Talks held: Man Utd now eye £40m+ speedster Liverpool want to replace Trent

Manchester United have now held talks with a “sensational” ace in the hope of beating Liverpool to his signature, according to a new report.

Man Utd keeping their transfer options open

As the summer transfer window gets ever closer, the transfer stories begin to heat up, and the Red Devils look to have their eyes set on numerous players who they hope will help improve Ruben Amorim’s team.

Southampton’s Tyler Dibling is a player who has been on United’s radar for a while now, but it appears that the Premier League side are ready to step up their interest. It is being reported that United are now ready to sign Dibling, as other teams circle with interest, but they may have to pay as much as £100 million to get the young Englishman to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils see Dibling as someone who can become their new right wing-back as well as possibly operate as one of their number 10s.

But he is not the only player who is on their radar for becoming their new right wing-back, as the Red Devils are willing to battle Barcelona to win the race for Givairo Read, who currently plays for Feyenoord. He could cost United just £20 million this summer.

Man Utd battling Liverpool in the race to sign Frimpong

But if the 20-time Premier League champions are willing to pay more, then they may turn their attentions elsewhere. According to TBR Football, Man United have held talks over the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen but face a strong battle to secure his transfer.

Bayer Leverkusen's Nathan Tella celebrates scoring their second goal with JeremieFrimpong

Liverpool are keen on signing the Dutch international as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, but they now face competition from United and Man City, who have both held talks with Frimpong’s camp in recent weeks.

It doesn’t say how those talks went or what they were focused on, but it is another sign that Amorim wants to strengthen his right-side this summer.

United see Frimpong, who has been dubbed “sensational” by The Guardian columnist Dominik Diamond, as a perfect fit for their right wing-back role. Frimpong has played a similar role at Leverkusen, where he scored nine goals and recorded seven assists in 31 Bundesliga games last season as Leverkusen were crowned league champions.

Frimpong’s potential arrival at Old Trafford would see him replace Diogo Dalot, who has come under scrutiny throughout different times of this 2024/25 campaign. Frimpong’s ability to get up and down the pitch, as well as create and score goals, makes him the ideal player Amorim wants in his team, but it is going to cost the Red Devils £40 million plus to get a deal over the line.

Uh oh: Rival club make contact over signing "unbelievable" £40m Chelsea star

A Premier League club have now made contact over signing an “unbelievable” Chelsea player this summer, according to a report.

Chelsea stars attracting attention

Although the Blues’ form has taken a downward turn since the end of 2024, with their title aspirations fading, there have been encouraging signs this season, and they are still in a strong position to return to the Champions League in the 2025/26 campaign.

As such, it is little wonder some of Enzo Maresca’s star players are attracting attention ahead of the summer transfer window, and Real Madrid have recently joined the race for midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who would be very keen on joining the Spanish side.

There have also been suggestions that Christopher Nkunku could be in line for a move this summer, with Bayern Munich interested in signing the forward, and the west Londoners would not stand in his way if an offer came in.

While Chelsea would be nonplussed by Nkunku’s departure, a new report has revealed they are desperate to keep hold of Levi Colwill – and there is now doubt over the defender’s future at Stamford Bridge amid interest from Liverpool.

The Reds have made contact to discuss the possibility of signing Colwill in the summer transfer window, which could be a concern for Maresca as the centre-back is viewed as a future captain and a key part of the squad.

Chelsea'sLeviColwillcelebrates after the match

The Englishman has previously been valued at £40m, but there is no inclination BlueCo would be willing to sanction his departure, given how highly he is rated by many key figures at the club.

Promisingly, the report states the player himself is not interested in a move anytime soon, having re-affirmed his commitment to his boyhood club by signing a new six-year contract in 2023.

"Unbelievable" Colwill now key player for Maresca

The 22-year-old has emerged as a key player for Chelsea this season, making 27 appearances in the Premier League, and he has put in some impressive performances in recent weeks, despite his side’s drop-off in form.

The Cobham academy graduate has also received high praise from BBC Sport journalist Nizaar Kinsella, who lauded him as “unbelievable”, while Maresca has praised him for his leadership qualities:

“The one that is doing fantastic in this kind of thing is Levi. Levi probably at the beginning of the season was not a leader but now you can see that he is one of the guys that is always speaking. We need to build that.”

As such, it is clear to see why some key figures at Chelsea view Colwill as a future captain, and they should make sure to knock back any advances from Liverpool this summer.

Ellie Threlkeld, Tara Norris fifties secure Thunder's second tie of season

Thunder score 66 runs off their last five overs after Vipers had restricted their reply

Thunder secured their second tie in this season’s Rachel Heyhoe Flint Trophy in the most dramatic fashion when Ellie Threlkeld’s 60 and Tara Norris’s unbeaten 51 brought their side within one run of chasing down to 262 to defeat Southern Vipers. This outcome seemed unlikely in the extreme when Georgia Adams’ bowlers were restricting the home side’s reply and the match featured a fine debut by Australian fast bowler Maitlan Brown, who took 3 for 52 from ten overs. But in all other respects, a superb match will be remembered for Threlkeld’s extraordinary assault and for Norris’s fearless hitting as Thunder scored 66 runs off their last five overs. The home side’s No. 9 hit a six off Adams’ penultimate ball of the match before being restricted to two runs off the final delivery.Related

In the opening hour of the day, the visitors’ openers, Ella McCaughan and Abi Norgrove gave their side’s innings a fluent and productive start, 42 runs being scored in the first ten overs. The true wicket and glassy outfield ensured that batters received full value for their attacking shots throughout the day and Norgrove, in particular, warmed to her task, hitting successive boundaries off both Mahika Gaur and Norris. It was no surprise that Thunder skipper Threlkeld called on her battery of spinners early in the innings but they made no breakthroughs until the 21st over when Emma Lamb had Norgrove stumped by Threlkeld for 48, thus ending her 85-run stand with McCaughan. In the next over Adams was bowled through the gate by an off-spinner from Fi Morris but the loss of wickets did little to curb a run rate than cantered along at a minimum of four an over throughout the innings.Emily Windsor continued the assault but was caught behind by Threlkeld off Laura Jackson for 49 when attempting the cut that would have brought her a half-century. Linsey Smith maintained the charge and was unbeaten on 42 when the innings closed.None of Thunder’s bowlers escaped punishment but Morris returned the respectable figures of 1 for 34 from eight overs and Lamb took 2 for 35 from seven and Jackson 2 for 43 off nine. In addition to her catch and stumping, Threlkeld conceded no byes and kept magnificently throughout the 50 overs.Despite the early loss of Lamb, who was athletically caught and bowled by Brown, Thunder’s attempt to score at 5.26 runs an over to win the game began positively. Both Seren Smale and Naomi Dattani seized every opportunity to attack and it was almost a shock in the twelfth over when Smale was lured forward by a flighted off-spinner from Ava Lee and stumped by Rhianna Southby for 22.That wicket still left Thunder reasonably placed on 50 for 2 but the next hour’s cricket went a long way towards deciding the outcome of the contest. First Morris was hurried into a pull by Brown and skied a catch to Mary Taylor at mid on.Then, having made a composed 43, Dattani drove a return catch back to Adams and two overs later Smith claimed the vital wicket of Deandra Dottin, who played inside an arm ball and was leg before wicket for 21.Threlkeld’s late assault on the Vipers’ attack put the outcome in doubt for a time but her dismissal, leg before to Adams in the 48th over, seemed to have settled matters before Norris brought her side far closer to their target than anyone had believed possible.

Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand tells Ruben Amorim which striker he should sign as Red Devils weigh up move for Victor Osimhen or Viktor Gyokeres

Rio Ferdinand has called on his former club Manchester United to pursue the signature of Victor Osimhen instead of Viktor Goykeres.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

In an interview with Mirror Sport, Ferdinand heralded the 26-year-old Nigerian as the right solution to United's lack of firepower up front. Osihmen's track record in France, Italy, and Turkey, makes him the more proven prospect according to the United legend. The Napoli striker spent last season at Galatasary where he bagged 37 goals in 45 games in all competitions. That output dwarves the seven league goals shared by the inexperienced pair of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee in the 2024-25 season.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

United have rekindled their interest in Osimhen, but are widely tipped to be competing with Arsenal for Gyokeres' services. The Swedish striker has a reported release clause of £85m, while Napoli's asking price of £63m for Osimhen was met by Al-Hilal. The Nigerian decided against a move to the Middle East, opening the door for United.

  • WHAT RIO FERDINAND SAID

Ferdinand said: "[Man United need] a centre-forward with experience. That's it. I think United can go and get a lot of players and get loads of stuff. But I think it's been evident that Hojlund came in for huge money and hasn't hit the ground running, has struggled really. Zirkzee hasn't done much better than him, really.

"So, I think you need someone in all the good teams you see. They normally have at least one of the attacking players, normally the number nine. And you go, actually, yeah, I can pin my hat on him. I can rely on him.

"And I think Hojlund's lack of experience has been a big factor. So, a striker, I don't want any striker. I think I've said it on my podcast many times. I think a striker with experience, knows his right way around the football field, who the young ones they've invested in, like Hojlund and Zirkzee and Chido [Obi] can learn from."

On Gyokeres, he added: "I think Gyokeres, everyone's talking about him. Again, I think if I'm looking at the market now and I had to pick him or Osimhen, I'd probably pick Osimhen because of that experience.

"And he's shown he's done it in multiple leagues now. And he's done it internationally as well. I think he's a top-class number nine who, again, the young players will be able to learn from. I'm not saying that Gyokeres would fail. I'm just saying that if I had a preference, I would go there."

WHAT NEXT FOR VICTOR OSIMHEN AND VIKTOR GYOKERES?

Whether Gyokeres ultimately ends up in Manchester or London, it appears the Swede's future resides in England. Should United fail to pip the gunners to his signature, they have a fantastic second option in Oshimen who has solidified his status as one of Europe's most prolific strikers, regardless of the league he finds himself in.

Jamie Porter gives Essex the edge in title-challenge dogfight

Fifteen wickets fall on opening day as Hampshire blink first at Ageas Bowl

ECB Reporters Network25-Jul-2023Jamie Porter claimed a five-wicket haul as Essex rolled title rivals Hampshire out for 120 in the LV=Insurance County Championship.Fast bowler Porter took 5 for 37 on a bowler-friendly Ageas Bowl pitch, with Simon Harmer assisting with 3 for 26.Essex replied by reaching 145 for 6 before close, to take a 25-run lead into day two, with two wickets apiece for Kyle Abbott and John Turner kept the visitors in check.Essex won the toss and Tom Westley gleefully put his hosts into bat first on a pitch on which appeared to have been prepared to promote a positive result. That outcome is needed for both sides, placed second and third coming into this round of fixtures, in their quests to chase down runaway leaders Surrey – who led Essex and Hampshire by 14 and 29 points with four matches to go.Hampshire are 50 years without a Championship title and is the only trophy Rod Bransgrove hasn’t won in his 23 years as chairman – this will be his last chance after announcing his decision to step down at the end of the season before play.Hampshire openers Ian Holland and Fletcha Middleton were both snared out by Porter before seven overs had been completed. But Essex’s early joy was tainted by Shane Snater – who had replaced the ill Doug Bracewell – limping off after five balls, having pulled out of a delivery just before reaching his stride. The loss of a main bowler mattered little as Paul Walter stepped up and angled across James Vince, and with Hampshire eventually bowled out inside 39 overs it meant fewer miles in the legs.Ben Brown was well caught at first slip by Simon Harmer, Nick Gubbins was loose on the drive off Porter and Liam Dawson top-edged a sweep to fine leg to leave Hampshire 79 for six at lunch.Porter is back to his destructive best this season after a series of lean seasons, by his high standards.Having put himself on the England radar with Championship wicket tallies of at least 48 between 2015 and 2019, Porter claimed 34 scalps in 2021 and only 19 wickets last season, with Sam Cook rising to lead the attack. His five at the Ageas Bowl took him to 42 wickets for the season – only spinning team-mate Harmer and Nottinghamshire’s Brett Hutton have more.Porter was rewarded for his potent accuracy with his second five-for of the season by spearing into Felix Organ’s back pad, before James Fuller advanced and slapped the next ball he bowled to deep cover.Harmer wrapped up the tail with Turner edging to slip and Mohammad Abbas slogged to long on as Hampshire were bowled out for 120.In reply, Nick Browne was bowled by Abbas in the fifth over. as the pitch remained unmoved in its bowling friendliness.Abbott picked up Alastair Cook and Paul Walter in a double wicket maiden to see Essex to 16 for three and in danger of copying Hampshire’s low score. But Essex did something Hampshire couldn’t do; form partnerships.Only Gubbins and Vince’s 39-run stand had topped 20, while Tom Westley and Matt Critchley added 41 before Critchley and Michael Pepper scored 36 together before Pepper and Adam Rossington joined forces for 25.Vince, who managed to negotiate his way to three replacement balls, only called on Vitality Blast hero Turner in the 34th over. The wait had Turner raring to go as he bounded in to crash into Critchley’s pads first ball before later finding Pepper’s outside edge.Essex edged into a first-innings lead with Rossington and Harmer reaching the end of the day with a platform to secure an important first-innings lead.

'It's just more intent' – hit-the-deck Romario makes a striking impression

Romario Shepherd was named after the Brazilian footballer, one the greatest strikers in that sport. Shepherd was born in Linden, where football – or track and field – is arguably more popular than cricket, but he took to cricket. Tall, strong and muscular, Shepherd towered over other boys during age-group and regional cricket. He has a big presence in the middle and there are no half-measures with him. He was always meant to be a cricket allrounder. On Saturday, Shepherd towered over India’s IPL stars, taking career-best ODI figures of 3 for 37. He took out Ishan Kishan, India’s new No. 4 Axar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja to help dismiss India for 181 and fashion West Indies’ first ODI win against India in almost four years. India were without their regular captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who were both rested, but nevertheless, Shepherd’s spell was a significant step in his progress.Shepherd has played 24 ODIs – and T20 cricket all around the world – but popular opinion is that he leaks easy runs, as his T20 economy rate of 9.08 confirms. His List A economy rate of 5.49 is more acceptable, and though Jason Holder is also prone to leaking runs at the death, he offers West Indies greater control in the powerplay and middle overs. In the absence of Holder, who has made himself unavailable for the ODI series against India, Shepherd married his hit-the-deck hustle with control and proved that he could do the job in fairly helpful conditions.Related

Odean Smith was West Indies’ hit-the-deck option against UAE in Sharjah, but Shepherd is much taller than him and pounds the deck even harder. Keemo Paul had recently played for West Indies in the World Cup Qualifier and the Emirates, but he is more known for his new-ball skills and slower variations at the death. The Barbados pitch for the second ODI on Saturday was a used one, but Shepherd still generated enough pace and bounce to leave India shaken. When Shepherd was called into the attack, Kishan was already in his shot-making groove and then got four more when he chopped Shepherd between backward point and deep third. Two legal balls later, Shepherd bowled a similar short ball, but this skidded on to the bat and had Kishan splicing a catch to backward point, where Alick Athanaze leapt to his right to complete a spectacular catch. Then, in his next over, Shepherd dug the ball in even shorter and created a sharper angle from around the wicket to end Axar’s promotion after eight balls. Axar had tried to sway his upper body inside the line and drop his gloves, but Shepherd rushed him and cramped him. Shepherd proceeded to bounce Jadeja out, too, and damage India even further.”It was just more intent,” Shepherd said after the innings. “I just tried to run in hard and hit the pitch because when you hit the wicket, you get something out of it. So, that was in my bowling plan and especially to some of the Indian batsmen, I don’t want to get too full to them. When I came in, I got a wicket and set the tone. Basically, the guys started to push a bit and then we get another wicket that put pressure back on them.”Romario Shepherd hurried India’s batters with his pace and bounce•AFP/Getty Images

The past few weeks have been particularly grim for West Indies cricket, starting with the failure to qualify for the 50-over World Cup for the first time. Then in the ODI series opener against India, West Indies folded in 23.2 overs – their second-shortest completed innings in the format.Shepherd toasted West Indies’ fightback and his own spell in the second ODI.”It’s a big job from me,” Shepherd said after West Indies won by six wickets. “Basically, against a big team like India… it doesn’t matter whatever team they put out on paper, India always have some great batsmen in their line-up. So, to get my best figures against India was a great feeling for me.”The challenge will only get stiffer for West Indies’ attack as the track in Trinidad for the third ODI might not offer as much assistance to the bowlers. Plus, Rohit and Kohli will likely return for India, with the series on the line.”I think our bowling is the side we need to work on a bit more, especially because it’s going to be a batting wicket there in Trinidad, so whoever bowls well is going to get the victory,” Shepherd said. “In Trinidad, the wicket is flat and there is nothing in it for the bowlers and we’re expecting a great game.”In such conditions, West Indies will need Shepherd, the six-hitter, to turn up as well, if they are to surprise India once again.

Tymal Mills takes hat-trick in crushing Southern Brave win

Welsh Fire humbled for 87 in front of home crowd on Jonny Bairstow’s return

Southern Brave romped to a comfortable nine-wicket win over Welsh Fire, the bowlers setting the tone with Tymal Mills taking only the second hat-trick in the Men’s Hundred. That came off the final three balls of the Welsh Fire innings as they fell to 87 all out, the pattern started with returning England star Jonny Bairstow falling early for a four-ball duck.Craig Overton took two early wickets for Brave, including Bairstow, while George Garton took 3 for 8 off 15 balls through the middle of the innings to block any momentum for the home side, Mills finishing with four wickets in all.Stephen Eskinazi’s 38 was the only bright spot in a total easily chased down by Southern Brave. Finn Allen scored a quick 31 before Devon Conway, 35 not out, and Leus du Plooy, 17 not out, saw them through to victory with 41 balls spare.Welsh Fire could not have got off to a much worse start, losing Ashes hero Bairstow cheaply in his first game for them since 2021. He tried to hit Overton over mid-off, but was caught off the mistimed shot without scoring, with Overton getting bounce and movement to also dismiss captain Tom Abell, caught behind by Devon Conway.Joe Clarke also went for a duck, caught Conway off the bowling of Garton, and when Mills dismissed Glenn Phillips with his first ball, giving Conway a third catch, Welsh Fire were in deep trouble at 34 for 4 after 41 balls.David Willey’s cameo of 16 was also ended by Overton, this time with a sliding catch in the deep off the bowling of Garton. While everyone else was losing their wicket, the player keeping his at the other end was opener Stephen Eskinazi who plotted his way to 38 off 34 balls. However, when he was also out skying the ball off Garton, Welsh Fire were running out of options. In the first game between these two sides, Brave had been in even deeper trouble before Chris Jordan played a match-winning innings, but Fire had no equivalent as the lower order slipped away. It fell to Mills to take a hat-trick with the last three balls of the innings as Fire were dismissed for 87 – the lowest total in a completed 100-ball innings – and left needing their bowlers to produce something remarkable to save the game. The player with the best chance of doing that was Pakistan opening bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi and he delivered an effective first set that did everything other than pick up a wicket for Fire. Willey’s first two balls then went for 10 as Brave opener Finn Allen started to find his range before he was caught on the long-on boundary by Willey off the bowling of David Payne for 31.Welsh Fire tried seven bowlers, but there was little pressure on Conway and du Plooy as they knocked off the winning runs with great ease.
