Iheanacho must start against Napoli

Leicester City kick off their Europa League campaign with a tricky opening fixture against Serie A giants Napoli this evening.

It’s been a slow start to the campaign for the Foxes despite their Community Shield victory in the curtain-raiser against Manchester City, with the same opponents condemning them to their second defeat in four Premier League outings last time out.

And unusually for Leicester, it’s been in the final third where they’ve found life particularly difficult.

Their 1-0 loss at the hands of the Cityzens over the weekend was the first time they’ve failed to find the back of the net in the opening weeks of the new season but was also the fourth time in five outings that they’ve failed to score more than one goal.

Only a narrow 2-1 victory over newly-promoted, pointless Norwich City broke that run. It’s something that will be causing manager Brendan Rodgers some headaches, but the solution could be a rather simple one.

Leicester’s struggles in front of goal are due to several reasons, yet one is more obvious than most. Attacking midfielder James Maddison has failed to score or assist in his last 15 appearances as he struggles to rediscover his best form following an injury.

“Every player will always go through a period, especially with the rise James has had,” Rodgers said in Wednesday’s press conference after being quizzed over the player’s recent poor displays.

“Injuries have held him back. I’ve no doubt over the course of the season he will be an important player for us. He’s got a big talent.”

“He’s working hard in training. He will show his worth. I look forward to working with him. The level he has been at, you go through a period where you don’t quite hit the heights. But once he gets his rhythm and we improve as a team, he will get that form back,” he concluded.

However, Maddison’s hugely underwhelming displays of late have been hampering his team’s chances of success, and when there’s a player as talented as Kelechi Iheanacho waiting in the wings, there’s only so long Rodgers can keep faith with the Englishman.

Iheanacho showcased his truly top-class potential in the second half of last season, lining up with fellow frontman Jamie Vardy to devastating effect.

In his last 15 top-flight outings, the 24-year-old bagged an astonishing 12 goals and appeared to carry that form into this season when he scored the winning goal in the Community Shield.

Since then, though, Iheanacho has only been on the pitch for a combined 67 minutes as Rodgers continues to persist with a struggling Maddison.

That must change against Napoli, the Northern Irish tactician must revert back to the player he hailed as “very talented” back in April, providing Leicester with a boost in the attacking areas while allowing Maddison time away from the spotlight to get back to his scintillating best.

And, in other news…Leicester receive big boost ahead of Napoli, Rodgers will be delighted

Mighty Mishra stands up to Flintoff

Cricinfo presents the Plays of the day from the second day of the second Test between India and England in Mohali

Moving on
Rahul Dravid may have stonewalled his way through the opening day, but the intent was unmistakeable on day two, especially once the new ball was taken. Stuart Broad was cut through cover, and when he then dropped short, Dravid flailed one over the slip cordon for four more. India made 123 runs in the opening session, with Dravid contributing 55 from 89 balls. You need some luck too
Dravid was two short of that long-awaited century when Andrew Flintoff got one to dart away from the bat at pace. It missed Dravid’s defensive push by millimetres. A couple of minutes later, he worked James Anderson off the pads to backward square leg for a single. It had taken 261 balls, but the ordeal was over.1000-run man
When he got to 142, Gautam Gambhir had 1000 runs for the calendar year, not bad for someone who didn’t play his first Test of 2008 till Sri Lanka in July. It was also some achievement for a man who contemplated giving up the game after the disappointment of being overlooked for the 2007 World Cup squad.Mighty Mishra
As a contest, it was the most unequal one possible. The gargantuan figure of Flintoff, who had clocked 151 kph at one point during the day, up against the diminutive Amit Mishra. Mishra survived 11 balls against England’s colossus and even affected one cheeky loft over the slips for four. Kudos too for an emphatic straight six off Monty Panesar.Oh, Brother!
After failing to dismiss Sachin Tendulkar on the final day in Chennai, Graeme Swann was understandably jubilant at getting him cheaply here going for an awkward paddle-sweep. “He’s the one wicket you prize more than any,” said Swann, who also admitted that his brother had given him some stick for not being able to do more in Chennai.Don’t let the sun go down
If crowds don’t understand some of cricket’s rules, you can scarcely blame them. Once you come off for bad light during the half-hour extension at the end of play, you can’t go back out. Within a minute of the English openers retreating to the dressing room, we had the brightest sunshine of the day, and no chance whatsoever of play resuming. The law is indeed an ass.

New Zealand seek balance with Mills at No. 7

Daniel Vettori, the New Zealand captain, is pondering the option of using two spinners and promoting Kyle Mills to No. 7 for the opening ODI against Australia

Daniel Vettori, the New Zealand captain, is pondering the option of using two spinners and promoting Kyle Mills to No. 7 for the opening ODI against Australia on February 1 in Perth. It might be a risky move, but Vettori felt playing five frontline bowlers was the right approach for a team hurt by the absence of allrounder Jacob Oram.Vettori’s plan might alter depending on the conditions at the WACA, but he was pleased with Patel’s efforts in the disappointing warm-up loss to the Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra. Patel took 2 for 51 off 10 overs in the hosts’ successful chase of 272. “I was really pleased with how Jeetan bowled – obviously his last over went for a little bit – but he bowled well and he comes into play,” Vettori told . “If you’re always continually trying to chase the result or get back on the horse then it makes it very difficult so we wanted to win today to go on to Perth with a little bit of confidence.”We bowled really poorly [in Canberra], that’s something we’re going to have to lift. We just bowled both sides of the wicket, we looked like we didn’t have a plan when we turned up to bowl, and guys just turned up and hoped for things to happen.”We hope that our planning will give us an advantage, we hope that we’ll be able to be quite insightful in our thinking in terms of how to attack some players. We just have to be at the absolute pinnacle of our game to beat Australia.”The team’s bowling and fielding – they spilled at least three chances – also left coach Andy Moles unimpressed. “It’s a bit of a wake-up call more than anything else. We know we’re in for a tough tour, and we’ve spoken about it,” Moles said. “It’s disappointing we didn’t show a little bit more fight in the field, collectively, and it’s disappointing that they need a wake-up call.”We’re looking forward to getting to Perth and showing some spirit.” Moles said the heat, which soared to nearly 37ºC in Canberra, was a concern, but said his team would have to cope with oppressive conditions in Perth as well.Another worry was the fitness of wicketkeeper-opener Brendon McCullum, who battled his hip strain to score 114 off 130 balls in Canberra, ending a recent run of poor scores. McCullum, though, did not take the field during the chase. He will undergo further treatment, but if he is unfit to keep, Gareth Hopkins, called up as cover, would come into the top six at the expense of either Neil Broom and Grant Elliott.”I’d rather be involved in the series just as a batter than not play at all,” McCullum said. “That’s my role, wicketkeeper-batsman, and when you’re not wicketkeeping it does make it harder and does affect our balance.”But you’ve got to look at long-term plan as well and I’ve just got to make sure I’m sensible about what’s right and wrong and don’t try to force it too much. I’m used to trying to operate at a strike rate of 120-130, so to not be able to play like that was a little frustrating.”I’ve been looking for an ugly hundred for a while to try and find the tempo with which I have to bat at. That was the one positive, I wasn’t feeling that great but still managed to get through to a score.”I’m trying to bat a similar way, and if I can get a pitch with more pace and try to find my timing a bit better I’ll end up scoring quicker anyway. I’ve got to flick the switch from trying to score 70-80 off 40 balls to make sure I bat 35-40 overs and make a contribution that way.”

Everton: Fans slam Rondon vs United

Salomon Rondon came in for criticism from some Everton fans for his first-half performance against Manchester United.

Everton were looking to pull off their first Old Trafford victory since 2013 and move to the top of the Premier League table, for a few hours at least.

Manchester United had the same goal in mind and were also looking for a response to last weekend’s shock defeat to Aston Villa.

Rondon continues to lead the line

Rafael Benitez made one change from the win over Norwich City last time out, with Anthony Gordon replacing Alex Iwobi at left midfield in the 4-4-1-1 shape.

Rondon, then, kept his place up front amid the ongoing absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison.

It was the Colombian’s third start since his summer move from Chinese Super League outfit Dalian Yifang.

Lucas Digne set him away in the early stages of the game, but he couldn’t get his shot away before Raphael Varane arrived and the ball was blocked behind.

According to the half-time stats, he touched the ball just 15 times in total during the first 45, fewer than goalkeeper Jordan Pickford (19).
