Off-colour UP succumb to Vidarbha

The results from the sixth day of the Ranji Trophy one-day tournament 2008-09

Cricinfo staff20-Feb-2009Central ZoneNineties by Pranay Sharma and Rajesh Bishnoi helped Rajasthan ease to a five-wicket win over Madhya Pradesh at the Emerald High School Ground in Indore. The victory was built on a second-wicket stand of 158 between the pair and the target of 240 was overhauled fairly comfortably, despite the loss of two late wickets. Bishnoi’s 94 was the more aggressive knock as it came off 93 balls – including three sixes – while Pranay’s 92 came off 144. Madhya Pradesh were boosted by an aggressive knock by Murtaza Ali, who smashed 86 off 80 balls but he didn’t get the required support as none of the others passed fifty.Uttar Pradesh suffered their first loss in the tournament after their batting let them down against Vidarbha at the Maharani Usha Raje Trust Ground. After opting to bat, UP managed only 191 and the only notable performances were Tanmay Srivastava’s fifty and Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 42. Vidarbha were jolted early on when RP Singh trapped captain Faiz Fazal lbw in the first ball of the chase. Sanjoy Binkar’s unbeaten 77 held the innings together and he was involved in two half-century stands – 68 with Amit Gajanan Paunikar and 74 with Ravi Jangid. Vidarbha coasted him by five wickets with just under ten overs remaining and in the process recorded their first win.

Sepp van den Berg is Liverpool’s future star

Despite having scored more goals in the Premier League than any other team so far this season, Liverpool have managed to concede six times in their opening seven league games, more than the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Brighton & Hove Albion.

In the centre-back position, Jurgen Klopp currently has Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate, Nat Phillips and Joe Gomez at his disposal.

One centre-back that Liverpool currently have out on loan is Sepp van den Berg, who is spending the season with Championship side Preston North End.

Liverpool signed Van den Berg back in the 2019 summer transfer window from Dutch club PEC Zwolle for a fee of £1.71m. Since then, the defender, who is currently valued at £2.25m according to Transfermarkt, has made 23 appearances for the U23 side and just four senior appearances.

Since arriving at Deepdale, van den Berg has made 14 appearances for the club across all competitions, managing to grab two goals in the process.

Interestingly, van den Berg, who has been described as a player with “magnificent energy” by Frankie McAvoy, has only played in the centre-back position on two occasions for Preston, both coming in the Carabao Cup.

In the Championship, the 19-year-old has been playing either as a right-back or a right-midfielder, showing just how versatile he can be on the pitch at such a young age.

Taking this into account, we feel that his versatility could well put him in a good position to return to Liverpool after his loan spell ends and potentially become a regular first-team player for the Reds at some point in the future.

Given how Gomez has only played 13 minutes of action in the Premier League so far this season, coming off the bench on two occasions, this says to us that he isn’t towards the top of the pecking order for centre-backs at the moment at Liverpool.

However, he has been a key member of the Reds in the past and has plenty of similarities to van den Berg. For starters, they are both versatile defenders with plenty of athletic traits, while crucially, they’ve now both progressed well in the Football League.

Before penning terms with Liverpool, Gomez progressed through the ranks at Charlton, an experience that has clearly played a vital part in his development.

Should the Dutchman’s progression continue, we feel that there is every chance that van den Berg could become the club’s next Gomez and even join him in the Liverpool defence.

If the teenager can prove to Klopp that he is capable of playing in numerous positions on the pitch, it will make him very useful member of the squad.

Scoring at one run per hour

The Plays of the day from the fourth day of the third Test between South Africa and Australia in Cape Town

Mitchell’s déjà vu
In Johannesburg, Mitchell Johnson was stranded on 96 as he lost PeterSiddle and Ben Hilfenhaus in consecutive deliveries and there was amoment of horror for Johnson as the same thing threatened to happenagain in Cape Town. Johnson was on 95 and at the non-striker’s endwhen once more two wickets fell in a row. Andrew McDonald and Siddlewere both caught at silly point off inside-edges onto their padsagainst Paul Harris and with two balls left in the over and twobatsmen to come, Johnson must have been panicking. But Bryce McGaindid the right thing and blocked out the last two balls and Johnsonbrought up his first Test century next over with a six smashed overmidwicket off Dale Steyn.1rph
One run per hour. That’s the rate at which Simon Katich was travellingat drinks in the morning session. He began the day on 44 and by thetime the first hour was up he had progressed to 45. His only run forthat first hour came when he scampered through for a single when hewas dropped by Harris at gully off the bowling of Steyn and rarely didKatich look like adding any further runs. He was looking exhausted atthe end of a long tour and with Michael Hussey hardly racing at theother end, the pair did their best to put the “dead” back in deadrubber.Harris gets heated
There has been a distinct lack of on-field nastiness in this series soit was a surprise to see Harris and Michael Clarke engage in a verbalstoush as the dead rubber came to a close. Harris has picked up Clarkefour times over these six Tests and the pair exchanged words as Clarketicked through the 30s without looking entirely convincing againstHarris. It was the South Africans who ended up on the wrong end of thebanter. At the finish of the over in question, Harris had a loud lbwshout against McDonald and he talked a clearly unconvinced JacquesKallis into asking for the referral. The ball was clearly sliding downleg and it was impossible not to think that Harris’ judgment had beenclouded by the tension leading up to it.Steyn gets Harris’ man
Kamran Akmal is the only man Harris has dismissed more often in Teststhan Clarke but it was another familiar tormentor who finally removedClarke for 47. Steyn collected Clarke for the fifth time in the pastfew months when Clarke played the ball onto his leg and it trickledback onto the stumps. It was a successful day for Steyn against somerecognisable foes. No bowler has dismissed Hussey more often thanSteyn, who removed him for the fourth time when he forced a leadingedge that bobbed up to JP Duminy in the gully.Farewell to a familiar face
Steve Bucknor bowed out of Test cricket today at the end of his 128thTest match, a world record number of appearances. It’s quite anachievement, considering that when he began his international career20 years ago the only such record in his sights was the number ofTests officiated by a West Indian umpire: the 31 that Douglas Sang Huestood in from 1962 to 1981. Earlier in the match the ICC presentedBucknor with a painting of him by Richie Ryall, the former WesternProvince wicketkeeper, and today he was given a guard of honour byboth teams as he walked out onto the field after tea, for what wouldbecome his final session of Test cricket. Bucknor now heads home tothe Caribbean to stand in his final two international matches in theongoing ODI series between West Indies and England.

Celtic: McAvennie wants ‘leader’ signed

Celtic need to recruit some ‘big, confident players’ to address their defensive frailties.

That’s according to ex-Hoops star Frank McAvennie, who was speaking to Football Insider.

The lowdown

Celtic added Carl Starfelt, Josip Juranovic, Liam Scales, Osaze Urhoghide and Cameron Carter-Vickers to their defensive ranks during the summer transfer window.

Combined, the five deals wound up costing the club just under £8million.

But despite investing in reinforcements, Celtic have struggled defensively of late.

They’ve kept only two clean sheets since August, the first against Ross County in the Premiership and the second against second-tier Raith Rovers.

What’s more, they’ve shipped four goals in their both of their Europa League matches so far.

The latest

McAvennie slammed Celtic’s ‘awful’ record and called for the addition of more ‘experience’ across the backline.

“I want to see a leader, Celtic need some more leaders on that pitch,” he told the outlet. “The defensive record is awful.

“No disrespect to the players who are already there but we fall apart without the likes of Kyogo [Furuhashi] and [Callum] McGregor.

“We need more experience at left and right-back and probably another centre half.”

McAvennie added that the defence is what’s currently holding back Ange Postecoglou’s team.

“A good defence is the key,” he said. “There must be some big, confident players out there who we can sign.

“He’s out there and I want him signed. That’s what I want to see.

“Middle to front I have no problem. The defence still needs a lot of work.”

The verdict

There’s no doubt that Celtic look vulnerable, but club officials will surely be hoping the upcoming return of Christopher Jullien more or less solves the problem.

They cannot afford to just keep throwing money at the issue, especially without the structure of a permanent CEO or Director of Football in place to properly plot their moves.

Jullien brings that certain composure that will settle the whole defensive unit, and he could perhaps form a solid partnership with Carter-Vickers. Patience will be required at first, though, because he’s been out an awfully long time.

Wins for Chennai and Kolkata in warm-ups

A round-up of some of the warm-up matches for the IPL teams

Cricinfo staff15-Apr-2009Kings XI Punjab lost by a narrow margin of 10 runs against the Warriors in their warm-up game in Port Elizabeth, as they faltered in pursuit of a competitive 151. Colin Ingram set up the Warriors innings with an aggressive, unbeaten 57, which included five fours and two sixes. Punjab struggled in the field, dropping five catches though they will be encouraged by the performance of their fast bowler VRV Singh who finished with 4 for 24. Taruwar Kohli led the Punjab response with a quickfire 36 but was short of support from the other batsmen, like Simon Katich (12) and Kumar Sangakkara (16), who got starts but failed to consolidate. Warren Bell took 2 for 22 as Punjab, requiring 19 off the last over, managed just eight.Last year’s finalists Chennai Super Kings registered a comfortable 42-run win over the Dolphins in Durban. Suresh Raina top scored for Chennai with 72 and Parthiv Patel contributed 43 as their team piled up 181 for 7. Imraan Khan was the most effective of the Dolphins bowlers, taking 3 for 11. In response, the local team were skittled out for 139 as Muttiah Muralitharan bagged 3 for 32.In their set of warm-ups, Kolkata Knight Riders lost the first game against Free State by two wickets off the last ball. Defending 140, they managed to stretch the home team to the last over but their score eventually proved inadequate. In the second game, though, they bounced back to win by 59 runs after Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum scored 76 each to post a formidable 204. Free State, in reply, could only manage 145 for 7.
