According to reports, Leeds United will not be making a move for Adama Traore in the summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks and months had suggested that the Whites were one of the clubs interested in signing the Wolves winger, but that now does not appear to be the case.

According to Football Insider, Marcelo Bielsa has reservations of the Spaniard’s qualities, and that he “does not believe Traore has the technical quality and ability to combine the play that he seeks in his wide attacker.”

The report added that Leeds were not interested in signing him in the January transfer window, and that will remain the case in the summer.

Bielsa making a mistake

The £36m-rated Traore is perhaps the most unique winger in the Premier League, given his incredible combination of speed and strength – in fact, after an impressive performance against Leeds last month, Martin Keown spoke about how “powerful and quick” he is, and that he loves watching him play.

Bielsa himself has recently admitted to how tough a player Traore is to mark, saying: “It’s better to follow the man than leave him to a team-mate. I believe, fundamentally, Traore likes to play out wide on the wings. If he dominates the ball on his side he’s difficult to start, so whoever’s marking him will need some support.”

As per Whoscored, his average of 4.2 successful dribbles per game in the Premier League this season is by far the highest of any player in the division, while he’s also the seventh-most fouled player per game.

That level of directness could’ve been game-changing for Leeds, especially given how the Whites have seen the likes of their own wingers in Jack Harrison and Raphinha thrive this season – they rank second and third for goals for their club with six and five respectively.

Having Traore in the team would force opposition sites into double-teaming him just to try and keep him quiet, and that in turn would open up the game for the rest of Leeds’ attackers.

It could’ve been a real game-changing signing, but instead it appears Bielsa is making a foolish mistake. Having a player who does something ‘different’ in a squad, whether that be a Traore-esque winger or a target man like Olivier Giroud at Chelsea, is key to posing different problems in the Premier League.

Instead, Bielsa appears intent on sticking to his tried-and-trusted system, which may be a bit of an oversight in games which could require a Plan B or something unique.

It is going to take a very special set of circumstances for Sunderland to lose at the moment.

Lee Johnson’s men have been completely transformed in recent months and have turned themselves into complete promotion candidates.

Sanderson has been getting the brunt of the praise and with the club trying to lure him to the north-east on a permanent basis, you can see why. However, O’Nien deserves an equal piece of the acclaim going Sunderland’s way.

For a makeshift centre-half, he has been nothing short of excellent. A matter of weeks ago, Johnson claimed he’d been “outstanding” in defence before revealing: “I think he could be the best utility player I’ve ever seen.”

Indeed, it’s hard to look past that fact. The 26-year-old has now played at right-back, in midfield and at centre-back this season.

His performance against Portsmouth was the tip of the iceberg. In winning nine aerial duels, he was only second to Wyke in that department. Alongside the two ground duels that O’Nien won, he made himself look like a seasoned veteran at the back.

Considering he’s only played in that area of the field on ten occasions, it’s been quite the performance from Sunderland’s combative midfielder.

To outline how consistent he’s been, O’Nien has won as many as 31 aerial duels over the last six games. That amounts to a grand tally of 5.3 per match; a number seldom replicated by any other player in the side.

The former Wycombe man has been a flawless colossus in recent weeks. Johnson would be foolish to remove him from the backline.

– Se estamos falando de resgatar a hegemonia do futebol, não podemos fazer uma retomada que não tenha vínculo com a nossa identidade. No caso do Audax, a ideia foi essa e o primeiro passo foi a formação do elenco. Passamos por uma boa preparação, tanto de pré-temporada (60 dias), como uma que excedeu o que é feito dentro das quatro linhas: reuniões, grupos de discussão e análises de vídeos. Por fim, fomos capazes de nos ajustarmos ao longo da competição e tivemos coragem de enfrentar os grandes fora dos nossos domínios. Tudo isso aliado à entrega de todos os envolvidos – contou.

Do trabalho realizado, ficam as experiências e aprendizados para seguir rumo ao objetivo principal.

– São dois grandes aprendizados. O primeiro é a valorização da dimensão humana, da rotina de trabalho e do envolvimento que mostrou o Fernando Diniz. Ele esteve disponível quase que de forma integral para todos. O segundo foi aprender a dar liberdade estrutural aos jogadores dentro do campo de jogo – afirmou, explicando:

– Na maioria das equipes, os jogadores têm uma restrição muito grande na ocupação de espaço. Geralmente, dos dez jogadores de linha, sete ou oito têm restrições significativas. O zagueiro é zagueiro, o lateral é lateral, o volante é volante… Nas equipes do Diniz ocorre exatamente o contrário. Sete ou oito jogadores de linha têm uma liberdade gigantesca e isso oferece uma riqueza de movimentos e de possibilidades para o time – relatou.

Perguntado se as grandes equipe brasileiras estão sofrendo com as ideias ‘copiadas’ do futebol europeu, o auxiliar explica que os times se veem obrigados a jogar pelo resultado e exemplifica sua posição através da estratégia de jogo adotada pelo Santos diante do Audax.

– Isso permitiu que diante de um time como o Audax, o Santos se ‘apequenasse’ para nos enfrentar. Em uma final de Campeonato Paulista, fora de casa, o Santos, que é campeão Brasileiro e Paulista por dezena de vezes, teve que abrir mão e jogar como um time pequeno para nos vencer. Essa foi a única alternativa que o Dorival encontrou para ser superior ao Audax naquele momento – disse.

Em termos de Seleção Brasileira, aproveitando o momento dos Jogos Olímpicos, Barros defende uma mudança estrutural. Para ele, a equipe de Rogério Micale não pode ser analisada somente pelos resultados obtidos na Olimpíada.

– Micale assumiu um trabalho há 40 dias da Olimpíada, sem saber se seria realmente o treinador do Brasil. Hoje, uma resposta dos jogadores seria muito diferente se eles se apresentassem com uma filosofia de jogo já construída, mas não é isso que acontece. Se fosse outro treinador teríamos a mesma coisa, com atletas se adaptando a uma filosofia totalmente diferente das anteriores – afirmou.

Ainda, Eduardo Barros conta que a esperança é de que Tite, técnico da Seleção Brasileira principal, possa contribuir com as tantas exigências que demandam o atual cenário do futebol nacional.

– Eu espero que o Tite consiga dar um primeiro passo para trazer mudanças significativas. Penso que para termos sucesso será necessário implantar um trabalho de longo prazo e que tenha preocupações com o resgaste da identidade de jogo que a gente perdeu – finalizou.

Southampton have been linked with a move for Slavia Prague striker Jan Kuchta recently and, if he were to join Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, it could be bad news for 22-year-old Dan N’Lundulu.

The south coast club are reportedly eyeing the 24-year-old ahead of the summer after his impressive performances with the Czech side so far this season, with 11 goals and five assists to his name in just 17 league appearances.

He has also been a big part of their impressive run in the Europa League, which saw them progress to the quarter-finals after a 3-1 win aggregate win over Rangers recently, with Kuchta boasting two goals and two assists in eight appearances in that competition.

The former Czech Republic under-21 international only joined Slavia Prague from Slovan Liberec last summer but has seen his value on Transfermarkt soar after a superb debut season; and considering the number of Premier League sides said to be interested in him, it would not be a surprise to see him depart this summer.

Should he make the move to St Mary’s, you worry that it could all but end N’Lundulu’s chances of making it as a regular under Hasenhuttl.

The 22-year-old has made just one start for the Saints in his career thus far, which came in the 2-0 win against Shrewsbury Town earlier in the season, when he also scored his first professional goal.

However, he has been afforded very few chances in the Premier League, with just 12 substitute appearances totalling 98 minutes to his name this season, despite Danny Ings’ injury problems and Che Adams’ indifferent form.

He has also fallen behind Nathan Tella in the pecking order in Hasenhuttl’s side and, although he has five goals in eight Premier League 2 appearances this season, N’Lundulu is 22 and should be playing regular senior football at this point in his career.

Although Hasenhuttl has praised him in the past and is clearly a big fan of the striker, his efforts are not being rewarded with chances in the first team.

Therefore, if Kuchta arrives in the summer, it is likely only going to decrease N’Lundulu’s chances of becoming a regular at Southampton and it could be the catalyst for him departing the south coast club without ever really having a chance to impress.

Marcel Brands should launch a summer swoop for Everton to sign an ideal Yerry Mina replacement in rumoured target, AC Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli.

What’s the word?

According to Il Milanista, Carlo Ancelotti is keen to bring Romagnoli to Goodison Park at the end of the season and make him the new leader of the Toffees backline.

Romagnoli has seen his long-term future at the San Siro cast into doubt with Stefano Pioli growing more at ease with overlooking the 26-year-old, having struck a strong defensive pairing in Simon Kjaer and Fikayo Tomori.

Tomori took over Romagnoli’s place in the Rossoneri side after the AC captain sustained an injury in training, and has impressed since joining on loan in January to the point that Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara will soon decide on taking up their €28m (£24m) option to purchase the Chelsea-owned enforcer.

Buying Tomori would leave Romagnoli at risk of being sold in the summer with his £107,000-per-week contract due to expire in 2022, and it looking unlikely that the 12-cap Italy international will be offered a new deal.

Romagnoli being made available is likely to pique the interests of Everton and Manchester United, who have both shown a liking in the sought-after £32.5m-rated titan.

Should Everton sign Romagnoli?

Romagnoli was an undisputable leader of Pioli’s Milan side as they strive in search of a first Serie A title since 2011, starting all 20 available league fixtures, but has struggled for game time since the mid-season arrival of Tomori.

Yet former Milan midfielder Lucas Biglia believes clubs would not hesitate to sign Romagnoli in the summer if his services hit the market, telling La Gazzetta dello Sport via Football-Italia: “I would never let him go. Tomori is a good defender, but he is the captain.

“He would have no problems in finding a new team. Top clubs like Juventus or Manchester City would sign him without thinking twice.”

Though Brands should be the one signing off on a Premier League move for Romagnoli without thinking twice, thus handing Ancelotti the new defensive leader that the Everton boss is allegedly set to chase.

A move for the 6ft Milan enforcer would also see the Toffees acquire a replacement for Mina, who the Daily Mail recently claimed could be sold at the end of the season as Ancelotti still has doubts over his best centre-back pairing.

Mina and Romagnoli offer a similar level of defensive output on average with their performances in the Premier League and Serie A, with the Colombian averaging 1.0 successful tackles and 1.1 interceptions a game to the Italian’s 0.8 and 1.2 respectively, per SofaScore

Romagnoli also completes 90% of his attempted passes like Mina does on Merseyside, wins 66% of his aerial duels to the 26-year-old’s 68% and provides an identical 1.6 shots.

Yet the Milan star would appear to have Ancelotti’s backing more so than the ex-Barcelona man, and would likely come in to partner Ben Godfrey – who the Toffees boss views as his best current option – in what could be an imperious wall in front of Jordan Pickford’s net.
