  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to a report from SPORT, Barcelona are set to offer a new contract to Raphinha, but with a considerably lower than expected release clause. The Brazil international has been among the best players in the world this season, becoming a crucial part of head coach Hansi Flick's plans. However, his new release clause could spark rumours of a premature departure in the future.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Contract negotiations between Barcelona and Raphinha remain in the early stages, but key differences are already emerging. The club is offering a one-plus-one extension, wary of past long-term deals that strained finances. The ex-Leeds winger is, however, pushing for two guaranteed years. Salary is another sticking point, with the Brazilian's camp pressing for improved terms. Despite the gap, talks have begun with hopes of avoiding future complications. One area of consensus appears to be the release clause, which would be set at around €80 million (£68m/$90m) – a figure both parties consider fair, should a mutual split be desired down the line.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Earlier this week, another report from the same publication broke the news that Saudi heavyweights Al-Hilal were preparing a blockbuster €100m (£85m/$113m) summer move for Raphinha. The SPL side are ready to offer a four-year deal worth €200m for the player whose contract expires in June 2027.

Having scored 30 goals and recorded 23 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions this term, Raphinha will be looking to add to his impressive numbers in the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid on Saturday, April 26.

Arsenal want £113k-per-week Barcelona ace immediately, prepared to make bid

Arsenal chiefs want to tempt a player away from Barcelona “now” after finding out he could leave the Camp Nou in January, with the north Londoners also willing to put a winter offer on the table.

Arsenal monitoring January market for transfer opportunities

Mikel Arteta and co are attentive to potential opportunities on the market this month, even if the Spaniard has admitted that his priority is to get the very best out of his current options at N5.

Over the last week, Arsenal have dropped points away to Brighton in the Premier League and lost the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Newcastle in a 2-0 defeat on Tuesday, with the Gunners failing to convert chances and proving wasteful in front of goal.

There are reports that Arsenal are keen on signing a new forward in January, to cope without the injured Bukayo Saka, and it is believed that PSG attacker Lee Kang-in could become a target for Arteta if the Ligue 1 champions are prepared to green-light a loan with the option to buy him outright (The Athletic).

Arteta, speaking to the press recently, confirmed that a new arrival is indeed possible for Arsenal before deadline day on February 3 – but it would have to be the perfect deal for interim sporting director Jason Ayto to consider heading to the table.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetacelebrates after the match

“That hasn’t changed,” said Arteta when asked about potential January signings. “Again the focus is our players. Whatever is in the market, we’re very alert, but the priority is working with the players that we have at the moment and tomorrow night, which is a big night for us. It’s not a yes, it’s not a no.”

As well as Kang-in, Arteta personally wants Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams at Arsenal before the end of this window, but a move for the Spain winger could be complicated by the mid-season finances involved (David Ornstein).

Arsenal prepared to bid for Barcelona defender Araujo

While a new defender wasn’t thought to be high on Arsenal’s priority list for January, a report by Spanish journalist Roger Torello this week claims that they’re very keen on £113,000-per-week Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo.

The Uruguayan, who has spent the vast majority of this season sidelined with a hamstring injury, recently returned to the fold and appeared on Hansi Flick’s bench for their last two La Liga matches.

Barcelona defenderRonald Araujo.

However, reports claim that he could leave this month if the right opportunity arises, and this has alerted Emirates Stadium transfer chiefs. Indeed, it is believed that Arsenal want to take Araujo from Barcelona “now”, and they’re prepared to make a bid for the South American alongside Serie A heavyweights Juventus.

It is worth noting that his future apparently “hangs by a thread”, according to this report. Araujo’s deal expires in 2026, and there is no sign of a renewal as things stand. Taking this into account, he could even be a low-cost option for Arsenal.

Arsenal plotting "box-office deal" for £66 million forward in January

Arsenal chiefs are reportedly considering a potential January agreement for a big-name forward, with Mikel Arteta’s side appearing in need of fresh attacking options as they bid to keep chase with Premier League title favourites Liverpool.

Arsenal beat Ipswich Town with Bukayo Saka set for two-month absence

Kai Havertz’s goal handed Arsenal a crucial three points against relegation-threatened Ipswich Town at the Emirates Stadium, but unfortunately for Arteta, some bad news on Bukayo Saka lingered in the background.

Arteta confirmed on Friday that Saka will now be out for more than two months after undergoing surgery on his hamstring, which comes as a seismic blow for Arsenal, who must now cope without their superstar player.

“He has had a procedure and everything went well, but unfortunately he will be out for many, many weeks,” said Arteta on Saka’s condition.

“It will be more than two months. I don’t know exactly how much longer. It will depend on how the scar tissue starts to heal, the first week or so, and the mobility of that. It is very difficult to say.

“The replacement of Bukayo is going to be the team. There were moments where it flowed well tonight and moments where you could see there is still work to do. But I am certain that we are going to do that. We have to rely on the team and not the individual.”

Of course, following this development, reports of Arsenal potentially signing a Saka alternative in January will only intensify.

Barcelona star Dani Olmo is of interest to Arsenal heading into next month, and it is believed that they’re in “positive contacts” with the Spaniard’s representatives (Sacha Tavolieri).

Interestingly, The Athletic has reported that Arsenal are also open to signing a new striker in January, but they also acknowledge that any noteworthy name will come at a premium.

Arsenal are admirers of Wolves striker Matheus Cunha heading into the winter window, though Vitor Pereira’s star isn’t their only target.

Arsenal consider marquee January move for Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen

According to Football Insider and journalist Pete O’Rourke, Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen is still in Arsenal’s thinking for the start of 2025.

The Nigeria marksman is currently on a season-long loan from Napoli, but there is a rumoured break clause in Osimhen’s contract which would allow certain interested clubs, including Arsenal, to strike a move for him next month.

This would be dependent on the Gunners matching his Napoli release clause of around £66 million – something they’re apparently considering.

Indeed, O’Rourke writes that Arsenal are plotting a “box-office deal” for Osimhen in January, but a host of big sides will also be contemplating the same thing and could have to “break the bank” for his signature.

The 25-year-old, as many predicted, has continued to impress in the Süper Lig after leaving Napoli on a temporary deal in the summer – with an anonymous Nigerian journalist telling Foot Boom that Osimhen is among the world’s “elite” strikers.

“No matter what critiques one might have of Osimhen, you cannot question his tireless energy and commitment,” said the reporter.

“This singular quality sets him apart in the modern game, placing him among the elite strikers. He remains your asset even in goal droughts.”

Sophie Ecclestone shows the way for youthful England in 3-0 series sweep

South Africa over-powered in final match of multi-format series as Capsey, Kemp impress

Valkerie Baynes25-Jul-2022A half-century to Tazmin Brits was no match for a stellar effort with bat and ball from Sophie Ecclestone and another successful youth policy roll-out as England won the final T20I of South Africa’s tour by 38 runs in Derby.England handed an international debut to 17-year-old left-arm seamer Freya Kemp, and she took her maiden wicket when she had South Africa opener Anneke Bosch stumped by Amy Jones for 17. She followed that with the wicket of Brits, caught by Ecclestone for 59 as South Africa fell short in their attempt to overhaul a lofty target of 177.Ecclestone, an old hand for England at the age of just 23, then took two wickets, that of the dangerous Laura Wolvaardt, and then Chloe Tryon with the last ball of the match. But it was her 12-ball 33 not out that pushed England to 176 for 6 after an exciting 25 off just 17, including four fours in a row by Alice Capsey, another 17-year-old playing just her second international match. The victory allowed England to finish off the multi-format series 14-2, South Africa’s only points coming from the drawn Test in June.Cap that!Allrounder Capsey didn’t have a chance to bat on her international debut as England cruised to a six-wicket victory in the second T20I in Worcester, although she did take a wicket with her second ball when she had Lara Goodall caught by Nat Sciver to break a century opening stand. That changed on this occasion, however, following the early loss of Sophia Dunkley, who cut left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba straight to Wolvaardt at point on the first ball of the match. That brought Capsey to the crease in the No. 3 spot vacated by Bryony Smith when Kemp and right-arm quick Issy Wong came into the side, with Freya Davies also making way.Capsey struck the fifth ball she faced – from Masabata Klaas – through long-on for four and she unfurled three more in succession, clearing backward point, piercing the covers and lifting one over backward square. Capsey then turned Ayabonga Khaka to the rope through fine leg to move to 21 off 10 balls and after three overs England were 34 for 1. Mlaba returned to the attack with immediate effect, however, removing Capsey with her seventh delivery, caught by Tryon at mid-off.Alice Capsey produced a sparky maiden innings at No.3•Getty ImagesMlaba makes things happenMlaba, in the side after frontline quick Shabnim Ismail succumbed to a back problem, could have had another but Sciver, on four at the time, overturned her lbw dismissal with replays showing the ball sliding narrowly down the leg side. At the end of the powerplay, England were 53 for 2 and Danni Wyatt bumped that up with a six down the ground off Delmi Tucker, which Anneke Bosch did well to almost reach running round from long-on but failed to get a hand on as it dropped over the rope. But when Mlaba returned in the 11th over, there was no mistaking her dismissal of Sciver, bowled by one that deceived her through the air and clattered into the base of the stumps. When Tryon bowled Wyatt for 30 with another full delivery next ball, England were 86 for 4 and South Africa were regaining a measure of control.Ecclestone cuts looseEngland steadied through Amy Jones’ 28 off 18 balls but after she holed out to Brits at deep square leg off Klaas in the 18th over, Ecclestone picked a four off Khaka through wide long-on in the next as a precursor to what was to come.Ecclestone proceeded to smash 26 off the final over of the innings, bowled by Klaas, beginning with back-to-back fours before sending the fourth ball over the rope at deep midwicket. She then punched the next ball through the covers for four before sending the last ball a long way over the fence beyond the rope at deep backward square.Nonkululenko Mlaba struck twice in her first seven balls•Getty ImagesCommonwealth Games ahoyWith women’s cricket set to make a Commonwealth Games debut later this week, both sides will have been looking for takeaways to Birmingham. For England in this series it’s no doubt been getting an encouraging look at their newcomers. Then there was Katherine Brunt, taking a career-best 4 for 15 at the age of 37 in the opening match at Chelmsford to prove she’s well and truly up for the tournament and Ecclestone showing off her ever-present class.England’s experimentation in the batting order has paid off, particularly in the absence of captain Heather Knight, missing with a hip injury for the last two games. Their depth was impressive too on Monday night, not least from Ecclestone at the death. For South Africa it has been a different story after struggling to get going since the Test, then losing Lizelle Lee to a shock retirement, then Kapp and most recently Ismail, who went wicketless in the first two games. Tryon, standing in for unwell captain Sune Luus, successfully mixed up her bowling to have England in trouble early.Brits – who only joined the squad with Kapp’s departure and earned a call-up to the team when Luus fell ill – was excellent in scoring at better than a run-a-ball. But South Africa still look to be a long way short of where their semi-final appearance at the ODI World Cup suggested they might be by now.

Newcastle eye January move for once-£60m striker who is now worth way less

Newcastle United are now eyeing a move for an “outstanding” Premier League striker, who could be available this January, according to a report.

Newcastle set to target new striker after Wilson woes

Just a few weeks ago, it was reported that Arsenal and Chelsea are ready to battle it out over Newcastle forward Alexander Isak, who would fetch a minimum of £115m, meaning Newcastle may need to monitor potential long-term replacements. Corinthians striker Yuri Alberto has emerged as an option for the Magpies, with a £17m January move potentially on the cards as the Brazilian continues to consider his future.

Corinthians attacker Yuri Alberto.

Callum Wilson’s recent injury setback leaves Eddie Howe extremely light in the striker department, but the manager has made it clear that new arrivals are contingent on departures in the January transfer window, saying: “I keep saying the same thing about January, I wouldn’t expect us to be in a position to be too active in the market.

“As we currently stand up, things can change. You know, if we trade players, of course that’s different, but if we don’t trade players, I would expect us to be quiet.”

Newcastle targeting soon to be out of contract star

In light of the financial restrictions at St. James’ Park, the Magpies may look at low-cost signings this winter, and a new report from Football Insider has confirmed they are monitoring Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s situation at Everton.

Calvert-Lewin is out of contract at the end of the season, meaning he will be available to sign on a free transfer. However, the Toffees could be willing to accept an offer this January, as it will be their last opportunity to cash-in after missing out on their £60m price tag placed on his head this past summer.

Should Newcastle pursue a deal for the Englishman, they may have to fend off interest from a number of other interested parties, with AS Monaco, AC Milan and Arsenal also monitoring his situation.

Man City want him: £100m Newcastle sale would be a bigger blow than Isak

Newcastle face a fight to keep one of their prized players from Premier League rivals’ clutches.

ByAngus Sinclair Dec 13, 2024

The Everton forward has proven himself over a number of years in the Premier League, scoring 56 goals in 228 top flight games, with his most prolific season coming back in 2020-21, when he struck 16 times in 33 games.

At the back end of last season, the former Sheffield United man received praise from manager Sean Dyche after his performance in Everton’s 2-0 victory over Liverpool, saying: “I thought he was excellent.

“He’s had a bit of illness. We’re hopeful that has passed, he had it before the game, so I must commend him on that. His physical performance was outstanding, He’s not quite over it but we hope it settles down a bit.”

However, the Sheffield-born striker has generally been less impressive in front of goal over the past few seasons, struggling to find the back of the net this season particularly, which casts doubt on whether he is a worthwhile signing for the Magpies.

If Isak and Wilson are available, it is difficult to see where Calvert-Lewin fits into the team, and signing a new winger is said to be a priority for Howe this winter.

Lachlan Henderson named new Cricket Australia chairman

All state and territory chairs expressed their support for the appointment. Henderson is the current chief executive of Epworth HealthCare having worked in the healthcare industry for 30 years, but he has an extensive background in cricket and cricket administration.Henderson takes charge of the CA board at a tricky time. He has become the fourth chairman in four years after the resignations of both David Peever in 2018 and Earl Eddings last year. He takes over following Freudenstein’s brief stint as interim chairman during which time both Australia’s Test captain Tim Paine and coach Justin Langer resigned, with Cricket Australia playing a role in both resignations.Henderson grew up in Western Australia and played state junior cricket for WA as well as first grade in Perth for University Cricket Club. He was chairman of the WACA for two years in 2015-16, having been on the WACA board since 2013, before moving to Melbourne to take up his post with Epworth. He has been an independent director at CA since 2018.”It is a privilege and honour to be elected chair and serve our national sport,” Henderson said.”I’m really excited by the opportunities ahead. “My love of cricket began as a kid growing up in Perth and the game has always been a big part of my life, as a player, through my involvement with WA Cricket, the board of Cricket Australia and now as the elected chair.”I’m looking forward to working closely with our states and territory cricket chairs and associations, the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA), our players and our partners, on how we unite and work together to ensure cricket continues to thrive into the future as Australia’s favourite sport.”As chair, my aim is to ensure the integrity and growth of the game in Australia with strong governance embedded at Cricket Australia and reflected in all levels of cricket, from elite teams to community clubs.”Among my other main priorities will be a focus on a strong, sustainable financial future for the game and building on the growth in our participation rates, particularly among girls and women, and our multi-cultural communities.”Freudenstein, who will step down as interim chair immediately but will remain on the CA board, praised Henderson’s appointment.”Lachlan’s extensive cricket administrative experience and impressive business background, leadership qualities, financial experience and deep understanding of the game ensures that cricket has a new chair who will continue to build unity, trust and respect across all levels of our national sport,” Freudenstein said.”He brings a combination of fresh ideas, a clear plan and broad experience together with continuity to the position, having served as a CA director for the past three years.”The short-list of candidates for this role was outstanding but it was the unanimous opinion of the CA board that Lachlan was best suited to be our next chair.”CA will begin a search to find a new independent director to join the board.

5 reasons why Vinicius Junior should win the Ballon d’Or

The Ballon d’Or is the most prestigious individual honour in football, and the 2024 winner will be announced on Monday 28th October at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.

One player who could be in line to become the latest winner of the award is Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Junior. The attacker is among the 30 Ballon d’Or nominees, and we have looked at reasons why Vini Jr is among the frontrunners to be crowned in France and become the first Brazilian Ballon d’Or winner since Kaka in 2007.

The nominees have been announced, but who are the favourites to win the men’s Ballon d’Or in 2024?

1

Another La Liga title

Vinicius Jr. celebrates for Real Madrid

The left-winger helped Real Madrid to yet another La Liga title during a phenomenal 2023/24 season, with Vinicius picking up his third Spanish title.

He chipped in with 15 goals and 6 assists, bettering his tally of 20 goal contributions in 2022/23 in seven fewer games.

2

Champions League glory

It was in the Champions League where Vinicius really starred, with Real crowned kings of Europe for a record-extending 15th time with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the final at Wembley.

Vinicius impressed and scored against Dortmund, scoring six goals and registering five assists in 10 Champions League appearances across the campaign. Champions League winners tend to have a greater chance of lifting the Ballon d’Or, so Vinicius’ performances in Europe’s greatest club competition would have caught the eye.

Huge praise from stars including Neymar

Vinicius has come in for plenty of praise in the media over the last 12 months, establishing himself as one of Real Madrid’s most important players.

Fellow countryman Neymar is certain Vinicius will lift the Ballon d’Or, saying in the summer: “As for Vini, obviously I think the Ballon d’Or is his today. I sent [him] messages before and after the [Champions League final] game. He’s a boy I love with passion, a great friend that football gave me. He will certainly be crowned with the Ballon d’Or.

“He’s incredible. Carrying our country’s flag around the world and we’re really rooting for him.”

Meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand’s reaction to Vinicius’ Champions League final goal said it all.

4

Picking up where he left off in 2024/25

After a hugely successful 2023/24 season with Real and representing Brazil at the Copa America, Vinicius would have been forgiven if he made a relatively slow start to the current campaign.

However, he has carried on his excellent form, and had contributed to 10 goals prior to the October international break, all in just nine La Liga appearances. This included providing an assist in all five league games during September.

Market value at a career high

rayan-cherki-vinicius-junior-newcastle-opinion

Vinicius’ starring displays on the pitch for Real Madrid and Brazil have resulted in his transfer value increasing to a career-high figure, as per Transfermarkt.

It did sit at €150m (£126m) during the 2023/24 season, but increased to a whopping €180m (£151m) back in June after the Champions League final triumph. As a result, he’s the highest-valued player in Brazil, joint-highest at Real Madrid alongside Jude Bellingham and second-highest in the world behind Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.
