Lynn McConnell25-Dec-2009New Zealand women’s star bowler on their Northern Hemisphere tour last winter, Rachel Pullar of Otago, has ruled herself out of consideration for the New Zealand team for the World Series of Women’s Cricket that starts at Lincoln University at the weekend.Pullar’s absence will be a significant blow for the TelstraClear White Ferns as they attempt to compete with Australia, India and England in the four-way series. It is understood she intends on travelling overseas. She was easily the most dominant bowler on New Zealand’s tour, taking 21 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 6.76.Also missing from the side is Fiona Fraser who has a back problem that has ruled her out for the remainder of the summer while Anna Corbin shattered a thumb at practice last week and is also out for the rest of the season. With Kathryn Ramel’s retirement, New Zealand will only be able to call on four players who remain from the CricInfo Women’s World Cup-winning side of 2000 – Emily Drumm, Rebecca Rolls, Haidee Tiffen and Nicola Payne. What that does, however, is provide more opportunities for the New Zealand A players who are taking part in a series of warm-up games, starting with a match against New Zealand at the High Performance Centre tomorrow. Two members of the squad of 14 will be added to the New Zealand side for the match. Other games follow against India on Wednesday, Australia on Friday and England on Saturday. The first match of the WSWC is to be played at Bert Sutcliffe Oval on Sunday between New Zealand and Australia. The New Zealand squad for tomorrow’s game is: Nicola Payne, Rebecca Rolls, Emily Drumm, Kate Pulford, Haidee Tiffen, Aimee Mason, Frances King, Nicola Browne, Louise Milliken.White Ferns coach Mike Shrimpton said there were five or six names on the selectors’ short list but the A team had everything to play for. The key thing for the selectors would be assessing which players were best equipped to make the step up.”There’s no shortage of talent, it’s just knowing who to pick,” he said.

Marsh gives 'credit to the boys'

The Australia Under-19 captain has commended the team effort that gave his side a narrow two-wicket victory against Sri Lanka in the World Cup semi-final

Australia Under-19 captain Mitchell Marsh has commended the team effort that gave his side a narrow two-wicket victory against Sri Lanka in the World Cup semi-final. After bowling Sri Lanka out for 205 in 48.2 overs, Australia faltered in the chase, losing regular wickets before getting across the line with nine balls to spare.”I think run-chases in finals are always pretty tough and they’re the sort of games you never win two or three down,” Marsh said. “It’s a credit to the boys at the end who stuck to their guns and got us over the line.”Marsh led from the front, scoring 97 of 110 balls, including twelve fours. Even as wickets fell around him, he continued to keep the score ticking over, eventually finding able support in wicketkeeper Tom Triffitt, who made 50. The two put on 78 for the sixth wicket and Marsh noted the importance of the crucial stand, which rescued them from 93 for 5.”When you get those sorts of scores you always want to go on and make hundreds but it was a pretty good catch and at the end of the day it was just important for us to get the win,” Marsh said. “Being 5 for 93 at one stage, I think we’ve done pretty well to win and my partnership with Triff [Triffitt] towards the end there was pivotal and that’s what you need in these sorts of games.”The form of the Australian fast bowlers through the tournament has been impressive and Marsh said he was pleased with their efforts to pin down Sri Lanka to 205. “You always want to bat first on tracks like that but credit to the way the boys came out and the attitude of the fielders and bowlers,” Marsh said. “In these sorts of games if you can bowl consistently good areas you’re always going to get wickets and that’s what the two big guys [Josh Hazlewood and Alister McDermott] did at the start.”Marsh also said he had set his sights on the final against Pakistan on Saturday. He said he was excited about the challenge ahead and hoped to return home with the big prize. “Pakistan’s going to be a tough encounter, they’re a very well-drilled side and if we can just keep doing the basics right then I think we’re in for a good day Saturday,” he said. “They’ve got a fair bit of experience at the top of the order and a few good spinners so we’ll look to counter them and hopefully we can do the job.”

Wolves: Lage must unleash Trincao

Wolverhampton Wanderers will be back in action tonight as they travel to the North West to take on Manchester United at Old Trafford in their first fixture of 2022.

Bruno Lage’s side will have a challenge on their hands to break the five-game unbeaten run held by Ralf Rangnick since he took over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November.

Hwang Hee-Chan has been officially confirmed by the club to be out of the side until February, although there has been no precise date given on the winger’s return, it has opened up an opportunity for Barcelona loanee, Francisco Trincao to make his mark on the team and put in a performance to seal a starting position in the team moving forward into the second half of the season.

Unlike his South Korean teammate, Trincao has failed to hit the ground running at Molineux with only one goal scored in the EFL Cup compared to Hwang’s four goals in the Premier League that have reportedly earned him a permanent deal with the Midlands club.

The Wolves manager has weighed in on the slow start for the 22-year-old;

“Sometimes he needs to understand the game better, how we start. That’s the biggest thing he can learn.

“When he starts, the teams are there and they go until the end of the game. Always with a good tempo and a good rhythm.

“That’s the thing. When you come from outside, you need to adapt.”

The £22.5k-per-week gem will now likely be given the opportunity to take the reigns in the forward line to get a good run of form going in Hwang’s absence, and it would be an excellent chance for the youngster if he starts against Manchester United tonight. After all, he could cause problems for the Manchester side, putting in an impressive performance for the team and the manager.

If he starts, the Portuguese has the ability to get Molineux rocking and the following review from former Braga academy coach Jose Carvalho Araujo explains why:

“He is not so fast or intense but I think he has a little more magic,” Araujo began.

“He was an amazing kid, very skinny. Physically, he was very poor but with the ball he was magic, doing tricks, so skilful.”

Daniel Podence also competes with the Barca loanee for a position on left-wing, and like Hwang, has been more effective in his delivery going forward this season with the 26-year-old scoring two goals and bagging two assists this season. This competition adds even more pressure to Trincao to seize every opportunity given to him by Lage.

Wolves dropped into ninth in the Premier League after Brighton beat Everton 3-2 on Sunday afternoon, but if they could cause an upset at Old Trafford by taking all three points out of their difficult clash, they could steal back 8th and close in on Manchester United in 7th.

Villa fans react to Aaron Hickey update

Aston Villa were thought to be leading Celtic in the race to sign left-back Aaron Hickey this month.

However, according to The Athletic’s Gregg Evans, a move for the Bologna man is now unlikely, which has had a number of Villa supporters talking.

Steven Gerrard’s side have made a start to their January business by agreeing to sign Phillipe Coutinho on loan with an option to buy from Barcelona.

Following the move for the 29-year-old, Evans revealed that next on the agenda is a full-back, with another goalkeeper and midfielder also on the club’s wish list.

Hickey was an option being considered at Villa Park, but Evans admitted on Saturday morning that a January swoop for the Scottish youngster isn’t looking likely. He added that the club may revisit their interest in the summer and are looking at alternative options.

The 19-year-old has been hailed for his “quality and personality” by Sinisa Mihajlovic, his manager at Bologna, and the boss has demonstrated such faith by often including the teenager in his starting line-up this season.

Villa fans react

Here is what these Villa fans had to say in reply to Evans’ post, with many left unimpressed and others believing the club could now move on to Everton’s Lucas Digne, who has also been linked.

Players' chief warns of Twenty20 match-fixing

Tim May, the chief executive of the international players union FICA, has warned that Twenty20 cricket is ‘ripe for corruption’

Revelations about Hansie Conje’s match-fixing rocked the world game•AFP

Tim May, the chief executive of the international players union FICA, has warned that Twenty20 cricket is ‘ripe for corruption’.May, a former Australian offspinner, told magazine “Lord Condon, who headed up the ICC’s Anti-corruption and Security Unit, said only last year that we can never think we have this cancer beaten. Twenty20 is just ripe for corruption – the shorter the game the more influence each particular incident can have. So I think it opens up a great deal of opportunities for the bookmakers to try and corrupt players into providing various different outcomes in the game, if not the result itself. Cricket needs to be very, very careful.”Cricket only recently emerged from a nasty episode of revelations about match-fixing when in 2000 Hansie Conje, then South Africa captain, admitted to taking money from bookmakers. It spiralled into a full enquiry headed by Condon’s team at the ICC. Since then the game has stayed clean but the rise of Twenty20 has created new vulnerable areas. In July last year Dave Richardson, the ICC general manager, said the ICC was ‘concerned’ and that the IPL will “inevitably attract the interest of match-fixers and people like that.”With Lalit Modi recently announcing that the second season of the Twenty20 Champions League will clash with the climax of the English domestic season, May also criticised the ‘arrogant’ decision making of the IPL executives.”The refusal to grant players the ability to review the security arrangements and the decision of the IPL and its franchises not to recognise or deal with any players’ managers or agents, is self-defeating. Its decision-making is very arrogant. The attitude is that they’re the only game in town, they’re the biggest game in town and, as long as they pay these huge amounts of money, they can do what they like. That may not always be the case.”Seeking avenues to protect the Test game, May said a Test championship would add much-needed context to the format but fears that political wrangling of the ICC members could prevent it from developing. “At the moment it’s just a mad scramble of bilateral series that mean nothing. A Test championship over a period of one or two years would increase the value of those contests and make it possible to play significantly less cricket but maintain or increase commercial revenues,” he said.”The political nature of the ICC board and its members means it’s going to be a difficult concept to sell. There is an over-riding need for boards to be absolutely in control of their destiny, and going with a Test championship would hand over a lot of power to the ICC. A lot of boards don’t want to do this – that selfish mind-set isn’t in the best interests of the game.”Ahead of England’s departure to the UAE for two Twenty20s against Pakistan, the England offspinner Graeme Swann said the squad was fully aware of the dangers of match-fixing. “There are guys from the [ICC] Anti-Corruption Unit who travel all year round with us and everyone is fully educated about the dangers. It probably does go on in some form with some teams and some players, but you never know who it is. I certainly don’t think any of this England team could be considered match-fixers.”We haven’t been given any warnings specifically for this trip. You’d have to be an absolute idiot to do it.”
