The BCCI is working hard on procuring visas for the Pakistani journalists waiting to travel to India for the World Cup, the ICC said after the PCB expressed its disappointment again over the delay in visa clearance for Pakistani fans and media.Around 60 Pakistani journalists are expected to make the trip for the World Cup. Pakistan had plenty of local support for their World Cup opener against Netherlands in Hyderabad on Friday but no member of their media contingent or fan was present.Karachi-born Mohammad Bashir, who is a US citizen, was seen rooting for Pakistan in the stands.”This (visa) is an obligation of our host (BCCI) and they are working hard on it with our full support. Every effort is being made to get this sorted,” an ICC spokesperson told PTI.Related

With a large number of fans expected to travel across the border, the PCB is hoping the visas will come through before the game between India and Pakistan in Ahmedabad on October 14.”We have been reminding ICC about their obligations and members’ agreement on issuing visas for fans and journalists for the last three years and continue to raise concerns with all relevant authorities,” a PCB spokesperson said. “PCB is disappointed to see that Pakistani journalists and fans are facing uncertainty about obtaining an Indian visa to cover Pakistan’s opening game in the ICC World Cup. We understand the significant role that journalists and passionate fans play in enhancing the spirit and atmosphere of sports events.”Their presence not only adds vibrancy to the stadium but also contributes to the global coverage and appreciation of the game. We hope to see their presence soon.”It is to be noted that a visa application from a Pakistan passport holder needs to be vetted by multiple Indian ministries including home, external affairs and sports as the country is on India’s prior reference category (PRC) list.

Pogba is on the verge of completing a move to AS Monaco, marking his return to competitive football after a lengthy doping ban. BBC Sport recently reported that the French international was in advanced talks over a two-year contract with the Ligue 1 side. Pogba has now landed in Nice and will soon travel to Monaco to complete his medical before signing their contract.

The 31-year-old midfielder, who previously played for Manchester United and Juventus, was provisionally suspended after testing positive during a random check following Juventus’ 2023-24 season opener against Udinese. Initially handed a four-year suspension for the presence of DHEA, a substance that boosts testosterone and appears on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s banned list, Pogba saw his punishment reduced to 18 months following an appeal in October. In its ruling, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) noted that Pogba had inadvertently consumed DHEA and that the substance only enhances performance in females, softening the severity of the case.

reports that the newly-appointed Los Blancos will not stand in the way of the 24-year-old if he wants to leave, and the club's valuation is met. Key players in Rodrygo's camp, most notably his father and agent Eric Goes, are said to be unhappy with the player's current circumstances, as he has been sidelined by the high-profile trio of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham.

A long-time starter under Carlo Ancelotti, Rodrygo seemingly slipped down the pecking order towards the end of last season, as sources close to the club suggested the Brazilian lacked motivation in training. When contacted by Real Madrid said "they have no intention of selling the player, and they expect him to contribute a lot to the team in the future."

Rodrygo joined Real Madrid from Santos in 2019 for a €40m fee. A regular starter since 2021, the player has been forced to operate from the right side of an attacking three, with Mbappe, Vinicius and Rodrygo all favour occupying the left flank. Arsenal are interested in the player to fill the left side of their attack, while a move to PSG has also been floated in the past 24 hours. It is believed Los Blancos value Rodrygo at around £70m (€81m).

What do New Zealand and Pakistan need to do to qualify for the semi-finals?

Four teams can finish on 12 or more points – what are their respective chances looking like?

S Rajesh04-Nov-2023Australia
Two points following the win against England means Australia are well placed to seal the third semi-final spot and finish among the top three. They can confirm both if they beat Afghanistan in Mumbai on Tuesday – that will ensure Afghanistan can only finish on a maximum of 10 points, which will also be the ceiling for both New Zealand and Pakistan.Even if they lose to Afghanistan, they can still finish among the top three if they beat Bangladesh in their last game. For Afghanistan to go past them, they will not only have to win both their matches, but also go past Australia’s net run rate. Currently, the gap there is huge – Australia are sitting pretty on 0.924 compared to Afghanistan’s -0.330.Related

If Australia lose to both Afghanistan and Bangladesh, then it could come down to net run rates. Three teams – Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan – could be fighting for one spot if Afghanistan beat South Africa and if New Zealand and Pakistan win their last matches. If Afghanistan lose, then four teams on 10 points could be fighting for two spots. Even there, Australia’s healthy NRR should make them favourites to qualify. If New Zealand and Pakistan lose their last games, then Australia will qualify with 10 points even if they lose their last two.New Zealand
Four defeats in their last four matches have left New Zealand with much to do to ensure a semi-final spot. Even if they win their last game, they could miss out if Australia beat Bangladesh and Afghanistan win their last two – if all those results happen, four teams will finish with 12 or more points.New Zealand’s best case will be for them to beat Sri Lanka, for Afghanistan to lose their last two, and for England to beat Pakistan. Then 10 points will take them through without NRR coming into play.If both New Zealand and Pakistan win their last games, and if Afghanistan win a match too, it could come down to net run rates among the three teams. Currently New Zealand have a stronger NRR, and even if they beat Sri Lanka by just one run scoring 300, Pakistan will have to beat England by 130 (with the same total) to go past them.Given that rain is forecast through the week in Bengaluru, there is also the possibility of New Zealand’s last game being washed out; if that happens, they will finish with only nine points, and they will have to hope for Pakistan and Afghanistan to lose their remaining matches and stay on eight.Afghanistan are one of the teams that can finish on 12 points•AFP/Getty ImagesAfghanistan
If Afghanistan win their last two matches they will qualify for sure, since they are one of only four teams who can finish on 12 or more points. The problem for them is that their two opponents are Australia and South Africa, among the best teams in the tournament so far. The other problem for them is their NRR of -0.330, which is easily the poorest among the teams they could be jostling with for a place in the semi-finals.Their best chance of qualifying is if both Pakistan and New Zealand lose their last league matches and stay on eight points. Then, even one victory will be enough for them to qualify, without bringing run rates into play.Pakistan
After seemingly being out of the semi-final race, Pakistan have bounced back with wins against Bangladesh and New Zealand, and now have a shot at a top-four finish. For that to happen, though, they still need to depend on other results, even if they beat England in their last game. For example, even with 10 points, Pakistan could finish outside the top four if New Zealand beat Sri Lanka and finish with a better NRR, and if Australia win one of their last two. Afghanistan could play spoilsport too if they win their last two.Pakistan’s best case-scenario is for them to beat England, for Sri Lanka to beat New Zealand, and for Afghanistan to lose their last two matches. Then, they will qualify without NRR coming into play.As mentioned above, if New Zealand beat Sri Lanka even by a small margin, Pakistan will need to win their last game handily to overtake them on NRR. The advantage for Pakistan is that they will play the penultimate game of the league stage, so they will know exactly what they need to do to qualify.Sri Lanka
Netherlands
Both Sri Lanka and Netherlands are in a similar position – their net run rates are poor, and they can get a maximum of eight points. With three teams already on more than eight, their only chance is for the other teams – New Zealand, Pakistan and Afghanistan – to lose all their remaining matches and stay on eight. Then, either or both of these teams can also finish on eight by winning their last two matches, and NRR will decide which team goes through.Given their terrible NRRs though, that is only a mathematical possibility.

Kylian Mbappe withdraws moral harassment complaint against PSG ahead of reunion in Club World Cup semi-final but maintains fight to recover €55m in unpaid wages from French giants

Kylian Mbappe has withdrawn his legal complaint for moral harassment and attempted extortion against Paris Saint-Germain, just days before facing his former club in the Club World Cup semi-final. • WHAT HAPPENED?

Mbappe’s lawyers confirmed on Monday that they have dropped a criminal complaint accusing Paris Saint-Germain of moral harassment and attempted extortion. The complaint, filed in May, related to the French club’s treatment of Mbappe during his contract standoff in 2023, which included being excluded from the squad and training alone.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 26-year-old Real Madrid star is still pressing forward with a separate appeal before France’s industrial tribunal to recover €55 million (£47.6m/$64.4m) in unpaid wages and bonuses from the final months of his Paris Saint-Germain contract, as per L'Equipe. This financial dispute has remained a major source of tension between the player and the club’s hierarchy. Despite the friction that has been occurring since last summer, Mbappe maintains that he holds no ill will toward PSG fans or former teammates.

  • TELL ME MORE…

Mbappe initially filed the harassment complaint after being sent to PSG’s 'loft' group, a practice used to isolate players, during 2023’s pre-season. The treatment triggered personal trauma related to previous career hardships and ultimately led to legal action, as per the report. Interestingly, Mbappe had briefly retired from legal pursuit before reigniting efforts in April to recoup unpaid salary and bonuses.

The France captain will now shift his focus to the Club World Cup semi-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, June 9 — his first match against the French giants since joining Real Madrid. Though the criminal case has been dropped, the legal battle between Mbappe and PSG is far from over.

New Zealand stick to their guns as third defeat loosens grip on semi-finals

In the larger context, New Zealand have had a typical campaign in the World Cup so far. They have made the best use of their resources despite injuries, they have been solid in the matches that they were expected to win, and have won one out of the four that could have gone either way. In two of the three defeats, they ran pretty strong teams close. However, in two of those defeats, New Zealand have omitted to do things you expect them to do every single time. There were free hits and dropped chances against Australia in Dharamsala, and then some more against South Africa in Pune. One of the better readers of conditions, and thus good at deciding what to do at the toss, New Zealand received some criticism for not making South Africa do what they don’t like to do: chase.Battered and bruised with five of their 15 players injured by the end of the night, New Zealand are sticking to their guns in the knowledge that they still control their fate, and have still to play two matches that – on form – they should be expected to win: against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Winning even one of them gives them a fair shout at making the semi-finals.For starters, neither captain Tom Latham at the post-match presentation nor Glenn Phillips at the press conference had any regrets about deciding to put South Africa in. Latham said if he had a chance to live the day over again, he would still have decided to chase.Tom Latham shares a few words before walking out•ICC/Getty Images

“At the end of the day, we chose to do a toss what we thought was best on this pitch with the information that’s been given,” Phillips said. “And that’s what we go by every game. Obviously South Africa are incredibly strong batting first, but we’ve got an incredibly good bowling line-up and there was no reason that we couldn’t have restricted them to a total that could have been a lot easier to chase on there. Playing on at the end, I definitely thought it got better as well. So, I think had things gone slightly differently, we could definitely have come a lot closer than we did today.”We definitely recognised that they were playing the style of cricket that they wanted to play. But obviously, when any team tries to accelerate, you get opportunities. Obviously, Quinton [de Kock] had a little bit of luck today as well, which helps. And sometimes you need that as a batter. And then when that luck goes your way, the runs start to flow, things start to move a little bit, and once momentum starts changing, it’s hard to bring it back. So, a couple of things go to hand today. Maybe it looks slightly different.”The worrying part for New Zealand might be that it has now become more than “just a couple of things” not going to hand. Coming into this match, New Zealand had dropped more catches than any other side, and were bang in the middle of catching efficiency standings. While fielding has a limited impact on the game, and catching efficiency is not the ideal indicator of how well a side is fielding, New Zealand generally have these things covered. In Pune, Trent Boult went on to add two more drops to the list, chances that he would back himself to take most of the time.Related

  • Rassie van der Dussen sets South Africa's tempo with another thankless century

  • What are New Zealand's semi-final chances looking like after three losses?

“At the end of the day a couple of tough chances were dropped, a missed run-out when his back was turned to the bowler’s end,” Phillips said. “You have no idea where Quinton’s actually standing. Obviously, he had a little bit more time than he thought, but at the end of the day, it’s not like we’ve been dropping straightforward chances or creating a lot of blunders in the field. We’ve definitely put a lot of pressure on the opposition in the field, and we’ve saved a lot of runs and obviously sometimes people drop catches and that’s just the way things go.”The injury situation might be alarming, and the losing streak might make things look more alarming than they should be, but you’d rather be in the New Zealand camp than Pakistan’s or Afghanistan’s. “It’s just two wins away, and that hopefully puts us in third or fourth place, potentially even second,” Phillips said. “So, I think if we can just keep sticking to our basics, what we do best on the field, everything will be all right.”We try to remain level-headed throughout everything, not ride the highs too high and the lows too low. So, I think for us, it’s go about our business as we’ve done the whole way through, just keeping things simple, sticking to what we do best. Obviously, England, Australia, South Africa … they all play a very aggressive brand of cricket and we’ve got our own brand and if we stick to it, we know that we’re fighters, we keep coming back time and time again, and when it matters most, we really put the foot down.”

Moeen: 'If we're going out, we're going out with a bang'

England vice-captain says the team has been “overthinking” during this World Cup, instead of playing the “entertaining” brand of cricket they’re known for

Matt Roller25-Oct-20231:40

What’s gone wrong for England?

England have lost their spark and sense of enjoyment at the World Cup, and would rather go out of the tournament “with a bang” than with a whimper. That is the view of their vice-captain, Moeen Ali, who looks set to make his second appearance of the tournament against Sri Lanka in Bangalore on Thursday.Moeen played in England’s nine-wicket defeat to New Zealand in Ahmedabad on the opening night of the tournament but has not featured since. Being dropped has given him perspective on where his team-mates have fallen short, particularly in defeats to Afghanistan and South Africa which mean they probably need to win all five of their remaining group games in order to reach the semi-finals.”Our intent hasn’t been there,” Moeen said. “When you see it from the outside, it’s just like that spark is missing; that thing is missing where they’re enjoying taking bowlers down and enjoying going out to bat. The situations haven’t always been easy but still: I feel like it’s a game of cricket, at the end of the day, and I think we’re probably taking it too seriously in certain ways.Related

“It’s almost having that carefree kind of attitude: who cares? It’s a game of cricket. If you’re going to make mistakes, you might as well make them doing what you’re good at doing. And we’re making mistakes anyway, so do it with a smile on your face… I think we as a group have been overthinking too much.”In both the 2019 World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup, early group-stage defeats left England with no margin for error in their last four games. On both occasions, they rediscovered their attacking batting style after being confronted with the prospect of elimination. “We’ve been in this position before – probably not to this degree – but we know everything is a must-win,” Moeen said.”There’s no point playing the way we’re playing and then [we will] go out and go home and have regrets. I’ve always believed – and I believe still – that if we play how we play and we know we can play, most teams, we’ll beat… let’s at least go out with a bang, if we’re going to go out. And be entertaining. That’s really important, because that’s something we haven’t been at all.”2:33

Moeen: ”Batting deep makes a big difference at the Chinnaswamy’

England made three changes for their most recent game, a 229-run drubbing at the hands of South Africa on Saturday. Seemingly based on data from the IPL, Jos Buttler opted to bowl first on the third-hottest October day Mumbai had seen in a decade and England’s bowlers fried in the heat; South Africa’s 399 for 7 was the highest-ever score England had conceded in an ODI.In selection, at the toss, and in their general approach, Moeen suggested that England have been guilty of overthinking. “For us, it’s just about playing how we play and not worrying too much about what the trend is at the moment,” he said. “A lot of the time, I feel England have set the trend for the last few years, and we’ve probably moved away from that.”Moeen echoed the views of Rob Key, England’s managing director. “This is a unique place to come and play: it’s bloody tricky to work out what the best thing to do is,” Key said. “But what you can do is focus on what you actually do best – and regardless of any decisions that get made, you need your players to be playing at their very best in this competition. And we haven’t had that.”Buttler is yet to fire at the World Cup, with 87 runs in four innings, and has a heavy workload as a keeper-captain. In Mumbai, he found himself running from behind the stumps to pass on advice to his bowlers and then back again while England were hammered at the death. “It’s not always that easy for a keeper to communicate,” Moeen said, adding that players have told him they “miss having me at mid-off”.Among Moeen’s biggest challenges as vice-captain has been giving his inputs on selection and weighing up whether or not he believes he should play. “When Jos asks me what I think for the side and I don’t put myself in, or if I put myself in, that’s the hardest bit,” he said. “You try and do what’s best for the team as much as you can.”That same mantra will underpin Moeen’s approach on Thursday: “I’m going to use all the intent that I have and take it on. That doesn’t mean slogging… it just means being brave and taking a risk if I need to – just being me, really. I’m going to take the situation out [of it] a lot of the time and just enjoy it as much as I can.”

Mbappe's move to Real Madrid on a free transfer last summer riled plenty of PSG fans, leading to abuse of the striker in the stands at the Parc des Princes. Without him, though, Luis Enrique's side ascended to a new level in 2024-25, and won the Champions League for the first time in their history.

During his time in Paris, Mbappe won Ligue 1 six times, and scored 256 goals in 308 games to become the club's record goalscorer. Cisse has now called for the PSG fans to show the 26-year-old more "respect", even if he could never get over the line in Europe.

WHAT CISSE SAID

Former Liverpool and France striker Cisse said on : "We must savour the victory rather than say 'Kylian was not there, we won' and try to taunt him. A Champions League is a long-term task. Marquinhos thanked Thiago Silva… All these people have made Paris grow. Kylian is one of them."

He added: "There are the slightly smarter fans and fans who ignore all this and who will leave Kylian alone. What Kylian did for PSG is big. That has to be respected."
