Aston Villa’s first foray into the Champions League next season indicates that Unai Emery will need to improve his first team squad as greater challenges await.

While the Spaniard may have to sell a player or two during the summer transfer window in order to sign his targets, might one of his regular performers make the move from Villa Park?

It is no secret that Villa are showing plenty of admiration for Chelsea gem Conor Gallagher in recent weeks, yet it could be another Stamford Bridge academy graduate in Reece James who has emerged as a potential target for Emery.

The defender has been linked with a move to the Midlands recently as it looks like new Blues manager Enzo Maresca is set for a summer full of upheaval.

This may suggest Matty Cash’s future could be in doubt if a concrete move for James comes to fruition, especially considering Emery can utilise Ezri Konsa on the right side of the defence.

Cash may have played 46 times for Villa during the 2023/24 campaign, scoring five times and grabbing three assists, but consistency was a problem.

Indeed, among his teammates, he ranked only 13th for key passes per game (0.4) in the Premier League, while also ranking 15th for successful dribbles per game (0.4), behind the likes of Pau Torres and Konsa.

He was even labelled as a “disappointment” by Polish journalist Mateusz Swiecicki late last year and if Emery is serious about bolstering his squad, then Cash – who has reportedly been linked with a move to AC Milan – is surely one player who must be sent packing.

James has endured his fair share of injury issues previously, missing a total of 63 matches since the start of the 2022/23 season, but when he is fit and healthy, the right-back is a sublime athlete.

Trevoh Chalobah even dubbed James as “one of the best in the world” after a Champions League display against Milan in October 2022 and Emery will be desperate to add this sort of quality to his team.

Despite starting just five league matches last term, the Englishman still managed to create seven big chances, average 1.3 key passes per game and succeed with 0.9 dribbles per game – a success rate of 69% – which clearly indicates how impressive he was during his limited time on the pitch.

Now imagine how good he could be if he entered the new season in full health? The right-back has played 30 games in the Champions League for the Blues during his career, proving he has plenty of experience performing at the highest level and this could be useful indeed for Emery.

While the interest is there, the Spaniard may find it difficult luring James away from Chelsea, especially as he still has four years remaining on his current contract.

A chance to play in Europe’s premier club competition could be all the incentive he needs to make the move north, however, and it would certainly be a statement of intent should Emery secure his signature this summer.

Indeed, it is believed Jesus and Partey are attracting serious interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, who could make lucrative contract offers to lure them away from England and to the Middle East. Arsenal are also willing to listen to offers for them (GiveMeSport).

Partey has suffered from reoccurring injury problems throughout 2023/2024, which have only allowed him to feature in 12 Premier League games this season compared to last season's total of 33.

The Ghanaian has been an excellent asset since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2020, but with his contract also expiring next year, the time could be nearing for him to wave goodbye.

Meanwhile, Jesus' role in the team has diminished somewhat this season compared to last, thanks in part to the excellent form of Kai Havertz in a makeshift forward role under Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal are also looking to bring in a clinical new striker when the summer transfer window opens (Fabrizio Romano), which could hand Jesus an even bigger problem long-term when it comes to game time.

Both Jesus and Partey are on a combined salary of around £465,000-per-week, so it would make little sense to keep hold of them if Arteta doesn't see either playing major first-team roles past this season. Their sales could also help to fund Edu's transfer activity, which will be crucial for Arsenal as they look to maintain their place among England's most elite sides.

Alongside the big-name pair who now face potentially having to leave the Emirates Stadium, another player in Eddie Nketiah is now said to be attracting Ipswich Town interest.

Valued at around £43 million, newly-promoted Ipswich would surely be looking to whittle down that price tag, as they apparently eye up a hugely ambitious move right off the back of their climb from the Championship.

Arteta’s frustration was evident in his post-match interview with , where he expressed disbelief over the decision.

"If it [bookings for delaying the restart] happens throughout the game in a consistent way it is fine but it didn't. It is the inconsistency," Arteta said.

When asked if he was provided an explanation for the decision, he said: "None, like always."

Arteta added: "I was amazed. In the first half when the opponents did that they didn't get any booking. He makes the call by law in a non-critical area of the pitch when the ball hits the heel when turning around, to make that decision. By law, he can do it but be consistent. If that is the case they should have a man sent off and then it is 10 v 10."

Kane Williamson made a polished half-century but when he became the fourth wicket to fall, late in the evening session and with his side still more than 200 runs behind, England were in the ascendancy.Sam Curran was the bowler to strike, his second wicket of the day, and the closing stages saw New Zealand battling to avoid further losses as Jofra Archer tested the middle of the pitch in fading light. England’s total of 353, their highest in the first innings of an away Test since Melbourne 2017-18, was underpinned by Ben Stokes’ 91 but came accompanied by a sense of missed opportunities; however, their application in the field ensured it was New Zealand nervously casting around for a candidate to deliver a significant statement with the bat.While New Zealand’s bowlers deserved immense credit for dragging the tourists back after the slog of day one, they were aided by England reverting to type during a morning collapse of 4 for 18 in 21 balls. Things had looked much brighter for New Zealand after a productive start to the day. Stokes and Ollie Pope extended their overnight partnership to 74 before Southee intervened with three wickets in 11 balls. Although initially held back, once Southee had pried an opening he harnessed the conditions expertly to rip through England’s middle order.Stokes picked up regular boundaries as he moved into the 90s, only for Taylor to brilliantly atone for dropping him on day one. With New Zealand having shifted their cordon wide, Taylor had to react instinctively to a chance flying through regulation first slip but clung on one-handed high to his right.Operating in the high 120s kph but showing just why New Zealand’s attack is so adept when there is a hint of swing on offer, Southee struck twice more in his next over. Pope, who successfully reviewed an lbw decision in the third over of the morning, played some eye-catching shots to move past his previous Test best of 28, made on debut against India in 2018, but was lured into flashing at a delivery that left him enough to clip the edge through to BJ Watling.Curran was then bamboozled by a full inswinger, opting to review despite ball-tracking showing that the delivery would have crashed into middle and leg stumps. Archer negotiated the hat-trick ball uncertainly, and then fell in the following over as Trent Boult found his outside edge. From the relative comfort of 277 for 4, England had stumbled into trouble.With Leach nearly running out Buttler off the first ball he faced, England were in serious danger of folding. But Buttler hinted at his destructive capabilities when casually lofting Southee back down the ground, then launching Boult high over long-off for six in the last over before lunch. His stand with Leach had yielded 52 valuable runs when Buttler picked out Mitchell Santner at deep point – perhaps partly deceived by the fact Santner had left the field to sign autographs and only hurdled the boundary boards to return to the field of play as Wagner ran in to deliver the ball.
