Insatisfeito com a falta de gols no Corinthians, o técnico Cristóvão Borges mudou o esquema da equipe para o jogo contra o Vitória. Apesar de ter saído atrás, o time voltou a marcar dois gols após seis partida e conseguiu a virada.

Depois de três jogos sem vitória, Cristóvão mudou a equipe do 4-4-2 para o 4-1-4-1, com as saídas de Giovanni Augusto e André para as entradas de Rodriguinho e Guilherme, que atuou como um “falso 9”. Após o trinfo por 2 a 1 sobre o Vitória, o treinador disse que deve manter o novo esquema.

– De uma forma geral gostei, porque a ideia era que continuássemos com consistência defensiva boa, mas variação de jogadas pelos lados. Como foi a primeira vez, acho que podemos evoluir nessa forma, e pretendo continuar, a não ser que as coisas não se encaixem – afirmou Cristóvão.

A última vez que o Timão havia marcado dois gols na mesma partida tinha sido na vitória por 2 a 0 sobre a Chapecoense, no dia 9 de julho. De lá até triunfo por 2 a 1 sobre o Vitória, o Corinthians empatou por 1 a 1 Com São Paulo e Figueirense, perdeu por 1 a 0 para o Internacional e 2 a 0 para o Atlético-PR, empate navamente por 1 a 1 com o Cruzeiro e, por fim, derrota por 3 a 0 para o Grêmio.

Com a virada sobre o Vitória, o Corinthians volta ao G4 do Brasileirão. O Timão tem 37 pontos e ocupa o terceiro lugar. Na próxima rodada, a equipe visita a Ponte Preta no sábado, às 16h, no Moisés Lucarelli.

South Africa manager Eddie Ntseki has shared his anger after Glasgow Rangers refused to allow Bongani Zungu to join up with the Bafana Bafana squad for their clash against Ghana.

Ntseki angry over Zungu situation

Zungu was selected to represent his country during the international break. However, while he will be able to play against Sudan, he has been denied permission to travel to his homeland for the Ghana match as South Africa is on the UK’s “Red List” (gov.uk). That means Zungu cannot travel there without needing to quarantine for two weeks upon his return to Scotland.

Ntseki was far from happy with Rangers’ decision on the 28-year-old as he said (via IOL):

“We should all agree that nobody from South Africa or Africa brought Covid-19. It is very unfair for us to be punished by saying: ‘You cannot be released to go to South Africa because it is a hot spot’. I think all over the world, it’s a hot spot.

“For them not to release our players it’s a very big disappointment for us. I think even in South America, they were made aware that there were players that weren’t going to be released for the World Cup qualifiers and they suspended their games.”

Unfortunately, this is the way of the world at the moment. A pandemic on this scale is unprecedented in our lifetime, and that means everyone has to make sacrifices. Football is already granted plenty of exceptions to travel regulations. and while Zungu’s absence is unfortunate for South Africa, that’s just the way it is.

The 28-year-old will probably be disappointed not to be able to join up with his national team. He has started just one of Rangers’ last 10 Premiership matches and recently found himself in hot water after breaking lockdown rules to attend a house gathering (Sky Sports).

A return to his homeland may have given him a welcome distraction as well as some more playing time. As it is, he will have to wait until the Sudan fixture to get back on the pitch.

According to a report by Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, dropping an enticing transfer claim on Twitter, he believes ‘Tottenham will look’ into signing VFB Stuttgart Nicolas Gonzalez this summer as a possible replacement for Gareth Bale.

Gonzalez, who has earned a stellar reputation this campaign following a fine 2020/2021 season, is apparently on Spurs’ radar as this claim emerges from the Sky reporter.

This comes as Bale looks set to return to Real Madrid upon the expiry of his season-long loan deal in north London, as admitted by the player himself during a candid interview whilst on international duty.

The 22-year-old winger, who Fabrizio Romano labelled an ‘amazing talent’, has scored six goals whilst assisting two others in 10 Bundesliga starts this season (WhoScored) – leaving little wonder why Spurs are allegedly keen.

According to Thomas, as he relays his report, Gonzalez isn’t the only name up for consideration either with Lille attacker Jonathan Bamba also being tracked by Daniel Levy and co.

Bale will eventually return to the Bernabeu as it stands but it is enticing that Spurs are already tracking possible replacements ahead of the summer window.

Time will tell whether Spurs land either of these names, however, it will be an interesting development to watch over.

Southampton have reportedly been scouting Bristol City midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson recently, and if he were to join Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side in the summer, it could be bad news for Will Smallbone.

According to the Bristol Post, Southampton scouts have been in attendance at Ashton Gate for recent Championship fixtures and have been keeping a close eye on Bakinson, who has established himself as a regular with the Robins this season.

The 22-year-old has spent the last two seasons on loan at Newport County and Plymouth Argyle but clearly impressed the management team with his performances in League Two, as he has gone on to make 28 appearances in the Championship for Bristol City so far this season.

Bakinson is currently rated at just £810,000 by Transfermarkt, and given that his contract is set to expire at the end of next season, he could represent a cheap option for Southampton in the summer transfer window if they want to add to their midfield options ahead of next season.

However, if he were to make the move to St Mary’s, then you worry that it could have a negative impact on Smallbone’s playing time under Hasenhuttl.

The 21-year-old has progressed through the academy ranks at Southampton and has gone on to make 13 appearances for the first team, in which he has managed one goal and two assists.

After making nine appearances in the Premier League last season, it was perhaps hoped that the Republic of Ireland underage international would push on and become a regular this season, but he has managed just three appearances in the top flight.

One of those was in the 2-0 defeat against Leicester City, when he was unfortunately forced off through what was later revealed to be an ACL injury in his knee, which is set to keep him sidelined for a significant period.

Therefore, there should definitely a concern that, given the time it will take Smallbone to recover from his injury, he could slip even further down the pecking order in Southampton’s midfield, especially if Bakinson were to make the switch to St Mary’s.
