It can sometimes sound a bit funny to hear clubs outside of the top six talk about their ambitions for the future, especially when they sound ridiculous at first – remember when Hull City owner Assem Allam revealed he was determined to take the Tigers into the Champions League?
It can rightfully be laughed at when there are clearly no foundations or a plan in place to support such dizzying aspirations – Allam evidently didn’t think his vision through and now finds his side in the bottom half of the Championship.
One would assume that there must also have been a similar desire for some neutral supporters to have a giggle when Everton owner Farhad Moshiri revealed his plans to turn his side into Champions League regulars and have them winning Premier League titles consistently.

At the time of his words back in January, the Toffees were languishing in 11th and eventually finished the campaign in eighth – 44 points off champions Manchester City and 17 points off the top four, which is some way behind Moshiri’s vision.
However, where Allam and others have failed, Moshiri looks to actually be serious about taking his football club to the next level.
The appointment of transfer guru Marcel Brands was definitely a pivotal moment in Moshiri’s reign, and you only need to take a look at some of the players Everton have signed and those they have been linked with under Brands to see the club’s plans to improve.
Under the former PSV director, the Merseysiders have been able to attract genuine quality to the club in the form of players such as Lucas Digne, Richarlison and Andre Gomes, all of whom are fairly young and have time on their side.
In terms of those on their radar, they are just as exciting.
Players such as Lille’s 22-goal forward Nicolas Pepe have been linked, a man also being chased by the likes of Inter Milan and Liverpool, whilst Ajax’s young Brazilian sensation David Neres has also been mentioned as a potential transfer target – the attacker has attracted attention from some massive clubs.
Elsewhere, there is said to be interest in Juventus striker Moise Kean, one of Europe’s best young prospects who Arsenal are also keen on (see what I did there?) – Barcelona winger Malcom is also on the Toffees’ wishlist, as too is Chelsea and Arsenal target Wilfried Zaha.
Even a 17-year-old Brazilian prospect called Reinier, wanted by Real Madrid, Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan is said to be considering Everton over all of those European giants.
To be ready to go head-to-head with players such as those above, and to be vying with Champions League clubs for their signature, proves that Moshiri isn’t just resting on his laurels and leaving his words without substance.
Aside from the recruitment part of the game, the Toffees’ glitzy new stadium plans were recently revealed, showcasing their proposals for a £500m, 52,000-seater venue at Bramley Docks – another particular feature that Moshiri wanted when outlining his desire for a ‘world-class, world-renowned football stadium’.
It’s all well and good saying what you want to achieve in future, but it’s another thing to act on it and actually make progress – it definitely appears as if Moshiri is determined to propel Everton amongst the big guns.
