Southampton’s Jannik Vestergaard misses out on Denmark call up

[ad_pod ]Southampton’s excellent displays of late and the individual performances therein have rightfully caught the eyes of various national sides, with Jan Bednarek and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg earning respective call-ups to Poland and Denmark for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Saints captain Hojbjerg has been solid in midfield for much of the season but there is a case to be argued that his teammate and compatriot Jannik Vestergaard, who has been great in recent weeks, should have been named in Denmark’s squad too.

The behemoth has largely cut the occasional error out of his game and, alongside the aforementioned Bednarek, has become a regular fixture at the back for Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Huddersfield’s Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen has made the cut ahead of the 26-year-old, despite having fallen out of favour under Jan Siewert somewhat, while there was also a place for Andreas Christensen – a fringe player at Stamford Bridge.

Former Monchengladbach man Vestergaard has made far more appearances than both in recent months and should feel aggrieved that he hasn’t been included in the national setup this time around.

Of course, minutes played aren’t a measure of quality but Vestergaard has been immense recently. What team doesn’t have room for a 6-foot-6 centre-half who is bang in form? Denmark, apparently.

Spurs fans far from thrilled with England squad announcement

[ad_pod ]

England manager Gareth Southgate announced on Wednesday his squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro.

West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice wins his first call-up for the country after declaring his international allegiance to England over the Republic of Ireland.

And Southgate has also included a total of five Spurs players in his selection.

Full-backs Danny Rose and Kieran Trippier, the latter of which scored the opening goal in the World Cup semi-final against Croatia in the summer, are both included, along with midfielders Eric Dier and Dele Alli and striker Harry Kane.

Spurs fans, however, are far from delighted with the national team manager’s selections.

Alli only returned from injury against Southampton last weekend, while Kane has rushed his way through his recovery from a ligament problem to make his comeback, but has appeared half-fit in recent games. Dier, too, missed four games prior to the encounter with the Saints.

And supporters are worried that some of the club’s key stars could pick up even more injuries as the club look to qualify for the Champions League by finishing in the top four.

James Ward-Prowse pinpoints one big reason for his recent improvement

[ad_pod ]

James Ward-Prowse’s sensational free-kick to beat Spurs last time out capped off the latest in a string of fantastic performances from the midfielder, who was – eventually – rewarded for his exploits with an England call-up this week.

The 5 ft 8 ace was certainly deserving of the honour having netted six goals in his last nine league appearances, including three in his last three – a fantastic turnaround after a tough first few months of the season, in which he was benched regularly by Mark Hughes.

Now, though, Ralph Hasenhuttl is in charge and the Austrian has placed huge amounts of faith in the number 16, who has now  highlighted the major change that has been made to his game in 2019:

“It is a good thing to be nice but to get to a certain level you have to have that bite and difference and ultimately, I want to play week in, week out and if the manager demands certain things of me, I have to abide by it and change my ways.

“I feel I have benefited as a person and as a player from those changes.”

Indeed, the singularly-capped international was widely regarded as that nice, young player from the academy, although now he has shaken that off – a development epitomised by his reaction to Wilfried Zaha’s dismissal in the draw with Crystal Palace in January.

There is certainly more verve about the Saints star’s game and while the difference made by his free-kicks now hitting the top corner consistently rather than not is huge, that ‘bite’ is equally important when you’re in a relegation battle. Wonder-goals aside, the local lad has come on leaps and bounds since Hasenhuttl’s arrival and both deserve huge credit.

Millwall fans react as Tim Cahill announces his retirement

[ad_pod ]

Millwall and Everton legend Tim Cahill has announced his retirement from football this week, with the Australian set to hang up his boots at the end of the season after a fantastic career spanning 20 years.

The 39-year-old made 217 appearances for the Lions between 1998 and 2004, scoring 52 goals – of which his winner against Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final of 2004 will remain the most memorable amongst the Millwall fans.

The striker enjoyed similar success at Everton after securing a move to Goodison Park that summer but surely felt his business at the Den was unfinished and eventually returned to east London in 2018, registering a further 10 appearances.

Even on the cusp of his forties, the heading expert is still scoring goals at a professional level and has netted twice for Jamshedpur in the Indian Super League this campaign.

Here’s what the Millwall fans had to say about his retirement on Twitter…

Emery must seal deal for Thomas Partey

Arsenal’s biggest letdown in the current campaign has been consistency as they’ve thrown away promising positions at times, which has harmed their top four push slightly.

Although, the Gunners currently find themselves above Manchester United and Chelsea in the race for a Champions League place, so Unai Emery’s side could soon return to the competition with their top four fate in their own hands.

Of course, securing a top four spot would allow the Gunners to go out and make a number of big-name signings to boost their silverware push next season. And, it appears as if the North London club already have their eyes on a potential addition, as according to AS (via ESPN), Arsenal are interested in Thomas Partey.

Much to the delight of supporters, their side recently received a big boost on their reported pursuit of the Ghana international, as according to ESPN, Partey is excited about the prospect of playing in the Premier League.

The Gunners already have Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka operating in the middle of midfield but bringing the 25-year-old to the Emirates would complete Arsenal’s midfield, as he’s a dominant force in the final third and the defensive third, with his tackling, strength, passing and aerial ability making him as well-rounded as they get.

And, his current manager Diego Simeone even stated he has the potential to be ‘incredible’ (as per Marca, via 90 Min), so Emery shouldn’t waste any time in bringing him to the Emirates in the summer.

Weekend roundup: Andrew Robertson’s brilliant display vs Tottenham Hotspur in quotes

[ad_pod ]

The pendulum has swung back towards Merseyside after an enthralling encounter at Anfield saw Liverpool score a last gasp winner to claim three points against Tottenham Hotspur.

It is moments such as Toby Alderweireld’s calamitous and desperately unfortunate own goal that naturally induce one thought across the psyche of the footballing world: lady luck is willing Liverpool to end their Premier League hoodoo.

To completely credit fortune for the victory would do Liverpool a major disservice, but it seemed otherworldly forces were at play as the ball somehow squirmed over Hugo Lloris’ line in the final minute of regulation time.

But the foundations of Liverpool’s victory were laid in the form of a handful of fine individual performances, most notably from Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson.

The latter provided an immaculate cross for Robert Firmino to gobble up and give the Reds the lead inside the first quarter of the game, and he continued to threaten all afternoon while simultaneously nullifying Tottenham’s endeavour to penetrate the right flank.

Robertson has established himself as a firm favourite amongst the Anfield faithful since he stepped into the first-team to replace Alberto Moreno, and that reputation seems to snowball with every passing fixture.

It was a performance which naturally drew gushing praise from the British media, so we’ve rounded up a handful of the best quotes from the weekend to summarise the Scotland international’s influence.

Phil McNulty – BBC’s Chief Football Writer

McNulty is not renowned for sensationalist superlatives or unnecessary hyperbole, so the extent of his gushing praise for Robertson speaks volumes about how highly he impressed on Sunday, via BBC.

‘At a time when Scotland’s international reputation is at a low ebb after a heavy defeat in Kazakhstan and a scrambled win in San Marino, the small consolation is that they possess a player who is a real jewel in Liverpool’s crown.

‘He was outstanding against Spurs, so good there was even a debate among experienced Liverpool watchers as to whether the modest 25-year-old is now on course to make himself one of the club’s finest left-backs.’

McNulty later went on to add: ‘Robertson is the epitome of Liverpool’s relentless optimism and self-belief, alongside the class and calm of Virgil van Dijk and those three celebrated forwards.’

As McNulty alludes to, Liverpool’s front-three often steal the limelight but there is certainly substantial evidence to suggest that it’s the defensive unit who are most deserving of the plaudits this season.

The former Hull City man has established a heroic reputation at Anfield in little more than eighteen months, and serious debate over his long-term credentials to enjoy legendary status on Merseyside is far from misplaced.

James Pearce – Liverpool Echo

The highly-respected Liverpool Echo journalist awarded Robertson an 8/10 for his performance, a rating which was only topped by Van Dijk, who was awarded a chart-topping 9/10.

Here’s what Pearce had to say about Robertson, via Liverpool Echo: ‘Made the most of the space Tottenham’s formation afforded him first half and put in a brilliant cross for the opener. Blocked a certain goal for Eriksen after the break.’

Just as Eriksen looked set to slam home into a gaping goal, the ever dependable Robertson was there to block a thundering effort that would surely have left Alisson statuesque.

Moments on which games so often hinge typically belong to Robertson.

Chris Shaw – Liverpoolfc.com

One of Liverpool’s club correspondents, Chris Shaw, was particularly eager to emphasise the brilliance of Robertson’s cross for the opening goal, via Liverpool’s official website.

It was a special ball worth mulling over and Shaw did exactly that.

‘Andy Robertson’s potential influence on the match was clear from the earliest stages as Liverpool switched possession to either flank as quickly as possible.

‘And the Scotland captain took full advantage of just such a cross-field pass to provide a sublime assist in the Reds’ opening goal for Firmino.

‘Robertson placed his delivery from the left channel in the perfect spot for his teammate to move between defenders and plant a firm header beyond Lloris.’

Intriguingly, it was also revealed that Robertson is now closing in on a Premier League record, with the full-back now just two assists short of Andy Hinchcliffe’s record of 11 (1994-95) provided by a defender.

Don’t bet against him surpassing that number in the final weeks of the campaign.
