West Ham: Club can save millions by giving Marcus Browne an opportunity

When it was revealed that West Ham only had a transfer budget of £30 million to play with this summer, many fans were surprised.

Compared to last year where the Hammers spent close to £100 million on new players as Manuel Pellegrini led the club to Premier League safety, the new budget (as per Sky Sports) is a shock to the system for West Ham fans and Premier League supporters in general.

But a lack of funds could be a blessing in disguise for West Ham, as it means they could turn to players from the academy for potential first-team players, and given how successful Declan Rice has been this season, this isn’t completely out of the picture, and one player who could be given a shot is midfielder Marcus Browne.

The attacking midfielder has been impressive on-loan for Oxford United this season, scoring nine goals and assisting five in all competitions for the League One side, and although West Ham fans might favour a big money move for Hakan Calhanoglu, who has been reported as a target (as per Calciomercato) for the east London side, Pellegrini could save valuable transfer funds by giving the academy product a shot.

Having seen what playing youth can do for a team this season with the rise of Rice being one of the most inspiring in English football this season, Pellegrini knows first-hand how important youth players can be for the first-team if only they’re given a chance to shine, and Browne can be the next player to do just that.

The midfielder has all the skills needed to flourish in the Premier League, and with Rice should just how good academy products can be in the first-team, Pellegrini could give Browne the chance to impress for West Ham next season.

West Ham fans, should Pellegrini turn to Browne next season? Let us know!

£461.5m v £121.5m: Neville’s comparison undermines Pochettino’s achievements at Spurs

[ad_pod ]

Gary Neville has claimed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a similar job on his hands at Manchester United as Mauricio Pochettino had when he took the reigns at Tottenham Hotspur.

Speaking on Sky Sports after United’s dismal 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town, a team already relegated, he said: “As a manager, you want to like your team. I look at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, I can’t imagine he’s down there thinking he likes watching this lot – I don’t.

“This isn’t a team at all. It reminds me of the Tottenham group Mauricio Pochettino inherited, with Kaboul, Adebayor, Capoue in, a group of individuals without any real spirit – he dismantled it piece by piece.”

Now, one can understand where Neville was coming from. He’s a man who bleeds for United and he loves the club but this assessment simply demeans the job Pochettino has done at Spurs.

He has turned the club into Premier League title contenders and also took them to a Champions League semi-final, all on a shoestring budget.

And when you compare the first side Pochettino put out – against West Ham United, in a 1-0 win – with the first team Solskjaer selected, in a 5-1 battering of Cardiff City, the differences become starkly apparent, particularly when one takes into account the transfer fees taken to bring the players to the football club…

Goalkeepers – Hugo Lloris (£7.9m) vs David De Gea (£18.9m)

Spurs shelled out under £8m to buy their captain from Lyon. Sir Alex Ferguson convinced United to part with close to £20m to buy a goalkeeper he envisioned becoming the club’s No.1 for years to come. Perhaps this one was a sound investment.

Right-backs – Kyle Naughton (£5m) vs Ashley Young (£16m)

The deal for Naughton saw £10m sent to Sheffield United, with Kyle Walker also coming along for the ride. Let’s assume that it was £5m for one and £5m for the other. Young still cost more than both players alike and, though he has stuck it out at United, is he on the same level as Walker? Not at all. He is better than Naughton, though, so there is that.

Centre-backs: Younes Kaboul & Eric Dier (£13.5m) vs Victor Lindelof & Phil Jones (£48m)

Kaboul cost Spurs £9.5m when Harry Redknapp brought him to the club for a second stint while Eric Dier was a bargain £4m. Lindelof cost £31m alone, while Jones, a player Ferguson adored, set United back £17m. Are you sensing a theme?

Left-backs: Danny Rose (£900k) vs Luke Shaw (£27m)

Spurs snapped up Rose when he was still a whippersnapper at Leeds; Shaw became the most expensive teenager in world football when he moved to Old Trafford.

CM: Nabil Bentaleb (£0) vs Ander Herrera (£29m)

Nabil Bentaleb, now at Schalke, came through the youth ranks at Spurs. Herrera was brought in from Athletic Bilbao for nearly £30m and is perhaps one of the best United signings from this side.

CM: Etienne Capoue (£9.4m) vs Nemanja Matic (£40m)

Capoue has become a star at Watford but he never shined in north London and the £9.4m spent was easily written off. Matic, who is struggling in Manchester, cost more than quadruple Capoue’s transfer fee.

CM: Christian Eriksen (£11.5m) vs Paul Pogba (£89m)

The two teams’ creative hubs; Eriksen was signed for a bargain £11.5m from Ajax after Gareth Bale left Spurs, while Pogba briefly became the world’s most expensive footballer when he returned to Old Trafford from Juventus. One wonders who United would rather have these days, mind.

RW: Aaron Lennon (£1m) vs Jesse Lingard (£0m)

A rare win for United here; Lennon joined Spurs from Leeds United for a nominal price but there was a fee involved. Lingard came through the United academy.

Rashford is another academy boy who has made it big at United, while Adebayor cost £5m when he made his initial loan move from Manchester City permanent. It did not work out.

LW: Erik Lamela (£25.8m) vs Anthony Martial (£36m)

Lamela was meant to be the heir to Bale’s throne at Spurs but he is now permanently injured and seems to have alienated half the Spurs fanbase. Martial, meanwhile, is yet to deliver on his astonishing potential and has, ironically, been linked with Tottenham in the past.

Substitutes: Spurs (£41.5m) vs United (£157.6m)

Spurs started the game against West Ham with Roberto Soldado, Lewis Holtby, Andros Townsend, Harry Kane, Michael Dawson, Brad Friedel and Ben Davies on the bench. Soldado cost £26m. Davies cost £10m and Holtby a minimal £1.5m, while Dawson was part of a joint-£8m deal that also involved Andy Reid. Assuming he cost half of that, Spurs’ total comes to £41.5m.

United dwarf that figure, with the likes of £47m buy Fred and £37.1m signing Juan Mata on the sidelines.

Totals: Spurs (£121.5m) vs Man Utd (£461.5m)

Neville claims that Solskjaer has a similar job on his hands to that which Pochettino inherited. He doesn’t.

The Norwegian has an embarrassment of riches at his disposal and did not even start Fred in his first game; the Brazilian cost more than Spurs’ record signing Davinson Sanchez.

Yes, the recruitment may have gone wrong at Old Trafford. Yes, there may be a few unsavoury characters in the dressing room. Yes, there may be a few too many passengers.

But the bottom line is this: Comparing this United team – who have all the money in the world – with the Spurs team Pochettino inherited is akin to comparing Waitrose with Lidl.

That the two have swapped roles now is a testament to the genuinely phenomenal management of the Argentine.

And Neville’s words simply serve to demean the job that he has done in north London.

Player Zone: Is Manchester United’s most promising talent Marcus Rashford beginning to dwindle?

[ad_pod ]

Gary Neville recently afforded Marcus Rashford a high-end compliment by insisting that the Manchester United forward was England’s most promising talent. This was in stark contrast to the pundit’s comments less than a month prior: “Marcus these last couple of weeks has been nowhere near. I went to both Barcelona games and he looks off it at the moment. He looks like he’s carrying an injury at the moment, or something is not quite right, or the season has caught up with him.”

There is of course nothing contradictory about these remarks – one refers to form, the other to potential – yet even so praise for the 21-year-old this season from anyone with United in their blood sounds a little bit forced. Like a parent who once confidently claimed their little boy was an angel, a cherub, now prevaricating as that child grows up and goes off the rails: “He’s a good lad really. At heart.”

And speaking of going off the rails – or at least, as close to that as a thoroughly decent individual like Rashford is ever likely to sour – an anonymous team-mate has also reportedly insinuated that he is ‘not quite the humble figure he used to be’.

So what gives? Is there a problem with England’s most promising talent? Is he not quite as promising as we were promised?

When the Manchester-born striker first broke through in early 2016 he astonished. He scored twice on his league debut. He scored twice on his European debut. He scored on his international debut. More than his goals though his electric bursts and clinical demeanour marked him out as a possibly special find, one who few beyond Old Trafford even knew existed until he began dominating the back pages.

The uncertainly was exciting because nobody knew where the ceiling was in his development.

One point separated City and Liverpool but twenty-five separated them from the rest! Fans discuss who could reduce the deficit next season in the video below?

Now, three years on we are still not dealing in absolutes and after 170 United appearances and over ten thousand hours of professional football perhaps we should be. Instead, queries persist, big queries too such as wondering if this season’s underwhelming displays – along with a reputation for skying free-kicks as the norm – is simply a sustained period of poor form or if Rashford has levelled out after proverbially bumping his head on the ceiling.

Not that many dare air these queries. Earlier this month 360Sources tweeted…

When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge and almost immediately reverted his young charge to the centre ground things began to make sense. It was Jose Mourinho who was to blame, clearly. Because look at him, scoring for fun again. Involved and impactful.

But then the levels dropped once more, dramatically so. He was anonymous against West Ham. He was woeful at Everton. He was outshone by Mason Greenwood against Cardiff.

While the media continue with their nonsensical speculation that Barcelona are willing to splash out over a £100m on a player who is no longer burning bright the truth is that next season is key for Rashford. He must prove definitively once and for all whether he is indeed England’s most promising talent. Or just a good lad really.

The Chalkboard: Aston Villa can spring a surprise with diamond formation

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa were poor against West Brom on Tuesday night and that’s putting it lightly. Neither talismanic midfielders Jack Grealish nor John McGinn really got going whilst there was a toothlessness to their attack.

That was predominantly down to the lack of threat their wingers provided, but that isn’t a new issue.

Anwar El Ghazi has shown glimpses of his technical quality in the final third at times this season but is far too inconsistent. Albert Adomah, meanwhile, hasn’t hit the heights of last term whilst Andre Green has also struggled to settle in after coming back from a loan spell with Portsmouth.

As such, Dean Smith should spring a surprise in the play-off final against Derby by deploying a new formation.

On the chalkboard

Although Villa eventually prevailed on penalties to reach Wembley, they will have to be considerably better to break down Frank Lampard’s side.

Jonathan Kodjia is a man in form, scoring three times in his last six matches and as such, it’s hard to leave him out – especially after the performances of Villa’s wide men.

Their goals and assist return in recent times simply is good enough and with a place in the Premier League at stake, one more poor display could be costly.

Kodjia can play out wide himself but by switching formation to put him in his favoured position, Villa can thrive. He sustained a good partnership in attack with Tammy Abraham against Rotherham last month and it was something they should look to reignite.

Therefore, moving the pair closer to each other could be devastating. It wouldn’t only solve what is arguably Villa’s last remaining problem on the flanks, but it could also have a major impact on those in the middle of the park.

With two men playing in attack, a diamond midfield should be deployed, something which gives the team protection in defence but also creativity going forward.

Ludicrous: Alexander-Arnold’s inclusion in Alyson Rudd’s Team of the Decade is crazy

[ad_pod ]

In a recent article by The Times, some of the publication’s top writers revealed who they think should be part of a ‘Premier League Team of the Decade’, a very difficult task when you take into account the vast amount of high-level performers England has seen in that time.

Whilst errors are a natural occurrence when it comes to difficult tasks, foolishness and utter ridiculousness shouldn’t be as commonly present.

There are a number of debatable inclusions in some of the XI’s. For example. why is Christian Eriksen in Oliver Kay’s team? Why is Ashley Cole in Gary Jacob’s side when he left Chelsea in 2014 having been in steady decline as a footballer?

Luis Suarez certainly had no qualms about celebrating against his former employers in the video below…

Whilst they are somewhat baffling, Alyson Rudd’s inclusion of Trent Alexander-Arnold is probably the worst pick.

Don’t get me wrong, the Liverpool right-back is a precocious talent who looks amongst the world’s best already at just 20-years-old, but to include him in a Premier League Team of the Decade is a ludicrous call.

He only made his first Premier League start just over two years ago in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United, and has made just 55 appearances in the competition in total – to put things more clearly, this is a Team of the Decade, and the youngster has played senior football for just 1/5th of that time.

In her colleague Matt Dickinson’s team, he wrote: ‘A basic rule was a minimum three seasons in the Premier League so, for example, Luis Suárez made it but Ederson did not.’ Why was that theme not prevalent throughout all of the writers’ picks?

To justify her XI as a whole, Rudd wrote: ‘I was certain Petr Cech would be in goal given his longevity and bravery but I am convinced that Ederson is the reason for City’s astonishing run of form and is every bit as integral to his team’s innate confidence as Virgil Van Dijk is for Liverpool.

‘Kompany steals the second centre back place for being there when it mattered. No full back has been as exciting as Robertson for a decade. I am aware that Lampard and Gerrard sound a bit dated but they carried on their magnificent influence well into this decade.

‘Kanté is the first player to be roundly assumed to do the work of two midfielders. No one liked playing against Didier Drogba while Salah and Sterling are the two most exciting attackers the Premier League has seen.’

The fact that Rudd hasn’t even touched upon why she included Alexander-Arnold in her team is particularly strange, given the boldness of the inclusion requires the most explanation.

When the end of his career rolls around in about a decade-and-a-half’s time, Alexander-Arnold will potentially be spoken about as one of the best right-backs the game has every seen if his first few years in football are anything to go by.

Right now, however, Rudd’s call to place him in a Team of the Decade is excessively premature and makes very little sense.
