No personal vehicles for India players as CAB enforces BCCI's new policy

The ten-point policy document was sent out to associations that will be hosting India-England games, PTI reported; the first T20I is in Kolkata, where India began training on Sunday

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Jan-2025The BCCI’s ten-point policy document for the senior men’s team has been sent to the various state associations that will be hosting India-England games in the coming weeks, according to a PTI report. India host England for five T20Is, followed by three ODIs, starting with the first T20I at Eden Gardens on January 22.Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Snehasish Ganguly confirmed that his association made arrangements for the Indian team in accordance with the policy document on Sunday, the first day of training at Eden Gardens.”In keeping with the BCCI’s 10-point guidelines for players, the Cricket Association of Bengal has not arranged any separate means of conveyance [for individual players],” Ganguly was quoted as saying by PTI. “Only a team bus has been arranged for the Indian team. There won’t be any personal vehicles for the cricketers.Related

“We have to follow the guidelines, which clearly state that all players are expected to travel with the team to and from matches and practice sessions.”The entire squad travelling to and from training and matches together on the team bus was one of the points put forward by the BCCI this past week, after a review meeting to go over India’s recent poor run in Test cricket. Among those present at the meeting were head coach Gautam Gambhir, the Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. The policy document said that going forward, a player will need a “pre-approved” nod from the head coach or head selector to travel separately from the rest of the squad to training or games, and all players would have to wait for the entire training session or game to be over before they left the ground. “This rule ensures commitment and fosters a strong work ethic within the team,” the document said.Another point was around participation in domestic cricket being mandatory for players. Rohit had spoken about this at a press conference in Mumbai on Saturday, when the team for the Champions Trophy was being announced. At the same press conference, Agarkar had said the new policies were not a “diktat” or “punishment”, but “you have some rules in place and when you’re playing for the national team you just follow those rules”.

Weakened Australia look for Champions Trophy answers

Four players originally selected are absent meaning there is uncertainty for the ODI World Cup champions as they prepare to head to Pakistan

Andrew McGlashan11-Feb-2025

Big Picture: Australia hit by injury, retirement; SL not at the party

Australia’s four-day victory in Galle gave them an extra 24 hours before flicking into one-day mode as they enter a brief period of preparation for the Champions Trophy 2025. Originally there was just going to be a single ODI in Colombo but a second was squeezed in which will basically be the team’s warm-ups before heading to Pakistan.Injuries to Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh along with the surprise retirement of Marcus Stoinis means there is a bit of a patched-up feel to the Australia squad although a familiar core of the 2023 World Cup-winning team remains with the likes of Travis Head, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa around.Related

Six players have been added to the originally selected group: Jake-Fraser McGurk, Cooper Connolly, Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Spencer Johnson and Tanveer Sangha. It is likely they will all get at least one of the two matches in Sri Lanka as some of those who played both Tests are given a short break. Smith appears set to take the captaincy. It appears likely that Head and Matt Short will form the first-choice opening partnership although Fraser-McGurk could make a late entry. He and Short struggled in the home series against Pakistan in November. Another point of interest is whether Alex Carey finds himself a place in the middle order.Sri Lanka missed out on the Champions Trophy due to their poor ODI World Cup so these matches have little immediate context although they can have half an eye on the road to 2027. They have, however, played the most matches in the format since the previous World Cup (21), notching 13 wins in that time including five series victories. Ironically, they are probably as attuned to the one-day format as anyone.

In the spotlight: Dunith Wellalage and Matt Short

It was during Australia’s previous visit to Sri Lanka in 2022 that Dunith Wellalage burst onto the international scene with nine wickets in five matches. He only played a bit-part role in the 2023 World Cup but either side of that tournament claimed five-wicket hauls against India in the Asia Cup and last year’s ODI series. He has also shown his prowess with the bat with a top score of 67 not out in a tied match against India. Clearly a key part of Sri Lanka’s future.Matt Short couldn’t quite take his opportunity at the top of the order against Pakistan but the absence of Mitchell Marsh means he’s likely to find a spot in the first choice XI. His 109 off 54 balls for Adelaide Strikers against Brisbane Heat in the BBL was a reminder of what he can bring against the white ball. His offspin is another handy string to his bow and he’s an excellent fielder.Mitchell Starc could be rested for the ODIs•Getty Images

Team news: Starc likely to rest

Given the odd nature of this series and the short turnaround, it’s tricky to know what each side will do. It was announced on Wednesday that Mitchell Starc had withdrawn from the Champions Trophy and was also unavailable for these two ODIs.Australia squad: Travis Head, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Glenn Maxwell, Cooper Connolly, Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Spencer Johnson, Tanveer SanghaSri Lanka squad: Charith Asalanka, Nishan Madushka, Nuwanidu Fernando, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Janith Liyanage, Kamindu Mendis, Asitha Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Eshan Malinga, Mohamed Shiraz, Maheesh Theekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay, Dunith Wellalage

Pitch and conditions

The R Premadasa Stadium has not staged a day ODI since 2014 so statistics are not that relevant although in recent times, matches at the venue have been on the lower-scoring side. The forecast is for warm and sunny days.

Stats and trivia

  • Glenn Maxwell needs 50 runs for 4000 in ODIs and Alex Carey needs 22 for 2000
  • Wanindu Hasaranga needs five wickets for 100 in ODIs
  • Overall, Sri Lanka have a 35-64 win/loss record against Australia

James Coles makes 150 as Sussex dispense with any jeopardy

Warwickshire battle through six wickets for Rocchiccioli but stalemate beckons on final day

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay01-Jul-2025 Warwickshire 415 (Yates 93, Hain 87, Barnard 66, Crocombe 3-82) and 88 for 1 trail Sussex 533 (Hughes 151, Coles 150, Rocchiccioli 6-173) by 30 runsJames Coles made 150 and there were six wickets for Warwickshire offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli but despite their efforts Sussex’s Rothesay County Championship match against Warwickshire is heading for a draw.Coles’ second successive Championship hundred helped Sussex take a first-innings lead of 118 after their first innings ended on 433, 20 minutes after tea on day three. It left Warwickshire with 24 overs to get through to stumps and they closed on 88 for one, losing Rob Yates for 11 when he inside-edged a fine ball from Ollie Robinson onto his middle stump.Off-spinner Jack Carson nearly broke through late on but Daniel Ibrahim put down a tough chance at short leg to reprieve skipper Alex Davies, who has so far added 66 with Tom Latham as Warwickshire closed 30 runs in arrears. But the effects of a slow pitch and the Kookaburra ball are likely to ensure a stalemate, especially with some rain in the forecast on the final day.Coles, 21, made an unbeaten 148 against Durham last week and followed it up with his sixth first-class hundred, sharing stands of 73 with Dan Ibrahim (36), 59 with John Simpson (30) and 50 with Fynn Hudson-Prentice (45) before he was sixth out, caught behind via an inside edge off Ethan Bamber. He had to be patient for long periods. Even without Chris Rushworth, who injured his hamstring after sending down just three overs on the second day, Warwickshire bowled diligently and fielded well. Coles, unbeaten on 50 overnight, brought up his hundred with an edge to the third boundary just before lunch, but it was one of the few unconvincing shots he played in nearly six-and-a-half hours at the crease when he faced 294 balls, an outstanding effort on another day of sweltering heat at Hove. He hit 19 fours and pulled a six into the pavilion off Oliver Hannon-Dalby.Warwickshire’s hard work in the field was epitomised by Rocchiccioli, the Western Australian who arrived in England for his first taste of county cricket last month having taken 84 Sheffield Shield wickets since the 2023-4 season. Here he followed up his six wickets on debut against Somerset at Edgbaston last week with six more. Three came on the second day and he had to plug away from the sea end until his 18th over today for further reward when Carson (28) was smartly taken at leg slip.Rocchiccioli then polished off the innings by removing Gurinder Sandhu and Henry Crocombe with successive deliveries. The 328 balls he sent down was the most in an innings by a Warwickshire bowler since Ashley Giles bowled 68.3 overs against Yorkshire at Headingley in 1996. He just about had the strength to doff his cap to acknowledge the appreciative applause of the crowd after he’d sent down his 50th over.Bamber was the pick of Warwickshire’s seam attack, picking up Ibrahim who played around a straight one as well as Coles and there was a wicket apiece for Yates and Ed Barnard.

India 'leaning towards' playing Bumrah at Old Trafford

India’s spearhead can only play one of the two remaining Tests; with England leading 2-1, that Test may be in Manchester

Nagraj Gollapudi17-Jul-20251:41

Manjrekar: Bumrah did the hard work, played the waiting game

We return to the Jasprit Bumrah question once again: will India play him in the fourth Test against England in Manchester or will he be rested until the final game at The Oval? A definitive answer should come by the eve of the fourth Test, which begins on July 23, but on Thursday India hinted that they are “leaning” towards Bumrah playing at Old Trafford.”No, we’ll make that call [on Bumrah] in Manchester still,” India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said after the squad’s one-off training session in Beckenham before the visitors head to Manchester on Saturday. “We know we have got him for one of the last two Tests. It’s pretty obvious that the series on the line now in Manchester so there will be a leaning towards playing him.”But again, we have got to look at all the factors: how many days of cricket are we going to get up there, what do we feel is our best chance of winning that game, and then how that fits in together with The Oval. And looking at the last two games holistically as part of the series.”Related

Bumrah arrived in England for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with a pre-determined plan, worked out in coordination with the BCCI medical staff, of playing only three out of the five Tests to safeguard his back, having undergone surgery on it in March 2023. He sat out of the second Test at Edgbaston after featuring in the series opener at Headingley where he picked up a five-for in the first innings and went wicketless in the second as England took a 1-0 lead. Bumrah not playing in Birmingham despite there being an eight-day break between the first two Tests attracted severe criticism, with former India coach Ravi Shastri telling that the decision should be taken out of the player’s hands with the team management taking the final call. Despite Bumrah’s absence, India bounced back at Edgbaston to draw level at 1-1.At Lord’s, where England won a closely-contested Test in the final session, Bumrah took seven wickets including another five-for in the first innings. With another eight-day break between the third and fourth Tests, the focus will be on Bumrah again. The challenge for India’s team management is that they now need to focus on managing not just Bumrah’s workload but also that of their second strike bowler Mohammed Siraj, the leading wicket-taker in this series with 13 at 32.00. Siraj has also bowled 109 overs, the fourth-biggest workload of any bowler in the series behind those of Shoaib Bashir, Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse. On Tuesday, all three fast bowlers who played for India at Lord’s – Bumrah, Siraj and Akash Deep – did not bowl while doing their basic fitness routines. Siraj batted, however, and seemed to have recovered from the agony of the Lord’s defeat, which was sealed when he defended Bashir off the middle of his bat only for the ball to roll back onto his stumps.Jasprit Bumrah has taken 12 wickets so far in the series at an average of 21.00•PTI

Rishabh Pant did not bat on Thursday, nor did he keep wickets, as he focused on light training. Pant is yet to recover completely from the injury he suffered to his left index finger while diving to stop a ball down the leg side during England’s first innings at Lord’s. Though he batted in both innings, Pant did not keep wickets after suffering the injury, with Dhruv Jurel taking his place on the field. There was no taping on Pant’s index finger on Thursday, but while his injury is healing, any impact on the finger remains painful. Ten Doeschate said India were optimistic Pant would play in Manchester, with the only question being whether or not he would keep wickets.”He [Pant] will bat in Manchester before the Test,” ten Doeschate said. “Look, I don’t think you’re going to keep Rishabh out of the Test no matter what. He batted with quite a lot of pain in the third Test and it’s only going to get easier and easier on his finger. And keeping’s obviously the last part of the process to make sure that he can keep. We don’t want to go through that again where we have to replace the keeper halfway through innings.”Does that mean India are potentially looking at having Jurel keep wickets with Pant playing exclusively as a batter? Ten Doeschate did not rule out that scenario. “Jurel’s in the equation, but I mean obviously if Rishabh’s fit, he plays the next Test and does both.”Meanwhile, left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh suffered a cut on one of his fingers on the bowling hand while intercepting the ball in his follow-through during training. Arshdeep walked out immediately and had his hand taped. Ten Doeschate said it was not clear yet whether Arshdeep would need stitches and how it would impact India’s planning including whether Arshdeep will be in contention to play in Manchester. “We’ll take a call on the combination we play, particularly given the Arshdeep situation as well. We’ll make that call closer to Manchester.”With the regular fast bowlers resting and Arshdeep walking off, India bowling coach Morne Morkel stepped in to fill in the breach. Delivering from in front of the popping crease, the former South Africa fast bowler tested all the batters not just with the steep bounce he was famous for but also seam movement in both directions, forcing edges or prompting polite enquires for lbw.India will travel to Manchester on July 19 and resume training on Sunday.

Grace Harris 89* trumps Meg Lanning 85 as Spirit start defence with win

Champions post second-highest score in women’s Hundred thanks to Harris and Griffith knocks

ECB Reporters Network05-Aug-2025Grace Harris powered London Spirit to victory on the opening day of the Hundred, smashing 89 from just 42 balls to give the defending champions the perfect start in front of 15,640 fans at Lord’s.Harris, preferred by Spirit to Meg Lanning in the draft this winter, won the battle of the two world-class Australian batters, but Lanning could scarcely have done more in reply – making 85 off 51 balls to take Oval Invincibles close in their chase.Until Lanning was dismissed, the South London team were very much in the game but it was to be Harris and Spirit’s day. The big-hitting Aussie was ably supported by Cordelia Griffith in her side’s total of 176 for , Griffith contributing a 29-ball 50 to help Spirit to the second-highest score in the history of the women’s competition.England’s Ryana Macdonald-Gay was possibly the pick of the away team’s bowlers, but there was cheer for Tash Farrant who took her first wicket in the Hundred for 1450 days following injury. For Invincibles, no one player was able to support Lanning in the same way Griffith had backed up Harris, with cameos from Alice Capsey and Marizanne Kapp providing hope but ultimately not doing enough to overhaul such an imposing total. For Spirit, without last year’s winning captain Heather Knight, the 17-run win and the bragging rights over their London rivals signals the perfect start to their trophy defence.Meerkat Match Hero, Harris, said: “You always want a win on the board, especially in a format like this when it’s so fast. And it’s great to come up against our cross-town rivals and get the wood on them, too.”Pretty early on [it was clear it was a good wicket]. There was some good comms from the openers back to the bench and they said it wasn’t doing much; bit of swing in the air but outside of that it was playing nicely. With that role in the middle you’ve just got to capitalise on however many balls you’re going to face and we might have pinched a few singles there and it was good for us.”I’m pretty easy [as to where she bats in the order]. I’d love to open because you get to bat for the longest but I don’t really care where I end up and it’s pretty good to cash in at the end so I’ll take it.”

Leicestershire announce signings of Josh Davey and Jonny Tattersall

Seamer Davey and wicketkeeper Tattersall to join from Somerset and Yorkshire respectively

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Aug-2025Leicestershire have confirmed the double signing of Josh Davey and Jonny Tattersall on three-year deals.Davey, who will depart Somerset, and Yorkshire’s Tattersall will officially join the club on November 1 following the expiry of their current contracts. ESPNcricinfo understands allrounder Ben Green will also be joining his county team-mate Davey in swapping Taunton for Grace Road, having spent time on loan there over the last two summers. Both Davey and Green turned down extensions to remain at Somerset. The acquisitions of Davey, 35, and Tattersall, 30, will add experience to an exciting young Leicestershire squad that are on the verge of a return to Division One for the first time since the club’s relegation in 2003.Related

He has also spent this summer moonlighting as an opening batter for Somerset, and is familiar with Grace Road after a brief loan stint during the 2023 season.”I spoke to Fons [Alfonso Thomas] and Claude [Henderson], and it was clear they’ve got a collective vision for elevating the club to the next level,” Davey said in a statement via the Leicestershire website. “It’s going to be a very exciting place to be over the next three years.”I think it’s starting to shape into a competitive team. There’s a lot of talent in the squad and I hope to supplement that with the experience I’ve gained across all three formats over the last 15 years.”I met a lot of the guys during my loan here in 2023, and I loved the environment. Since then, the likes of Ben Green, Lewis Goldsworthy and Josh Thomas have all been and they have only come back saying positive things, which obviously helped steer my decision. Hopefully I can help to establish Leicestershire in the first division and look to push for some silverware. I believe we can become a real force in all three competitions over the next few years.”Jonny Tattersall captained Yorkshire to promotion last year•Getty Images

The addition of Tattersall, a keeper-batter, covers for the loss of Harry Swindells, who was forced to retire through injury last month. After debuting for Yorkshire in 2013, Tattersall went on to make 155 appearances for the club. His proudest moment came last season when he captained the county to a return to Division One, an ever-present throughout the 2024 summer, averaging 40.18 and affecting 29 dismissals. One of his two centuries last term came away at Leicestershire in September, leading to an innings victory that took Yorkshire into the promotion spots with two rounds to play. However, it was announced by Yorkshire earlier this month that he would be leaving at the end of the season.”Leicestershire is a club that has some great history behind it and has built a team that seems to be going places,” Tattersall said. “I can see a real purpose and a focus within the group with what they’re looking to achieve over the next few years, so it’s incredibly exciting to be asked to play a part in that journey.”Hopefully, I can bring experience of first division cricket and help guide a few younger lads in what that experience is like, as well as produce quality performances myself.”I’ll put in everything I’ve got to take my game to the next level and help Leicestershire win matches. Hopefully that will result in some more trophies.”Speaking on both signings, director of cricket, Claude Henderson, said: “Josh is a high-calibre operator that will offer a lot to the team in both red-ball and white-ball cricket. We know his character well and have no doubt he will be a great fit for Leicestershire. As a senior player with extensive Division One experience, his voice and all-round abilities will be a great addition to our changing room.”Jonny’s character, leadership skills and all-round cricket abilities are hugely impressive. He will bring vast experience to our changing room and further depth to our batting department, which will make him a significant asset to our squad.”

Konstas misses half-century as all-round Abbott stars in NSW's win over WA

Half-centuries from Kurtis Patterson and Moises Henriques gave New South Wales 331 before their bowlers, led by Sean Abbott, stopped Western Australia 87 runs short

AAP09-Oct-2025Western Australia teenager Albert Esterhuysen gave Sam Konstas an almighty send-off but it was New South Wales who had the last laugh in the One-Day Cup clash at the WACA Ground.Esterhuysen, playing just his second one-dayer for Western Australia, bowled Konstas for 40 and then unleashed an extended roar and stare-down in the Test opener’s direction during an emotional celebration.Konstas entered Thursday’s match desperate for a big score to mount a solid case for an Ashes call-up, but he couldn’t go on with the job after a strong start.Half-centuries to Kurtis Patterson (66 in 71 balls) and Moises Henriques (54 in 66) lifted New South Wales to a formidable 331. In reply, Western Australia were bowled out for 244 in 46.5 overs, with the returning Mitchell Marsh making just 2 as New South Wales cruised to an 87-run bonus-point victory. The result left Western Australia nursing a 1-2 record, while New South Wales (2-1) moved into second spot, behind unbeaten Tasmania (3-0).Western Australia’s innings never got going, despite boasting a stacked batting line-up that had Cameron Bancroft batting at No. 7.Sam Konstas loses his stumps•Getty Images

Marsh, who came in fresh off his unbeaten 103 in Australia’s T20I victory over New Zealand, was out in just the third over when he was caught on the boundary slashing at a wide Sean Abbott (3 for 28) delivery.Joel Curtis (15), Sam Fanning (8) and Cooper Connolly (5) all came and went as Western Australia crashed to 45 for 4 in the tenth over.Sam Whiteman received a huge life on 2 when he was caught at slip – only for Jack Edwards’ delivery to be deemed a front-foot no-ball. Whiteman went on to make 52 off 56 balls, but his departure in the 24th over at the hands of Tanveer Sangha was a bitter blow to Western Australia’s victory hopes.Bancroft (48), Ashton Agar (44) and Aaron Hardie (37) all produced handy knocks, but with the required run-rate soaring out of control, Western Australia were never truly in the hunt following the top-order collapse.Earlier, Konstas struck seven fours in a quickfire knock before chopping on 19-year-old quick Esterhuysen (2 for 58).New South Wales slumped from 203 for 3 to 225 for 6 largely thanks to Bryce Jackson’s double-strike in the 30th over that sent Patterson and Edwards packing in the space of four balls. But Western Australia couldn’t complete the job, with handy runs from Henriques, Abbott (35) and Charlie Stobo (39 in 20 balls) getting New South Wales well beyond 300.

Celtic fans react to rumours of new deal for Scott Brown

[ad_pod ]

Celtic fans are split down the middle over news that Scott Brown is close to agreeing a new two-year contract, as The Daily Record reported on Wednesday morning.

The Hoops skipper is out of contract at the end of this season with serious interest recorded from new A-League outfit Western Melbourne.

Brown has been the biggest on-field influence on Celtic’s current title winning run but some fans are unsure of his value going forward as he celebrates his 34th birthday in June.

Last season Brown swept the board for the Player of the Year awards, with Celtic appearing unable to function without his input in the centre of the park.

Alongside Olivier Ntcham he dominated the September Glasgow derby but there is no denying that Celtic’s best form of the season came when their captain was on the treatment table.

When Callum McGregor and Ryan Christie were paired up in the centre of the park in the Betfred Cup semi-final against Hearts, Celtic seemed transformed as the ball was quickly fed through to players in the attacking positions.

His days as an automatic first pick may be over but if his new deal is completed Brown is certain to remain a key influence for another two seasons.

Here’s a look at how Celtic fans have been reacting to the news on Twitter…

Arsenal would solve their left-back problems by landing Marcelo Saracchi

Unai Emery must prioritise signing a new left-back when the summer transfer window opens in a few months time.

The Spaniard has been forced to use Granit Xhaka at the back at times with Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac struggling with injuries. Emery seems unconvinced that the Bosnian international has the quality to be the starting left-back at the Emirates and will target a new left-sided defender when the window reopens according to reports in the Sun. He will be handed just £45m to strengthen his ranks but the sale of fringe players will add to his budget.

One man the Gunners could target is RB Leipzig prospect – Marcelo Saracchi.

Valued at just £12.6m by Transfermarkt, the Uruguayan is a new arrival at the club, joining in the summer from River Plate for just £10m. The defender has been hugely impressive during his short spell at the club, becoming a mainstay in the back four. Saracchi has performed well enough in the Bundesliga to make Arsenal scouts sit up and take notice.

The 20-year-old is an excellent defender who would add some much-needed stability to Emery’s back line. As well as his defensive prowess, Saracchi loves to bomb forward and contribute to the attack. With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang proving to be a massive success in the Premier League, his talents would be elevated by adding the Uruguay international to the left flank.

Still improving and developing with every game, the youngster would flourish under a world-class coach like Emery. After adapting to life in England, he would prove to be an excellent addition to the squad.
