England won't come close to us in Ashes – Smith

Huge hunger in Australia squad for Ashes – Watson

Steven Smith and Shane Watson are convinced Australia are on course to retain the Ashes in England later in the summer. Speaking exclusively to ESPNcricinfo, Smith said he doesn’t think England will “come close” to challenging the Australian team on current form, while Watson said there is “huge hunger” within the squad to end the sequence of three consecutive Ashes series defeats in England of 2005, 2009 & 2013.”We’ve got a very strong squad that’s going over to England,” Watson said. “We’ve got good depth and the best part is everyone is in nearly career-best form right now which is most important as well. There is a huge hunger within the group because we know that we haven’t won in England for the last three series. I’ve been involved in two of those. There’s a big burning desire to be involved in an Ashes winning campaign in England as well. We’re as well prepared as we can be within our group. I’m incredibly excited about what’s on the horizon with the Ashes and everyone else is as well.””I can’t wait to get over there and play another Ashes against England in their conditions after beating them so convincingly in Australia,” Smith said. “It’s going to be nice to go in their backyard. If we continue to play the way we have been playing over the last 12-18 months, I don’t think that they’ll come close to us to be honest.”Smith is widely expected to be formally named Australia’s one-day captain after Michael Clarke decided to retire after the World Cup. Smith is also tipped to take over the reigns of the Test team when Clarke decides to hang his boots. While Watson endorsed the 25-year old for the job whole-heartedly, quipping Cricket Australia would be “crazy” to not give him the job, Smith was understandably not as forthcoming.”It’s not my job to decide who is going to be the captain in the future,” Smith said. “I’ve had some good experiences and really enjoyed captaining the team in Michael’s absence in the summer against India. It was a great learning experience for me to have senior players like Shane and Brad Haddin around the group to bounce ideas off. Shane was very supportive throughout the home series and to have him and Hadds next to me while I was standing at second slip and to have that wealth of experience beside me and to bounce ideas off them was really beneficial for me at the start and I really enjoyed the experience of captaining Australia.”Watson and Smith are currently in India as part of the Rajasthan Royals squad in the ongoing IPL. The 2008 champions made a strong start to their campaign, winning their first five matches although they lost their last two. Smith believes that Rajasthan are “yet to play their best cricket” despite having started the tournament well and expects the team to reach peak capacity come the home stretch of the tournament.Watson, who was Man of the Series in the first edition of the IPL in 2008 and played a key role in Royals’ unexpected run to the title, credits the “culture” built at the franchise over the years for them being able to punch above their weight and challenge teams that can boast of more marquee players. He thinks the current squad has the depth to be strong contenders this season again.”Some of the other teams spend all their salary caps but in the end it’s part of the evolution of our group to give an opportunity to people, like myself in the first year, to impress and get those guys in and around our group because we know they really want to get the best out of themselves and also for the team,” Watson said. “We had a good year a couple of years ago [2013] when we made the Champions League and this year it feels very special as well with the group we’ve got around and the depth in our squad has been as good as it ever has been.”

Não me esqueço.

McCullum 'proud' as NZ stay true to their style

Brendon McCullum was delighted with the way his team had stayed true to their attacking instincts in levelling the Investec series against England with only their fifth Test victory in the country. He said that a drawn series was a “fair result” but admitted it would have been nice for it not to be ending after two absorbing contests.New Zealand wrapped up a 199-run victory shortly before the final hour was due to begin when Jos Buttler padded up to Mark Craig. The spinners played a key part in the victory push as Craig and Kane Williamson shared six wickets between them on a pitch offering some assistance. The visitors were ahead in the first Test for three days at Lord’s before England produced a notable turnaround, but they did not let their heads drop and came out all guns blazing on the opening day at Headingley as they cantered along at more than four-and-a-half an over, something they repeated in their second innings”I’m really proud of this win, sometimes it’s not easy when you lose the first Test match when you think you’ve played all right, to have that resolve to bounce back and stay true to your game,” McCullum said. “That’s what we did and we were able to beat what we think is a very, very good England team in their own conditions.”New Zealand were 2 for 2 after being put into bat on the first day and then England were 215 for 1 before Adam Lyth’s run out changed the complexion of the match. Although the home side clawed themselves level on first innings, McCullum was always confident when they had been kept within sight.”We were behind in the game but the beauty of batting first is that you have the ability to play from in front. We had to try to hang in and we knew if we were able to get ourselves back to parity then we would be bowling last would be quite handy.”England are a very good team and to beat them in their conditions is no easy feat, credit to Alastair and his team – I thought the series was played in tremendous spirit, 1-1 is a fair result and it is just a shame we haven’t got another one or two.”McCullum played down his Midas touch as captain after Williamson made regular inroads on the final day, twice striking in first overs of spells to remove Ben Stokes and Alastair Cook, while Ian Bell was caught at leg slip straight after the fielder had been brought into that position.”There’s instinct and then there’s pure gambling,” he said. “Kane has a bit of knack, if he’s had a quiet Test we can be pretty sure he’ll get involved somehow. He played such a crucial role, 3 for 15 on the last day of a Test as a part-time spinner, he allowed the other guys to settle into their work.”

Tail wags Australia's Test team

It was the irascible Jarrod Kimber who spoke for much of the cricket world in his brief verdict on the brutal finish of the Dominica Test match. “Australia’s tail,” he tweeted, “is the second best Test team around after South Africa.”

It was the irascible Jarrod Kimber who spoke for much of the cricket world in his brief verdict on the brutal finish of the Dominica Test match. “Australia’s tail,” he tweeted, “is the second best Test team around after South Africa.”Such ribbing of Australia’s batsmen has been going on inside the dressing room as well, and with good reason: the regularity of the lower order bailing out the top is one of the few longest running themes of the team, beginning even before the retirements of Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Justin Langer and Damien Martyn signalled the end of the golden age in 2007.At Windsor Park, Australia’s final four wickets piled up enough runs to leave West Indies in a parlous position, and the last one alone added 97 through an inspired union between Adam Voges and Josh Hazlewood. Mitchell Johnson and Nathan Lyon also played their part, proving themselves more adept than their full-time batting colleagues at adapting to the prevailing conditions.Johnson, who was once spoken of as a potential allrounder but is now content to be the most destructive No. 8 batsman in the game, offered a warm grin when asked to expand on the performances of the Australian tail during his time in the team. It cannot be forgotten that Johnson’s stand with Brad Haddin on day one of the 2013-14 Ashes gave him enough of a platform to terrorise England with the ball.”There is a little bit of ribbing going on, not too much,” Johnson said. “We take pride in what we do down the bottom order there. Myself personally I like to score runs when I can and I know Mitchy Starc likes to and Josh did an outstanding job. To have that big partnership down the bottom was outstanding. We do pride ourselves on that and we’ve done that very well over the last few years where other teams haven’t quite being able to do it.”There has been a little bit of ribbing going on but we’ve got a big Test match coming up and I’m sure they [the batsmen] will be out there to put on some big partnerships and some hundreds so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.”There is less reason to worry when the reasons for Australian lower-order success are examined. Chief among them is the fact that many of Australia’s bowlers possess techniques and methods far more correct than they used to be, and at times more aesthetically pleasing than those of the batsmen above.Johnson, Hazlewood and particularly the injured James Pattinson play with the clean lines and simplicity of top six players, while Nathan Lyon gets his eyes over the ball with fierce commitment and both Mitchell Starc and Ryan Harris offer the sorts of robust, thumping techniques that can have fielders scurrying if they can survive their first few balls.By contrast, the relative struggles of Fawad Ahmed to be a batting concern of any merit have arguably played against his inclusion – if you want to bowl for Australia these days, you’d better be able to bat at least a little. Hazlewood’s growing confidence as an international cricketer is reflected in his batting as well as his bowling, while Starc can expect to offer more with the bat than he did in Dominica.”Josh is still really new to the game and still very fresh but he’s been able to go out there and play his game and do what he has done for New South Wales, and I guess do what he did as a junior,” Johnson said. “He’s got that height, he’s got a great pace about him, he can step it up when he needs to I think with his pace. But I think think what he does for our team he brings a great balance.”And Mitch Starc, I think there’s been a lot of talk about how good his one-day performances and Twenty20 performances have been, to be able to come into this Test match on a slow wicket a turning wicket and to be able to bowl the way he did, cleaned up the tail for us which was really exciting for me. But those two guys have been outstanding.”We’ve got a lot of fast bowlers in the Australian team that have been performing for a while and it is really hard being a fast bowler in Australia right now because we do have the stocks there, and you know, it is really exciting for Australian cricket.”And if the success of the bowlers must continue to be built upon runs of their own making, then at least they will be used to the pressure.

'USA stakeholders are fragmented' – Richardson

An ICC plan is being organised to appoint a local advisory board in America to help the USA Cricket Association rectify numerous issues that resulted in suspension on Friday

Peter Della Penna26-Jun-20152:51

‘USACA suspended with immediate effect’ – Richardson

ICC chief executive David Richardson says a plan is being organised to appoint a local advisory board in America to help the USA Cricket Association rectify numerous issues that resulted in having its Associate membership suspended on Friday at the ICC annual conference. Richardson stated that USACA’s “conditions relating to governance, finance and its cricket activities” are of great concern and “must be addressed and remedied in full” before consideration will be given to lifting USACA’s suspension.”We will visit the USA,” Richardson told assembled media at a press conference on Friday in Barbados where USACA’s suspension was announced. “We will set to support the development of a meaningful strategy for USA cricket going forward including through the appointment of a locally based advisory group which we think will be well placed to put USA on track, put a strategy in place to be able to move forward.”Richardson stated that the “unification of stakeholders” was especially important for cricket to move forward in the USA, echoing statements made by ICC head of global development Tim Anderson in a recent interview with ESPNcricinfo. At the moment, Richardson says the rivalry between USACA and the American Cricket Federation has created a divide in the country which is further compounded by the ambivalence of players and leagues not interested in pledging allegiance to either group, choosing to organise activities on their own instead.”Cricket is played in upwards of 80 or 90 leagues in the USA but they are fragmented,” Richardson said. “Some of them are under the USA Cricket Association. Some are under another rival body called the American Cricket Federation. Some are on their own and there is no coordinated effort.”It’s going to be a challenging task but hopefully these efforts will be aimed at unifying everybody and then moving forward with a proper strategy and hopefully we’ll see USA cricket qualifying for major global events. If the UAE and countries like that can get to the events, there’s no reason with the number of cricketers in the US that USA cricket can’t do the same.”Richardson played down suggestions USACA’s problems are bad enough that it would result in expulsion from the ICC. A decision on expelling USACA as an ICC member would not be taken until the 2016 ICC annual conference at the earliest. However, Richardson was optimistic that things can improve with the assistance of the local advisory board – as well as oversight from himself and representatives from the BCCI, ECB, WICB and Cricket Australia – well before next June.”Hopefully we’ll make some significant progress by the October meetings,” Richardson said. “We aim to report back to the board by then. We would have visited the USA and put the advisory group in place and they will be getting on with putting together a strategy and plan that we will hopefully be able to report back by October.”
