Rahul has flattered to deceive, open with Rohit – Ganguly

VVS Laxman also in agreement that Karnataka opener has not cashed in on his Test opportunities

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Sep-2019Is Rohit Sharma the answer to India’s opening woes in Test cricket? Former captain Sourav Ganguly is strongly in favour, and believes India should try their ODI opener in place of incumbent Test opener KL Rahul, whom he feels has got a long rope yet “flattered to deceive.”Ganguly’s suggestion to open with Rohit comes on the back of Rahul’s failure to once again convert watchful starts in the recently concluded two-Test series in the Caribbean which India won 2-0. Rahul started confidently in both innings in the first Test in Antigua, scoring 44 and 38, but could not carry on.In Jamaica, West Indies captain Jason Holder made him to play at a ball that moved away viciously, but in the second innings Rahul’s struggles became more pronounced as he struggled for 63 balls to make 6.”After the World Cup, India embarked on the tour of West Indies with few areas to be figured out and also the role of few cricketers,” Ganguly said in his column on Thursday. “The opening still remains an area to work on. Mayank Agarwal looks good and will need a few more opportunities to thrash out his game. But his partner is the area to be looked into. KL Rahul flattered to deceive and has not come off and that leaves with an opening at the top.”Although Virat Kohli became the most successful Test captain for India after the series win, the inability to find a pair of openers who can offer consistency is bound to be a concern. It has been India’s weakest suit in the past two years.Since 2018 India have tried out seven openers in Tests including Rahul, M Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Parthiv Patel, Prithvi Shaw, Agarwal and Hanuma Vihari. In this period Rahul has got the most opportunities – 13 Tests and 23 innings – and averages 22.31 with a solitary century and four fifties.Watching Rahul closely in the Caribbean was another former captain and one of the best openers in Test cricket, Sunil Gavaskar, who was a commentator during the series. Gavaskar summed up Rahul’s struggles as stemming from the fact that he was not sure where his off stump was.ALSO READ – Patience key as KL Rahul grapples with tweaked technique
Ganguly’s suggestion to open with Rohit is not whimsical. As soon as Rohit finished the World Cup in England as the leading run-scorer and an unprecedented five centuries, Ganguly had immediately suggested that he should be tried as an opener in the Caribbean.”I had suggested earlier about trying Rohit Sharma as an opener in Test cricket and still believe that he needs to be given an opportunity because he is too good a player to be left out in the cold. After a fantastic World Cup, I believe he will be itching to grab the opportunity to open in Test cricket. With [Ajinkya] Rahane and Vihari nicely settled in there is not much chance to tamper with the middle order.”Incidentally, last year while India were playing the Test series in England, Rohit had said he was open to playing the role if given the opportunity despite having opened only thrice in first-class cricket. He averages 63, but those innings came in the early stages of his career, between 2009 and 2012. Rohit said he was confident only because he was never a specialist opener even in ODIs, where he is now one of the modern-day greats.”Look, I have never been offered [to open the innings in Tests] yet but I am open to anything, as in whatever the team management wants,” Rohit said last August during a promotional event. “I never thought I will be an opener in ODIs when I started playing or when I was playing for India. But it happened along the way, so I [want to] keep my options open. No option is shut for me, so if the opportunity comes, I will take it.”The pressure on Rahul will not cease soon. Even VVS Laxman, former India batsman, felt Rahul has failed to deliver.”There were lots of positives for India [after West Indies tour], but question marks hang over the batting,” Laxman wrote in his column in the on Thursday. “Cheteshwar Pujara must be disappointed at a modest start to a new season, but the greater concern is over KL Rahul. His ability is never under question, and he is no longer a newcomer to Test cricket. He has got numerous opportunities, but he has often flattered to deceive. India will look to more from him.”India’s next Test assignments include a three-match home series against South Africa in October, followed by a one-off Test against Bangladesh later in the year. India’s next overseas Test series will be in New Zealand in February-March where they play three Tests. It remains to be seen whether the selectors and the team management would bring youngster Prithvi Shaw back into the fold as soon as his doping ban ends on November 15, or whether they will want him to play in the Ranji Trophy, which starts in December. The one other option for the opening slot could be Vihari, who Kohli said was the “find” of the West Indies tour. Vihari got his maiden Test century in Jamaica and backed it up with a half-century in the second innings while finishing as the leading scorer in the series on both sides. In his short Test career, Vihari has already opened once, with Agarwal during the Boxing Day Test last year against Australia. Although he made just 8 and 13, India survived the first hour with the new ball confidently. Overall, in first-class cricket, Vihari has opened in four matches, and has two centuries at an average of 71 in five innings. However, Laxman feels Vihari’s calm approach is an asset in the lower order. “I can say that batting at No. 6 is not an easy task. But Vihari has been at home, enhancing his reputation as a Test batsman with every outing. He is very calm and mature at the crease, looks to dominate the spinners with exemplary use of the feet, and is assured against fast bowling. I look forward to greater things from him.”

The 25-year-old was forced off late on in France's 1-0 win over Austria in their Euros opener on Monday night. It was later revealed Mbappe had broken his nose, with the Real Madrid-bound star now being forced to wear a custom mask to protect himself when he returns to the pitch. Before that revelation, however, the French World Cup winner took to X, formerly Twitter, to ask fans for mask ideas – and supporters gleefully replied en masse.

Several hours after the match, Mbappe – who was jokingly referred to as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle 'Donatello' when he initially joined PSG on loan in 2017, before ex-team-mate Thiago Silva bought him a Michelangelo mask to wear in the changing room – tweeted: "Any ideas for masks 🎭😅 ?"

WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

@Alexis92_ tweeted a photo of Mbappe wearing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles mask and wrote: "This one Kylian."

@KM7ZOO commented: "The crazy flow you're going to have lol."

@callzopsg posted: "This one is actually a masterclass."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The good news for France and Mbappe is that the French Football Federation has confirmed that no operation will be required, but he will undergo treatment this week. It remains to be seen if the ex-Monaco star will be available to take on the Netherlands on Friday, and it has even been suggested he could be absent until the quarter-final stage.

Harry Gurney five-for seals comfortable Notts victory

Fifties for Alex Hales and Ben Duckett set up Nottinghamshire before left-armer claims T20-best figures

ECB Reporters Network26-Jul-2019Alex Hales and Ben Duckett scored half-centuries before Harry Gurney took five wickets to carry the Nottinghamshire Outlaws to a 27 run victory over the Derbyshire Falcons in the North Group at Derby.Hales made 63 from 42 balls and Duckett 64 from 40 as they added 92 in nine overs to lift the Outlaws to 198 for 5 after the Falcons had put them in. Luis Reece scored 61 from 42 balls but Gurney bowled superbly to claim 5 for 30, his best T20 figures, as the Falcons could only manage 171 for 8.The Outlaws had made a measured start with Hales and Joe Clarke selecting placement over power until Clarke skied a big drive at Fynn Hudson-Prentice in the sixth over. Duckett drove Matt Critchley for the first six in the ninth over as the Outlaws engaged the turbo with Hales driving Alex Hughes onto the media centre balcony and lifting Mark Watt for another maximum. The Falcons lost Logan van Beek with a shoulder injury before Duckett survived a swirling catch to cover on 32 off Watt who kicked the air in frustration when Hales drove him straight for his third six.Duckett pulled Critchley over the midwicket boundary but the leg-spinner broke the stand in the 15th over when Hales was caught at wide long-on and Dan Cristian became his second victim when he sliced a drive to mid-off.Tom Moores was bowled behind his legs by Ravi Rampaul and Duckett was brilliantly caught on the cover boundary but Samit Patel struck 14 from five balls to set a challenging target.Hudson-Prentice took two fours from Matt Carter’s opening over and Billy Godleman pulled Gurney for six but the seamer responded by having Hudson-Prentice caught at cover off a sliced drive.Reece drove Carter over long-off and pulled Jake Ball for another six to take the Falcons to 53 for 1 at the end of the Powerplay. Godleman was reprieved on 19 when Duckett just failed to take a diving one-handed catch at cover, injuring himself in the process, and the Outlaws turned the screw to leave the Falcons needing 115 off the last 10 overs. The climbing run rate forced Godleman to pull Gurney to deep square leg and although Reece drove Patel for his third six to reach fifty off 29 balls, Wayne Madsen became Imad Wasim’s first victim for the Outlaws in the 14th over.Reece and Leus du Plooy took 14 from a Carter over but Reece was caught behind trying to scoop Gurney who settled it by removing Critchley and du Plooy in his final over as the game finished in pouring rain.

"I was just told" – Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool have made January calls

Whilst Liverpool's focus was on revamping their midfield during the summer transfer window, it seems as though their attention has turned towards elsewhere in Jurgen Klopp's squad this month, as they gear up for a vital Premier League title run in.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds may not have originally planned to endure a busy month of transfer business, but Joel Matip's season-ending injury alongside injuries to Kostas Tsimikas and Andy Robertson, among others, could have forced Liverpool's hand.

That said, according to Football Transfers, Liverpool have held talks over a deal to sign Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a transfer that would provide cover down Klopp's left-hand side. Meanwhile, those at Anfield may not be done when it comes to midfield additions, having reportedly joined the race for Aston Villa's Douglas Luiz.

Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz

What's more, according to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have made their first move to sign a centre-back this month, making "calls" to agents. The transfer expert said in his Daily Briefing for Caught Offside: “As mentioned yesterday, Liverpool are exploring the market for potential new signings at centre-back, though it’s not something urgent or guaranteed to happen this January, as we know Liverpool generally prefer to do their business in the summer.

“I don’t have any concrete name yet at this stage, but I was just told that Liverpool have made some calls to some centre-backs’ agents to be informed on situations – it hasn’t become a concrete negotiation as of now. It’s not easy to find top players in the January window, that’s the problem.”

The Reds are reportedly keen on a deal to sign the versatile Premier League defender.

ByDan Emery Jan 17, 2024

Whilst it remains to be seen just who those centre-backs are, reports have linked the Merseyside club with moves for Ousmane Diomande, Goncalo Inacio and Jean-Clair Todibo, who they are reportedly in pole position for over the likes of Manchester United. So, it could yet be an interesting couple of weeks at Anfield.

Matip's injury has forced Liverpool's hand

Matip's ACL injury has left Liverpool with no choice but to pursue a centre-back this month. The former Schalke man, when available, joined Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk, Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez on a list of five solid options for Klopp to choose from. With Matip now out and his contract expiring in the summer either way, and Gomez covering the full-back role, Liverpool's list has gone from five to three options all too quickly, raising the need for another central defender.

Like Romano, Klopp spoke about the problem of finding top players in the January transfer window, saying last month via 90Min: "In eight years here, I just never understand this. You always talk about transfers as if they would be the easiest thing in the world. Just bring in a player, find the money for it, as if we have endless money. I really don’t understand it. Everybody, you, the fans, everyone talks about it.

“They all cost money. It has to be the right player. Tell me a club who wants to sell a top, top centre-half who could play for Liverpool? Why should we start that process? We’ve only known for a few days that Joel will be out for a long time, which is really bad for us. We still have four centre-halves which is absolutely alright."

However, the damage done by recent injuries is too great for the boss to ignore if he wants to keep fighting on four fronts.

The veteran forward joined the Red Dragons last summer as a free agent and went onto score eight goals as they earned promotion to League One last month. The 37-year-old has played for Burnley, Wolves, Sunderland, Marseille, and more, but said the bond his current team-mates have is up there with the best he's seen.

He said, via The Leader: "I have really enjoyed this season, it has been fantastic. It has been great getting to play with the boys. It is an absolute great dressing room, one of the best I have been in. I know it is easy for me to say because of what we have done but on a personal level, the lads, the friendships and the bond I have made has been great. Honestly, you couldn't have asked for a better changing room to come into, especially at this stage of my career. A few of the lads will be mates for life."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite being in the twilight stage of his career, Wrexham clearly value the former Scotland international's presence at the club; evidenced by the striker being offered a contract extension at SToK Cae Ras. He has plenty of experience in top European leagues, so his nous and quality may be invaluable in League One.

Derby now plotting move to sign "phenomenal" left-footed player for Warne

Derby County are believed to be plotting a move to sign a "phenomenal" player for Paul Warne, according to a fresh transfer update.

Derby eyeing January signings

The Rams have made a promising start to the 2023/24 season, currently sitting seventh in the League One table ahead of the festive action in the coming weeks. Granted, Derby could be in a better position towards the automatic promotion positions where Portsmouth and Oxford United currently are, but they are nicely poised to finish in the playoff places, hopefully making their way back into the Championship next year.

The January transfer window will allow Warne the chance to add to his squad, should the money and right targets be available, and the Rams have been linked with a number of players in recent weeks. Young Irish midfielder Adam Murphy is one player who has been backed to move to Derby, being seen as a long-term acquisition, while AFC Wimbledon's Ali Al-Hamadi is also seen as an option for the Rams. It looks as though another player has now joined the list of potential additions at Pride Park in January, with a fellow League One ace tipped to head there.

Derby want to sign CJ Hamilton

According to Football Insider, Derby are one of the clubs interested in signing Blackpool winger CJ Hamilton, with the Rams "plotting a move" for him.

Derby County manager Paul Warne.

Huddersfield Town and Queens Park Rangers are also seen as potential suitors for the 28-year-old wide man, who is out of contract at his current club at the end of this season. That means Blackpool could jump at the chance to earn a fee for him in January, rather than lose him on a free transfer next summer.

It is claimed that "Derby are keen to strengthen in the new year to boost their promotion bid", with numerous clubs "ready to test Blackpool's resolve". Derby may not find it easy to bring in Hamilton in January, considering there is interest from clubs higher up in the Football League currently, but he could be such a shrewd addition if they get a deal over the line.

This season, the Rams transfer target has four assists in League One so far this season, highlighting the creativity he can provide from out wide and at 28 years of age, he is someone with lots of experience, not to mention being a left-footed player who can play on either flank, which could appeal to Warne.

Hamilton has even earned huge praise from former Mansfield Town manager David Flitcroft in the past during their time at the club together, saying of him:

"I can play him anywhere and he is phenomenal. He's had another match-winning day today. Winning goals are the ones you remember."

Derby may need an extra injection of attacking quality in their squad to further enhance their hopes of going up to the Championship this season, and in Hamilton, they could have a perfect option to bring in. An overall tally of 24 goals and 34 assists combined in the Championship, League One and League Two combined further outlines why he could be a smart signing.

    WHAT KANE SAID

Prolific Bayern marksman Kane, with 39 goals to his name this season, will now line up against Bellingham in an epic semi-final encounter with plenty riding on it. The England captain has said of that contest: “Jude has had a fantastic season, he’s a top player. I’m really happy for him but it will be another war against his team – but that’s the experiences that we both went abroad to try to achieve, to play in these big nights in the Champions League, to play in these big semi-finals. It will be one to enjoy and I’m sure there will be a lot of English fans watching both of us. We have to focus on ourselves. Of course, I’ll say hello but once we’re on the pitch, it’s business.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane and Bellingham are hoping to book a date in the familiar surroundings of Wembley Stadium on June 1, with the Champions League final heading to London. Kane added on a bid to face either Borussia Dortmund or Paris Saint-Germain at the home of English football: “With Wembley being our national stadium, it’s extra motivation there for us but there are two games ahead of us before that, which are going to be really tough so we have to focus on that. Real Madrid are a big club with amazing history in the Champions League so it’s going to be a really difficult game for us. But that’s what the semi-finals of the Champions League are all about, the biggest teams, so we enjoy this and then prepare for that game in a couple of weeks.”

Aston Villa could already have a Watkins heir in 17y/o "star in the making"

Aston Villa know all too well the benefits of harvesting a talent from their academy, and Unai Emery could be handed a boost in the near future with one of the club’s pending stars.

The Villans are enjoying life under the Spaniard and challenging towards the top of the table, however there is much to be celebrated behind the scenes of the first team, as one starlet in particular is making waves at Bodymoor Heath.

Rory Wilson's statistics at youth level

Last summer, Villa welcomed Scottish striker Rory Wilson to the academy, signing the highly-rated teenager from Rangers.

Prior to his arrival, the 17-year-old netted an outstanding 49 goals in 2021/22, with his exit a huge loss for the Scottish Premiership outfit who failed to tie the prospect down with a refreshed contract.

At the point of his signing for Villa, academy manager Mark Harrison expressed that the club were “delighted” by his arrival, adding that he hoped to see him one day feature for the first team, a wish that could become reality sooner than expected.

The Scotland U21 international has made a statement start following his arrival in 2022, scoring 26 goals in only 29 appearances for Villa’s U18’s so far, which could warrant him taking the next step in his career in the Midlands.

Rory Wilson's style of play

According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, Villa are “prepared to discuss” a five-year contract for Wilson, as he continues to impress at youth level.

In securing his future, the Villans could not only line up a future heir to take the throne in the first team, but also be planting a gold mine.

Romano mentioned that “many clubs” have the 17-year-old on their radar, and if his progression continues to develop at such a searing pace, who knows how much the striker could eventually be worth in years to come.

What Villa have in Wilson is one of the “best in Europe”, as he was once dubbed by international coach Brian McLaughlin for his ability to score goals so frequently.

Deployable as both a centre-forward or as a winger on either flank, the teen sensation was branded a ‘versatile attacker’ and lauded as a ‘lively frontman’ by the Daily Record’s Mark Pirie.

Such a high scoring rate showcases a clinical streak in the final third, a trait that is not recognisable in every forward in the game, however Villa are in safe hands with their current and future leaders of the line.

Emery has his own goal machine in Ollie Watkins, who like Wilson, understands how to put the ball into the net, having already scored nine goals in all competitions for the Midlands club this term, after previously netting 16 goals across all fronts in 2022/23.

Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins.

By tying the Scotsman down, the Villans could be in good stead to line up their eventual heir to the in-form Watkins as Wilson continues to dominate at youth level, seeing him praised as a “star in the making” by U23 scout Antonio Mango.

Villa have signalled their understanding of the potential they have in a talent as prolific as Wilson with rumoured contract talks, with the next steps there for the teen to take when Emery deems it appropriate to integrate him into the first team.

Away from the expensive forwards on show in the transfer market, the Spaniard could already have his eventual replacement for Watkins lined up, with Wilson in line to have a flourishing career at Villa Park.
