Du Plessis: 'Disappointed with the lack of runs in last five overs'

RCB’s captain admits that his team was “at least 20 runs” short of a challenging total

Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Faf du Plessis has admitted to being disappointed with the lack of runs from his team in the last five overs at the Wankhede after Mumbai Indians chased down a 200-run target on a canter.Du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell added 120 runs in just 62 deliveries for the third wicket and laid the platform for a big finish. But after Maxwell fell to Jason Behrendorff in the 13th over, Mahipal Lomror and du Plessis also followed suit in the next ten deliveries and Royal Challengers could add just 53 runs in the last 35 balls.”At least 20 [runs],” du Plessis told the broadcaster when asked how short his team were from a potentially winning score.Related

Mumbai mow down 200 to jump from eighth to third

“I think in the context of the wickets so far this season it feels like anything under 220 with Mumbai’s powerful batting line-up, and obviously they are a strong chasing team and bat very deep,” du Plessis said. “So we were very disappointed.””I think we didn’t capitalise in those last five overs. That’s when on a wicket like this you can really do some damage. So disappointed with the last five overs and the lack of runs.”Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, praised quick bowler Akash Madhwal for his execution at the death. Bowling to Wanindu Hasaranga and Kedar Jadhav, Madhwal conceded just six runs in the final over.”He [Madhwal] was with us last year as well and we saw the skillset he brings. All we wanted to do was give him that specific role so he focuses on that and we told him this is what you have to do,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony.”I know these are tough overs to bowl but he’s quite confident. When I speak to him, the responses that I get, he is quite confident. He is a leader as well. He leads his Uttarakhand team. So he has got a lot of knowledge about how he wants to bowl, what sort of field placements he wants to have.”Rohit also said that Royal Challengers looked set for a score in the region of 220 and praised his team for reining things back in the last few overs, something which the team has struggled with this season.”It was crucial what we did there at the back end. Restricting them to less than 200 was a great effort,” Rohit said. “At one stage it was looking 220 or something like that and the way we have bowled in the last part, it could have been 220 or maybe more.”2:04

Dasgupta: Haven’t seen someone with Suryakumar’s wrist-work in modern-day cricket

Du Plessis: ‘Suryakumar makes a captain extremely grey’In the chase, Ishan Kishan got Mumbai Indians off to a blinder as he smashed his way to 42 off 21 deliveries. But Hasaranga had him caught behind and then trapped Rohit lbw in the fifth over. However, Suryakumar Yadav, with Nehal Wadhera for company, dispelled any chances of a Royal Challengers comeback with a 35-ball 83.Suryakumar hit six sixes and seven fours to help Mumbai complete the chase in 16.3 overs — the quickest that a target of 200 or more has been chased down in the IPL.”He [Suryakumar] is one of the best isn’t he? When he gets going, he’s really difficult to bowl to,” du Plessis said.”He makes a captain extremely grey because he’s got so many options. You don’t feel like you can really shut him down,” he said. “That’s why I said he is one of the greats at the moment.”

Ajeet Dale's maiden six-for puts Gloucestershire firmly in charge

Gloucestershire 231 (T Price 109, Leach 4-49) and 172 for 3 (Dent 66*, Bracey 51) lead Worcestershire 157 (Dale 6-41, T Price 4-58) by 246 runsAjeet Singh Dale’s career-best bowling performance and half centuries from Chris Dent and James Bracey steered Gloucestershire into a powerful position heading into the final day of the LV=Insurance County Championship match with Worcestershire at New Road.Dale bowled with considerable pace to picked up the final three Worcestershire wickets on the third morning to finish with 6 for 41 from 17.1 overs as Gloucestershire established a first-innings lead of 74.It was his first ever five-for in first class cricket and then Dent fought his way through a testing time with the new ball before he and Bracey cemented Gloucestershire’s position of strength and extended their advantage to 220 before bad light intervened. For Worcestershire, there was the encouragement of Josh Tongue working up a good head of pace which brought him three wickets. But they can still expect to face a daunting target on the final day in what are still bowler-friendly conditions. After the wash-out of the second day, mobile heating apparatus was needed to dry out the bowlers run-ups at both ends before play was able to get underway at 12 noon with a minimum of 88 overs remaining.Seventeen wickets had fallen on the first day to a mixture of fine seam bowling and poor shot selection. Worcestershire resumed on 118 for 7 under cloudy skies and Dale polished off the innings after a morning spell of 7.1-2-18-3.He made his senior debut for Hampshire in 2020, playing two Championship games, before moving to Gloucestershire at the end of 2021 season.Dale made eight Championship appearances last summer and signed a two-year contract extension in January until the end of the 2025 campaign. He did not take a wicket in the opening game of the campaign against Glamorgan but was a constant threat to the Worcestershire batters.Matthew Waite, a century-maker in the opening game against Derbyshire, added only seven to his overnight 44 before he pushed at a delivery and edged to second slip.Tongue survived 52 balls for 11 before he lost his leg stump to Dale to complete his first five-for in first class cricket. Dale then wrapped up proceedings when Dillon Pennington drove at a delivery and gave keeper James Bracey his fifth catch of the innings.Price finished with 4 for 58 from 16 overs to add to his maiden first class century on day one. When Gloucestershire batted, Dent had a let off on six when Ed Pollock failed to hold onto a head high chance at first slip off Joe Leach.Dent and Marcus Harris were given a searching examination against the new ball and there was much playing and missing but they fought their way through to raise the half-century stand in 18 overs.Tongue bowled an impressive initial spell and eventually made a breakthrough when Harris (26) deliberately tried to uppercut over the slips and was caught behind. There continued to be enough in the pitch to encourage the bowlers. But Dent began to grow in authority and confidence and greeted Brett D’Oliveira’s introduction into the attack with a straight six.He completed a 106 ball half century, his second of the season after his 78 versus Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens.Tongue returned to have Bracey, 51, caught behind and, after a short break for bad light, accounted for Miles Hammond who attempted a pull but lobbed a catch to mid on.

He's now worth 1150% more: Ipswich ace has been "phenomenal" after leaving

Even the most optimistic Ipswich Town supporter will be having a hard time convincing themselves that their beloved Tractor Boys will live to see another day in the Premier League past this season.

Kieran McKenna’s men are now nine points cut adrift from 17th-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers, with five crushing defeats from their last six league games not helping to boost the mood at Portman Road whatsoever.

Liam Delap

Ultimately, for as much as they do have ten-goal attacker Liam Delap up top, their defensive woes continue to cost them dearly as an instant return to the Championship looks nailed on.

Why Ipswich's defence has let McKenna down

Amazingly, the relegation-threatened side’s last clean sheet in league action was against Chelsea in December, with 2025 unfortunately seeing the goals flood in.

Nottingham Forest would run out comprehensive 4-2 victors over Ipswich last time out in the Premier League, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s visitors only needing to register six shots on target in total to beat Alex Palmer with relative ease.

McKenna even boldly ditched first-choice shot-stopper Arijanet Muric mid-way through the campaign to try and shore up his leaky side, but it hasn’t had the desired effect, with Ipswich now up to a dire 62 goals conceded.

Not even January additions in the form of Ben Godfrey have helped in this regard either, with the Suffolk side potentially left to rue letting a former centre-back depart.

Now starring in the Premier League, it’s safe to say his career has been a great deal better away from Portman Road.

Former Ipswich defender has seen his value rise 1150%

Away from their current lowly state, Ipswich have a fair few titan-like defenders grace the Portman Road turf, with faces such as Luke Chambers fondly remembered to this day as a warrior defensively having made 396 appearances for the club.

A certain Adam Webster is arguably not remembered in the same gushing manner, but the now Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back did begin to make a name for himself in the senior game in Suffolk, arriving in 2016 from Portsmouth for a fee of just around £800k.

Webster would go on to make 53 appearances for the Tractor Boys before moving on to Bristol City for £3.5m, having tallied up one goal and three assists as a composed player on the ball playing out from the back.

This move to the Robins would set him on his way to stardom, with the Seagulls number four featuring across just 47 games at Ashton Gate before costing the South Coast side a whopping £20m to a pick up, making him their most expensive capture in 2019.

Whilst the 6 foot 3 colossus has dealt with many an injury annoyance since entering the building, Webster has proven himself to be a reliable head whenever thrown into Premier League action donning Brighton blue and white, with two clean sheets even coming his way this season from 11 limited appearances.

Worryingly, Luke Woolfenden back at Portman Road only has one to shout about, despite making two more appearances as a utility figure under McKenna.

Lauded as “phenomenal” in the past by football analyst H, on top of also being labelled as a “great leader” by boss Fabian Hurzeler, it’s clear there’s life in Webster’s legs still despite injury setbacks, with the 30-year-old’s current transfer valuation sitting pretty at £10m according to Transfermarkt.

That is an 1150% increase from his original £800k value when he first walked through the Portman Road doors and a 185% increase on the £3m fee he was sold for.

Now, Webster will be keen to establish himself as a Premier League-worthy defender even more, while his ex-employers likely slip down to the EFL.

Raza trumps Pathirana as Punjab Kings win last-ball thriller

Devon Conway’s unbeaten 92 and MS Dhoni’s late sixes took CSK to 200 but it didn’t prove enough

Moody reckons Conway among the IPL’s best overseas buys of all time

Punjab Kings 201 for 6 (Prabhsimran 42, Livingstone 40, Deshpande 3-49, Jadeja 2-32) beat Chennai Super Kings 200 for 4 (Conway 92*, Gaikwad 37) by four wicketsA last-ball thriller that ended with Sikandar Raza pulling Matheesha Pathirana for three quick runs stunned a Chepauk crowd that may have expected their team to return home with a win and get closer to the top of the table. Chennai Super Kings had almost everything going for them; Devon Conway walloped an unbeaten 92, MS Dhoni stretched their total to 200 with two sixes to end the innings, and they strangled Kings’ chase through the middle overs, but lost despite largely being ahead through the final over thanks to Pathirana’s accuracy. With nine to win off the last over, Raza and Shahrukh Khan couldn’t hit a single boundary against Pathirana’s dipping deliveries. After a single, a leg bye, a dot ball and two twos off Pathirana’s yorkers and slower balls, Kings needed three off the last ball. Raza shuffled across and pulled a short-of-length slower ball over square leg, landing it right in between deep fine leg and deep midwicket to secure three and seal victory with his arms aloft. The two points took Kings to 10 points alongside three other teams, and to fifth place on the table, just behind Super Kings on net run rate.Sikandar Raza celebrates after taking Kings to a tense win•BCCILivingstone turns tables at the right time
Super Kings were favourites when Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran struggled to score freely off Pathirana and Maheesh Theekshana. With 72 to win off 30, Livingstone got to face Tushar Deshpande and belted three sixes in four balls with four leg byes in between. Even though he fell off the fifth ball of the over, Kings still had Jitesh Sharma and Shahrukh to come, and the 24-run over brought their equation down to 48 off 24.Curran and Jitesh slammed straight sixes off Ravindra Jadeja in the 17th, but Pathirana was going to bowl two of the last three overs. He removed Curran’s off stump with a stunning, full delivery that swerved past his outside edge, and with 22 needed off 12, Kings went after Deshpande in the 19th to try and ensure they didn’t leave too much for the last over. Jitesh lofted the first ball over cover for four and got out to a contentious decision two balls later when substitute fielder Shaik Rasheed caught him at the wide long-on boundary while almost touching the boundary cushions with his foot. With 15 required off eight, Raza edged his first ball for four to make it a 13-run over.Even though Pathirana sent down an excellent last over, Raza manipulated the field perfectly to pick ones and twos and sealed the match with a hard-run three.Boundaries rain in Kings’ powerplay, but not beyond
Kings came out all guns blazing in a steep chase. Shikhar Dhawan danced down off the second ball and went on to smash 21 off nine balls in Akash Singh’s first two overs. Prabhsimran Singh took on Theekshana’s carrom ball at the other end in a 12-run fourth over, and Kings raced to 46 for no loss in four overs.Dhawan sliced Deshpande to short third in the fifth over to fall for 28, but Prabhsimran kept his foot on the pedal with at least one boundary an over before being stumped off a 100kph Jadeja delivery in the ninth. It was then that Kings went through a slowdown, with Atharva Taide managing just 13 off 16 before falling to Jadeja in a three-run 11th over. Livingstone and Curran struggled to score freely off the Sri Lankan duo, scoring just 22 runs in overs 12 to 14, which pushed the asking rate beyond 12. But Livingstone soon broke the shackles against Deshpande, and Kings were back on track.Devon Conway made 92 not out, his fifth half-century in his last six innings•BCCICSK make quick start on a slow pitch
The Kings bowlers had to bowl in the unforgiving Chennai heat, and they were made to sweat further by Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway. Gaikwad showed excellent timing whereas Conway took the aerial route more often, such as when he hit Curran for back-to-back boundaries down the ground in the sixth over, which went for 16. Super Kings, who have lost the fewest wickets in the powerplay this IPL, finished the phase on 57 for 0.Conway smashes fifty, Dube promoted to take on spinners
Spinners were always going to be in focus at Chepauk. Rahul Chahar, Kings’ lead spinner, was introduced in the powerplay and the openers hit a six each off him down the ground to push the run rate towards nine. Conway also reeled off consecutive fours off Raza’s flat offbreaks before the bowler unleashed a legbreak to have Gaikwad stumped for 37.Super Kings promoted Dube to counter the spinners, and he also pulled Kagiso Rabada for six soon after Conway reverse-swept Raza to raise a 30-ball fifty.Conway bosses the middle overs
At 121 for 1 after 13, Kings brought back Arshdeep Singh, who struck when Dube holed out to long-on while attempting his third six. Super Kings kept sending out left-hand batters – Moeen Ali came in next – and they kept attacking the spinners. Conway and Moeen lapped up Livingstone for a 16-run 15th over, and Conway hit two more fours with sweeps off Chahar, before Arshdeep and Rabada slowed things a little with 11 boundary-free balls in the 18th and 19th overs. The Dhoni show
Once looking set for 200, Super Kings were 185 with an over to go. Two hundred looked even more distant when Jadeja fell off the first ball of the 20th and Dhoni managed just one off his first two balls. But once Dhoni got the strike back, he smoked two sixes to end the innings, an uppercut and a leg-side whack off a low full-toss from Curran. Conway stayed unbeaten on 92 off 52 with 16 fours and a six.

Son upgrade: Spurs make contact over £25m dynamo with "an eye for goal"

There are only two current Tottenham Hotspur players who started Mauricio Pochettino’s final game: Ben Davies and Son Heung-min.

The former has been a reliable if unspectacular servant to the club and will be remembered fondly by the fans, but the latter has been a bonafide star, an icon of the club and the Premier League.

However, the South Korean joined the club a decade ago and will turn 33 in the summer, and while his numbers are still decent, he clearly cannot impact games in the same way anymore.

Spurs striker Heung-min Son

He is simply a victim of time, with research from The Athletic revealing that wingers see a dramatic decline in their ability to beat defenders when they reach 30 years old.

So, if Ange Postecoglou wants to take the club forward next season, he should be looking at a long-term replacement for the club legend, and based on recent reports, Daniel Levy and Co may have identified just the player.

Tottenham's winger search

According to a recent report out of Spain, Spurs are incredibly keen on Feyenoord’s Brazilian dynamo Igor Paixão.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

In fact, alongside the Lilywhites, the report has revealed that North London rivals Arsenal, as well as Newcastle United, Liverpool and Bournemouth, have made contact and expressed their interest in signing the goalscoring wideman.

Fortunately, while the number of interested parties is far from ideal, the Dutch giants reportedly value the 24-year-old maestro at just €30m, which comes out to about £25m.

It could still be a difficult transfer to get over the line, but with how well Paixão has played this season, it’s one Spurs should fight for, especially as he could be the perfect upgrade on Son.

How Paixão compares to Son

Now, when we get down to it, there are two key areas in which Paixão has an advantage over Son, and the first is longevity.

By this, we mean the simple fact that, at 24 years old, the Brazilian is going to be able to play at the very highest level for far longer than the South Korean will be, especially in the high-intensity system Postecoglou wants to implement.

The second area where the Feyenoord star, whom U23 scout Antonio Mango has described as having a real “eye for goal”, has the edge is raw output.

For example, in 38 appearances this season, totalling 3176 minutes, the “quality” Macapá-born winger, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored 11 goals and provided 15 assists.

That means he is currently averaging a goal involvement every 1.46 games, or every 122.15 minutes, which is an undeniably impressive level of output.

In contrast, the former Bayer Leverkusen ace has scored 11 goals and provided 11 assists in 40 appearances, totalling 2835 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.81 games, or every 128.86 minutes.

While that’s still an impressive level of productivity from the Chuncheon-born icon, it’s still less than his potential competition and, given where he is in his career, we’d be stunned if he was able to match it again next year.

Ultimately, Son is undeniably a modern-day great for both Spurs and the Premier League as a whole, but he is much nearer the end of his career than the start, and while he’s plying his trade in a non-top five league at the moment, Paixão looks to have the raw ingredients to be an effective upgrade on the 32-year-old.

Therefore, Levy and Co should do what they can to bring him to N17 before one of their rivals beat them to his signature.

Sunderland director in talks with "outstanding" star as Leeds work on deal

Looking to take full advantage of his contract situation, Leeds United have now commenced “work” on their move to sign an “outstanding” defensive reinforcement for Daniel Farke this summer.

Leeds transfer news

The Whites have their sights set on Championship promotion but they, more than most, will be well aware just how quickly things can change in England’s second division. With 11 games left and five points between themselves at the top of the league and Burnley in third, those at Elland Road will be desperate to get over the line as soon as possible.

Once potentially over the line, they can turn their attention to the transfer window, where they may have to enjoy their most important summer yet under the 49ers if back in the Premier League.

Leeds have watched on as Southampton, Ipswich Town and Leicester City have all paid the price for their recruitment decisions this season and will not want to make the same mistakes.

Not just Kristensen: 49ers must sell Leeds flop who's cost £525k-per-game

Rasmus Kristensen looks to be on his way out of Leeds United, with another player needing to follow him.

Mar 6, 2025

With that in mind, the Whites have reportedly already got one target in mind. Transfer reporter Graeme Bailey told Sunderland AFC News that Leeds have commenced “work” on signing Dennis Cirkin from Sunderland this summer.

Bailey said: “Keep a close eye on Cirkin. I am told a lot of Premier League clubs have been doing work on him. Chelsea, Tottenham, Crystal Palace, West Ham, Everton and Leeds – he is an outstanding prospect.”

The left-back has just over a year left on his current Black Cats deal and whilst Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman has revealed that talks over a new contract are underway, the parties are yet to reach a resolution.

"Outstanding" Cirkin could replace Firpo

By signing Cirkin, Leeds could solve an issue of their own. As things stand, the Yorkshire club are set to lose key defender Junior Firpo on a free deal at the end of the season once his current contract expires. An experienced left-back and Farke’s outright starter, failing to replace Firpo would be a frustrating way to begin any potential Premier League return.

Cirkin, however, is more than capable of easing that blow and stepping up to the Premier League whilst doing so.

Although a more defensive option compared to Firpo, whose output speaks for itself, that may not be a bad thing if Leeds find themselves in the Premier League next season.

As Southampton, Leicester and Ipswich have found out the hard way this season, promoted teams simply cannot walk into the Premier League and instantly step onto the front foot – they need to be far more robust than that. Cirkin, as highlighted by the number of times he has won possession back for Sunderland this season, would have no trouble adapting to that style.
