Manchester United defenders Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof endured a night to forget at Old Trafford, one that has raised question about whether or not they are fit for purpose as a duo as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side lost ground in the Premier League title race.

It seems Solskjaer’s side are still smarting from the 2-0 quarter-final defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup as defensive frailties once again ultimately proved to be their undoing.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored a late equaliser to snatch a dramatic point from the jaws of defeat for the Toffees as United missed a chance to go level on points at the top of the Premier League with Manchester City, who have two games in hand over their neighbours and play Liverpool on Sunday.

“We’re not talking about winning titles,” said Solskjaer. 

“We’ve come a long way. We shouldn’t be considered as title chasers. That’s one for you [media]. We’ve got better as a team – let’s see where we end up.”

Captain Maguire has been a shoo-in to start in centre of the defence but has been partnered by Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe at various points over the course of the campaign and was at fault himself for the defensive meltdown they suffered against the Toffees.

Reports have now emerged over the past week suggesting that the Red Devils are leading the race to sign Nikola Milenkovic from Serie A side Fiorentina.

The £25m-rated 23-year-old, who has won 26 caps for his country, is one of the most highly-rated centre-backs in European football, having made 118 appearances across all competitions, per Transfermarkt.

Signing Milenkovic in the summer would give United an immediate upgrade on Lindelof.  Again last night, he was rated as one of the worst United players on the pitch by SofaScore in the 3-3 draw with Everton. By the numbers, the Serbian’s defensive stats are better than Lindelof’s in almost every area, as per WhoScored.

Milenkovic is currently averaging more tackles (1.6) and more interceptions (1.2) per 90 in all competitions and makes more blocks than Lindelof as well, which suggests that he would be a calmer and more commanding presence alongside Maguire at the back.

It’s no surprise, then, that he has attracted interest from clubs across Europe, who are set to battle for his signature when the transfer market re-opens in a few months time.

At 23, he could be one of United’s starters for years to come if Ed Woodward brings him to Old Trafford and if he is able to hit the ground running, whilst he still has room for improvement.

The stats indicate that he could be able to do this and coupled with the fact he has experience of playing in the Europa League, which shows that he has played at a high standard of the game, he could be the man to come in and finally solve United’s defensive issues.

According to a report by Football Insider, Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers is a leading contender for the Tottenham Hotspur job if Jose Mourinho is sacked – with chairman Daniel Levy allegedly pinning him as a potential heir to the current Lilywhites manager. 

Indeed, nine years after he was Levy’s ‘preferred choice’ at Tottenham, it appears Rodgers is back into consideration as doubts continue to linger over Mourinho’s future in north London.

A potential sack for the Portuguese boss has been mooted, and while it remains to be seen whether Tottenham will dismiss, Football Insider now claim that Rodgers is a leading candidate for the potential job opening.

Football Insider also reveal that Rodgers himself was very keen to join Spurs at one point, but Liverpool made a formal approach first and the Northern Irishman agreed to be appointed at the Anfield helm.

Harry Redknapp was given his marching orders a fortnight later by Tottenham with Levy turning to Andre Villas-Boas as a Rodgers alternative.

Now, it appears he is a leading candidate for the Spurs job once again should Mourinho be shown the door.

Manchester United are looking to build on their win over Newcastle United this afternoon when they travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea.

The Red Devils return to Premier League action after securing their place in the last 16 of the Europa League thanks to a goalless draw with Real Sociedad at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces a selection dilemma ahead of United’s trip to west London, with the likes of Edinson Cavani, Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba all ruled out due to injury.

Here is Football FanCast’s prediction for how Solskjaer’s starting XI will line up when they face-off against Thomas Tuchel’s side, which sees the manager make four changes from the draw with Real Sociedad.

While Dean Henderson put in a solid, albeit unspectacular performance on Thursday night, David de Gea is likely to be given the nod between the sticks. The Spaniard is Solskjaer’s undisputed first-choice and should start once again this afternoon.

United’s back-line have been far too inconsistent for their own liking but showed some much-needed character in a much better performance at home to Newcastle and despite a few changes were solid again against Real Sociedad.

Both Aaron-Wan Bissaka and Luke Shaw have silenced the critics since the start of this season, while Harry Maguire should also make his return to action, and will start alongside Eric Bailly to form the rest of the back four.

With both McTominay and Pogba still missing due to injury, Nemanja Matic and Fred have performed admirably in their absence, and are expected to take to the field against Chelsea.

While Daniel James has played a fairly decent role in replacing Mason Greenwood on the right-wing, the Welshman is carrying a knock, and as such it is unlikely he will be risked in the midst of a busy schedule.

Unfortunately for Solskjaer, it will also come too soon for Cavani, which means Anthony Martial is expected to lead the line for the visitors, despite the fact that he has failed to score in any of his past four appearances across all competitions.

Thankfully, the in-form Marcus Rashford has been on a hot streak since the start of this season, having made 25 Premier League appearances with nine goals and eight assists and he will look to add to his numbers when the two sides collide later today.
