Sri Lanka, Pakistan have point to prove

The preview of the first Test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan in Galle

Big PictureCertain pre-series predictions have come to nothing at the conclusion of the ODIs. Recent form suggested that Pakistan began the one-dayers with an upper hand before the first ball was bowled, but in the course of two weeks, the balance shifted quite comprehensively. As a result, the Test series begins with an air of caution for Pakistan, despite their form in Tests being reassuring. They’ll do well to remember that they are taking guard in a format that has rewarded them for their doggedness and consistency. Since the tour of England in 2010, they haven’t conceded a series in their next seven, that run including a 3-0 whitewash of the No.1 ranked England in February this year.Sri Lanka have failed to win a Test series since Muttiah Muralitharan’s retirement in 2010, casting doubts about their ability to challenge the best, let alone win. Wins against England and South Africa are indicators that they’re starting to learn how to win again. A 3-1 ODI series win has given them a kick too, but the question is if they can maintain that dominance in the Tests. That said, the Tests could be quite interesting as both sides have plenty to prove. While the aim will be to inch up the ICC Test rankings, both teams have an opportunity to establish Asian Test supremacy. That’s partly owing to India’s sudden freefall from the summit. After two ruthless thrashings away from home, India has slid to No.4, with just a slender lead on Pakistan. Pakistan will need to win comprehensively to go ahead of India. Sri Lanka have a lot of catching up to do to get to either side, but a series win will narrow that gap nevertheless.Change has been forced on Pakistan, with a new captain standing in for the banned Misbah-ul-Haq. Despite Misbah’s lack of form, it’s still not ideal for their build-up. Mohammad Hafeez isn’t among the runs himself, yet he’s been given the responsibility of leading the team. Fortunately, the nucleus hasn’t been disturbed. Their spin trio of Saeed Ajmal, Hafeez and Abdur Rehman remains. It will be interesting if Sri Lanka produces turning tracks, as it could be counter-productive for the hosts, who will rely primarily on one spinner. Since January 2010, Galle has been favourable for spinners and seamers, with 71 and 53 wickets respectively. Negating the spinners will be key to Sri Lanka’s chances, irrespective of the surface. The weather, and expected rains, will be a factor too.The DRS is unavailable for the Tests because the Sri Lankan board couldn’t secure the funding for it.Form guideSri Lanka LWLWL (Most recent first)
Pakistan WWWWWWatch out for…Azhar Ali: The only positive for Pakistan from the one-dayers, albeit a surprising one, considering he wasn’t a regular in Pakistan’s one-day plans. With the seniors misfiring, he took on more responsibility than expected. Unfortunately, due to lack of adequate support, he wasn’t able to close out games. He puts a price on his wicket, and Sri Lanka will be wary of that.Rangana Herath: Pakistan will have bad memories of facing him in Sri Lanka in 2009. With 15 wickets in three games, Herath was central to Pakistan’s bewildering collapses in Galle and Colombo. Herath was rested after the first two ODIs in Pallekele on this tour, keeping in mind his expected workload in the Tests. Expect plenty of overs from him.Pitch and conditionsThe weather in Galle has been hot and humid with no rain in the immediate build-up to the game. Both captains didn’t make any decisive comments about the pitch. Mahela Jayawardene said it looked a ‘true’ surface.Team newsNo apparent hints about the playing XIs either. Misbah’s absence leaves a slot open in the middle order. If Pakistan choose not to risk a debutant when they’re already struggling with the bat, then Faisal Iqbal could be recalled.Pakistan (probable) 1 Taufeeq Umar, 2 Mohammad Hafeez (capt), 3 Younis Khan, 4 Azhar Ali, 5 Faisal Iqbal, 6 Asad Shafiq, 7 Adnan Akmal (wk), 8 Abdur Rehman, 9 Saeed Ajmal, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Aizaz CheemaSri Lanka will have to decide if they want to play two seam-bowling allrounders, at the expense of a specialist seamer. If they decide against it, then Thisara Perera may have to sit out, since Nuwan Kulasekara has been recalled.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Tharanga Paranavitana, 3 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 4 Kumar Sangakkara, 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Suraj Randiv, 10 Rangana Herath, 11 Chanaka WelegederaStats and trivia Pakistan have played two Tests in Galle, winning the first (in 2000) and losing the next (2009) Rangana Herath has taken 30 wickets in six Tests in Galle, with three five-wicket hauls and a ten-wicket haul Mahala Jayawardene has aggregated 2017 runs in 19 matches in Galle, with seven centuriesQuotes”To be honest, we’re not thinking of that otherwise it will put unnecessary pressure on us. We’d like to take it one game at a time.”
“We need to give a lot of confidence to Suraj Randiv as he’s a top-class bowler, and hopefully this will be a breakthrough series for him.”

Danilo Avelar: nunca critiquei

Pedrinho: o amor sempre vence

Rain returns to hurt chances of result

Afternoon showers on day three put an outright result in serious doubt as only one session could be played out

The Report by Sidharth Monga02-Jul-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Misbah-ul-Haq declared after making a quick half-century and taking Pakistan past 550•AFP

Afternoon showers on day three put an outright result in serious doubt as only one session could be played out. In that session, Pakistan added 63 to their overnight 488 before declaring. In the next 70 minutes, Sri Lanka were put through a sterner test than the Pakistan openers, but they lost just one wicket.Pakistan’s quicks generated more response from the pitch than their Sri Lankan counterparts, but that didn’t translate into too much success as Tillakaratne Dilshan rode his luck. An overnight declaration on 488 was a consideration because of the weather: 45 overs had already been lost on day two, and forecast for the rest of the Test wasn’t the brightest either. However, Pakistan went for the scoreboard pressure, and declared only after they reached 550.Pakistan didn’t meander aimlessly, though: Misbah-ul-Haq went at a strike-rate of 82.50, much higher than his ODI career statistic, and Abdur Rehman hit two straight sixes in his 18 off 13. It took Pakistan little under an hour, and 12.4 overs, to score the 63 runs that took them past 550. In the process Misbah reached his 17th half-century, scoring 37 off 40 balls on the third morning. The fields were spread far out so he had to rely more on well-placed ones and twos as opposed to boundaries. Asad Shafiq and Adnan Akmal perished for the cause, but Rehman provided the required thrust with sixes off both spinners. Rangana Herath bowled one over fewer than a whole ODI innings.Ten minutes later, with runs on board already, Pakistan made a spirited start with the ball. Aizaz Cheema and Junaid Khan bowled faster and hit the seam more often than the Sri Lankan bowlers. As a result, they bowled more threatening deliveries in one spell than Sri Lanka did in the whole innings. Cheema began with a short-of-a-length delivery that reared towards Tharanga Paranavitana’s chest. Paranavitana never settled in, and was caught bat-pad to a Junaid delivery that seamed in. This was Paranavitana’s seventh duck in his 28th Test, a high rate for a Test opener.Tillakaratne Dilshan, at the other end, tried every trick in the book to get out, but the pitch and luck smiled on him benevolently. The seam movement in Junaid’s first over seemed to have rattled him, and he hoicked at the last ball of that over; the leading edge fell straight of mid-on. Until lunch, Dilshan kept slashing and flashing, twice edging short of the cordon, once bisecting keeper and first slip. In Saeed Ajmal’s first over, minutes before lunch, he survived a desperately close lbw shout when he was hit just above the knee roll bang in front and inside the crease. However, nothing stopped the aggressive Dilshan: he followed that lbw shout with two lofted fours, a response not too different to the rest of his innings. By lunch he had raced along to 46 off 54.Kumar Sangakkara was much more reassuring for Sri Lanka, clipping the first ball he faced for four, and continuing to do so. The only moment of concern at Sangakkara’s end arrived when he got a thick inside edge onto his pad, but it was too meaty for Azhar Ali at short leg to react in time.No play was possible after lunch.

CSA wary of administrative errors at CLT20 – Faul

South Africa’s biggest challenge in hosting this year’s Champions League T20 will be to avoid a repeat of the ongoing bonus scandal, which emerged after the country hosted the IPL in 2009, according to Jacques Faul

South Africa’s biggest challenge in hosting this year’s Champions League T20 will be to avoid a repeat of the ongoing bonus scandal, which emerged after the country hosted the IPL in 2009. Jacques Faul, CSA acting chief executive, said the board has to make sure it doesn’t “get into trouble again”, now that it is hosting another major event. The financial mismanagement of the IPL three years ago is still being felt after R4.7 million (US$671,000 approx) was paid out in bonuses to 40 CSA staff for additional work done. The money was not declared through the board and when it was picked up by CSA’s auditors, was found to be irregularly paid out. As a result, suspended chief executive, Gerald Majola is still awaiting a disciplinary hearing, four other staff members resigned and sponsors stayed away from the game last season, although they are starting to return.Faul said CSA cannot afford to make the mistakes of three summers’ ago again. “For us, hosting tournaments is not such a daunting task,” he said. “But we must be careful. I’m not sure if there will be bonuses paid. But I’m sure that if they are paid, the correct governance procedures will be followed.”What makes this tournament different to the IPL is that there are much smaller amounts of money involved, as Faul explained. “The money to be made for is what we will make from the profits as a shareholder. There is no other fee,” he said. Although stadiums will receive hosting fees, CSA will not be paid any extra money for hosting the CLT20, as was the case when they hosted the 2010 edition, which was a massive success. “The data indicated the CLT20 attendance in South Africa was the highest,” Faul said. The tournament was moved to South Africa this time because India were not able to host due to various logistical problems at the venues of their qualifying teams. “India has got a lot of venues, so they could have hosted it but the venues for the specific teams that qualified may not have been available. There is a problem for Mumbai in hosting a Pakistan team, there is a monsoon in Chennai and religious festival in Kolkata, so that only leaves Delhi,” Faul said. The inclusion of a Pakistan team this time, Sialkot Stallions, is a first for the CLT20.By contrast, South Africa have venues that are all available in that period. Although Faul said he could not confirm the venues because of CLT20 protocols, he expects that Johannesburg and Centurion are certainties because the teams based at those venues, Lions and Titans, have qualified for the event. ESPNCricinfo understands that Durban and Cape Town will be the other two host cities.Other South African towns will also come into contention for matches because there will be a qualifying phase before the main tournament. Faul confirmed that logistics for the qualifiers are yet to be worked on. It is understood that the IPL teams and the teams of the two shareholders, South Africa and Australia, will not have to qualify.Automatic entry into the main draw is not the only benefit of being a shareholder of the event for South Africa. The CLT20 is likely to return to the country in future because of South Africa’s stake in the competition. “The broadcasting agreement says that a minimum of five of the first ten editions of the tournament must be hosted in India,” Faul said. “So, India will look to offer it to us in years where their qualifying teams aren’t in a good situation to host it. As for Australia, the time-zone is just not right for the broadcaster.”

Cowan and Harris share honours in even battle

Two cricketers dominated the evenly-balanced opening day of the second unofficial Test match between England Lions and Australia A at Edgbaston

ScorecardJames Harris made regular inroads although was expensive•Getty Images

Two cricketers dominated the evenly-balanced opening day of the second unofficial Test match between England Lions and Australia A at Edgbaston. One of them, Glamorgan’s James Harris, has been badly hampered by injury over the last year and is not mentioned too often when the full England side’s seam bowling requirements are discussed; yet he proved the timeless value of accuracy to take six wickets, two of them lbw and two bowled, as the Lions attack enjoyed success, but also conceded runs too freely, on a pitch which had been trimmed since it offered the seamers plenty of help in Monday’s CB40 game. The other player to catch the eye was Australia A captain Ed Cowan, who made 73 when the Birmingham wicket was at its liveliest and the England bowlers fresh. Cowan did not seem to be the obvious candidate to open his country’s batting early last November until hundreds in four successive matches won him a place in the team for the Boxing Day Test. So if the players have a moment to relax with a beer after this game, maybe Harris can compare notes on the virtues of persistence with a man who is nearly eight years his senior and who has paid his dues to make it.For the moment, they are on opposite sides in a short series which has been well contested throughout. And no one has fought harder than Cowan, whose 186-ball monument to patience on the opening day of the second match followed his 99 in last week’s encounter at Old Trafford. The Australia A captain has worked hard to fashion a successful technique in which every stroke seems carefully calibrated; even favoured shots, like the cover drive, are removed from his repertoire if they carry unacceptable levels of risk.It was in this manner that Cowan proceeded carefully to his 116-ball fifty, hitting four boundaries and, somewhat incongruously, lifting a bouncer from Harris over fine-leg for six. He seemed set for a century too, until James Tredwell won an lbw decision from Neil Mallender when Cowan attempted a sweep. The batsman had almost to drag himself from the crease and appeared less than enamoured with the decision. He may have had a point.By the time Cowan was fourth out, the total was 186 and Harris had started his good day’s work. That had begun with his twelfth ball of the morning when Liam Davis shouldered arms and was lbw for a 15-ball 24. Four overs later, Michael Klinger was also lbw although on this occasion the batsman was on the front foot, not that it saved him from Tim Robinson’s finger.Cowan and Phillip Hughes saw Australia A through to lunch on 106 for 2, although they did so in contrasting styles: Hughes was adventurous, cover-driving Matt Coles for two fours and clipping Ben Stokes’ final ball before the break though midwicket for another boundary; Cowan stuck to the method he knew and it served him well.Ten overs after the break, Hughes gave Harris his third wicket when he drove all too loosely and was caught by Joe Root at short cover for a 51 which had been filled with fine strokes, yet had exhibited an all too fallible method. The afternoon might have gone even better for the Lions had not Joe Burns been dropped by Samit Patel off Chris Woakes, who was in the middle of a fine nine-over spell which cost just 12 runs.Either side of Cowan’s dismissal, Burns steadied the ship for the tourists, reaching tea on 27 in one of those innings where one looks up at the scoreboard and wonders quite how the batsman has acquired his runs. The final session of play at Edgbaston was the most attractive of the day. Australia scored 110 runs for the loss of five wickets, three of them to Harris, who bowled Burns for 29 immediately after the resumption when the batsman played across the line. At the other end, the Kent offspinner James Tredwell epitomised the parsimonious spinner and he too got his reward, first when Tom Cooper edged his arm-ball to Kieswetter, and then ten overs later when Mitchell Johnson also snicked a ball to the keeper, though this delivery did turn.By the end of the day Tredwell’s figures were 19-7-35-3 and he has been the Lions best bowler in the series, albeit that he seems fated to be the supporting actor rather than the leading man.Dominating the stage in the last hour were Tim Paine and, inevitably perhaps, Harris. The Australian wicketkeeper-batsman restored the game to some sort of balance with a well-judged innings of 59 and a sensible eighth-wicket partnership of 51 with Nathan Coulter-Nile, who made 24. Both batsmen fell to Harris, though, Coulter-Nile hitting across the line and Paine caught down the leg side. These dismissals proved once and for all that it was to be the Welsh seamer’s day and he was honest enough to admit in the aftermath of success that other bowlers had deserved success too. Probably he was thinking of Woakes, who had Nathan Lyon dropped by Tredwell at slip in the last significant action of the evening session.
