Allen, Phillips cut loose as New Zealand hit back with dominant win

England on receiving end of 74-run hammering to keep series alive going into fourth T20I

Alan Gardner03-Sep-2023New Zealand produced a vastly improved team performance to claim a thumping victory at Edgbaston and maintain interest in the series with one match to play. Finn Allen slammed 83 off 58, Glenn Phillips added a 27-ball half-century and then the bowlers all chipped in as England’s chase fell apart on a wearing surface.Set a target of 203 to secure their third win on the bounce, England fell to 55 for 4 in the ninth over and never really looked like making a contest of it. Jos Buttler struck a few defiant blows before being fifth man out for 40 off 21 and the lower order fell away quickly in the face of a probing New Zealand bowling display, Kyle Jamieson and Ish Sohi sharing six wickets. The margin of 74 runs was among England’s heaviest defeats in T20Is when batting second, and offered a measure of revenge to Tim Southee’s side after going down by 95 runs at Old Trafford in the second T20I, as well as giving New Zealand the chance to claim a share of the series at Trent Bridge on Tuesday.New Zealand adapt, at last
Southee had challenged his side to adapt better to conditions after two sub-par showings, and they were better in all three departments in Birmingham. Allen and Phillips played well-judged innings during an 88-run stand after Southee had opted to put up a score, while the changes made to the bowling attack both bore fruit – Matt Henry, who was Player of the Match in the T20 Blast final on this ground in July, and Jamieson, making only his fourth New Zealand appearance since suffering a back stress injury in 2022, front and centre of a miserly powerplay performance. The spin pair of Sodhi and Mitchell Santner, although presented with a more favourable scenario, produced combined figures of 4 for 53 from seven overs – compared to 1 for 98 from eight overs delivered by Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone (Moeen Ali curiously left unbowled on his home ground). In the field, although Allen couldn’t quite pull off a spectacular relay effort to dismiss Buttler at long-on, Phillips’ flying leap to palm back a Dawid Malan slog-sweep and prevent it going for six epitomised their commitment.Malan’s birthday blues
Such are the blurred lines between white-ball formats in this day and age that every time Malan – who is in England’s 50-over World Cup squad – has batted in this series it has invited scrutiny and comparison with Harry Brook – who isn’t. Malan, it’s worth noting, averages 54.92 in ODIs, but was dropped during the Hundred (officially a T20 competition) after scoring 28 runs in four innings for Trent Rockets; he lost his place, perhaps ironically, to Joe Root, who is in the ODI squad but hasn’t played a T20I since 2019. Keeping up?Whatever the number of balls, sets or overs, the Malan malaise appears to have returned. Having made a typically staunch half-century at Chester-le-Street to anchor a small chase – very much bread-and-butter for England’s No. 3 – he followed up with nought off four balls in the second T20I and an uncomfortable 2 off 11 here. His frustrations were evident as he walked off after hoisting Southee to the one catcher out on the off side, as England reached the six-over mark on 30 for 2 – their third-lowest powerplay score since 2015.Brook’s failure, holing out off the legspin of Sodhi, meant that Malan at least would not have to hear all about his rival’s prodigious abilities for a third time in the series. But nevertheless, this probably wasn’t how Malan would have wanted to celebrate his 36th birthday.Allen provides platform
Allen showed how powerful his hitting can be when taking Luke Wood for three consecutive sixes in the first over the series at the Riverside – but he only managed three singles off the other 12 balls he faced in that game, highlighting how turning over the strike can be more of a struggle for the 24-year-old, now more than two years into his T20 international career. Here, on a dry surface that made timing the ball a challenge, he was occasionally visibly frustrated by his inability to execute shots: on 58 from 42, his groan was audible over the stump mic when mistiming a pull off Gus Atkinson. But he managed to accrue 21 singles and five twos – albeit that encompassed the dismissal Devon Conway run out going for a third – to go with the big shots. It was, he said at the break between innings, part of a conscious effort to bat for as long as possible. “100%, I wanted to take it deep, thought it might not be that easy for the guys coming in,” he said.Nevertheless, he was still keen to flex those boundary-clearing muscles. The first of his six sixes came via a clean strike down the ground off Jordan in the powerplay, and he went to a 35-ball half-century with a hit that just cleared the man, and the rope, at long-on off Livingstone. The piece de resistance, however, was a pointed trident of blows off Rashid, England’s premier legspinner, who was flambéed over long-off, long-on and straight back over his head from consecutive deliveries in the 15th.Phillips turns the screw
The dismissal of Tim Seifert, smartly stumped off a Livingstone legbreak, offered an obvious example of the pitch gripping – Livingstone himself reacted by covering his mouth with his hands – but Phillips was able to bide his time and get accustomed to conditions while Allen did the heavy lifting through the middle of the innings. He was on 27 off 19 at the end of the over in which Allen took on Rashid, before adding a brace of boundaries off Jordan in the next and then striking Wood for six and four as he began to kick up through the gears.Although Allen’s innings came to end, bowled by a Wood cutter, Phillips unleashed another beastly salvo in the following over to keep New Zealand on course for 200. Two into the deep off the first ball of the 18th took him to a 27-ball fifty, before Phillips hammered Livingstone for 6-6-6 off three legitimate deliveries – twice into the crowd at deep midwicket, then over long-off. He was gone in the next over, bowled by Atkinson’s slower-ball yorker for 69 off 34, as the innings threatened to stall at the death – but New Zealand already had plenty.

Young, Chapman hit fifties as NZ take series 2-1

New Zealand put up a complete show as they roared back in style following the loss on Saturday, to win the third T20I by 32 runs and seal the three-match series 2-1.The win was set up by fifties from Will Young, playing his first game of the series, and Mark Chapman, who continued from where he left in the second game, as the visitors racked up 166 for 5 in their 20 overs. Junaid Siddique was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts, picking up 3 for 26.

Siddique handed two demerit points

UAE’s Junaid Siddique was handed two demerit points and fined 25% of his match fees for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct twice. The first incident took place in the fifth over of New Zealand’s innings when Siddique moved close to the dismissed batter, Tim Seifert, and shouted aggressively at him. For this, Siddique was handed an official reprimand and one demerit point.

Then, in the 17th over, Siddique showed dissent by using inappropriate language towards the umpire after an appeal was turned down. For this, he was handed one more demerit point and fined 25% of his match fee.

In reply, UAE’s top half was blown away by some restrictive New Zealand bowling. Basil Hameed and Aayan Afzal Khan added 68 off 57 for the sixth wicket, but it came a bit too late for the hosts as they could only muster 134 for 7.

The coin goes Waseem’s way, again

Muhammad Waseem made it three out of three at the toss and stuck to fielding first as he has all series. The UAE bowlers then backed their captain’s decision by restricting New Zealand to 38 in the powerplay while also removing the openers. Tim Seifert got off the mark with a fierce cut while Chad Bowes also got going with a slash through covers. But Bowes’ joy was short-lived with Muhammad Jawadullah sending him back with a skiddy short-of-a-length ball that he could only top-edge to short third where Zahoor completed the catch on the second attempt.Siddique then removed Seifert, who hacked his pull to the right of Hameed at deep backward square leg, the fielder sprinting low to his right and pulling off a screamer. New Zealand were more proactive in the powerplay but were only going at a run rate of just a tick over six.

Young, Chapman sizzle in the middle overs

While the start followed a similar pattern to the previous game, Young and Chapman ensured they dealt with the middle overs differently this time. Young got off the mark with a finely edged four off his second ball before planting Siddique over the long leg fence. Young did slow down a touch when Seifert fell but three successive fours off Hameed got him going again, and he reached his fifty off 40 balls.Young found an ally in Chapman, with the duo adding 84 off just 60 balls for the third wicket to tilt the scales back in New Zealand’s favour. Chapman was circumspect initially but took 17 runs off a Mohammed Faraazuddin over to get into the flow. The surface seemed to be better for shot-making than the first two games and both batters capitalised on it as New Zealand moved from 55 for 2 after nine overs to 132 for 3 after 16. Chapman reached his fifty off 30 balls with five fours and two sixes as New Zealand looked set for a tall total.Kyle Jamieson is congratulated after picking up a wicket•Emirates Cricket Board

Siddique three halts New Zealand’s charge

Siddique came back in style, having been rested from the second T20I, by picking three key wickets to keep his side in the game. He got rid of Seifert in the powerplay and then removed both Young and Chapman in the space of two overs. Young was foxed by a shortish slower ball that he could only spoon to extra cover while Chapman swished one straight to deep backward square leg.Siddique’s spell halted New Zealand’s momentum at the back end. They could only score 24 runs in the last three overs which included a six off the final ball of the innings from Mitchell Santner.

New Zealand keep mistakes to a minimum

After a maiden over by Tim Southee, Ben Lister was carved away for two successive fours by Waseem. But Lister struck back immediately to catch Waseem’s outside edge. Vriitya Aravind scored a couple of cracking boundaries but he was dismissed by Kyle Jamieson as the hosts reached 40 for 2 after the powerplay. While that was still more than what New Zealand managed in theirs, UAE could not capitalise in the middle overs. Aryansh Sharma was stumped off Santner for 16 before Adithya Ashok claimed his maiden international wicket sending back Asif Khan. Two balls later Ansh Tandon committed a near-impossible run and UAE lost 3 for 9 in 11 balls. At 56 for 5 after 10 overs, the asking rate was always going against UAE. Hameed and Aayan did manage to keep UAE ticking along but the big hits never arrived. There were a few boundaries from time to time but New Zealand bowled with discipline. Lister then picked up two wickets in the 19th over to finish with 3 for 35 as New Zealand sealed a comfortable win.

New target: Man Utd eyeing "superstar in the making" who snubbed City move

Manchester United have now joined the race to sign a “superstar in the making”, who has already snubbed a move to rivals Manchester City, according to a report.

Man Utd eyeing move for attacking midfielder

As we approach Ruben Amorim’s first summer transfer window as Man United boss, it is clear the manager will need to strengthen in a number of key areas, if his side are going to be competitive in the upper echelons of the Premier League table next season.

United are 13th in the standings with just nine games left to play, having arguably been overreliant on Bruno Fernandes to provide goals and assists, with the Portugal international leading the way on both metrics.

As such, the Red Devils may want to bring in another attacking midfielder this summer, and Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha is one of the names on the shortlist, although contact is yet to be made to discuss a potential deal.

Southampton’s Tyler Dibling is also under consideration, with talks being opened over a deal for the 19-year-old, but the Englishman is not the only young attacker Amorim has his eye on.

According to a report from Tuttomercatoweb (via Sport Witness), Man United are now in the race to sign Genk’s Konstantinos Karetsas, who has previously snubbed a move to rivals Man City.

Greece's KonstantinosKaretsascelebrates after the match

Liverpool, Newcastle United and Napoli are also interested in a move for Karetsas, who has started to attract widespread interest from across Europe, courtesy of his performances this season.

The 17-year-old is said to have established himself as one of the best young talents in the world, and the race for his signature is now hotting up.

Karetsas impressing for club and country

Despite his age, the teenager has already managed to establish himself as a key player for Genk, making 25 league appearances this season, during which time he has amassed two goals and two assists.

Having impressed in the Belgian Pro League, the Greek attacking midfielder recently earned a call-up to his national side, where he has continued to perform very well, breaking the record to become the youngest Greece player to score a competitive goal.

Following the starlet’s magnificent performance to help Greece prevail against Scotland, he also received high praise from freelance scout Ben Mattinson, who tipped him for future success.

As such, it is exciting news that Man United are in the race for Karetsas, and they will be hoping the youngster’s previous snub of Man City will give them a better chance of winning the race for his signature.

Better than Marmoush: Man City want to sign "one of the best CFs in Europe"

When will we next see Erling Haaland?

On Monday, it was reported that the Norwegian striker ‘will see a specialist’ after suffering a rather nasty-looking ankle injury during Manchester City’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth in the FA Cup.

As reported by Jamie Jackson of the Guardian, Haaland is expected to be back in time for the Club World Cup, but whether or not he’ll be able to feature again in the Premier League this season remains unclear.

Manchester City seeking to sign world-class striker

Given that the 24-year-old has scored 120 goals in 134 appearances for the Sky Blues, averaging a goal every 94 minutes, you may think signing a new striker would be low down on Man City’s list of priorities. Well, you’d think wrong, it would seem.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

As reported by TEAMtalk, Manchester City are ‘interested’ in signing striker Jonathan David this summer, but face competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle United, who have all ‘expressed interest’.

David is out of contract at current club LOSC Lille, and is widely expected to depart les Dogues as a free agent in the summer.

Lille'sJonathanDavidcelebrates scoring their first goal with Edon Zhegrov

Since joining Lille from Gent for a reported fee of €30m (£25m) five years ago, the Canadian has scored an impressive 107 goals in 225 appearances, winning a Ligue 1 title, while 12 of his goals have come in the Champions League.

So, where would he fit in at Manchester CIty?

How Jonathan David would improve Manchester City

Man City not only already have the goal machine himself Haaland, but they also signed Omar Marmoush for around £60m in January.

The Egyptian proved to be the match-winner by the South Coast on Sunday, his fifth goal in 11 Man City appearances so far, most notably bagging a hat-trick against Newcastle in February.

Nevertheless, if Man City can get their hands on David, they must grasp this opportunity with two hands.

Paul Almeida on Twitter describes David as ‘world-class’, while European football expert Zach Lowy labels him ‘one of the best young strikers in Europe’.

Meanwhile, Joe Callaghan of the Guardian notes that David often saves ‘his best for the biggest stage’, so let’s analyse how he compares to Marmoush this season.

As the table outlines, Marmoush is actually having a better season than David, scoring two more goals to date, but, as noted by Anantaajith Raghuraman and Elias Burke of the Athletic, this is the best form of the Egyptian’s entire career.

Marmoush ranks fifth across Europe’s top-five leagues, as well as second in the Bundesliga, when it comes to goals – xG, which is obviously great, but suggests his form may not be as sustainable as Man City might like.

David, meantime, has been a regular, reliable goal-scorer for many years now, as the table below outlines below he has been more prolific than City’s big January signing.

As outlined, this season is the first time ever that Marmoush has outscored David in a single-season; there’s still time for that to change too of course.

The Egyptian has enjoyed a meteoric rise, plying his trade in the Regionalliga Nord, Germany’s fourth-tier, as recently as 2019/20, as well as the Zweite Bundesliga the year after, the same season David won Ligue 1 with Lille.

David, on the other hand, has produced very consistent goal-scoring numbers ever since he first burst onto the scene at Gent in 2018, so a massive club in Europe is going to sign a top-class centre-forward for free this summer, but will it be Man City?

Big question mark over Hasaranga and Chameera's participation at World Cup

Sri Lanka allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga may be out of the World Cup completely, and may even require surgery, after aggravating his hamstring tear over the past few days. There is a big question mark over Dushmantha Chameera’s participation as well. The fast bowler is recovering from a pectoral injury and is unable to bowl ten overs without discomfort at the moment.Meanwhile, spinner Maheesh Theekshana, who strained his hamstring in the Asia Cup match against Pakistan, is expected to be fit in time for Sri Lanka’s opening game at the World Cup, against South Africa on October 7.The chair of SLC’s medical committee, Arjuna de Silva, told ESPNcricinfo that “medically it seems unlikely that Wanindu will be fit” for much of the World Cup’s duration. “He picked up a grade 2 tear in the LPL, but he re-aggravated it during rehab. It’s now a grade 3 tear. What also complicates the matter is that it is also a T-junction hamstring injury.”Related

ODI World Cup 2023 injury watch

Prior to his injury, Hasaranga had topped both batting and bowling charts in the LPL. He was seen as key to Sri Lanka’s World Cup hopes, and crucial in terms of the balance of the side, but after the latest setback, he is likely to be out for 4-6 weeks minimum. The selectors may still pick him in the hope that he will be available towards the end of the round-robin stage. But medical advice is that such a move will be a significant risk.Chameera has started bowling in the nets, but de Silva said picking him would also be a risk. Chameera had first picked up the injury ahead of the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe, but after recovering from that, he re-injured himself in the LPL in August. He had also missed the T20 World Cup in Australia last year with an ankle injury.Theekshana is currently in rehab. His is also a grade 3 tear, but as it does not involve the T-junction, de Silva is confident he should be fit for the start of the World Cup.Quicks Lahiru Kumara and Dilshan Madushanka, who missed the Asia Cup through injury, are now essentially back to full fitness, de Silva said. Kumara had been contending with a recurring side strain, while Madushanka had torn his oblique muscle.Sri Lanka are yet to name their World Cup squad but are due to depart for India on September 26.

Australia insist T20 losses aren't part of rising trend

The home side fed Hayley Matthews’ off-side strength and paid the price

AAP03-Oct-2023Australia do not have an issue halting the momentum of rival batters, captain Alyssa Healy insists, despite falling victim to a Hayley Matthews masterclass in the second T20I against West Indies.Matthews clubbed 132 from 64 balls on Monday night to help West Indies pull off the biggest chase in women’s T20I history, as the tourists ran down their target of 213 at North Sydney Oval. The loss marked Australia’s third defeat in four T20Is, having previously enjoyed a 12-match winning streak before being shocked twice by England in this year’s Ashes.Related

Hayley Matthews credits leadership role for 'incredible' run of form

Matthews’ knock came after Australia faced similar challenges in that series, with England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt twice hitting a century in the ODIs.Australia bowled too full and wide to Matthews on Monday night, with the West Indies’ captain hitting 11 fours and three sixes between backward point and cover. The hosts also dropped Matthews twice, as the momentum of the match swung away from them.”I wouldn’t say it’s a concern. They’re really good players, right?” Australia’s stand-in captain Healy said.  “It just comes down to execution. If you’re only hitting the stumps like 20 percent tonight, you’re asking for trouble knowing how small [this] ground is.”We said all along that there’s going to be periods where we could potentially lose games of cricket, and that’s happening. It’s a good opportunity for us to learn from what is going wrong and try and fix it for the next one.”Australia identified the need for a Plan B with the ball as a key issue after India star Harmanpreet Kaur knocked them out of the 2017 ODI World Cup.Changes with the ball and a more attacking approach with the bat prompted a six-year era of dominance for Australia that had not been seriously challenged until this year’s drawn Ashes.Healy insisted ‘Plan B’, or the lack of one, was not the issue at North Sydney Oval.”We’ve got all the plans that we could possibly have in our heads and we’ve got the skills to be able to do it out there,” she said. “We’re just not executing when we need to, which we need to fix.”We were too wide. You look at the way [Matthews] swings the bat, she’s batting on leg stump, basically trying to open up the offside. “We probably gave her a little bit too much room in that department.”Australia must win on Thursday night in Brisbane to avoid their first series defeat to West Indies.
