Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza will miss the second and third T20Is against Ireland after picking up a two-match ban following a code-of-conduct breach in the first match of the series on Thursday.Raza, who was Player of the Match for his all-round display (65, and 3 for 28) in a one-wicket win in Harare, was involved in an altercation with two Ireland players during the 14th over of Zimbabwe’s chase. The incident followed a tight single off the bowling of Josh Little, which involved Raza having to run around the bowler in his follow-through.Raza had a heated exchange with Little and Curtis Campher, “charging towards” the duo – according to a Zimbabwe Cricket press release – while “pointing his bat and breaking away from the umpire who had tried to calm the situation”.Raza received two demerit points for the offence, which took his total to four in the last 24 months, leading to his two-match ban. He was also fined 50% of his match fee. Campher and Little picked up one demerit point each, their first in the last 24 months, and were fined 15% of their match fees.Sean Williams will stand in as Zimbabwe captain for the remaining two matches of the T20I series, on Saturday and Sunday.

'Nico Williams' agent wouldn't have fooled me!' – Barcelona criticised over fumbling of winger's transfer as ex-president who signed Diego Maradona and Rivaldo issues warning to Athletic Club over mega extension

Former Barcelona president Joan Gaspart didn't mince his words while speaking about Nico Williams and his agent after the winger stayed put in Bilbao.

  • Criticises the club over failing to secure Williams' deal

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Joan Gaspart, who served as Barcelona's president from 2000 to 2003, shared his opinions on the club's failure to secure the signing of Nico Williams. The former chief criticised the Catalans for their handling of the deal, while also warning Athletic Club of falling prey to their own success of extending the winger's contract.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After being unable to sign him last summer, Barcelona looked primed to sign Williams this summer, with reports claiming that the player made the first move and initiated contact with the Catalans. Despite news of Barca not returning to the 1:1 financial rule just yet, Williams agreed personal terms over a six-year contract. However, late in June, pessimism surrounding the deal started growing, with Williams' agent Felix Tainta demanding the La Liga champions insert a "free release clause" in his contract in case the club failed to register him. Barca, however, did not cave in to their demands, with the 22-year-old eventually signing a mega 10-year contract with the Basque outfit with a much higher release clause.

  • WHAT JOAN GASPART SAID

Speaking on the '' podcast, Gaspart started off by speaking about the repercussions of Williams' mega extension at Athletic Club next season. "Nico is a great player, but now the problem is Bilbao," he said. "When the players realise they're earning half, half, half of what Nico earns, they're not going to like it. And the fans, if this player doesn't score 50 goals, they're going to boo him, right?"

Then, he proceeded to point fingers at the Barcelona management. "There was no passion, and it's not a criticism of [sporting director] Deco, who is a professional who is at Barcelona today and might be at another team tomorrow that pays him more," Gaspart said. "I wasn't paid for what I did. I did it out of passion. And when you do it with passion, it's very difficult for things to slip away."

He also compared the Joan Laporta's current stint with his own, when he signed some legendary figures when he was vice-president from 1978 to 2000, and then the president for the next three years.

"Barcelona is a club of passion. And passion isn't instilled by a professional, it's carried by the one who has it," he said. "The one who doesn't get paid to be a Barca fan. Don't tell me stories! I've signed [Diego] Maradona, Rivaldo, [Andoni] Zubizarreta, [Jose Mari] Bakero… I've signed them and nothing like that has ever happened to me… That intermediary Nico Williams has wouldn't have fooled me."

Charlie Dean doubtful for England's tour opener against India

England captain Heather Knight says her team will have to adjust quickly to the bounce on offer at the Wankhede Stadium

S Sudarshanan05-Dec-2023Offspinner Charlie Dean could be a significant absence in England’s spin department for the opening women’s T20I against India at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday. She was the most recent player to go down with a stomach bug that had hit the England A camp during the three-T20I series against India A.”Charlie Dean is the latest to go down and can take a little bit of time to recover from that,” Heather Knight, the England captain, said on the eve of the match. “She is the only one that is in potential doubt. We have had a strict quarantine and transition period to come across to the England team [from the A side]. We’ll see how she is [as the series progresses].”Dean, left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone, and legspinner Sarah Glenn are England’s spin options, along with part-time offspinner Alice Capsey. Ecclestone is also coming back from a surgery, after dislocating her right shoulder while warming up for Manchester Originals’ match against Southern Brave in the women’s Hundred. She subsequently withdrew from the Women’s Big Bash League and missed the white-ball home series against Sri Lanka.Related

New Test dawn for India, but focus firmly on road to T20 World Cup

Ecclestone was part of England’s two-week camp in Oman before travelling to India. On the eve of the first T20I, she was seen spot-bowling – with one of England’s assistant coaches observing her – before walking off. Knight said Ecclestone was tracking well.”She is doing really well. She is back bowling,” Knight said. “The bowling won’t be an issue. Probably fielding, a bit nervousness … I have had injuries before, and it is always [about] getting over and trusting your body again. In the heat of the battle, Sophie will be doing that and should be able to get over that. She has been tracking really well in training. She has been fielding, diving and things like that. We’ll keep an eye on her as she is a key player for us.”Knight: Bounces more than you expect at WankhedeHaving had a first look at the conditions at the Wankhede Stadium during training on Monday, Knight said the extra bounce is something batters have to adjust to.”The nets are here on the edge of the square, so it gives you a good indication of how the pitch is going to play,” she said. “The thing with Wankhede is that it bounces more than you expect, which is different from Brabourne Stadium where we played a lot of WPL games, where it skids a little bit more. So it is about getting used to that.”There was a little bit of turn on offer in the nets. But I expect the main wicket to not spin much. The outfield is quick as well.”India’s home series against Australia last December, as well as the inaugural WPL, had huge crowds at the grounds in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Knight, who played for Royal Challengers Bangalore, expected a similar turnout, and said as opposition players the key was to not lose focus.”Sometimes you can feel like things are accelerating and a bit rushed actually, when there is crowd and you feel like the game is happening pretty quickly,” she said. “We have talked a lot about trying to get our own pace with bat and ball, trying to maintain concentration in the moment and try to focus on what we want to do.”Trying to silence the crowd will be tough. Watching the men’s World Cup, you see the support and the passion the Indian fans have for India and having experienced that, it is hard thing to do to silence the crowd. Even if there is not many, they are usually very, very loud.”It’s little things like making sure you can communicate on the pitch around the noise as captain that is a little bit tricky. It’s an amazing challenge and you want to play in front of huge crowds.”

Hridoy, Naeem score tons in rain-hit match, Nasum, Amite shine for East Zone in drawn encounter

Hridoy, Naeem impress in rained out match

Experienced top-order batter Naeem Islam and youngster Towhid Hridoy struck centuries in the rain-interrupted drawn BCL game between Central Zone and North Zone at the Sylhet Academy Ground.Naeem reached his 32nd century in the first innings as Central Zone finished with 281. He struck nine fours and three sixes in his five-hour long knock, and had very little support from the other end. Fast bowler Musfik Hasan took four wickets before North Zone responded with 277. Hridoy, a Bangladesh white-ball regular these days, struck 165 off 166 balls, hitting 13 fours and eight sixes. But with the entire third day and much of the fourth day washed out by rain, the match petered out to a stalemate. Emon, Amite, Nasum shine for East Zone

In Chattogram, the game between South Zone and East Zone also ended in a tame draw.Batting first, East Zone got to 402 with four batters hitting half-centuries. Openers Shykat Ali and Parvez Hossain Emon made 77 and 90 respectively before Shamsur Rahman and No 9 Tanzim Hasan also got fifties. South Zone’s left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam bagged figures of 5 for 114.South Zone replied with 282 runs with Fazle Mahmud top scoring with 81. Bangladesh regular Nasum Ahmed took 5 for 81.In the second innings, East Zone lost their first three wickets without a run on the board in 3.5 overs to Al-Amin Hossain and Mahedi Hasan. Amite Hasan then resurrected their innings, scoring his seventh first-class century to save them. He struck ten fours and a six in his 102. Shamsur made 67 as East Zone declared on 249 for 6, setting South Zone a 370 target on the last day. There was just enough time for Anamul Haque’s 55 off 50 balls as South Zone reached 80 for three in the remaining 16 overs.

Smith in control after Hazlewood and Lyon set up 216-run chase for Australia

Stumps Steven Smith made a positive start to Australia’s chase of 216, but a shorthanded West Indies attack hit back late on day three to breathe life anew into the second Test at the Gabba. Australia reached stumps at 60 for 2 and need a further 156 runs to claim a sweep of the home Test summer. But this unpredictable contest may have more twists and turns with heavy showers forecast on days four and five due to the after-effects of Cyclone Kirrily.New-ball bowlers Kemar Roach and Alzarri Joseph started sluggishly and failed to make the most of favourable conditions under lights. Australia rattled off 24 runs before opener Usman Khawaja tickled Alzarri Joseph down the leg side.West Indies’ hopes of ending a two-decade Test drought against Australia were further raised when Justin Greaves squared up Marnus Labuschagne, whose edge was brilliantly snaffled by Kevin Sinclair in the slips. Sinclair – not for the first time in his debut Test – celebrated by crossing his arms after he rose from the turf.Smith and Cameron Green survived a probing examination before stumps. Green was all at sea and struck on the pads by Greaves, but West Indies were unsuccessful in their review. He then edged the next delivery in front of second slip.In contrast, Smith looked technically sound and hit the ball crisply to finish unbeaten on 33 from 56 balls.Kavem Hodge was brilliantly run out by Travis Head from forward short-leg•AFP/Getty Images

It was a resilient effort from West Indies, who were without quick Shamar Joseph after he was struck on the toe on his right foot by an inswinging yorker from Mitchell Starc. It was initially given out lbw but Starc had overstepped. He had to retire hurt to end a West Indies second innings that fell away. They had moved to 148 for 4, with a lead of 170, when the in-form Kavem Hodge hit to Travis Head at forward short-leg and took a couple of steps forward with the stroke, and Head quickly flicked the ball at the stumps. A desperate Hodge dove back but his bat was in the air when the ball hit the stumps in what might prove a match-turning moment. It followed a trend where West Indies lost wickets almost out of nowhere and were left to rue four of their top six batters scoring between 29 and 41 but not kicking on.No. 3 Kirk McKenzie, who drove well during his stay, top-scored with 41 and along with Alick Athanaze played attractively and threatened substantial scores before they both fell to Nathan Lyon either side of the dinner break.Australia’s attack toiled in oppressive conditions, but managed to conjure breakthroughs at crucial junctures much like they did when challenged against Pakistan earlier in the summer.Nathan Lyon had a big job to do as the quicks suffered in the heat•AFP/Getty Images

With the quicks feeling the effects of the hot and humid weather, Lyon was relied upon and he threatened on a ground he has a terrific record at. Bowling quicker than usual, Lyon produced sharp turn and bounce to finish with 3 for 42 from 22 overs. After a frenetic day two, the match returned to normalcy as the surface settled and West Indies eyed batting long. Resuming at 13 for 1, West Indies needed to survive the new ball onslaught and reached the 25-over mark, after which batting has proven easier, relatively unscathed. But the surface did not offer as much zip as it did late on day two when Australia had declared 22 runs behind and Josh Hazlewood had sent back Tagenarine Chanderpaul.McKenzie motored along to thwart Australia’s pace attack. In contrast, skipper Kraigg Brathwaite was anchored to the crease and scored just six runs off his first 33 balls before whacking Starc uppishly through the covers for his first boundary of the innings. The batters defied probing hard-length bowling from Pat Cummins and notched a half-century stand before Brathwaite chipped Green to cover.Kirk McKenzie played a flurry of check-drives down the ground•Getty Images

McKenzie slowed down and on his 50th delivery, he missed an attempted sweep to be trapped lbw on Lyon’s second delivery. McKenzie decided to review, having been hit high on his back leg, but ball tracking showed it to be clipping the off bail and the decision was upheld.Athanaze, who has had limited impact in the series, showed glimpses of why he is highly rated with several attractive strokes and combined well with Hodge after dinner to rattle Australia.Australia’s frustrations boiled over when Mitchell Marsh made a hash of a fielding attempt leading to Lyon, the bowler, gesticulating in annoyance. But Lyon’s mood soon brightened when he dismissed Athanaze on 35 after tossing up a delivery that was edged to slip, where Smith took a sharp catch. It was a relief for Smith, who had earlier in the innings dropped Athanaze and Brathwaite, as West Indies fell away before their late fightback left the match delicately poised.

Betting adverts removed from Pakistan broadcast of Melbourne Test

State broadcaster PTV suspended coverage of the game due to the superimposed adverts on the outfield

Danyal Rasool27-Dec-2023Pakistan will be provided an advertisement-free feed of the ongoing Test series in Australia. The broadcast pictures provided to the Pakistani market until now had included a gambling sponsor superimposed into the coverage, and had led to the Pakistan state broadcaster, PTV, not broadcasting the first day of the Boxing Day Test. Ten Sports, which also has rights to air the series between Pakistan and Australia, continued to broadcast the game. However, Pakistan’s Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) issued a notification on Tuesday prohibiting “broadcast/distribution of advertisement of surrogate companies which are promoting gambling/betting in different sporting events being telecast/broadcast in the country”.That led to concerns the Test wouldn’t be broadcast in Pakistan at all, though Ten Sports continued to broadcast the game from the start of the second day with a betting sponsor superimposed into the on-field coverage. However, ESPNcricinfo understands the feed provided to Pakistan will no longer include any such advertisements that may breach local laws, which theoretically enables PTV to begin showing live pictures from Melbourne as well, even though at the time of writing, coverage on the state broadcaster has not yet resumed. The clean feed provided to Pakistan is expected to begin imminently.PTV had issued a statement yesterday saying they had pulled coverage adhering to the government’s “zero tolerance policy” for surrogate advertising and “had taken up the issue with the relevant broadcaster”, saying the “series will be telecast live once the matter is resolved”.The first Test was broadcast on both the PTV and all private broadcasters without interruption.
