Rangers: Connor Goldson must be sold

The future of Rangers centre-back Connor Goldson remains up in the air, with his deal set to expire at the end of the season.

Former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has suggested that the club are happy for him to leave as they have not resolved his contract situation, telling Football Insider: “I find it strange that Rangers haven’t sorted this.

“The fact that they have let it run down this far is a concern. They must know he can agree a pre-contract in January. Maybe Rangers are happy for him to move on, otherwise it makes no sense why they haven’t offered him a deal.”

Gio must axe Goldson

New manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst could win Rangers fans over instantly by brutally axing Goldson in the January transfer window. If the 28-year-old does not want to be at Ibrox in the long-term, he should be shipped out of the club as quickly as possible, which is why the Dutchman should look to sell him in the winter to make some money before he leaves on a free transfer.

The £27k-per-week defender came out after the 3-1 defeat to Hibernian on Sunday and admitted that the team has lost ‘a bit of hunger’.

He said: “We need something to change. We need a spark. I don’t want to say this, but we’ve lost a bit of hunger. We are champions and some think they don’t need to work as hard. That’s crept in all season.”

Former Scotland international Kris Commons labelled his comments as embarrassing and accused him of a defeatist attitude.

Football Scotland quote him as saying: “Connor Goldson’s comments after the game yesterday were an absolute embarrassment. He’s supposed to be one of the leaders in this Rangers squad.

“He claimed the match was as good as over at half-time, with Rangers trailing 3-1. Two goals down at half-time and he’s waving the white flags to surrender? Seriously?”

It is difficult to argue with his assessment of Goldson’s quotes. The centre-back is one of the senior players in the squad and he is coming out with worrying comments like those, whilst his contract is running down and nothing is being done to resolve the issues around his future.

Supporters will surely want players who are 100% committed to playing for Rangers and giving their very best out on the pitch. Goldson’s contractual situation and his recent comments both appear to suggest that he does not fit into either of those descriptions, and that is why Van Bronckhorst could appease plenty of the fanbase by cashing in on the 28-year-old in January.

Vettori hopes for improved showing on limited-overs leg

Daniel Vettori didn’t have a lot to smile about yesterday, but was hoping to start afresh with the two Twenty20s against Sri Lanka after the defeats in the Test matches

Daniel Vettori didn’t have a lot to smile about yesterday, but was hoping to start afresh with the two Twenty20s against Sri Lanka after the defeats in the Test matches. Though New Zealand were outclassed in both Tests, there is still plenty of limited-overs cricket for them before returning home – the two Twenty20s preceding the tri-series, also featuring India, with the Champions Trophy in South Africa to follow. This New Zealand side is better suited to one-day cricket, having won six and drawn one of their last eight series, including come-from-behind wins over England and West Indies. However, they have struggled in one-dayers in Sri Lanka, winning ten of 27 games. Vettori is hopeful of improving that record.”I’d say we’ve been stronger in the limited-overs format, definitely,” he said. “It suits a few of our guys better. The experiences out here will have strengthened a few of the players for the limited-overs series There’s no doubt this is a good group of batsmen and I have high hopes of them.”New Zealand have some personnel changes, such as fast bowlers Kyle Mills, Shane Bond and Ian Butler and relative rookies Brendon Diamanti and Neil Broom, but the core group stays the same. “There’s an air of confidence about the team when it comes to this format,” said Vettori, “And I hope we’ll see a turnaround in our limited-overs performance. We need to win these games as we build up to the Champions Trophy. It’s a short and sharp tournament and you need to hit it running.”New Zealand will welcome back Bond, who, Vettori confirmed, will mark his international return in Wednesday’s first Twenty20. Bond’s departure to the ICL in 2008 was as significant as when Richard Hadlee stepped down in 1990, and while Vettori was quick to allow Bond some breathing room, he knew how important this man was.”I don’t want to put too much pressure on the guy because I can see it building from a distance,” Vettori said. “People are viewing him as a sort of saviour to some recent woes but I think we need to let Shane relax and build his way back into the team.” Bond will be a vital player for New Zealand in the 50-over games. In 67 ODIs he has taken 125 wickets at the phenomenal average of 19.32.New Zealand cricket fans have accepted, if reluctantly, that their team can seriously compete in one-day and Twent20 cricket, because from the depths of No. 7 in the ICC Test rankings there’s not much room for optimism. Though his immediate aim was to gee this team up for the limited-overs fixtures, Vettori clearly had an eye on the home Tests against Pakistan in November. The two Tests in Sri Lanka were a thorough disappointment and Vettori, when he sits down with the selection panel on returning, will have his plate full. New Zealand does not boast a reservoir of second-tier players presenting a convincing case for selection and Vettori wanted to stick with these players ahead of Pakistan’s visit.”We’ve learned a lot. Our guys have faced some unorthodox bowlers that they don’t get back home, so for them to face that sort of bowling and to be successful, at times, is a very good experience,” he said. “They need to take that into the next Test series we face, against [Saaed] Ajmal and [Danish] Kaneria, who are difficult spin bowlers. The experience builds confidence.”

Casa do Chile

Stephen Moore has joined Lancashire from Worcestershire, which the batsman has represented since 2003.Mark Newton, Worcestershire’s chief executive, said that Moore had considered his position very carefully before deciding to move to another county. “Whilst we are very sorry to see him go, we wish him well and thank him for his contribution to Worcestershire Cricket. We are delighted the county has helped him to the fringe of full International honours and hope that he achieves his ultimate ambition in the years ahead.”The South-African born Moore, 28, is the fourth player to leave the county since the end of the season after Gareth Batty, Steven Davies and Simon Jones. Batty and Davies joined Surrey and Jones was released and signed up by Hampshire. Worcestershire failed to win a match during the Championship in 2009.Moore was excited at moving to Lancashire, which offers him the prospect of first division county cricket next year. “To join a club of Lancashire’s stature is a fantastic opportunity for me at this stage in my career,” he said. “I am confident that the club will provide me with the platform to grow and develop as a player and person.”Mike Watkinson, Lancashire’s cricket director, welcomed Moore on board. “Stephen is a highly regarded batsman with a proven track record in county cricket, who will add quality to our top order in all forms of cricket,” Watkinson said. “Not only will Stephen’s arrival strengthen our batting unit but he will compliment those younger members of the squad who we see taking on more responsibility in the future.”In 2008, after averaging 55.80 for Worcestershire as they earned promotion in the Championship and touring New Zealand with the England Lions, Moore had been mentioned as a potential England player. However, after being overlooked last year, Moore said he had been left “scratching his head” following some of the decisions made by the national selectors. His form was not as successful this year; he scored 738 first-class runs this past season with one century and five fifties.

Liverpool fans slam Sadio Mane v Everton

Taking to Twitter, many Liverpool fans weren’t impressed with the performance of winger Sadio Mane as their side strolled to a 4-1 win over Merseyside rivals Everton.

Jurgen Klopp’s side well and truly opened the floodgates on Wednesday night, bagging four at Goodison Park as they maintain their chase for the Premier League title.

Keeping up with rivals Manchester City and Chelsea, both of whom also won last night, the Reds eventually sealed what was an all-important derby day win thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah (two), Jordan Henderson and Diogo Jota.

Demarai Gray briefly pulled one back for Everton and Rafael Benitez, briefly threatening a comeback at 2-1 just before half time, but Liverpool went on to cement their win with two more goals in the second period (BBC).

However, despite a memorable evening for the visitors, one man who failed to impress quite a few Reds supporters with his display was Mane.

Liverpool fans slam Mane…

The Senegal star, ranking as the joint lowest-rated Liverpool starter with 6.6/10 according to SofaScore, was “anonymous” in the eyes of some fans, with only Alisson and Diogo Jota taking fewer touches on the night among Klopp’s starting XI (SofaScore).

Whenever he did have the ball, Mane couldn’t do much with it, spurning one big chance and losing possession 16 times (SofaScore).

The 29-year-old also didn’t win a single aerial duel and lost the majority of his battles on the ground (SofaScore), leaving little wonder why many Liverpool fans weren’t particularly impressed with his “horrendous” display overall.

ExWHUemployee provides Ben Johnson update

ExWHUemployee has dropped a concerning update over West Ham United defender Ben Johnson following Saturday’s Premier League victory over Chelsea.

What’s the word?

In a recent post on The West Ham Way, the club insider revealed that the versatile 21-year-old is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring injury over the weekend.

Despite him going on to state that the ‘initial feeling’ was that Johnson didn’t suffer a ‘major tear,’ he did suggest that the full-back could be out for up to four weeks with his latest fitness setback.

West Ham fans will be gutted

News that Johnson could miss a large chunk of the hectic festive schedule will leave the West Ham fans feeling gutted, given his importance to the side.

The academy graduate has made 13 appearances for his boyhood club in all competitions this season, starting their last eight Premier League games, putting in a string of impressive displays along the way.

As per WhoScored, Johnson has averaged 2.1 tackles and 1.4 interceptions in the top-flight this term, placing him second and third when compared to his teammates for these metrics.

In addition to those eye-catching returns, he has also produced 2.8 clearances, won 0.6 aerial duels and made 0.4 crosses, highlighting his hugely effective displays for West Ham throughout 2021/22.

With a whopping seven games still to come in December alone for the Hammers against the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton, Johnson’s enforced absence will be a huge blow.

Moyes’ charges are currently sitting in fourth place in the Premier League table and fighting for a Champions League qualification spot, they will be devastated to lose their first-choice right-back for an extended period of time.

Seamers put PIA on top

A round-up of the second day’s action from the sixth round of matches from the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

Cricinfo staff10-Nov-2009Group APakistan International Airlines reached a dominant position in Faisalabad, as they gained a 121-run lead against National Bank of Pakistan. NBP began the day in a precarious position, at 55 for 5. Some resistance from the lower order, chiefly wicketkeeper Amin-ur-Rehman (36) and Wasim Khan (27), took them to 170, giving PIA a nine-run advantage on the first innings. Seamers Anwar Ali and Ali Imran grabbed four wickets each to hand PIA the edge after a disappointing performance with the bat on the opening day. In their second innings, PIA were boosted by an unbeaten 49 from opener Agha Sabir, who steered them to 112 for 2.Habib Bank Limited gained the upper hand on a truncated second day against Sui Southern Gas Corporation in Rawalpindi. Bilal Asad top scored with 45, but Habib Bank kept chipping away with regularity at the opposition, reducing them to 116 for 6 at stumps. Seamer Fahad Masood took 2 for 21, and was supported well by the rest of the bowling line-up.Karachi Whites, led by opener Naved Khan’s unbeaten 108, snatched the advantage against Lahore Shalimar at the Gaddafi Stadium. Naved was assisted in a 151-run third-wicket stand by Atif Ali, and the pair helped Karachi reach 233 for 3 at stumps, only 24 adrift of Lahore’s first-innings score. Naved played a patient knock, eating up 253 deliveries, and striking ten fours. Atif, too, took his time but ensured a foundation for a substantial lead was laid.Fourteen wickets fell on the second day of the contest between Pakistan Customs and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited in Islamabad, making amends for the absence of any action due to rain on the first. SNGPL held a slight advantage at stumps, having bowled out Pakistan Customs for 169 and reaching 77 for 4 in reply. Their bowling effort was a collective one. Medium-pacer Rizwan Akbar grabbed 3 for 44, while three others grabbed two wickets each. Tahir Mughal dented PIA in their response, bagging three wickets but Ali Waqas is going strong with an unbeaten 39.Water and Power Development Authority, boosted by important contributions from almost all their batsmen, amassed 446 for 8 in their first innings against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited in Gujranwala. Opener Adil Nisar made 104 and was backed up by half-centuries from Aamer Sajjad and Ahmed Said as WAPDA built on the strong platform they had laid on the first day. For ZTBL, Kashif Daud and Mohammad Khalil bagged three wickets each. At stumps, ZTBL were 16 without loss.Group BSeventeen wickets fell on a extraordinary day at the Abbottabad Cricket stadium as the home side took first-innings points against Peshawar. Abbottbad began the day on 34 for 3, but were bowled out for 111, courtesy twin five-fors from fast bowlers Nauman Habib and Riaz Afridi. More drama was to follow as left-arm fast man Junaid Khan stole the show for Abbottabad with 6 for 43. Barring opener Haroon Ahmed (46), none of the Peshawar batsmen managed to reach double figures as they folded for 81 in 32.4 overs. The Abbottabad openers brought a calm end to the day, guiding them home to 16 for no loss at stumps.Right-arm fast bowler Tanvir Ahmed ensured table-toppers Karachi Blues took first-innings points against bottom-placed Lahore Ravi at the National Stadium in Karachi. His five-for helped bowl out the opposition for 190, as none of the Lahore batsmen managed a defining innings. With the lead of 107, Karachi were pegged back by Junaid Zia before Asad Shafiq and Asim Kamal guided them safely to stumps at 102 for 4.A well-composed hundred from left-hander Naved Yasin helped Multan extended their domination against Hyderabad at the Niaz Stadium. Resuming on 127 for 1, Multan went past Hyderabad’s first-innings total of 194 with ease. Yasin then put Multan in pole position hitting 10 boundaries during his 192-ball 111. With Rizwan Haider looking in good touch with an unbeaten 47, Multan may fancy an innings win as well.Faisalabad’s No. 8 batsman Zulqarnain was in terrific form as Quetta failed to capitalise on their overnight advantage in the basement battle in Sargodha. Resuming on 234 for 7, Zulqarnain smashed six fours and two sixes during his 146-ball 77 to strengthen Faisalabad, lifting them to 350. He then provided them with the first breakthrough during Quetta’s reply, sending back opener Shoaib Khan jnr early. Quetta went on to lose two more wickets to finish nervously 64 for 3.The Rawalpindi batsmen found Rauf Akbar’s pace too hot to handle as they managed 218 for 8 against Islamabad at the Diamond Club Ground. After the first day’s play was washed out, Rauf gave Islamabad a flying start after they opted to field. He sent back the openers in quick time before a 92-run partnership for the third wicket between Zahid Mansoor (37) and Adnan Mufti (79) held up the charge. He returned to remove them both to finish with 4 for 78, with a five-for very much on the cards.
