Liverpool: Gerrard eyeing Anfield maestro

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is attracting serious interest from Anfield icon and Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard, according to Darren Lewis of The Daily Mirror.

The lowdown

Gomez currently finds himself fourth in Jurgen Klopp’s centre-back pecking order. He’s actually played the majority of his football this season a right-back, providing cover for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Englishman has only started three Premier League matches all season, as well as two Champions League games.

His £75,000-per-week contract is due to expire in just over two years’ time, but the Liverpool Echo’s Theo Squires has recently reported from club sources that Julian Ward has been tasked with extending his deal.

The former Charlton Athletic man has made 141 appearances for the club, failing to score in that time but registering five assists and racking up multiple trophies.

The latest

Lewis, an assistant editor at The Mirror, says that Gerrard wants a new centre-half to help prepare his squad for a European push.

He believes that Villa’s ‘poor defensive record’ has held them back during his first season at the helm and he’s identified Gomez as the man to sort that out, so could thwart the plans of Liverpool and Ward to extend the player’s deal.

The verdict

Gomez knows that he’s good enough to be playing regularly for most sides in the Premier League.

After all, this is a player who started 22 matches for the side that won the title with 99 points in the 2019/20 season.

Klopp regards him as a ‘world-class’ centre-back and an ‘exceptional talent’, but hasn’t been able to find room for him for the most part this term.

With Liverpool seemingly inclined to keep hold of him rather than listen to offers, it could come down to what the player decides.

And he may view a move as his best bet of securing the opportunities he needs to earn a place in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.

Palace: Rak-Sakyi has big opportunity

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira must place his trust in Eagles youngster Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, amidst his latest injury setback.

What’s the latest

Crystal Palace will be without their French sensation Michael Olise for the remainder of the season, after he picked up a knock that saw him miss the 1-1 draw against Aston Villa.

Asked about the injury in the post-match press conference, as per Football.London, Vieira said: “Michael was injured. He had a step back and he’s not going to play again this season.”

Eberechi Eze started in place of Olise, whilst versatile Ghanian international Jeffrey Schlupp took up the right-wing position with just 12 minutes to go – scoring the all-important equaliser, having been on the pitch for just three minutes.

Opportunity Knocks

Having recently been named Crystal Palace’s U23 player of the season, Rak-Sakyi deserves a chance in the absence of Olise.

The 19-year-old has already spoken of his desire to impress Eagles boss Vieira before the end of the season, and with just two games left, he will need to stake his claim sooner, rather than later.

Last week, Vieira revealed that some of the U23s would train with the first team until the end of the season. Of course, Rak-Sakyi, who has been in and around the first team – having made the match-day squad on several occasions – is one of these players, having hit 15 goals and a further five assists in just 24 appearances in Premier League 2.

The 19-year-old, who has been described as a “standout” player by Dan Gibbs, has praised his manager for the number of opportunities he is willing to give to youth players.

As per Winsford Guardian, Rak-Sakyi said: “He [Vieira] is a great manager. I would say that he really trusts the youth. It just shows that if we work hard and we just put in the work in training and games then there are opportunities here.

“I have just got to work hard, keep training hard and hopefully I will get more minutes.”

With Olise out, Rak-Sakyi should be given the opportunity to make his second, and hopefully third, Premier League appearances in what are the final two league games for Palace.

Aaron Ramsey tipped for Rangers exit

Rangers currently have a number of players in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad that are set to see their contracts expire at Ibrox in the coming days.

With that in mind, it seems as though a behind-the-scenes clue has emerged regarding the future of one of those Gers players.

What’s the talk?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge had this to say about Aaron Ramsey and his future once his current loan spell at Ibrox ends.

“I don’t think he will be back. We’ve seen a player who has had niggly injuries for his whole time there. He couldn’t get a run going, so I would be surprised [if he stayed].

“He put up an Instagram post on Sunday and it read to me like it was a bit of a goodbye. He hasn’t come here and been that consistent.”

Bad news for Van Bronckhorst

Rangers signed the midfielder on loan from Italian club Juventus during the previous January transfer window.

Since then, the Welshman made only 13 appearances for the Ibrox side, starting just nine of them across all competitions.

In those appearances, the midfielder scored two goals and provided two assists along the way. However, during the penalty shootout against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final, Ramsey ended up missing the penalty that led to the German side winning the trophy.

While Bridge is right in terms of the January recruit not getting a consistent run in the team during his time at Ibrox, it would still be disappointing for the fans and bad news for van Bronckhorst to not have the opportunity to keep Ramsey in the squad for next season.

With a summer break followed by a pre-season period under his belt, this could put the former Arsenal star in good shape to become a really important figure for the Gers and play on a consistent basis should he avoid any fitness issues.

Taking into account his knack for the occasional goal or assist, this and his vast experience could make him an incredibly useful figure for Rangers on and off the pitch.

With his current contract at Juventus set to expire in the summer of 2023, it could be worth Rangers seeing if the Serie A club would be willing to loan the midfielder to them again with an option for a permanent move next summer.

Everton make offer to sign Tarkowski

Everton have held a long term interest in James Tarkowski and were previously linked to signing the defender back in January and now a new update has emerged ahead of the summer transfer window.

What’s the latest?

According to Football Insider, an Everton source has revealed that the club has tabled an offer of £120k-per-week for recently relegated Burnley defender Tarkowski.

As per the report, the Everton source claimed that the Toffees have put together a lucrative deal to cement their serious intent to sign Tarkowski, with Newcastle United and West Ham United named as clubs competing for his services.

The Toffees look to beat Leicester City, Aston Villa and Fulham to secure the signature of the player who will not renew his contract at his current club.

Mason Holgate upgrade

There is no doubt that big improvements are needed at the club ahead of next season to ensure that Everton don’t find themselves in the same situation they have experienced this season, battling relegation down to the wire.

One huge area of improvement is the defence in the squad after the side conceded 66 goals, 23 more than they have scored in total this season, and the 5-1 loss on the final day should be ringing alarm bells in Frank Lampard’s head ahead of the summer transfer window.

Despite being relegated this season with Burnley, Tarkowski has been a stand out performer and solid force for the side which clearly reflects in the amount of Premier League clubs interested in signing the defender this summer.

When you compare the 29-year-old brute who was hailed “outstanding” by Sean Dyche, to Everton’s Mason Holgate it is clear he would be a big upgrade in the defensive back-line at Goodison Park next season.

According to Squawka, Tarkowski has won more tackles, duels, interceptions, blocks and made more clearances than his position competitor in Merseyside, so if Lampard could secure the signing it would be a major coup for the Toffees next season and surely improve their defensive play.

With that being said, Everton will have to hope their attractive offer will be tempting enough to get Tarkowski to make the short move across the North West to join the club this summer.

Cedric Itten set to leave Rangers

Rangers striker Cedric Itten is on the brink of completing a £1.55m move back to Switzerland, according to the Glasgow Times.

The Lowdown: Itten’s disappointing spell at Rangers

The 25-year-old arrived at Ibrox two years ago for £2.7m as he signed a four-year deal with the Premiership club.

Having failed to make an impression in Glasgow, the Swiss marksman was sent out on loan to Bundesliga outfit Greuther Furth at the beginning of the season, before being recalled in January.

It was expected that the striker was to receive first-team action under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, but after getting just 130 minutes of Premiership football, it has been revealed that a so-called mystery bug prevented him from playing more.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-4/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Itten set to leave Rangers

According to a report in the Glasgow Times, Itten is on the brink of completing a £1.55m move to Swiss side Young Boys. After an unsuccessful two-year stint in Scotland, the 25-year-old is said to be keen to return home to his native Switzerland.

The striker is set to sign a four-year deal with the Bern club, with Young Boys sporting director Christoph Spycher refusing to deny interest in the former St Gallen man when he was quizzed about him last week.

The Verdict: Didn’t work out

Whilst Itten’s spell with Rangers clearly didn’t go as he would have hoped, Light Blues captain James Tavernier has still been full of praise for his team-mate.

After one game against Kilmarnock, the skipper claimed: “Cedric did a brilliant job for us today. He’s been on the sidelines watching, he’s been seeing, obviously, Kemar [Roofe] get the headlines, Alfredo [Morelos] get the headlines and credit to himself – he’s a great professional.”

Rangers fans might not be heartbroken at Itten’s prospective departure, and the move may be viewed as a positive decision for all parties involved, given the acceptance that his tenure with the club just didn’t work out the way that he or the Ibrox hierarchy would have initially hoped.

Celtic must seal Connor Barron transfer

Celtic have seen some prominent midfielders wave goodbye to Parkhead in recent memory, such as Scott Brown and Tom Rogic.

The club also announced that they have released young midfield talent Luca Connell after his recent loan spell with Queen’s Park.

Now that the summer transfer window is set to open, this will give Ange Postecoglou the chance to potentially replace some of these recent departures and strengthen his squad in other areas as well.

One fresh-faced midfielder with whom the Hoops have been linked recently is Aberdeen youngster Connor Barron.

A product of the Pittodrie youth system, the 19-year-old has made 15 senior appearances for the club, 13 of which came during the second half of this latest Premiership season.

This highlights just how much faith Jim Goodwin has in the youngster and how highly he is rated at the club.

In fact, Goodwin said about the teenager in March: “He’s brave on the ball and, for a small lad, he wants to get stuck in as well. Connor is a very good player with great potential. He has so much to learn and improve on which he knows and he is not getting above his station at all.”

In terms of what sort of player he is, Jacek Kulig described the £68k-rated starlet as being similar to Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante. The Twitter football scout also listed Barron’s pace, passing, tackling, positioning, work rate, energy, pressing and tenacity as the youngster’s main strengths.

Taking into account how successful Kante has been for club and country in terms of the trophies he’s lifted and individual awards he’s won, the prospect of having their own version of the Frenchman in the shape of the Aberdeen starlet is one that Celtic should not let slip.

While the Dons would presumably be keen to retain their teenage talent and give him the chance to develop his game at Pittodrie, the chance to join the reigning Scottish champions and potentially lift silverware and play in Europe with the Hoops would surely be tempting for Barron.

Wolves linked with Matt Garbett transfer

Wolves have been linked with a transfer move for Torino midfielder Matt Garbett.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from The Sun, Wolves are one of the clubs keeping tabs on the player alongside the likes of Sevilla and fellow Premier League sides Everton and Leicester City.

After starting his career in his home country of New Zealand, the London-born midfielder joined Swedish club Falkenberg in the 2020 January transfer window.

Having made 26 appearances there, the 20-year-old then joined Torino’s U19 squad in the previous summer transfer window.

Since then, the midfielder has made 30 appearances for the Italian club’s youth side, scoring three goals and delivering two goals in the process.

For New Zealand, the youngster has already made nine appearances in which he’s managed to score one goal, which highlights just how highly rated he is at such a young age.

Prior to that, he racked up ten international appearances for New Zealand’s U17 side, scoring four goals in the process.

One of those goals was described as “terrific” on Twitter by presenter Chris Chang, highlighting that he has a talent for scoring goals from midfield.

The next Moutinho

Back in 2020, after previously being linked with a move to Everton, Garbett was described as a “hotshot” by journalist Phil Cadden.

Taking that into account, it seems as though the Old Gold could land a rather exciting and talented young player if they are able to secure the starlet’s signature this summer.

Wolves midfielder Joao Moutinho is set to see his current contract at Molineux run out at the end of the month, so there’s every chance that he could be waving goodbye to the Midlands club in the coming weeks.

With that in mind, a young talent such as Garbett could be their ideal long-term replacement for the 35-year-old veteran.

Having shown an early knack for finding the back of the net throughout his short career, the Torino talent could well end up following in the footsteps of Moutinho, who has scored five goals and provided 23 assists in 176 games.

Even if the Portugal international does end up staying at the club for a bit longer, it could still be worth them signing the New Zealand starlet as give him the chance to develop and grow even further.

Liverpool: Source makes Asensio claim

Liverpool are eyeing a sensational move for Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio, according to a report from Spanish outlet AS.

The lowdown: Illustrious career

Signed for just €3.7m (£3.2m) from Real Mallorca as a fledgling 18-year-old in 2014 (ESPN), the Spaniard has already written in name into the annals of history with Los Blancos.

Having been immediately loaned out to Espanyol, the attacker returned to the Bernabeu and has since directly contributed to 73 goals in 235 outings for the club, winning the Champions League and the La Liga title on three occasions each.

Now set to enter the final 12 months of his deal in the Spanish capital (Transfermarkt), Asensio could be about to embark on a future away from his homeland, and Merseyside could be calling…

The latest: Reds in the hunt

As per AS, Liverpool are said to have already made contact with the representatives of the 29-cap Spain international, who is valued at €40m (£34m) by Real Madrid.

It’s claimed that Jurgen Klopp still ‘seeks to fill the vacancy’ left behind by Sadio Mane’s imminent departure to Bayern Munich, and Asensio could be the man for the role.

AC Milan are also mentioned as potential suitors for the man whose ‘extraordinary quality’ was praised by his manager Carlo Ancelotti when questioned about the 26-year-old’s contract.

Darwin’s a Red! Get your special edition Darwin Nunez tee here. The verdict: No brainer

Even following the arrivals of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez this year to soften the blow of Mane’s inevitable departure, signing Asensio would be a sensational piece of business from Liverpool this summer, especially at the mooted price.

Still holding a market value of £36m, the Spanish forward – who holds a stylistic likeness to such illustrious names as Riyad Mahrez, Son-Heung min and indeed Mane (FBRef) – would offer unmatched versatility to Klopp’s ranks with his ability to play anywhere across the frontline and in deeper attacking midfield roles.

Last season, the cultured ace scored 12 times and provided two assists in 42 appearances as a reminder of his mercurial talents which once saw him tipped for Ballon d’Or success. He earned an outstanding 7.07 Sofascore rating whilst hitting the target with 1.1 shots, making one key pass and completing 0.9 successful dribbles per game in the process.

Although some reports have suggested that Liverpool’s summer transfer activity could already be completed, Asensio’s price tag, return to form and quality should make this potential swoop a no-brainer for FSG and Julian Ward.

Liverpool ready to move for Raphinha

Liverpool are reportedly ready to make their move for Leeds United winger Raphinha, according to a report from Spanish outlet Sport.

The lowdown: Premier League revelation

Since joining the Whites in 2020 from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes for £17m (BBC), the Brazil international has been nothing short of sensational for the Yorkshire club.

The 25-year-old has proven to be very effective in the final third, having amassed 17 goals and 11 assists in 66 outings in England, earning a first call-up for his national team as a result.

After narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League on the final day of the 2021/22 season, it has appeared as though a move could be in the offing for some time, with Barcelona having been the frontrunners. However, that could now be set to change…

The latest: Liverpool in the hunt for Raphinha

As per Sport, Liverpool remain at the forefront of those waiting to sign Raphinha this summer, as Jurgen Klopp still ‘wants’ to bring the 25-year-old to the AXA Training Centre.

It’s claimed that, were it not for the nine-cap forward’s agent Deco – a Barcelona icon in his playing days – the skilful Brazilian ‘would have already signed’ for either the Reds or Chelsea.

The report added that it’s ‘mainly Liverpool’ with a chance of making the deal happen should the Catalan giants fail to reach a €65m (£58m) agreement for the dazzling attacker, who has been called a ‘magician’ by his club colleague Daniel James.

Darwin’s a Red! Get your special edition Darwin Nunez tee here. The verdict: Go get him

With Mohamed Salah’s Anfield future appearing more perilous than ever, FSG should be making immediate provisions to replace the Egyptian superstar and capitalise on the procrastination from Spain in the process.

Predominantly operating as a left-footed right-winger in a similar vein to the 30-year-old, Raphinha has certainly shown the early signs of being able to emulate the levels reached by the Liverpool superstar as he approaches the peak of his own powers.

Last season, the Brazilian scored 11 times and registered three assists in 35 Premier League outings for a struggling Leeds side, winning 5.2 duels, completing 1.8 successful dribbles and making 1.9 key passes per game whilst earning a 6.97 Sofascore rating.

Somewhat surprisingly, those statistics from Raphinha are a close match for Salah, indeed even better on certain fronts. The Egypt supremo only won 2.9 duels, completed 1.5 successful dribbles and made 1.8 key passes per top-flight match in 2021/22, statistics which would further endear Klopp to the potential capture of the Elland Road star.

As things stand, the signs all point towards the 30-year-old running down his deal on Merseyside. As such, signing Raphinha now would be a shrewd move in order to ensure that a natural succession plan is in place.

Man Utd: Romano provides Martial update

Reputable journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided an update regarding the future of out of favour Manchester United forward Anthony Martial.

The lowdown: Flattered to deceive

Signed for £36million from AS Monaco in 2015 (BBC), Martial arrived at Old Trafford with a burgeoning reputation as being one of the brightest talents in European football.

Despite lighting up a 3-1 victory with a superb solo goal on debut against arch-rivals Liverpool, the move has ultimately proven to be a disappointing one as the Frenchman struggled for consistent form in Manchester aside from a 17-goal 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news-3/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Having spent the second half of last season on loan at Sevilla, the future of the 26-year-old remains in the balance and one informed onlooker has now suggested United would still be willing to sanction another move this summer.

The latest: ‘Open to discuss’

Speaking to Give Me Sport, transfer insider Romano has claimed that the Old Trafford hierarchy remains ‘open’ to the 30-cap France international leaving during the transfer window.

He said: “For Martial, at the moment, the situation is still the same.

“He’s waiting to speak with ten Hag, but Manchester United are open to discuss in case they will receive some proposals in the coming days.”

The verdict: Time to go

Ultimately, despite an occasional talismanic display and his undoubted quality, Martial has simply failed to produce the regularity of performance that is required if the Red Devils are going to compete once again under Erik ten Hag.

Last season, the versatile attacker – who was once dubbed a ‘Ferrari’ by former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves  –  scored just twice and registered one assist in 23 outings across all competitions for United and Sevilla, the kind of form that only acts to highlight a need for a fresh start for both club and player.

Valued at £14.4million and under contract until 2024 (Transfermarkt), the club will almost certainly suffer a loss on Martial but with Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Elanga as well as the emergence of academy winger Alejandro Garnacho all making the attacker surplus to requirements, a move away seems the best option for all parties.
