahead of next season – £8m is an absolute snip, considering.

Leeds ace Mateusz Klich reveals club’s big turning point

Speaking to The Yorkshire Evening Post, Mateusz Klich has opened up the moment that really kick-started Leeds’ turnaround.

What did he say?

A 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest had left Leeds with four losses out of five in the Championship, before Marcelo Bielsa’s side clinched a point against Brentford away from home.

Despite not picking up all three points, that result appeared to be the catalyst for the Whites turning things around, with the side going on to win their next five games and not even conceding once.

Now, the £3.15m-rated Klich has revealed that the Brentford clash was the moment they had decided to buck up. He said: “I think the Brentford game. After the Nottingham Forest game we said,‘this is enough,’ and that from the Brentford game we needed to play better. The Brentford game was a perfect game for us, we could have won it and we should have won it.

“After that we showed everyone we are really strong and we can really do it but obviously something has got in our way now.”

Moment to remember

As is often the case when it comes to a long hard-fought season, the individual moments in certain games are the ones players and fans look towards as being the moment things changed either for the better or the worse.

In Leeds’ case, doubts would no doubt have started to creep in after the Forest defeat, with painful memories of missing out on promotion to the Premier League last season still fresh in the memory.

But by digging in and getting in a point against fellow contenders Brentford, Leeds proved they could still be in charge of their own destinies, and if their return to the top-flight is eventually confirmed, it’s a game that people will be pointing to for years to come.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has delivered a Leeds injury update.

Danny Mills responds to Aaron Cresswell’s project restart claim

Former England defender Danny Mills has said that players considerations over project restart are different depending on their paycheque, in an interview with Football Insider.

What did he say?

On Friday, West Ham United left-back Aaron Cresswell bemoaned the lack of consultation over project restart and argued there should be a player poll.

The claims came after it was confirmed the Premier League clubs would meet on Monday to discuss a return to training in a bid to restart the league in June.

However, Mills has claimed that some players may not be able to take the financial hit of not playing football for the foreseeable future.

“It is very, very difficult, conflicting and confusing,” he told Football Insider.

“Some players can take a financial hit if they had to. If they do not feel that they are safe, they could tell their club that they do not want to play and lose two, three, six months wages and that would be fine no matter what. It would not be a big issue.

“However, some players might feel pressured to go back because they cannot afford to risk losing their pay.

“It is ok for the top 5% of Premier League players to say they are not playing because they have the ability to make that choice.

“The further you go down, the harder it becomes to do that. It is so, so complicated.”

Increasing pressure

With the return of German football seemingly avoiding serious incident, the pressure to see the Premier League back in action will only mount.

The point Mills raises about footballers feeling pressured to play is valid and it is important that players only return to action once they feel comfortable.

At this point, it appears that there has been a breakdown in communication between the players and the league and that may need to be addressed before the next steps are taken.

Newcastle fans react to ‘green light’ takeover news

Newcastle United fans have been going nuts over the latest news surrounding the prospective takeover of the northeast club this week.

The Express reported on Wednesday evening that it is thought the Premier League have given the green light over the Magpies’ Saudi takeover and an official announcement could be made in the coming days.

This was relayed to Twitter by popular fan account @NUFC360 and supporters have been going wild in response.

A deal worth approximately £300m has been agreed between current owner Mike Ashley and Amanda Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners, who are backed by the Saudi public investment fund and the Reuben brothers, for over a month now.

Celtic fans split on Toljan after Europa League setback

[ad_pod ]

Celtic’s Europa League hopes are dangling by a thread after a 2-0 defeat to Valencia this week, and fans are still unconvinced by January signing Jeremy Toljan.

Toljan’s arrival at Parkhead was a very welcome sight for Celtic fans, as the right side of Brendan Rodgers’ defence has been a weak point all season.

Mikael Lustig is well past his best and Cristian Gamboa never really seems to have earned the manager’s trust, so it was no surprise to see Toljan go straight into the starting XI after his arrival from Borussia Dortmund.

However, after impressing and grabbing an assist in a 2-0 win over Hibernian, he struggled massively at times on Thursday night.

The 24 year-old, who already has 72 Bundesliga appearances to his name, recorded the lowest pass completion rate of any of the Celtic defenders or midfielders with just 86 per cent.

It was on the defensive end where his vulnerabilities were more clearly exposed though, as Valencia made scoring European away goals look easy against a disorganised Hoops back line.

You can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below, where fans are split on the young defender…
