Karnataka lift trophy in HSBC National Cricket Tournament for the Blind

Karnataka pulled off a three-wicket win against Delhi in the finals of the HSBC National Cricket Tournament for the Blind at the SPIC-YMCA ground in Chennai

V Ganesh14-Feb-2002Karnataka pulled off a three-wicket win against Delhi in the finals of the HSBC National Cricket Tournament for the Blind at the SPIC-YMCA ground in Chennai. The final was the obverse of the last league match between the same two teams yesterday at the Southern Railway Ground, a match that was won by Delhi. Shekar Nayak was the chief architect of today’s victory with a majestic ton.Delhi won the toss and decided to bat first, echoing yesterday’s decision. They scored 291 for the loss of nine wickets in the allotted 40 overs. Delhi openers Ram Karan and Pratap Bisht batted splendidly and added a mammoth 177 for the first wicket before the former fell to a direct hit from Manjunath after making 65 (74 balls, 3×4). Bisht made 39 (110 balls, 1×4), but his effort contributed 78 runs to the team score as he was completely blind.Barring Sunil Kadyan, the rest of Delhi’s batsmen failed to impress; Kadyan remained unbeaten on 40 off just 36 deliveries with two hits to the ropes. The Karnataka bowlers continued with their habit of gifting extras, with 53 wides and 25 no-balls featuring in the 86 extras. Manjunath was the pick of the Karnataka bowlers with three for 33 from his eight overs. Mahesh had a good day in the field, picking up two wickets and also effecting two stumpings.Chasing 292, Karnataka reached the target with just 11 balls to spare. Shekar Nayak was rightly adjudged the Man of the Match for his mammoth 161 off 138 balls with 13 fours. He won the match singlehandedly for Karnataka today, with the extras (62) being the next highest individual score.Nethraj gave good company to Nayak and scored 20 runs and contributing 40 to the team total. Like the Delhi middle order, the Karnataka middle order too failed to score runs. In fact, towards the end, Karnataka lost wickets in a hurry. When even Nayak was dismissed, Ravikumar held his nerve and made an important run-a-ball 17 not out. For Delhi, Gaur, Ram Karan and Ramesh Kumar picked a wicket each.Nayak also won the Man of the Series award in the partially sighted category for his consistent performances through the four days of the tournament. Bisht was the Man of the Series in the totally blind category and Mahesh in the partially blind category. The awards ceremony after the match was presided over by Ashok Kumbhat, Honorary Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. Prakash Kuruvilla, Senior Manager – South India, HSBC, was the chief guest, and he handed over the trophies and prizes. Badri Seshadri, MD, CricInfo India Pvt. Ltd., offered a speech of thanks at the end of the ceremony, bringing to an end a tournament that should go a long way in promoting the worthwhile cause of blind cricket.

Weather conditions in Wellington could result in slow pitch

Changes to both teams appear likely for the second match in the National Bank Series between New Zealand and England at the WestpacTrust Stadium in Wellington tomorrow

Lynn McConnell15-Feb-2002Changes to both teams appear likely for the second match in the National Bank Series between New Zealand and England at the WestpacTrust Stadium in Wellington tomorrow.New Zealand’s change, bringing in Brendon McCullum for Ian Butler, is a response to the expected slow pitch while England’s choices are likely to be more extensive with Andy Caddick being touted as a victim of Wednesday’s first loss to be replaced by Matthew Hoggard with Owais Shah possibly to come in for Paul Collingwood.Wet weather, the curse of this New Zealand summer, has allowed minimal preparation on the Stadium pitch which is still sporting the after-effects of last weekend’s IRB Sevens tournament.Groundsman Trevor Jackson has followed the trend in place at the Basin Reserve, the Capital’s other cricket venue, where he used a marquee before the Boxing Day Test against Bangladesh to get the necessary pitch preparation done.Cricket Wellington chief executive Ervin McSweeney was unconcerned at claims in the city that the match would definitely be transferred to Sunday.”It’s supposed to be clearing. We have had periods today with sun and the cloud has been higher than over the past few days.”The pitch is under a tent, because it has been raining for four days.”We put the tent up because we want to do the best we can. I’m optimistic that everything will be OK, there is only so much you can do,” he said. The game was scheduled to go at 2pm tomorrow and that would be the case if the weather conditions were right.”The pitch at the Stadium is significantly better two days out from the match than the Test wicket was.”We do need some sort of help from the elements and the next 24 hours are very important,” he said.England will be looking to pull a match back on New Zealand to level the series but just as they didn’t perform well in the first game, they must also know that New Zealand are capable of much better. Both sides need to lift their batting through the middle and later overs of the innings while England also need to sharpen their fielding.England have pigeon-holed the first match as a game they lost rather than New Zealand won.Such thinking discounts the fact that despite being under a brutal assault at the start of the game, New Zealand managed to keep their wits and apply the pressure when the opening came. The fact is that New Zealand won because they wanted to win more than their opponent. They won because when it mattered they took their chances.Increasingly, recognising those moments of vitality in a game when the winning or losing can be gone so quickly, is the element New Zealand must harness if it is to become a more efficient one-day unit. That also includes, as it does for England, recognising the value to be had from partnership building. It is still the key to success in one-day cricket.Should McCullum be included in the New Zealand side it is likely to be down the order to allow further development of the Nathan Astle-Chris Nevin alliance. One thing is certain, if McCullum is preferred to Butler, the margin between the fielding ability of the two sides is only going to be widened.

Leeds United: Alan Hutton reacts to Elland Road expansion plans

Alan Hutton has been left stunned as Leeds United plan to expand their stadium capacity to 55,000, as reported by Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Fans begin to return to their rightful home

As Leeds United prepare for 2021/22, they will be looking to maximise all available avenues to improve on their impressive ninth placed finish last time out.

Marcelo Bielsa will be excited to gain an edge on their rivals through additions to the playing squad.

Advantageously, the permanent return of fans in Premier League stadiums next season also looks increasingly likely, as Wembley gets set to host 60,000 supporters for the EUR0 2020 semi-final and final contests [BBC].

The Whites had previously been permitted to host 8000 supporters in their last home match of the 2020/21 campaign at home to West Bromwich Albion [BBC].

Now, the Elland Road faithful could be set for even bigger developments regarding their match-day experience, something even ex-pro turned pundit Hutton has been buzzing about.

The Latest: Hutton has his say on ‘absolutely brilliant’ Leeds United plans

Speaking in an interview with Football Insider regarding a potential uptake in stadium capacity to 55,000, he said:

“That’d be special. That’s the only thing I can say, that’d be special.

“It’s a special stadium anyway, I think the fans are absolutely brilliant. They sing from minute one to 95. They always back their team and to pack even more fans in there, I think will be incredible.

“It’ll be incredible to go and see. It’s an iconic stadium for me, growing up with the likes of Woodgate, Robbie Keane, all those guys that were there.

“The fans have always backed them all the way. To make it even bigger with even more fans in there, it’d be some experience to play there.” [Football Insider].

The Verdict: Huge boost for Leeds if it happens

Elland Road contains a raucous atmosphere at the worst of times, which would only multiply with more supporters in weekly attendance.

This would also give the Leeds United players a lift in times of need, as vocal backing from a wall of Whites supporters would be a mouth-watering prospect to perform in front of; something Hutton eloquently points out.

All things considered, there is no reason to suggest why this would not be a beneficial move for Leeds United, in the immediate and longer-term, both on the pitch and in terms of finances behind the scenes, as football continues to deal in an uncertain financial climate due to the pandemic.

O jovem ganhou elogios do técnico Cristovão Borges.

One fine day in a miserable summer for Otago

For the first time in this long and dreary summer – only two days from its scheduled end and with each of those days shortening in the flood towards winter – a little weary sunshine shone on Otago’s back

Steve McMorran25-Mar-2002For the first time in this long and dreary summer – only two days from its scheduled end and with each of those days shortening in the flood towards winter – a little weary sunshine shone on Otago’s back. When they left the field at McLean Park tonight, outflanked by lengthening shadows and overlooked a light sky whitening towards evening, their step was a little more jaunty and their chins were held higher, their faces were less downcast.Because today and more obviously than on any of the 37 days of State Championship cricket which has preceded it, Otago had a day in the sun, a day on which their spirit shone – an excuse to smile and be proud.Otago dominated the second day of their Championship match against Central Districts, recovering their first innings which was a little faded by stumps on the first day, then gaining and enlarging a first innings lead which Central reduced partially and without wicketloss before stumps.Resuming at 59/3, Otago were given strength and confidence by Chris Gaffaney and Craig Pryor, then Pryor and Simon Beare, then Beare and Scott Waide and finally by Duncan Drew and Neil Rushton who put on 36 by their 10th wicket. With those various innings and various partnerships, Otago reached 268 in its first innings, replying to Central’s 178, to establish a 90-run first innings lead. By stumps and after nine overs, Central was 27/0 in its second innings and Otago’s lead was still 63, a little eroded but still impressive.Otago sides are well known for their spirit and admired for it. They have a determination belied by natural casualness, a steadiness and a sense of duty to each other and to their province. They demonstrated that today when, with steady application, they took charge of this 10th match of the season and made less likely a 10th consecutive loss. The season has inflicted on Otago nine losses in nine matches and it has been left to them in this last game, against a team placed third on the Championship table, to take all steps necessary to avoid a season without any redeeming feature. They produced the determination today to avoid a full card of losses.Otago progressed in the manner of a relay team of post riders to a first innings lead by the middle of the second session. They developed that lead after tea and had some control over their own fate when they allowed Central to bat again with nine overs remaining in the day.Gaffaney was the first man to take charge, to carry the baton which represented Otago’s hopes. He took his overnight score of 33 on to 66 in a fourth wicket partnership with Pryor which lifted Otago from 51/3 to 126/4, adding 75 runs.Gaffaney, who faced the first ball of the innings on Sunday afternoon, batted 201 minutes and punctuated his innings with six fours. When Gaffaney was finally out, caught by Campbell Furlong at slip from Brent Hefford in the 50th over, Otago were 52 runs from Central’s first innings total.Pryor then took charge and, in taking his score on to 38 in 174 minutes – an effort of remarkable application and much of it as Gaffaney’s lieutenant – lifted Central to 162/5. When he was out in the 65th over, Beare was at the crease well set and ready to lead Otago on to a first innings advantage.Beare dominated a partnership of 44 for the sixth wicket with Nathan Morland which lasted almost 15 overs and during which, around 2pm, first innings points were achieved. Of those 44 runs, Morland made only seven but he, too, gave his team good service.Beare’s was a fine innings – ambitious and decisive, well-paced and full of simple but effective strokeplay. He pushed the scoring on at its most regular tempo of the day: he made 60 in 140 minutes from 114 balls with seven fours. He played with balance and judgement off both feet and took his boundaries with crisp timing and careful placement.Beare was out in the 86th over when Otago was 217 and leading by 39 runs. Waide made 17 and was next out at 232/8 and Kerry Walmsley fell without scoring at the total, leaving Otago 54 ahead with one wicket in hand. But there was still spirit and a sense of clear purpose in the Otago side – a side with considerable batting depth in this match – and Rushton and Drew kept the innings alive for a further 15 overs. Their 36-run stand, epitomising Otago’s determination, left them in greater control of the day and the match.Ruston made 25 from 54 balls while Drew was left 11 not out.It would have been the crowning glory of the day if Otago had been able to claim a Central wicket before the curtain fell but they could not do so. Furlong and Peter Ingram saw Central through the last and important period of the day without loss.Ingram was 10 and Furlong 16 when drinks were taken. The advantage in the game, with Otago, is still a small one with two days remaining but if the visitors can bowl well in the first session tomorrow, expose Central’s middle then lower order, they might yet have the chance to end this summer with a last and pleasing moment in the sun.

Steve Bull says Tottenham’s Moussa Sissoko would start for Wolves

Steve Bull believes that Wolves would be able to offer Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko regular first-team football.

The Frenchman has been an important part of the club since joining from Newcastle in 2016, making more than 200 appearances in a Spurs shirt.

However, £30m man Sissoko now has just two years remaining on his contract and doesn’t appear to be a part of the club’s long-term plans having already been linked with a move to Napoli this summer.

He made 42 appearances in all competitions last season and was a regular starter in the Premier League up until Christmas.

But when Jose Mourinho opted to bring in an extra attacking player, Sissoko was sacrificed and therefore made just one league start in Tottenham’s final 17 fixtures.

With Oliver Skipp expected to be a part of the first-team next season, the 31-year-old could slip even further down the pecking order, meaning a summer exit from north London is highly likely.

Asked whether Sissoko would be a good addition for Wolves, Bull exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“Ideal, and I think he would get [regular first-team football]. Someone like that in the side, massive presence and he isn’t scared of putting his foot in.

“He could probably teach a few of the youngsters, ‘listen follow in my footsteps and I’ll get you up there.’ “
