Introducing the 2025 British & Irish Football Lions: Harry Kane up top but John McGinn as captain of GOAL's all-star selection from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales?

GOAL picks 22 players in its footballing version of one of the most prestigious and iconic teams in rugby

The British & Irish Lions will play the first match of their eagerly-awaited test series against Australia in Brisbane this weekend, which got GOAL thinking about a footballing equivalent.

For any football fans unfamiliar with one of the most famous touring teams in rugby, the Lions are made up of players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and they embark on alternating tours of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa every four years.

So, if such a squad existed in football, who would make the cut? Below, GOAL picks out 22 players – and one coach – that would warrant inclusion in a Lions squad…

Getty Images SportGoalkeepers

We have to be honest here: this is not a vintage era for British and Irish goalkeepers.

However, Jordan Pickford has rarely let either England or Everton down, so he's the leading candidate for the No.1 jersey. And who better than Caoimhin Kelleher, "the best No.2 in the world", to serve as his understudy?

The Irishman could even end up putting some serious pressure on Pickford, given only now is he set to get regular game time in the Premier League with Brentford after doing an outstanding job every single time he deputised for Alisson Becker at Liverpool.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportFull-backs

One of the strongest areas of the squad. England alone have a plethora of options at right-back but Trent Alexander-Arnold offers more than any of his rivals in terms of versatility, creativity and set-piece prowess, so Real Madrid's new signing gets the nod ahead of the likes of Reece James. However, there's also room in the squad for Liverpool's Conor Bradley, the 22-year-old Northern Irishman who emerged as an excellent alternative to Alexander-Arnold at Anfield last season.

As for the opposite flank, Myles Lewis-Skelly undeniably remains a raw talent but he's also one of the most exciting young left-backs in the Premier League right now. The Arsenal teenager would also benefit enormously from working alongside Scotland skipper Andy Robertson. The Liverpool legend may be showing signs of wear and tear but his experience, tenacity and positivity would prove invaluable to the touring party, making him a serious contender to start.

Getty Images SportCentre-backs

Just like the goalkeeping department, the centre-back cupboard is pretty bare. Still, Chelsea's Levi Colwill has serious potential and while England manager Thomas Tuchel doesn't appear to have much faith in Crystal Palace's much-coveted Marc Guehi, we were hugely impressed with his performances at Euro 2024.

Elsewhere, Nathan Collins is the most aerially dominant defender in the Premier League, winning more headers than any other player last season – while at the same time racking up more minutes than any other outfield player – which is testament to both his durability and his importance to Brentford.

We've also called upon the services of another Irishman in Jake O'Brien. Just as Colwill could provide additional cover at left-back, the Everton man could fill in at right-back if required.

Declan Rice is an obvious pick. As well as being one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, he'd also be the most well-known player within the squad, given the England international used to be Irish.

Ridiculously talented trio Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden are also shoo-ins, even if it's been made abundantly clear over the past year or so that it's impossible to fit them all into the same 11.

Consequently, there could easily be a spot in the starting line-up for either Scott McTominay or John McGinn.

The former was voted Serie A's MVP last season after revelling in a more advanced role under Antonio Conte at Napoli and he's capable of playing as an attacking midfielder or on the left-hand side of a three.

Meanwhile, fellow Scot McGinn is coming off the most prolific campaign of his Aston Villa career and his ferocious fighting spirit would make him an ideal Lions captain.

Bairstow unsure if he will retain his role as England's wicketkeeper in India

With Ben Foakes recalled into the squad, Bairstow is not guaranteed to start with the gloves in India

Jonny Bairstow is yet to learn whether he will retain his role as England’s wicketkeeper in their five-Test series in India, with Ben Foakes recalled to the 16-man squad that will fly to the UAE next week ahead of the first Test in Hyderabad on January 25.Bairstow kept wicket in all six Tests that England played in the 2023 home summer – one against Ireland, five against Australia – but is not guaranteed to start with the gloves in India. He started the Ashes with an error-strewn performance at Edgbaston but improved as the summer wore on, finishing the series with 23 catches and a stumping.Rob Key, England’s managing director, said when announcing England’s squad that Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum would make a decision based on “balance of the side… all kinds of contributing factors” and highlighted the differences between keeping wicket in England and India.Related

“I’ve not spoken to anyone about that,” Bairstow said in an interview with . “As long as I’m over there, as long as I’m fit and firing, the selection decisions will be taken out of my hands. But look, I’m fairly happy with where I’m at, whether I’m keeping, batting or whatever it is.”Foakes kept wicket in three of England’s four Tests in their most recent series in India, in early 2021, and was first-choice wicketkeeper for the first year of the Stokes and McCullum regime before losing his place last summer. He was recalled last month for the India tour and will fly to Abu Dhabi next week for a training camp along with the rest of the squad. After England’s exit from the World Cup, Key implored Bairstow to “get himself into a position where he can go and take on an Indian Test”. He said he found the past six weeks “really valuable” in continuing to recover from the freak injury that ruled him out last winter.”I’ve been getting my ankle right, just training in the gym pretty hard, catching up with friends and family,” Bairstow said. “Having come back from the injury that I had, it was a pretty full-on summer… it’s been great to just have a bit of a refresh, have a bit of time with the family and just to make sure the ankle is as good as it can be.”Bairstow made three ducks in four innings on England’s 2021 tour to India, playing the final two Tests of the series on spinning pitches in Ahmedabad. He warned India that preparing similar surfaces might neutralise their seam attack, and said that England’s task will be to adapt to whatever conditions they are faced with.”India can produce different pitches: it doesn’t have to turn,” he said. “We’ve seen how potent their seam attack has been recently. Look, I’m sure the pitches will turn: it’s whether or not they’ll turn from day one, which potentially negates a bit of their strength in their seam attack. We know how strong they are.”There’s been a lot of talk around Bazball and the probably majority of it has been from you guys [the media]. Look, it’s a positive way of playing cricket. It’s a way in which we’re trying to entertain people that are watching. In India, we know the conditions are going to be slightly different… it’ll be a case of, can we adapt quick enough and well enough to the conditions, and play suitably?”

Pakistan's cricketers set to train with army in March-April

PCB chairman wants the national cricketers to improve their fitness levels and training standards

Pakistan’s cricketers are set to team up with another iconic institution of the country, the Pakistan Army, from March 25 to April 8 in a ten-day training camp. The announcement was made by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Tuesday at a hotel in Islamabad while addressing several players. The camp will start roughly one week after the PSL ends, and Naqvi hopes it will help players get their fitness “up to speed.””When I was watching the matches in Lahore, I don’t think a single one of you hit a six that went into the stands,” Naqvi said. “Whenever a six like that was hit, I used to think a foreign player must have hit that. I have asked the board to make a plan that gets every player’s fitness up to speed. You’ll have to make a proper effort for that.”We have New Zealand coming up, then Ireland, England and the T20 World Cup. I wondered, ‘When will we train?’ but there was no time. However, we’ve found a window, where we’ve organised a camp in Kakul (military academy) from March 25 to April 8. The Pakistan Army will be involved in your training, and hopefully, they’ll help you out.”An intensive training camp in one of the few windows the players would otherwise have rested is likely to be unpopular, especially as it is preceded by six months of virtually non-stop cricket, and followed by several bilateral series leading up to the T20 World Cup.Moreover, the camp coincides with the second half of the holy month of Ramzan, a time when most Pakistanis culturally tend to prioritise family or religious activities over work. The effectiveness of the camp is likelier made tricky by the fact most of the squad players will be fasting, with no food or water from sunrise to sunset unconducive to a rigorous boot camp. There is, though, precedent for Pakistan cricket getting the military involved with training. Misbah-ul-Haq’s Pakistan famously organised a training camp with the military at Kakul academy before a Test series to England. When Misbah scored a hundred in the first Test, he celebrated by doing ten push-ups, followed by a military salute. The series was drawn 2-2, with Pakistan rising to the top of the Test rankings for the only time in their history.’Make Pakistan your first priority’Naqvi also took aim at one of the thornier issues the board is grappling with, telling the players they needed to prioritise national commitments over the lure of T20 leagues. The matter was thrown into the spotlight when Haris Rauf declined to be part of Pakistan’s tour of Australia. Chief selector Wahab Riaz had publicly criticised Rauf, and two months later, the PCB terminated his central contract. To illustrate the point, Naqvi invoked his own time as caretaker chief minister of Punjab, a role he held for over a year, and briefly alongside the PCB chairmanship. He said it was a sacrifice he made because of a desire to serve Pakistan.”I’m not going to say you mustn’t earn money, or ask you to make sacrifices we are also not ready to make. But let me give you one example. One year ago, I was asked to become the chief minister of Punjab, and it caused me a financial loss in my business. I had to leave that aside and incur several extra costs. But I had a desire to represent Pakistan, and so I had to make that sacrifice.”I will support you 100%, but I’ll just ask you to make Pakistan your first priority, and T20 leagues your second priority. It’s unfortunate when money becomes first priority and the country second. If you do that, then we might have a problem. We can even look at central contracts and bolster them further if you desire, but you must be available for Pakistan first and foremost.”Pakistan are currently without a coaching set-up at the national level, and Naqvi briefly mentioned the PCB was in touch with potential options, saying no expense would be spared.”We’ll try to make the best available for you,” Naqvi said. “I have told the PCB our job is not to save money or keep it hoarded away, but to spend it on cricket, from grassroots right through to the national team. The money will be spent on your fitness, training and coaches rather than keeping it locked away.”

Sears called up for O'Rourke, Conway to miss start of IPL due to thumb surgery

Gary Stead said there was no consideration given to recalling the retired Neil Wagner for the second Test

Southee: Green’s ‘blinder’ the difference

Ben Sears is in line to make his Test debut against Australia in the second Test in Christchurch after Will O’Rourke was ruled out due to a hamstring injury, while Devon Conway is set to miss at least the first half of the IPL after undergoing surgery on his fractured left thumb.New Zealand coach Gary Stead confirmed on Monday that O’Rourke’s hamstring is set to sideline him for two to four weeks with Sears being the like-for-like replacement. Stead said there was no consideration given to recalling the retired Neil Wagner after the team gave him a send-off in Wellington following the 172-run loss to Australia.Meanwhile, Stead also confirmed Conway had a small fracture in the joint of his left thumb, which he injured during the second T20I against Australia, and would undergo surgery that would rule him out for eight weeks. That would mean he is unlikely to be available for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL until May but he should be fit for the T20 World Cup in June.Related

Stead said it was disappointing to lose O’Rourke having been impressed by his performance in Wellington before he limped off with the hamstring injury in the second innings.”He hasn’t had sort of hamstring injury in the past,” Stead said. “Disappointing for Will and disappointing for us because I thought he bowled fantastically well and for a guy that’s so young in his Test career it looks like the Australians were certainly respecting him in the way that they’re playing him. I thought his spell before he got injured was absolutely outstanding.”He’ll be a big loss for us. Ben Sears for us as the closest I guess like for like replacement that we thought we could find. We wanted someone with some genuine pace. Ben’s done that he’s had recent international success against Australia as well which was part of the decision-making and in going with him as the replacement for Will.”Ben Sears has caught the eye in red-ball cricket•Getty ImagesSears, who has taken 58 first-class wickets at 27.03, bowled superbly in the two T20Is against Australia just before the Test series. He knocked over Travis Head in the second match in Auckland and took three wickets in his two appearances, troubling Australia’s batters with good pace and bounce. He trained with New Zealand on Wednesday during their nets session at St Mark’s school in Wellington ahead of the first Test. He was bowling alongside Wagner and clean bowled Daryl Mitchell with a beauty.Captain Tim Southee was asked at the end of the Wellington Test whether there was a possibility of recalling Wagner out of retirement and did not rule it out emphatically. But Stead said it did not ever reach a stage where they asked Wagner about it.”We didn’t get there with it,” Stead said. “He had made his decision he was comfortable with it. We reconsidered a number of things but we thought in this case that the pace of Ben Sears and what he’s bought to to us and international cricket so far is the difference that we needed.”Neil had a fitting send-off last night with the team. They celebrated everything he’s done, and Neil was happy with the decision of where he’s got to around that as well.”Stead defended the performance of Scott Kuggeleijn, just as Southee had on Sunday, after the seamer took just two wickets for the match and fell for a duck in the first innings playing a very loose shot at a critical time in the match. But the coach admitted they had once again misread the pitch at the Basin Reserve after leaving out Mitchell Santner in order to play four seamers, just as they had in their previous Test in Hamilton, and did note that it was a cause for concern.”Yes, it is. Yeah, definitely,” Stead said. “If we knew it was going to spin, not so much the spin but more the bounce, then Santner would have played. So yeah, we got that wrong. Put our hand up around that as well. It’s not what we expected, not what we’ve seen from the Basin Reserve in the past either.”Stead was asked about his relationship with Southee after some of the decision-making that has been made in recent weeks both in selection and in terms of tactics on the field. Southee’s decision not to bowl Glenn Phillips at all in the first innings when Australia’s last pair of Cameron Green and Josh Hazlewood shared a 116-run stand has come in for criticism but Stead said the relationship was healthy.”[It’s] good. I’ve got a lot of respect for Tim,” Stead said. “We don’t agree on all the decisions that are made but that’s healthy as well.”There’s different ways of looking at that. It’s easy in hindsight to look back and say, oh, you didn’t get a wicket for a session, so something must be wrong. Equally, when we do take a lot of wickets you should say the same thing, geez, the bowling plans were very good. So that’s the game of cricket. It can change so quickly. I thought at times in the second innings Tim was excellent. His changes were spot on. So there’s always things to discuss between a coach and a captain and we always do that.”

Rahulwatch – LSG want to ease their captain back

Lucknow Super Giants will take a late call on KL Rahul’s participation – whether in part or more – in Tuesday’s away fixture against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Rahul played as an impact substitute in Saturday’s home game against Punjab Kings, with the LSG management keen on “easing him back” from injury.IPL 2024 is Rahul’s comeback tournament after a quadricep injury ruled him out of the last four Tests of the five-match series at home against England earlier this year. Rahul had pulled up with the same injury – against RCB, incidentally – during IPL 2023, and had to undergo surgery followed by lengthy rehabilitation.”We’ll see how he goes at training,” stand-in captain Nicholas Pooran said when asked about Rahul’s availability on Tuesday.Related

At training, Rahul did not keep wicket for most of the session. He first underwent a series of timed sprint and mobility drills that were monitored by head coach Justin Langer. Rahul then practiced the full range of his body movements while playing the sweep in particular and felt his left hamstring repeatedly. He then occupied a quiet corner of the field and kept a close eye on the session for more than an hour. Later, he examined at length the slightly unusual M Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch that had more than a smattering of grass right through the 22 yards.Rahul also padded up and went out for a hit against the team’s net bowlers and throwdown specialists. After a 15-minute session, he got back to finishing a few more rounds of mobility drills before walking off to have another long chat with Langer. Only towards the very end of the day did he have a short go with the gloves.”It’s always tough when you have to change combinations,” Pooran said when asked how Rahul’s absence on the field had impacted the team so far. “Obviously, it’s different with KL on the field. But our senior players came together and assisted me in making decisions as well. It’s something that happens. Sometimes when your captain isn’t available, all the senior players stand up, and try and make up for his absence.”KL Rahul scored 58 in 44 balls in LSG’s season-opener against Rajasthan Royals•BCCI

LSG have one win and one loss in two games so far, with Rahul returning scores of 58 (in 44 balls, vs Rajasthan Royals) and 15 (in nine balls, vs Punjab Kings). He kept wicket only in the first game, before handing over the responsibility to Quinton de Kock for the second.Rahul is among the contenders for the wicketkeeper-batter’s slot in India’s T20 World Cup squad.Leading into the IPL 2024 season, there had been debate among observers whether he would bat in the middle order to play a similar role he plays for with the national team. So far, Rahul has opened in both matches.”I am not going lose one second’s sleep over KL Rahul,” Langer had said on his regular captain last week. “He is a beautiful player, he’s an outstanding player. There’s a reason he’s had so much success for India and I’m blessed to have him in our team, not only as an opening batsman or a batsman and wicketkeeper, but also as the captain. He is so calm. He’s a wonderful person.”

  • WHAT LIVERPOOL ACADEMY DIRECTOR SAID

LFC Academy director Alex Inglethorpe told Liverpoolfc.com: "Simon is a highly regarded young coach and I'm delighted he's agreed to take a key role within the Academy as lead for the U18s group. It is a crucial phase in development for young players towards a professional career and I believe Simon's experience made him an outstanding candidate for the role.

"He has worked across the age groups at Fleetwood and Blackpool, with plenty of experience of senior football at Salford as well – most recently working in a Category One academy at Manchester United. That skillset is ideal for us as we look to allow our players to reach their full potential and hopefully transition towards the upper levels of the game.

"Simon will work closely with our new U21s head coach Rob Page, while Anthony Ryan will continue as his assistant coach following his recent move from the U15s. All of us at the Academy are excited about working with Simon and look forward to helping him develop players capable of bridging the gap to elite first-team football."
