What do New Zealand and Pakistan need to do to qualify for the semi-finals?

Four teams can finish on 12 or more points – what are their respective chances looking like?

S Rajesh04-Nov-2023Australia
Two points following the win against England means Australia are well placed to seal the third semi-final spot and finish among the top three. They can confirm both if they beat Afghanistan in Mumbai on Tuesday – that will ensure Afghanistan can only finish on a maximum of 10 points, which will also be the ceiling for both New Zealand and Pakistan.Even if they lose to Afghanistan, they can still finish among the top three if they beat Bangladesh in their last game. For Afghanistan to go past them, they will not only have to win both their matches, but also go past Australia’s net run rate. Currently, the gap there is huge – Australia are sitting pretty on 0.924 compared to Afghanistan’s -0.330.Related

If Australia lose to both Afghanistan and Bangladesh, then it could come down to net run rates. Three teams – Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan – could be fighting for one spot if Afghanistan beat South Africa and if New Zealand and Pakistan win their last matches. If Afghanistan lose, then four teams on 10 points could be fighting for two spots. Even there, Australia’s healthy NRR should make them favourites to qualify. If New Zealand and Pakistan lose their last games, then Australia will qualify with 10 points even if they lose their last two.New Zealand
Four defeats in their last four matches have left New Zealand with much to do to ensure a semi-final spot. Even if they win their last game, they could miss out if Australia beat Bangladesh and Afghanistan win their last two – if all those results happen, four teams will finish with 12 or more points.New Zealand’s best case will be for them to beat Sri Lanka, for Afghanistan to lose their last two, and for England to beat Pakistan. Then 10 points will take them through without NRR coming into play.If both New Zealand and Pakistan win their last games, and if Afghanistan win a match too, it could come down to net run rates among the three teams. Currently New Zealand have a stronger NRR, and even if they beat Sri Lanka by just one run scoring 300, Pakistan will have to beat England by 130 (with the same total) to go past them.Given that rain is forecast through the week in Bengaluru, there is also the possibility of New Zealand’s last game being washed out; if that happens, they will finish with only nine points, and they will have to hope for Pakistan and Afghanistan to lose their remaining matches and stay on eight.Afghanistan are one of the teams that can finish on 12 points•AFP/Getty ImagesAfghanistan
If Afghanistan win their last two matches they will qualify for sure, since they are one of only four teams who can finish on 12 or more points. The problem for them is that their two opponents are Australia and South Africa, among the best teams in the tournament so far. The other problem for them is their NRR of -0.330, which is easily the poorest among the teams they could be jostling with for a place in the semi-finals.Their best chance of qualifying is if both Pakistan and New Zealand lose their last league matches and stay on eight points. Then, even one victory will be enough for them to qualify, without bringing run rates into play.Pakistan
After seemingly being out of the semi-final race, Pakistan have bounced back with wins against Bangladesh and New Zealand, and now have a shot at a top-four finish. For that to happen, though, they still need to depend on other results, even if they beat England in their last game. For example, even with 10 points, Pakistan could finish outside the top four if New Zealand beat Sri Lanka and finish with a better NRR, and if Australia win one of their last two. Afghanistan could play spoilsport too if they win their last two.Pakistan’s best case-scenario is for them to beat England, for Sri Lanka to beat New Zealand, and for Afghanistan to lose their last two matches. Then, they will qualify without NRR coming into play.As mentioned above, if New Zealand beat Sri Lanka even by a small margin, Pakistan will need to win their last game handily to overtake them on NRR. The advantage for Pakistan is that they will play the penultimate game of the league stage, so they will know exactly what they need to do to qualify.Sri Lanka
Netherlands
Both Sri Lanka and Netherlands are in a similar position – their net run rates are poor, and they can get a maximum of eight points. With three teams already on more than eight, their only chance is for the other teams – New Zealand, Pakistan and Afghanistan – to lose all their remaining matches and stay on eight. Then, either or both of these teams can also finish on eight by winning their last two matches, and NRR will decide which team goes through.Given their terrible NRRs though, that is only a mathematical possibility.

Uh oh: Rival club make contact over signing "unbelievable" £40m Chelsea star

A Premier League club have now made contact over signing an “unbelievable” Chelsea player this summer, according to a report.

Chelsea stars attracting attention

Although the Blues’ form has taken a downward turn since the end of 2024, with their title aspirations fading, there have been encouraging signs this season, and they are still in a strong position to return to the Champions League in the 2025/26 campaign.

As such, it is little wonder some of Enzo Maresca’s star players are attracting attention ahead of the summer transfer window, and Real Madrid have recently joined the race for midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who would be very keen on joining the Spanish side.

There have also been suggestions that Christopher Nkunku could be in line for a move this summer, with Bayern Munich interested in signing the forward, and the west Londoners would not stand in his way if an offer came in.

While Chelsea would be nonplussed by Nkunku’s departure, a new report has revealed they are desperate to keep hold of Levi Colwill – and there is now doubt over the defender’s future at Stamford Bridge amid interest from Liverpool.

The Reds have made contact to discuss the possibility of signing Colwill in the summer transfer window, which could be a concern for Maresca as the centre-back is viewed as a future captain and a key part of the squad.

Chelsea'sLeviColwillcelebrates after the match

The Englishman has previously been valued at £40m, but there is no inclination BlueCo would be willing to sanction his departure, given how highly he is rated by many key figures at the club.

Promisingly, the report states the player himself is not interested in a move anytime soon, having re-affirmed his commitment to his boyhood club by signing a new six-year contract in 2023.

"Unbelievable" Colwill now key player for Maresca

The 22-year-old has emerged as a key player for Chelsea this season, making 27 appearances in the Premier League, and he has put in some impressive performances in recent weeks, despite his side’s drop-off in form.

The Cobham academy graduate has also received high praise from BBC Sport journalist Nizaar Kinsella, who lauded him as “unbelievable”, while Maresca has praised him for his leadership qualities:

“The one that is doing fantastic in this kind of thing is Levi. Levi probably at the beginning of the season was not a leader but now you can see that he is one of the guys that is always speaking. We need to build that.”

As such, it is clear to see why some key figures at Chelsea view Colwill as a future captain, and they should make sure to knock back any advances from Liverpool this summer.

Raza trumps Pathirana as Punjab Kings win last-ball thriller

Devon Conway’s unbeaten 92 and MS Dhoni’s late sixes took CSK to 200 but it didn’t prove enough

Moody reckons Conway among the IPL’s best overseas buys of all time

Punjab Kings 201 for 6 (Prabhsimran 42, Livingstone 40, Deshpande 3-49, Jadeja 2-32) beat Chennai Super Kings 200 for 4 (Conway 92*, Gaikwad 37) by four wicketsA last-ball thriller that ended with Sikandar Raza pulling Matheesha Pathirana for three quick runs stunned a Chepauk crowd that may have expected their team to return home with a win and get closer to the top of the table. Chennai Super Kings had almost everything going for them; Devon Conway walloped an unbeaten 92, MS Dhoni stretched their total to 200 with two sixes to end the innings, and they strangled Kings’ chase through the middle overs, but lost despite largely being ahead through the final over thanks to Pathirana’s accuracy. With nine to win off the last over, Raza and Shahrukh Khan couldn’t hit a single boundary against Pathirana’s dipping deliveries. After a single, a leg bye, a dot ball and two twos off Pathirana’s yorkers and slower balls, Kings needed three off the last ball. Raza shuffled across and pulled a short-of-length slower ball over square leg, landing it right in between deep fine leg and deep midwicket to secure three and seal victory with his arms aloft. The two points took Kings to 10 points alongside three other teams, and to fifth place on the table, just behind Super Kings on net run rate.Sikandar Raza celebrates after taking Kings to a tense win•BCCILivingstone turns tables at the right time
Super Kings were favourites when Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran struggled to score freely off Pathirana and Maheesh Theekshana. With 72 to win off 30, Livingstone got to face Tushar Deshpande and belted three sixes in four balls with four leg byes in between. Even though he fell off the fifth ball of the over, Kings still had Jitesh Sharma and Shahrukh to come, and the 24-run over brought their equation down to 48 off 24.Curran and Jitesh slammed straight sixes off Ravindra Jadeja in the 17th, but Pathirana was going to bowl two of the last three overs. He removed Curran’s off stump with a stunning, full delivery that swerved past his outside edge, and with 22 needed off 12, Kings went after Deshpande in the 19th to try and ensure they didn’t leave too much for the last over. Jitesh lofted the first ball over cover for four and got out to a contentious decision two balls later when substitute fielder Shaik Rasheed caught him at the wide long-on boundary while almost touching the boundary cushions with his foot. With 15 required off eight, Raza edged his first ball for four to make it a 13-run over.Even though Pathirana sent down an excellent last over, Raza manipulated the field perfectly to pick ones and twos and sealed the match with a hard-run three.Boundaries rain in Kings’ powerplay, but not beyond
Kings came out all guns blazing in a steep chase. Shikhar Dhawan danced down off the second ball and went on to smash 21 off nine balls in Akash Singh’s first two overs. Prabhsimran Singh took on Theekshana’s carrom ball at the other end in a 12-run fourth over, and Kings raced to 46 for no loss in four overs.Dhawan sliced Deshpande to short third in the fifth over to fall for 28, but Prabhsimran kept his foot on the pedal with at least one boundary an over before being stumped off a 100kph Jadeja delivery in the ninth. It was then that Kings went through a slowdown, with Atharva Taide managing just 13 off 16 before falling to Jadeja in a three-run 11th over. Livingstone and Curran struggled to score freely off the Sri Lankan duo, scoring just 22 runs in overs 12 to 14, which pushed the asking rate beyond 12. But Livingstone soon broke the shackles against Deshpande, and Kings were back on track.Devon Conway made 92 not out, his fifth half-century in his last six innings•BCCICSK make quick start on a slow pitch
The Kings bowlers had to bowl in the unforgiving Chennai heat, and they were made to sweat further by Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway. Gaikwad showed excellent timing whereas Conway took the aerial route more often, such as when he hit Curran for back-to-back boundaries down the ground in the sixth over, which went for 16. Super Kings, who have lost the fewest wickets in the powerplay this IPL, finished the phase on 57 for 0.Conway smashes fifty, Dube promoted to take on spinners
Spinners were always going to be in focus at Chepauk. Rahul Chahar, Kings’ lead spinner, was introduced in the powerplay and the openers hit a six each off him down the ground to push the run rate towards nine. Conway also reeled off consecutive fours off Raza’s flat offbreaks before the bowler unleashed a legbreak to have Gaikwad stumped for 37.Super Kings promoted Dube to counter the spinners, and he also pulled Kagiso Rabada for six soon after Conway reverse-swept Raza to raise a 30-ball fifty.Conway bosses the middle overs
At 121 for 1 after 13, Kings brought back Arshdeep Singh, who struck when Dube holed out to long-on while attempting his third six. Super Kings kept sending out left-hand batters – Moeen Ali came in next – and they kept attacking the spinners. Conway and Moeen lapped up Livingstone for a 16-run 15th over, and Conway hit two more fours with sweeps off Chahar, before Arshdeep and Rabada slowed things a little with 11 boundary-free balls in the 18th and 19th overs. The Dhoni show
Once looking set for 200, Super Kings were 185 with an over to go. Two hundred looked even more distant when Jadeja fell off the first ball of the 20th and Dhoni managed just one off his first two balls. But once Dhoni got the strike back, he smoked two sixes to end the innings, an uppercut and a leg-side whack off a low full-toss from Curran. Conway stayed unbeaten on 92 off 52 with 16 fours and a six.

Arsenal now preparing £83m offer for "future legend" instead of Zubimendi

Arsenal are now preparing an £83m offer for a midfielder, who has been identified as a potential alternative to Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, according to reports from Spain.

Gunners linked with Zubimendi move

Zubimendi has been a well-known target for the Gunners for quite some time now, with journalist Steve Kay at one stage suggesting a summer deal is almost inevitable, given that personal terms were agreed a long time ago.

“It’s very close, Arsenal will sign him, they will trigger his release clause in the summer of €60m. Personal terms were agreed in March, but that is a normal thing with the player, that’s the first thing you do. That was done long ago.

Club chiefs are hoping to have the move fully wrapped up prior to the summer transfer window, but it is still yet to be made official, and there are now indications the north Londoners could move on to alternative targets.

ByBarney Lane Mar 3, 2025

Last week, it was revealed Arsenal are looking at Atletico Madrid’s Pablo Barrios, who may be brought in instead of Zubimendi, and there has now been a major update on their pursuit of the midfielder.

According to a report from Spain, the Gunners are now preparing a €100m (£83m) offer for Barrios, having identified him as their main target if a move for Zubimendi alludes them.

Atletico Madrid's PabloBarriosin action with Real Madrid's Fran Garcia

The Sociedad midfielder is still attracting attention from Real Madrid and other European clubs, so it is by no means a certainty the Spaniard moves to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

There is a belief Barrios could fit perfectly into Mikel Arteta’s team, indicating he is an ideal alternative target, but there may be competition from a number of other Premier League clubs, with Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool expressing interest.

Barrios could be a suitable Zubimendi alternative

Zubimendi seemingly remains Arsenal’s top target in midfield, but there are signs the 21-year-old Atletico man could also be a solid signing, having established himself as a key player for the Spanish side at a young age.

The Madrid-born midfielder has made 27 appearances in all competitions this season, providing two assists, and he has received high praise for his dribbling ability by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who also dubbed him a “future legend”.

The Spaniard is also extremely adept defensively, ranking in the 90th percentile for interceptions per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers.

Barrios is a well-rounded midfielder, who would be useful for Arteta at both ends of the pitch, but he is not yet showing “world-class” signs, unlike Zubimendi, who should remain the top target.

Liverpool now keen on "incredible" £83m Barcelona target to replace Diaz

Liverpool are now keen on signing an “incredible” forward, who has been identified as the ideal replacement for Luis Diaz, and they could hold a major advantage over Barcelona in the race for his signature, according to a report.

Diaz's Liverpool future in doubt

Diaz has been a regular starter for the Reds this season, and the winger has been impressive in front of goal, scoring 13 goals in 39 games in all competitions. However, his future is in doubt beyond the end of the campaign.

The 28-year-old is out of contract in 2027, and he has now started to attract interest from Chelsea and Barcelona, but the Merseyside club are not willing to let him go on the cheap, and would be looking to receive a fee of at least £67m.

Slot has told Liverpool he wants £50m target to replace "fantastic" player

Arne Slot isn’t messing about when it comes to Liverpool’s transfer priorities.

BySean Markus Clifford Mar 6, 2025

Arne Slot’s side have now started to look at potential replacements for the former FC Porto man, and a report from Spain has revealed AC Milan’s Rafael Leao has emerged as a target, with the winger viewed as the ideal Diaz heir.

Leao’s versatility, in being able to play on both wings and through the middle, makes him an attractive option for the Reds, and he has regularly provided goals and assists for Milan this season.

AC Milan's RafaelLeaobefore the match

As such, Liverpool believe the Portugal international could fit perfectly into Slot’s system, but there may be stiff competition for his signature, given that Barcelona are also known to be interested.

However, the Premier League leaders are in a far stronger position than Barca financially, which will give them an advantage in the transfer battle.

"Incredible" Leao could be the perfect Diaz replacement

Of course, Slot will be hoping Diaz opts to remain at Anfield in the summer, given the major role the forward has played in the Premier League title push, and the impact he’s made ever since arriving from Porto.

The Colombia international’s attacking output indicates he is developing year-on-year, but if he decides to move on this summer, Leao could be an excellent replacement.

Lauded as “incredible” by Fabrizio Romano, the Milan star has been his side’s most consistent performer in the Serie A this term, picking up six goals and six assists, with four goal contributions in his last five games.

With Darwin Núñez’s future in doubt, Slot may also want to bring in a forward capable of playing at striker, and the former Lille man fits the bill in that regard, amassing 23 goals and seven assists when fielded at centre-forward.

The only potential stumbling block could be the huge price tag, with recent reports revealing Milan could look to hold out for £83m, and his stock will only continue to rise if his performances stay at their current level.

Contract negotiations between Barcelona and Raphinha remain in the early stages, but key differences are already emerging. The club is offering a one-plus-one extension, wary of past long-term deals that strained finances. The ex-Leeds winger is, however, pushing for two guaranteed years. Salary is another sticking point, with the Brazilian's camp pressing for improved terms. Despite the gap, talks have begun with hopes of avoiding future complications. One area of consensus appears to be the release clause, which would be set at around €80 million (£68m/$90m) – a figure both parties consider fair, should a mutual split be desired down the line.
