Graeme Smith, the Rajasthan Royals opener, has been ruled out of the final of the Indian Premier League because of a hamstring injury he sustained during the semi-final against Delhi Daredevils on Friday.Smith was rested for Rajasthan’s last two league games because he injured his hamstring against Chennai but returned to open the innings in the semi-final. However, he pulled up while running a single in the second over and continued batting with a runner, Mohammad Kaif. He was eventually dismissed for 25 off 21 balls as Rajasthan crushed Delhi by 105 runs.”Smith has played a huge part in the team’s success and we had gave him a couple of games off to recover from his hamstring injury [against Chennai],” Shane Warne, the Rajasthan captain, said. “Yesterday he was running around like an 18-year-old and said he had no problem at all. However, during the game [against Delhi] he tore his hamstring in different spot.”Unfortunately, he [Smith] is out for tomorrow’s game [final]. We have to make the big decision on who will open the innings with Swapnil [Asnodkar]. Younis Khan and Kamran Akmal come to my mind as being likely to open in the final.”Smith’s injury is a blow to Rajasthan for he is their second-highest run-scorer with 441 at an average of 49. He also forged an attacking opening partnership with Swapnil Asnodkar – the pair average 59.71 at 8.96 per over, with two century stands.Rajasthan are likely to pick Akmal, who has scored 122 runs in five innings at a strike-rate of 171.83, over Younis who has played just one game in the IPL so far. If Akmal does get the nod, he is likely to keep wicket instead of Mahesh Rawat, which could also open the door for Niraj Patel’s return.Rajasthan will take on the winner of the second semi-final between Chennai and Kings XI Punjab, which will take place on Saturday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The final will be held on Sunday at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

Ball: Mendes could be one for the future at Manchester City

Sporting CP defender Nuno Mendes could be one for the future at Manchester City, according to former City defender Michael Ball.

The Premier League champions have been linked with the 19-year-old this summer, with journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting the Citizens’ interest, but the club have no intention of paying the €50m price tag Sporting have put on him.

Mendes offers versatility as he can play as both a left midfielder and left-back, with the latter a position in which City rotated between Oleksandr Zinchenko, Benjamin Mendy and Joao Cancelo last season. At just 19 years of age, Mendes has already made 45 appearances for Sporting CP’s first team, with Ball believing he could be a player for the future.

In an exclusive interview with Transfer Tavern: “If he comes to Manchester City, he’s got time on his hands, he can develop under Pep, learn off the players around him like Foden did, get parts here and there, so when he is ready in a year, 18 months’ time, he’s ready to bounce in and he knows the club and knows how Pep wants to play.

“So yeah, that could be one for the future for Manchester City but obviously for coming straight into that starting line-up, I think it’s just a stretch too far for both of them.”

Whilst City are interested in Mendes, another full-back playing in Portugal who has been linked with a move to Manchester is Benfica’s Alex Grimaldo. According to Pedro Almeida, there are talks between the two clubs, with Benfica reportedly wanting €30million for the full-back.

Nottingham Forest interested in Mert Yilmaz

Nottingham Forest are interested in a deal to bring Mert Yilmaz to the City Ground this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Turkish media outlet Star, who claim that Forest are rivalling a number of European clubs for the signature of the Antalyaspor right-back, with Dane Murphy thought to be extremely keen on bringing in a fresh face in the position prior to transfer deadline day in late August.

The report goes on to state that the Super Lig side are commanding a figure of around €2m (£1.7m) in order to part with the defender this summer, who joined the club from Bayern Munich just 12 months ago.

Big mistake

While it is true that Forest are lacking a considerable amount of depth at right-back, with Chris Hughton currently having only Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel and Carl Jenkinson – the latter of whom the 62-year-old has informed is free to leave the City Ground this summer – capable of operating in the position, it would nevertheless appear to be a rather large mistake on the part of the Reds CEO to sanction a move for Yilmaz.

Despite having come through the impressive RB Leipzig youth system, as well as being signed by Bayern back in 2018, the defender has done very little during his time at Antalyaspor to suggest he is worthy of a move to the Championship.

Indeed, over his 11 Super Lig appearances for the club last season, the £900k-rated man helped his side keep just one clean sheet, as well as making an average of a mere 0.6 interceptions, 1.6 tackles, 0.7 clearances and winning just 2.7 duels per game.

These returns saw the £3.9k-per-week former Turkey U21 international earn a highly disappointing seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.41, ranking him as Antalyaspor’s second-worst performer in the league.

As such, there would appear to be far better options for Murphy to target in the position this summer – both in terms of ability and price – with the potential signing of Yilmaz very much looking to have the potential to be the biggest mistake of the chief executive’s reign at Forest to date.

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) will meet on July 24 and 25 to discuss what its president Julian Hunte considers a crisis in their cricket. The board will ask the team management, specifically coach John Dyson, about how they plan to improve the technical skills of the players to make them competitive on the international circuit.Dyson had said that West Indies, “compared to the other side, lack some batting skills, some bowling skills and some fielding skills”, after they conceded an unbeatable 3-0 lead to Australia in the five-ODI series. West Indies also lost the three-Test series to Australia 2-0.”We want our team to be number one both in performance and emoluments,” Hunte, who is currently in Dubai for the ICC’s annual conference, said. “However, if we do not start winning we run the risk of being relegated and we will not be able to earn the money that we require to regain our place at the pinnacle of world cricket.”We need to synchronise all our various efforts and plans to achieve the short-term objective of getting higher up in the rankings,” Hunte said. “We have to widen our pool of talent, have a clearly stated and objective selection philosophy, increase the amount of cricket played at the regional level, and improve the standard of the players and teams in our tournaments, and we must do it all very quickly. If not, we will not be creating history, as we did in the past. We will be history.”At the meeting, the board will also consider the Cricket Committee’s recommendations for a new selection panel, since the contracts of the members of the current panel expired on June 30.

Gibbs included in South Africa's ODI squad

South Africa have named a 15-man squad for the one-off Twenty20 international and five-match ODI series against England

Cricinfo staff05-Aug-2008South Africa squadGraeme Smith (capt), Hashim Amla, Johan Botha, Mark Boucher (wk), AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Andre Nel, Makhaya Ntini, Justin Ontong, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn.South Africa have named a 15-man squad for the one-off Twenty20 international and five-match ODI series against England. Herschelle Gibbs, who had expressed doubts over his international career after being left out of the Test squad, has been included, as has Dale Steyn, who was ruled out of the final two Tests against England with a broken thumb.”The squad is made up of the players who have done well for us over the past year and we have every confidence they will regain the No. 1 ranking from Australia,” Joubert Strydom, the convenor of selectors, said. “The only player no longer part of the mix is Charl Langeveldt, who is no longer available.” Langeveldt, who had opted out of the tour of India earlier this year following his controversial selection ahead of Andre Nel, joined Derbyshire on a two-year Kolpak contract.”We have included Hashim Amla as the 15th player in the squad because of the heavy workload that Graeme Smith has had to carry and the injuries he has suffered recently,” Strydom said. “Hashim played in our most recent ODI series against Bangladesh and he will provide the cover in the opening batting area.”The selection of an additional player, Strydom said, was “more than justified” given that there were nine limited-overs games, including the warm-up matches.Smith had suffered a back injury while batting in the tour game against Bangladesh A. However, he played the subsequent Test at Edgbaston, leading South Africa to a five-wicket win with an unbeaten 154.Jacques Kallis and Makhaya Ntini, who had been rested for the Bangladesh ODIs, return to the squad, in place of Alviro Petersen and Charl Langeveldt.Gerald Majola, Cricket South Africa’s chief executive, congratulated the team on their triumph in the Test series and looked forward to further success on the tour. “The Proteas’ first Test series win in England since unity in 1991 is a fantastic achievement and one that has made the whole country immensely proud,” Majola said. “We hope now that Graeme Smith and his players can finish off the Test series at The Oval with another high-quality performance before turning their attention to Twenty20 and ODI cricket.”The Oval Test starts on August 7. South Africa then play three warm-up matches before the Twenty20 international on August 20.

Aston Villa suffer Luiz blow before Watford

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has confirmed a major blow ahead of his side’s Premier League clash against Watford on Saturday afternoon.

The Midlands club get their campaign underway when they make the trip to Vicarage Road to take on a newly-promoted Hornets side.

However, speaking in his pre-match press conference, the Villa manager confirmed a significant blow to his squad, revealing that Douglas Luiz will not be available for selection following his involvement in Brazil’s Olympic Games triumph last weekend.

Smith said: “Douglas will be coming back in on Monday, hopefully with his gold medal around his neck and he’ll get a good welcome from everybody. I’ve been really pleased with what he’s done at the Olympics and I’m proud of him.”

The 23-year-old has pretty much been a permanent fixture in Smith’s side since making the switch to Villa Park in 2019, already making 76 appearances for the first-team and playing 33 out of their 38 Premier League games last season.

His form even earned him international honours, picking up his first senior caps for Brazil, so it’s been no surprise then that his market value has sky-rocketed, now standing at £31.5m according to Transfermarkt compared to the £9m upon his arrival at the club two years ago.

Speaking last summer, The Athletic journalist Gregg Evans said of Luiz: “He’s an absolute joy to watch now and I never thought I would be saying that. Villa have got a fantastic player in Douglas Luiz now, he looks like an absolute star, he could have played in that Man United team.

“He was better than (Paul) Pogba, I thought. I thought he was brilliant, hardly did anything wrong, hardly put a foot wrong. He won so many interceptions and made so many important blocks. When he gets the ball, he passes it nicely. He’s the best player in that Villa team at the moment because it’s just not working for John McGinn.”

The fact that Luiz was a virtual ever-present for Smith last season shows the kind of importance he has to this side, and it’s exactly why the Villa boss will be gutted to be without the Brazilian for today’s clash against Watford – especially as Pau Torres, who played for Spain in the Olympic final, was involved for Villarreal in the UEFA Super Cup against Chelsea on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, this Villa star could now leave…
