West Ham insider makes Raphinha claim

West Ham United insider Claret & Hugh have shared a promising transfer update out of Rush Green involving Leeds United and Premier League star Raphinha.

The Lowdown: Hammers make move…

Hammers boss David Moyes, according to reports, was heavily interested in signing the Brazilian playmaker over winter.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

West Ham apparently made a move for Raphinha in January but to no avail with the South American coming as yet another marquee target GSB couldn’t bring in for the club.

Their bad luck in the last transfer window has even lead to doubts surrounding head of recruitment Rob Newman, according to Claret & Hugh again, with the Irons chief now facing a pivotal summer window.

As Newman aims to take his next set of opportunities to land key targets, C&H have shared an update on Raphinha and West Ham’s interest.

The Latest: Newman could launch ‘cut-price’ move…

According to their information, West Ham, and by extension their transfer chief Newman, are keeping a ‘close eye’ on Leeds’ situation in case they’re relegated.

The club insider goes on to say that the Whites’ drop down to the Championship could allow West Ham to ‘launch cut-price moves’ for Raphinha and another target in Kalvin Phillips.

C&H add that ‘deals will surely be there to be done’ if Jesse Marsch’s side go down.

The Verdict: Promising update…

Signing a player of Raphinha’s calibre for a bargain fee would be pretty special, especially given his serious links to La Liga giants and footballing heavyweights Barcelona.

The 25-year-old has been a revelation at Elland Road and one of their most pivotal figures, with ex-top flight goalkeeper and pundit Paddy Kenny claiming he has been ‘unbelievable’.

Raphinha’s sensational numbers back his obvious quality with the Whites superstar averaging more shots at goal, key passes and successful take-ons per 90 than anyone in Marsch’s squad this season (WhoScored).

If Leeds do indeed drop a division, we believe West Ham shouldn’t hesitate in making a bargain move for the attacker.

Man City linked with Hugo Ekitike

Manchester City have been able to reach the top of the Premier League table and the semi-finals of the Champions League with only one predominant striker in their ranks in the shape of Gabriel Jesus.

Even with the Brazilian appearing in 36 games for the Manchester club across all competitions this season, the 25-year-old has only played in the centre-forward position 17 times.

In recent days, the attacker has been linked with a transfer away from the club, with fellow Premier League Arsenal side reportedly interested in him.

Looking ahead to the upcoming summer transfer window, it seems as though the Manchester club may already have their eyes on a potential replacement for the Brazilian.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from 90min, City are one of the clubs interested in signing Stade Reims striker Hugo Ekitike this summer.

With 25 senior club appearances to his name for the French side, the 19-year-old has scored ten goals and provided three assists.

Sign him up

Labelled as a “very special” player by Oscar Garcia and as “the next Mbappe” by reporter Graham Bailey, the youngster has definitely burst onto the scene in European football this season.

To highlight how much of an attacking talent he is, no other Reims player has managed to rack up as many shots on target (15) as the teenager has, in addition to having the third-highest number of completed dribbles (26) to his name in the squad.

Having won the joint-highest number of man of the match awards in the Reims squad according to WhoScored, the youngster is also listed as their fifth-highest rated player based on his overall performances.

Taking all of this into account, it’s safe to say that Ekitike is a very exciting attacking prospect and it’s no surprise that a team like City have their eyes on him.

The report also claims that fellow Premier League clubs Chelsea, Arsenal, Wolves, Newcastle United and West Ham United are interested in the Frenchman, who has a reported price tag of £30m.

This means that it could be a challenge for the Manchester club to secure the teenager’s signature in the summer.

However, should Jesus find himself waving goodbye to the club in the near future, this could pave the way for Ekitike to take his place in Guardiola’s squad.

Although, even if the Brazil international doesn’t leave the Etihad Stadium in the summer, the emergence of the Reims prodigy if he does make the move to Manchester, could spell the end of the line for Jesus.

Tottenham Hotspur: Conte dealt bad injury news before Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has been dealt some bad injury news before his side’s blockbuster Premier League clash with Liverpool at Anfield this evening.

The Lowdown: Conte eyes top four…

The Italian, aiming to guide Spurs to Champions League qualification by the end of 2021/2022, is gearing up for his toughest test yet with a trip to Merseyside tonight.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Jurgen Klopp’s title-chasers are currently competing with champions Man City in a heated head-to-head at English football’s summit with barely any separating both sides.

It will be a big ask for Conte’s Tottenham to come away with a result in the race for a top four finish, especially with the likes of Matt Doherty, Japhet Tanganga and Oliver Skipp having already been ruled out for this match and the rest of the campaign.

The Latest: Conte also without Reguilon…

Sharing a pre-Liverpool injury update, the former Chelsea boss confirms that Spurs will also be without Reguilon again alongside the aforementioned trio.

The Spaniard missed Leicester City last week through injury and could now miss the rest of the season.

Conte explained:

“He [Reguilon] is not available.

“He hasn’t had a training session with us. He is not available. I honestly don’t know – there are only two weeks before the end of the season – whether it is possible for him to come back.”

The Verdict: Bad news…

Conte’s shortage of full-backs will now continue at Liverpool and news that he may well be left with just Emerson Royal and Ryan Sessegnon as natural options comes as a disappointing development.

Reguilon, called ‘quality’ by former Leeds striker Noel Whelan, has actually been a fairly consistent and solid performer at Spurs over 2021/2022.

According to WhoScored, he’s averaged the seventh-highest match rating per 90 (6.95) out of Tottenham’s squad whilst also putting in the second-most crosses from out wide every league game – only behind Son Heung-min in that respect.

Having him is an option to turn to is arguably crucial given Sessegnon’s spotty injury record, and if the Englishman were to be sidelined again, it’s unclear how Conte would resolve a major left-wing-back problem.

As Spurs prepare for their toughest remaining test of the season, news of the Reguilon blow is an unwelcome worry.

Everton eyeing swoop for Gavin Bazunu

Kevin Thelwell is plotting an Everton transfer swoop which will surely please Frank Lampard ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the word?

According to the Irish Independent, the Toffees are eyeing up a summer move for Manchester City and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu.

The 20-year-old has been out on loan at Portsmouth this term and faces a big decision on his future.

Southampton, Bournemouth and Sheffield United have all been linked with the young stopper, so Everton would face a battle for his signature if they actively pursue him.

Lampard would love him

With recent reports indicating that Lampard is willing to entertain offers for Jordan Pickford, the money from any such sale would likely go back into investing in the squad. This would obviously mean that the manager would then be on the lookout for a new number one, and Bazunu is thought to be a target ahead of next season.

Portsmouth manager Danny Cowley has heaped praise on the 6 foot 2 ‘keeper following an excellent season at the club, dubbing him “exceptional” as the Irishman kept 16 clean sheets in 44 matches, missing only two games as Pompey finished tenth in League One.

Bazunu made more passes (811) than any other goalkeeper in the division during his spell on the south, coast and his remarkable talent holds no bounds as he aims for regular game-time at a higher level.

His contract at Manchester City expires in 2024, and with Ederson looking like he will be at the Etihad Stadium for the long haul as he is contracted until 2026, Everton could land Bazunu for a decent fee.

The 20-year-old already has 10 caps to his name for the Republic of Ireland and this international experience will stand him in good stead as he aims to make a living in the upper echelons of the game.

Lampard could do worse than signing the young Irish ‘keeper for next season, regardless of whether or not Pickford is at Goodison Park by then.

Everton transfer news on Richarlison

Everton star Richarlison is looking to line up a move to a European ‘giant’ this summer, according to Goal Brazil journalist Thiago Fernandes.

The lowdown

Everton are battling to remain in the Premier League, and Richarlison is at the heart of those efforts.

The Blues are just two points above the bottom three with two games – against Crystal Palace and Arsenal – remaining.

Richarlison has bagged five goals in the last eight games, with his strikes against Leicester City and Chelsea earning the Toffees four potentially crucial points.

But it seems the £45million-rated man, who has just over two years left on his contract, may look to leave even if they’re successful in their survival bid.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-5/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

Fernandes took to Twitter to report that Richarlison is assessing potential exit routes.

The player’s camp would like to arrange a transfer to one of the continental elite, he says.

“Richarlison considers leaving Everton at the end of the season and seeks a giant in Europe,” he wrote.

“Striker should not stay at the English club in 2022/2023. His staff wants to put him in a team considered “top” on the continent.”

The verdict

Football Insider reported in April that ‘crunch talks’ had been held behind the scenes over Richarlison’s future, and it seems that he may have mind his made up.

Everton will be safe if they can beat Crystal Palace on Thursday, but it’s possible that this season has raised serious doubts in the player’s mind.

He may have been hopeful of a European push after a 10th-place finish last season, but instead the Blues have gone rather alarmingly backwards.

The 25-year-old, who has 34 caps for world-number-one Brazil, might now have come to the conclusion that Everton can’t match his ambition.

Manchester United hold Jurrien Timber transfer talks

Manchester United have held talks to sign Ajax defender Jurrien Timber, according to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg.

The Lowdown: Ten Hag meeting

Erik ten Hag has already made a head start when it comes to summer transfer business at Old Trafford, holding a meeting in Amsterdam last week.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news-2/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He has now terminated his Ajax contract six weeks early in order to get going in England, with Timber seemingly a player of interest. The 20-year-old appears to be at the top of his game, with a career-high £27m Transfermarkt valuation, and he was a regular in Ten Hag’s Eredivisie-winning team.

Timber has made 74 senior appearances for Ajax and is entering the final two years of his contract, and it looks as if United are making their move for his services.

The Latest: Plettenberg’s update on Timber

Sky Sports reporter Plettenberg provided an ‘update’ regarding Timber, who is also of interest to Bayern Munich, on Monday afternoon.

He claimed (via Twitter) that the 20-year-old could join Ten Hag at Old Trafford after ‘talks’ with his ‘management’ took place. United’s interest is reported as ‘serious’, although Bayern have made an enquiry of their own for the centre-back.

The Verdict: Needed?

United have had their struggles at the back this season, with just seven other Premier League teams conceding more goals than the Red Devils’ tally of 56. They shipped four last time out against Brighton, so a defensive rebuild could be of real interest to Ten Hag over the coming months.

His Ajax side conceded just 19 times in the Eredivisie this season, 15 fewer than the next-best defence in the division, with Timber playing a vital role in that impressive record.

Therefore, he could be a good addition in both the short- and long-term at Old Trafford, and you’d like to think that Timber will get even better over the coming years.

Back in T20I contention, Henry Nicholls ready for 'different challenges' during Bangladesh tour

Says a big bonus for New Zealand was seeing how Australia played there

Deivarayan Muthu23-Aug-2021Henry Nicholls was handed his T20I debut during the 2016 T20 World Cup against Bangladesh in Kolkata. He has only played four T20Is since, with his last appearance coming against Sri Lanka in Auckland in January 2019. With a number of New Zealand regulars heading to the second leg of the IPL in the UAE, Nicholls suddenly finds himself back in the T20I mix as a senior player despite limited experience in the shortest format.Five years ago on debut, Nicholls watched Mustafizur Rahman (off)cut through the New Zealand line-up, on the way taking 5 for 22 – his best haul in the format. Now, across the border in Dhaka, Mustafizur is in similarly strong form, having picked up seven wickets in last five matches against Australia at a remarkable economy rate of 3.52. And Nicholls is wary of Bangladesh’s slower bowlers at their home conditions ahead of New Zealand’s departure for the tours to Bangladesh, and then Pakistan.”Actually, good for us to see them [Australia] play over there and see different cricket to probably the T20 we play here [in New Zealand], with scores being a lot lower and wickets being a bit more challenging,” Nicholls said. “Certainly for us, it has been good preparation and we will also have good preparation when we get there. We have a good four or five days before the first T20 to get accustomed to the wickets, but also the heat, by the look of things, will be quite a bit muggier. These are the challenges that as an international cricketer you enjoy – different conditions and different challenges.”New Zealand have tuned themselves for those challenges by simulating spin-friendly conditions during their winter camps in Lincoln and Mount Maunganui.”Yep, that’s the beauty at the Mount as well as Lincoln, with guys being able to get up to speed before going away on tour,” Nicholls said. “Previously you go on a tour, you have three-four days in new conditions to get to speed, but certainly we’ve had that for two weeks now. For bowlers as well – getting used to those different conditions; lots of change-ups and off-pace deliveries.”Australia’s highest score across five T20Is earlier this month was 121 as they struggled on sluggish, grippy Dhaka tracks. Nicholls said that New Zealand have had “good learnings” from that series, and backed his team to find a way there.Related

“You saw from the Aussies, I guess the highest score was about 130 [121], whereas back here [in New Zealand] 180 is about the standard,” he said. “So, I guess as a batter, getting your head around that and knowing that the conditions are going to be a bit tougher. Certainly, it’s something that we are well-prepared for and certainly a big bonus for us is seeing how Australia played there and I guess the way they tried to play, which they usually play, was not as successful. Certainly, as a group, it has been good learnings for us and like I said we had a couple of good camps in the last two weeks before flying out.”Nicholls welcomed Cole McConchie, his domestic captain at Canterbury, and Ben Sears, the Wellington tearaway, into the national side as New Zealand test their depth on the upcoming winter tours in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup.”Yeah, it’s great. It has been pretty well-documented… the length [of] the tours this winter with the T20 World Cup at the end,” Nicholls said. “It’s a good opportunity for guys who are probably a bit less experienced. But I think it’s amazing if you look at the squad, the guys have actually been in the environments before. It’s exciting to have guys like Ben Sears and Cole McConchie involved and obviously they’ve been performing well domestically, so [it is an] exciting opportunity for them and all of us every time you go to the subcontinent – different conditions is a challenge and it’s something as a group that we’re looking forward to.”The New Zealand contingent will arrive in Dhaka on Tuesday and undergo a three-day quarantine before starting to train at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, where all five matches of the series will be played.”We’ve got the midnight flight out of here [Auckland] to Singapore,” Nicholls said. “So, the latest one out of Christchurch was at 3 o’clock, so we’ve been at the airport for a while. There’s been a lot of cards played already, which is probably a sign of things to come on the tour. Obviously, it’ll be pretty hotel-bound, but everyone is pretty prepared for it. I guess we are all ready for it and excited to get to know each other a bit more and enjoy a good tour.”From Bangladesh, New Zealand will fly to Pakistan, where they will play three ODIs in Rawalpindi followed by five T20Is in Lahore. Nicholls put “full faith” in New Zealand cricket’s pre-tour reconnaissance for what will be their first visit to Pakistan in 18 years.”It’s something that has been talked about a bit in the media,” he said. “But I certainly know as a players’ group and New Zealand Cricket’s point of view that the security checks that they do – and everything like that – we have full faith in that and that is being completed at the moment.”The recommendations that come from that, as a playing group, we have a lot of trust in that, so we know they won’t put us in any undue danger. And we know obviously Pakistan as well will do everything they can to have cricket in there, which is again an exciting prospect for everyone.”

James Faulkner hits out at 'disrespectful' treatment over Hobart Hurricanes exit

“I’ve put my heart and soul into it and to hear their initial offer…it cut pretty deep”

Alex Malcolm03-Sep-2021Former Australia allrounder James Faulkner feels disrespected and shattered following a contract saga that has led to his departure from Hobart Hurricanes.Faulkner, 31, will not play for Hurricanes this year, and appears very unlikely to play in the BBL altogether, after turning down a one-year contract offer that he claims was “pretty embarrassing”.Faulkner made the comments on , in an interview with close friend and Australia Test captain Tim Paine who was co-hosting the show.”I found it pretty hard to take when I first heard it on the phone,” Faulkner said. “I found it pretty disrespectful for what I’ve sort of given to Tasmanian cricket. I’ve put my heart and soul into it and to hear their initial offer, and that is what it all comes down to, it cut pretty deep.”I know what I’m worth. I’ve signed enough contracts around the world for different teams. I didn’t want more. I just wanted what was fair and what I thought I was worth and even maybe a little bit less. But it just comes back to that first offer. I didn’t feel respected as a player or a person or a Tasmanian athlete. I’m just shattered how it has all played out.”Faulkner, who last played international cricket for Australia in 2017, joined Hurricanes in his home state of Tasmania ahead of the 2018-19 BBL season after seven years at Melbourne Stars on a three-year deal that finished at the end of last season.Related

He has been plagued by a series of injuries since his international career ended and played just 12 of 29 matches in the last two BBL seasons. Last season he suffered a serious hamstring injury which ended his tournament in December. Faulkner said it was unfair for his injuries to be used against him in the negotiations.”They just used injury the whole time against me, really,” he said. “Last season I had an eight-week hamstring I did at the Gabba and tried to come back in three-and-a-half weeks and put my body on the line to come back so we had a shot at making finals and we weren’t really in the mix at that stage, which I’m happy to do and I’ll always do that. But for the coach to use that against me, I felt was wrong.”He also took aim at head coach Adam Griffith following comments he made at a press conference last week.”When you watch the news, and you see who I thought was one of my mates, as well as the head coach, say the bowling group and the team have performed well without me, first of all, and then secondly saying, we need to move on and that he didn’t really care – that cuts deep,” Faulkner said. “That’s like sticking a knife straight in my back. That’s not called for.Faulkner also claimed the lengthy BBL embargo period on contract signings had left him in limbo.”I’ve had teams make contact but the issue we have is the fact there was an embargo period with Cricket Australia and obviously you can’t speak throughout that,” Faulkner said.”And obviously because the contract negotiation went on for so long teams obviously want to sign their list. So I was sort of left stranded six months down the line. Other lists were full and that’s the big thing that hurts.”I wouldn’t have wanted to play for any other franchise anyway. The whole reason I came to the Hurricanes was to finish here and play in front of my family and friends and play with some of my best teammates that I have great memories with and for that not to happen it’s bloody disappointing.”However, teams, players, and agents are allowed to talk informally during the embargo period and often do. The embargo only applies to binding agreements meaning no contracts can be formally signed.Faulkner will now ply his trade in various leagues around the world. He performed well in this year’s PSL for Lahore Qalandars taking 13 wickets in six matches at an economy rate of 6.50. He will also look to play in the Abu Dhabi T10 and the Lanka Premier League.

BCCI announces pay hikes for domestic cricketers, compensation for Covid-19-affected 2019-20 season

Some senior cricketers stand to earn almost twice as much as they did previously

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Sep-2021Almost two years after Sourav Ganguly had announced that the financial health of domestic cricketers would be his “biggest priority” as BCCI president, the board on Monday announced sizeable hikes in match fees for men and women at the end of its apex council meeting. The new pay slabs, which will be in place 2021-22 onwards, will have the senior men earning between INR 40,000 and 60,000 [USD 540 to 810 approx] per day while senior women will earn up to INR 20,000 [USD 270 approx.] per day.In another major update, the BCCI has also decided to allot 50% match fees “as compensation” for the Covid-19-affected 2019-20 season where the board could organise just the Syed Mushtaq Ali (T20) Trophy and the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy for the senior men.Related

That hike is a small one for the players in the first category (under 20 matches), but an almost 100% hike for more experienced hands (40-plus games), while those who have played between 21 and 40 matches will earn INR 50,000 [USD 680 approx.]. Earlier, senior men’s cricketers earned INR 35,000 [USD 470 approx.] per day for first-class and one-day games, and INR 17,500 [USD 240 approx.] per game for T20s.The new pay slabs will apply to both first-class and limited-overs cricket. For the senior women, who earlier earned INR 12,500 [USD 170 approx.] per one-day match and INR 6250 [USD 85 approx.] per T20 match – there isn’t, currently, a first-class competition for women in India – the pay has been raised to INR 20,000 for playing XI members and INR 10,000 [USD 135 approx.] for those on the bench. There were upgrades for the age-group cricketers, both male and female, too. When he took over as BCCI president, Sourav Ganguly had promised to “look after the financial health of our first-class cricketers”•BCCI

Men’s Under-23 players will now earn INR 25,000 [USD 340 approx.] per day (earlier INR 17,500) if they are in the playing XIs, and INR 12,500 (earlier INR 8750) if in the reserves, while Under-19s in the playing XIs will get INR 20,000 (earlier INR 10,500) and INR 10,000 (earlier INR 5250) will go to reserve players. For the Under-16s, the corresponding amounts are INR 7000 (earlier INR 3500) and INR 3500 (INR 1750).For women, the daily fees for Under-23s, Under-19s and Under-16s have been raised from INR 5500 to INR 10,000 for those in the playing XIs and from INR 2750 to INR 5000 for those in the reserves.Till 2017-18, domestic players were paid in two instalments: a flat match fee and a bonus calculated on a pro-rata basis based on the BCCI’s gross revenue share (GRS) – its non-IPL earnings from media rights, team sponsorship rights, apparel sponsorship rights, series sponsorship rights, etc. This would be paid the following year after the accounts were ratified at the annual general meetings.Since 2018, though, the GRS component has been added to the match fees, leading to a near 200% hike for players. However, in the absence of AGMs in the past two years, the GRS component has not been ratified by the BCCI, which had left domestic players disgruntled. The pandemic then made things worse. But a few months ago, the BCCI formed a sub-committee to work out a new payment structure, including ways to compensate players who had taken a hit financially during the pandemic since March 2020.

Namibia hope to catch high-flying Pakistan off-guard

With a spot in the semi-finals virtually guaranteed, Pakistan might choose to test their bench strength

Danyal Rasool01-Nov-2021

Big picture

Is it really a World Cup if Pakistan have not lurched from crisis to catastrophe, and are not furiously mapping out probability trees, calculating net run rates, and praying that other teams help them sneak into the next round via the back door? Is it really a World Cup if Pakistan are not unpredictable, flawed and dispirited, and when rumours about infighting and leaks to the media aren’t flying around unfettered? Is it really a World Cup if Pakistan look this… good?Eight days ago, Pakistan had ahead of them games against India, New Zealand and Afghanistan to kick off the tournament with interim head coaches, and batting and bowling consultants with negligible consulting experience. There was plenty of dark humour about Pakistan being eliminated by the time these games were done, but it almost rang too true to be amusing. Eight days on, India have been decimated by ten wickets and New Zealand and Afghanistan seen off with the sort of ruthless efficiency characteristic of serial winners. With qualification to the semi-finals virtually guaranteed, Pakistan can treat the upcoming games against Namibia and Scotland almost like bonus warm-up matches, the sort of luxury no Pakistan team would dream of basking in at this stage of a World Cup.Related

  • Rohit ball or Rahul ball: which Shaheen Afridi dismissal was better?

Pakistan, though, will be the first to recognise the danger of snapping out of this purple patch just as quickly as they’ve found themselves in it, so there’s little chance of a drop-off in intensity against Namibia. It might be an opportunity to rest one or two of the assets they want sharp for the semi-finals; Shaheen Afridi is perhaps the most compelling candidate. It might also be the time to test their bench strength, with Mohammad Nawaz and Haider Ali waiting in the wings should they be required. But now that Pakistan seem to have unearthed the formula to win T20 games once more, it might not ultimately matter which individual players line up against Namibia. It’s about the team, not individual superstars. How often, indeed, do you say that about Pakistan?Namibia, meanwhile, aren’t there to be anyone’s sidekick. Very much still in the tournament and in contention for the semi-finals, Gerhard Erasmus’ side have played an eye-catching brand of T20 cricket that has seen them come further this tournament than most would have expected. They have a quality fast bowler in Ruben Trumpelmann, a slew of useful spinners, a solid-enough top order, and a superstar in David Wiese. Their successes haven’t been one-man shows; several of these players have stood up at various times to help them through the first round and then beat Scotland in the group. If they can catch Pakistan in a moment of complacency, they might just have the potential to put them under pressure, and in the past, Pakistan under pressure have found themselves doing some funny things.Everyone’s eyes, though, will be firmly on Pakistan, suddenly among the mid-tournament favourites. Namibia, though, have a shot, and for now, that is all they can ask for.

Form guide

Namibia: LWWWL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Pakistan: WWWWL

In the spotlight

Perhaps no side is as familiar with David Wiese of late as Pakistan, given his exploits in the PSL over the past few seasons. Plying his trade with Lahore Qalandars, he has been among the shining stars of a struggling franchise. His exploits as finisher are already the stuff of legend, and what he achieved with the Qalandars has translated seamlessly into his form with Namibia. He has been his side’s highest scorer (142 runs), boasts their highest strike rate (135.23), and has the highest average (47.33) for all their players with more than 60 runs. Add to that his bowling capabilities, and it’s hard not to conclude that there are very few sides at this tournament Wiese would not get into. He’s very familiar with the opposition and the venue by dint of his PSL experience, which makes him one to watch.Ruben Trumpelmann gives Namibia genuine quality with the new ball•Getty Images

Hasan Ali‘s bowling form is the one crease Pakistan will want to iron out. In what has been just about a perfect tournament for almost every other player, Hasan has struggled to find the lines and lengths, either in the middle overs or at the death that make him so lethal at his best. An 18th over that went for 21 let Afghanistan back into the game, and he conceded 44 in his four overs against India last Sunday. Less importantly, though perhaps pertinently in hindsight, he couldn’t defend 18 in the final over of the warm-up game against South Africa either. Add to that a worrying habit of bowling the odd no-ball – he has delivered four in his last two matches – and it’s hard not to conclude that things can only go up for Hasan in this tournament. Pitch and conditions

Pace has played a bigger role in Abu Dhabi than at the other venues, and the ground – which boasts the biggest playing area – has produced surprisingly low-scoring matches. It’s expected to be warm in the evening, with the possibility of dew always a factor.

Stats and trivia

Quotes

“You don’t have a lot of time to harp on it [the defeat against Afghanistan], you need to reassess quickly, you need to reset. So the last 24 hours was a matter of just trying to relax because we know how big tomorrow is and what we’re going to face. It’s important that we take the learnings from yesterday and improve on those points. Tomorrow is going to be a great experience for the players but we need to be 20% better.”
