Shaun Tait believes he has made the right decision to abandon first-class cricket and focus on the shorter formats after delivering the fastest ball ever recorded in Australia on Friday night. Tait’s third delivery in Australia’s Twenty20 win over Pakistan hit 160.7kph, a speed that has only been bettered by Shoaib Akhtar and Brett Lee since measurements became common.Tait had clocked 160kph before but this was his quickest ball and he maintained a consistent pace – he didn’t drop below 150kph in his opening two-over spell. The record on Australian soil was a fullish ball that Imran Farhat missed, and Tait expended such energy that he stumbled and nearly fell over in his follow-through.He picked up Farhat with a 152kph ball that was edged to slip and for the rest of his overs hovered in the low to mid 150s. He said he would love to break Akthar’s mark of 161.3kph, set during the 2003 World Cup in South Africa, but Tait believes the effort required means that his speed peak can only last for a couple of balls per match.”It’s not something that I think about all the time but there’s only certain moments when you’re bowling, maybe even in your career, when you’ve probably got a chance to do it,” Tait said after the win. “Today it was my third ball and I had a crack the next ball after that just to have a go and I think after that it’s hard to get back up to that pace.”I think when everything’s feeling really good and your timing is right, I think you’ve only got two deliveries in a game to try and break a record like that. He was accurate, hard to get away and was named Man of the Match for his 3 for 13 from four overs. At his best, Tait can be one of the most dangerous Twenty20 bowlers in the world and he could be a valuable weapon for Australia at the ICC World Twenty20 in the West Indies in May.Tait has had his problems over the years, including a series of injuries and a self-inflicted break from the game due to physical and mental exhaustion in 2008. But by giving away four-day cricket – he hasn’t played a first-class match since December 2008 – and playing only Twenty20 and 50-overs games, he has allowed his body to deliver super-fast balls in short, sharp spells of severe impact.”I think it’s freshness, to be honest,” Tait said. “Looking back on it now, the decision that I’ve made at this stage to play the shorter form of the game has been a pretty solid one. I’ve been fresh for the majority of the games this season, apart from a couple maybe. I’m really enjoying the shorter form, the Twenty20s.”If Tait does head to the World Twenty20, he could form a fearsome and very fast attack along with Dirk Nannes, who hovered in the low 150s on Friday, and the proven danger-man Mitchell Johnson. Until then, Australia will hope for four more Twenty20 assaults from Tait to warm-up for the global tournament.

However, when it comes to outgoings, speculation has been mounting amid a feud at the club, and Rafael Benitez has been addressing rumours today.

What’s the word?

The Everton manager didn’t hold back in his FA Cup pre-match conference this afternoon when it came to talking about a particularly sensitive subject which has been a hot topic of conversation over the last month.

Benitez ranted to the media about the rumoured exit of Toffees left back Lucas Digne and his perspective of the situation, namechecking Everton legend Peter Reid as he responded to questions.

He stated: “I think it was very clear. I want to ask the question to every fan and former players – what Peter Reid will do and say when a players says he does not want to be there. It’s there, simple.

“A couple of conversations with (Digne), he told me what he thought. What do you expect the manager to do when the player is thinking about to leave? I will say again: the fans, former players. What will Peter Reid say if a player goes to the manager and says he does not want to be here?”

“I’m talking about myself also wanting everything from the players. When they do not do that, I can be upset.”

The manager’s passionate speech comes after an argument with the Toffees defender in training just over a month ago, and it has now escalated to Digne being linked with a move away and Benitez confirming in this conference that the player wants to leave Merseyside.

Fans will be gutted

Everton have been struggling to pick up results over the last few months, with just five league wins from the first half of the season, and losing a player as experienced as Digne is something that the fans will be gutted to see.

Some supporters have taken to social media platforms to express their disappointment at the France international being frozen out, with one fan tweeting: “It really is a shame to see Digne leave like this”

The defender has become a fan favourite at the club after offering 126 appearances, six goals and 20 assists for the Toffees during his three-and-a-half years with the Merseyside club, and it seems a real shame for the Goodison Park faithful that the situation had deteriorated to this extent.

Digne did make the bench for the first time in a month last week, but it will be interesting to see if Benitez puts aside his tumultuous relationship with the left-back by naming him in the line-up for the FA Cup game against Hull City tomorrow evening, after a poor defensive performance in his absence against Brighton.

وقال ميدو في تصريحات عبر حسابه على موقع التواصل الاجتماعي “تويتر”: “اللي بيحصل للنادي المصري عذاب لأي نادي ولا يتحمله أي نادي في العالم”.

وأضاف: “مش فاهم إيه سر التعنت الشديد في موضوع الملعب، إزاي تخلي فريق يلعب على بعد 700 كيلو من مدينته، ولسنوات طويلة!!”.

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly now enquired over the possibility of signing Benjamin Mensah in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Right wing-back wanted

It is no secret that Spurs are targeting a new right wing-back this month, with Adama Traore the most prominent name to be sounded out as a potential signing.

Matt Doherty has been heavily linked with a move back to Wolves, which would leave Antonio Conte a little light in that position, while Emerson Royal has not exactly impressed since his summer move, registering just one assist in 14 Premier League appearances from the right flank.

Thus, it is an area of the pitch that they will look to strengthen before the window closes.

The Latest: Mensah enquiry

As per Sky Sports (13 Jan, 12:46), the Lilywhites have now made an enquiry to Peterborough United about Mensah, who can play as a right wing-back as well as on the right of a traditional back four.

He would go straight into their U23 set-up, although there are a number of other clubs interested in his signature, so it’s not a done deal yet.

Mensah made his debut for the Posh in a 2-1 win at home to Cambridge United in the EFL Trophy back in 2019 at just 16 years of age, and went on to play in three more games in the tournament.

The Verdict: Preparing for first team

It will be good for the North London club to get in a player for the U23s who can play as a right wing-back, so that they can play a system that would best prepare them for the first team under Conte.

Of course, Mensah is one for the future, but the 19-year-old will have aspirations of breaking into the first team should he perform well – there aren’t exactly a whole host of world-class options in front of him.

Nonetheless, having made his senior debut at such a young age, he is certainly heading in the right direction, and could well turn out to be a gem that can be unearthed at Hotspur Way.

O palco da partida esteve fechado para visitas na véspera do jogo, mas o LANCE! conseguiu acesso ao local após muita insistência. A reportagem pôde conferir que a estrutura é de intimidar, feita para criar o típico clima de pressão em duelos diante de equipes argentinas, um verdadeiro caldeirão.

A expectativa é que 48 mil torcedores compareçam ao estádio. Nos últimos dias, muitas filas foram formadas em busca de ingressos. Na visita que fez ao estádio, a reportagem conferiu os torcedores passando horas na busca por ingressos. Os fãs do Rojo estavam muito animados e confiantes de que é possível criar a vantagem neste primeiro duelo.

– Espero a vitória, confio no objetivo da equipe, espero que possamos construir um bom resultado em casa – disse o jovem torcedor Santiago Gabriel, orgulhoso com a camisa do time do coração.

A torcida do Independiente deve fazer um grande mosaico de 360°, de acordo com o diário Olé. Os rubro-negros também estarão presentes, porém em menor número. Um fato muito curioso que chama atenção de qualquer visitante na cidade de Avellaneda é a proximidade dos estádios dos grandes rivais Independiente e Racing. As estruturas são separadas por uma distância muito pequena, de vista. Um funcionário dos Rojos, que preferiu não se identificar, brincou ao apontar para um muro do complexo esportivo do arquirrival, que fica de frente para o Estádio Libertadores de América.

– Aqui é a nossa casa, ali é o banheiro. Quando tem jogo, os torcedores vão ali no mictório (risos) – disse, divertindo-se.

O clima na região é de futebol raiz. As ruas no entorno dos estádios têm nomes de jogadores. Na terça-feira, os torcedores do Independiente formaram filas em busca de ingressos na via chamada Diego Milito, ídolo do Racing. Outro fato curioso é que ele tem um irmão também famoso, Gabriel Milito, ídolo do arquirrival. Os dois chegaram a duelar e até se desentenderam quando ainda eram jovens em lados opostos na Avellaneda. Só mais uma das incríveis histórias do futebol.

However, Yusuf Pathan and Ravindra Jadeja changed the complexion of the game completely in the last ten overs, off which West plundered 126 runs. Yusuf raced to a 24-ball 59, while Jadeja was unbeaten on 42 off 18 balls.The stuffing had been knocked out of Central and their token effort at chasing the mammoth 336 never took off. Despite early drops from Rohit Sharma and Dhawal Kulkarni, the top-order could not capitalize, and wickets fell at regular intervals. Munaf Patel was unlucky not to be rewarded in his tight spell, but Dhawal Kulkarni and Jayesh Odedra chipped in with two scalps apiece. Aston Villa have seemingly joined Leeds United in the race to sign Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Kamara profiled

Kamara is 22 years of age and is primarily a defensive midfielder who can also line out at centre-back. A France under-21 international, he has already made 145 appearances for his current employers and has even captained the club this season.

His contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign, though, and it seems as if Steven Gerrard could make a move, with Villa looking for midfield reinforcements following Marvelous Nakamba’s injury.

The Latest: Romano’s update

Romano took to Twitter on Saturday afternoon, confirming Villa’s links to Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.

However, he shared comments from Bianconeri manager Massimiliano Allegri, who claimed that the Italian giants won’t sanction any move for the Uruguayan this month.

Romano then added that Kamara is also on Johan Lange’s list when it comes to a new midfielder, tweeting: “Aston Villa are interested in Rodrigo Bentancur, confirmed as Tom Collomosse reported today. Juventus have not received any official bid yet – while Allegri today said they ‘won’t do any move in January’. Been told there’s also Boubacar Kamara in Aston Villa list.”

The Verdict: Shrewd move?

Kamara is valued at £22.5m, but due to his contract situation, you’d expect that Villa could land the versatile midfielder for a lot less than that in the final days of the January transfer window.

Should a move for Bentancur fail to materialise, Kamara could be an excellent alternative as he already has plenty of experience under his belt and is still in the early stages of his career. Also, he could improve Villa’s ball distribution, with his 90.7% passing success rate this season better than anyone to have started under Gerrard in the Premier League.

It seems as if the Uruguayan is Villa’s top midfield target, though, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens over the next eight days.
