Blackburn learn compensation fee to appoint 44 y/o as Eustace’s replacement

Blackburn Rovers are now aware of how much it will cost to take a League One manager out of his current job and bring him to Ewood Park, according to a reliable reporter.

Sacked managers 2024/25: Every managerial casualty this season

Here’s every manager who’s been on the chopping block in England’s top four leagues since the start of the campaign.

It was announced in the middle of last week that John Eustace had left his role as Blackburn boss to become the new Derby County manager. It was a decision that came as a surprise to many, but since his departure, the Lancashire side have won back-to-back games, beating West Brom and Plymouth Argyle by 2-0 scorelines.

Interim boss David Lowe has done an excellent job at keeping Blackburn’s play-off hopes alive, but it is likely that a new manager will be brought into the club as they look to build on Eustace’s success.

There have already been a few names linked to the vacancy at Ewood Park, with Carlos Carvalhal, Aitor Karanka, Raphael Wicky, and George Boateng all being mentioned as possible candidates.

Meanwhile, former Wolves manager Gary O’Neil has also been added to the Championship side’s shortlist, as he’s been out of work for a couple of months since leaving Molineux.

As well as O’Neil, Leyton Orient manager Richie Wellens has been added to the managerial shortlist after continuing to impress in the third tier.

Blackburn learn compensation fee to appoint 44 y/o

Now, according to reporter Alan Nixon, as relayed by Football League World, Blackburn have learned that it will cost them £250,000 to get Wellens out of Leyton Orient and into the hot seat at Ewood Park.

The 44-year-old, who likes his sides to play in a 4-2-3-1 formation, joined Orient in March 2022 and has since taken charge of 153 games at the club, guiding them to promotion in his first full season, and they are now in a fight for a play-off spot in League One.

It is unclear how interested Blackburn are in appointing Wellens as their next manager, but the fee certainly suggests Orient are in no mood to hand him over on the cheap as they seek a spot in the Championship.

Nixon added that Rovers are stepping up their search for a new manager this week, with them set to speak to candidates as they try to get an appointment in place for their game against Swansea City next Saturday.

After 30 games in League One this season, Wellens has guided Orient to 15 wins and 5 draws. The east London side held their own against Manchester City last week in the FA Cup and are serious contenders for promotion this season, evidence that makes it no surprise that Wellens is of interest to teams in a league above.

Dawid Malan, Chris Woakes star with bat and ball as England power to series win

For a series that has showcased the best of international T20 cricket, it was a shame the finale carried so little jeopardy. England’s comprehensive team performance was to blame for that, firstly by posting 209 for three which required Pakistan to embark on a record-breaking chase at the Gaddafi Stadium. At no point did they threaten to make it, eventually finishing on 142 for eight from their 20 overs. A smart bowling performance confirmed a 4-3 series to England thanks to victory by 67 runs, Pakistan’s fourth-biggest such margin in the format.Dawid Malan registered his first half-century of the tour, with an unbeaten 78 that began in the fifth over. He was accompanied throughout the latter half of the innings by the ever-impressive Harry Brook, who contributed 46 not out to a stand of 108 that, ultimately, took the result beyond Pakistan’s control. That’s not to say the game was won at the break. But within eight deliveries of the chase, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, with over 600 runs between them this series and a pair that had negotiated a target of 200 between them in the second T20I at Karachi, were seen off with just five on the board. Chris Woakes, replacing Richard Gleeson as England’s only change, coerced Babar to drive straight to Brook at cover with a dipping slower ball, before Reece Topley took out Rizwan’s off stump with a delivery that hooped in and nipped away off the surface. Woakes would go on to finish with three for 26, including Shan Masood, whose 56 was Pakistan’s only score of note. The crowd at Lahore had high hopes for a blockbuster finish, not least with the reintroduction of their A-listers to the XI with Rizwan and Haris Rauf returning along with Mohammad Hasnain and Khushdil Shah. England, by contrast, opted against using Mark Wood, a key point of difference in their attack, with a view to preserving him for the T20 World Cup in Australia, while captain Jos Buttler sat out once more. With the tourists batting first after Moeen Ali lost the toss, Phil Salt and Alex Hales picked up where they left off in the sixth match. Though a repeat of the 82 England managed during the powerplay on Friday looked a stretch, the pair were well-set on 39 for no loss after four overs. However three balls into the fifth, they were back in the dressing room. Hales was trapped lbw by a delivery from Hasnain that nipped back as the right-hander strayed across his stumps. Salt was then run out by Shadab Khan, with more than a little help from Malan who aborted a single late and with little communication. A direct hit beat Salt as he sprinted almost the full length of the pitch to the bowler’s end.Malan used his error as fuel, initially with Ben Duckett as the pair shared a stand off 62 that went at two a ball and saw them team up to take down Shadab for 20 in the ninth over, with a six apiece. Duckett was eventually done in by a brilliant piece of work from Rizwan behind the stumps, who gathered the ball off an under-edge and brought it to the stumps in one motion. But the assault on spin continued as Brook climbed into Shadab and Iftikhar Ahmed, whose final over was taken for 12 to leave England 146 for three after 14.Hasnain and Rauf combined to ensure just eight were scored in the next two overs. But Pakistan could and should have restricted the tourists further had they taken their chances. Malan was dropped on 29 by Babar at cover who then went on to give Brook a life on 24 when a simple catch pierced his hands at mid-off, after Rauf had drawn a high mishit with a slower delivery.Rauf then had Malan missed off his bowling (on 64) by Mohammad Wasim in the deep, whose misery was taken to new depths when he stepped up to close out the innings. Malan struck a six over square leg and edged for four through third man off the first two deliveries before Brook smashed the fourth back over the bowler’s head as 20 runs came from the final over.Chris Woakes celebrates a wicket in his opening over•Getty Images

No one in the Pakistan line-up even threatened to get out of third gear. It took 8.4 overs for the boundaries to be cleared, when Masood slog-swept Adil Rashid. There was only one more boundary – again off Rashid – when Khushdil heaved to midwicket. As much as the bowlers should take credit, particularly David Willey (two for 22) whose economy rate of 5.50 was the lowest of the bowlers who sent down more than one over. He could have had three if anyone had reached Hasnain’s top-edge which ended up landing safely in between mid-off and mid-on.The lack of effort to get to the chance, and the lack of remonstration from the bowler, spoke of a match that was over well before it came to an end. But the overriding thought at the end of these seven matches was how long and overdue it has been for an England side to tour Pakistan. Of all the takeaways from this series, particularly for the World Cup, that is a standout positive.Brook sideWe did not learn anything new about Brook following his 46 in this match. Even coming off just 29 deliveries, with four sixes among the five boundaries struck, told us nothing we did not know about his temperament or shot selection. All that needed to be known, of a middle-order dynamo who has the game to operate in every period of a T20 innings, had been confirmed in the previous 191 runs of this tour, especially the 81 not out in the third meeting which propelled England to 220. On Sunday, having ticked over to 29 off 23, his next six balls brought 17, as he cleared the fence twice against Wasim and, most importantly of all, rotated the strike to aid the free-flowing Malan, including for the start of the final over. That Brook ends the series as England’s leading run-scorer with 237 at 79 is incredible enough for a 23-year-old on his first England tour. To do so from No.5, and to strike at 163, confirmed that even with Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Liam Livingstone reinforcing the batting in Australia, Brook has cemented his place in the team for the T20 World Cup.Rauf JusticeThere was a moment during the third over of England’s innings that typified Haris Rauf’s attitude. Alex Hales had hammered Mohammed Wasim inside mid-off for a certain four before Rauf, galloping from mid-on, hurled himself at the sponge and saved a boundary. We’re in an era where fast bowlers have to do the dirty work and, as outstanding as the piece of fielding as it was, Rauf expects those standards of himself. Unfortunately, the favour went unreturned. He should have boasted the wickets of Brook and Malan – both dropped by his captain – and in turn Pakistan lost the thread of this match. Even without a notch or two in the wicket column, his four overs in which he conceded just one boundary ensured this wasn’t a whole lot worse. He finishes as the leading wicket-taker with eight at 23.62, which serves as a reminder that even a world-class operator relies on support from those around him.Lahore delivers its final verdictThere were cheers when Khushdil Shah was caught down the leg-side off Rashid. It was as much a reflection of the next man in – Asif Ali – as Khushdil’s own 27 off 25, which had been as helpful to the cause as a hole in the bat. This wasn’t the first time in these weeks that crowds have yearned for Asif to come to the crease while expressing glee at Khushdil’s departure. He’d do well not to take it personally, though that’s easier to say on this side of the fence.Fundamentally, he is a man caught in the midst of a public disapproval of the way Pakistan approach batting in this format, particularly during the middle overs and especially beyond their superstar openers. No team should be so reliant on two players and Asif is certainly one who should be given opportunities up the order, given his propensity to hit boundaries. As it happens, he only managed seven today before being caught out at deep square leg for Woakes’ second. At that point, with 111 required from the final 31 balls, the crowds emptied into the streets of Lahore as the rest of the match played out in front of a half-empty stadium. The silence that accompanied the final throes arguably sent the loudest message of all.

West Ham agree personal terms with "fast" forward over £100k-per-week deal

West Ham United have apparently reached an agreement on personal terms for the potential signing of one forward, with an update also coming to light on club-to-club talks, as Graham Potter’s side attempt to bring in a new attacker before the deadline.

Injuries to Niclas Füllkrug and Michail Antonio have exacerbated West Ham’s need for a quality, fresh option to arrive at the London Stadium and reinforce Potter’s forward line.

West Ham are also among the Premier League’s lowest-scoring teams, with relegation-threatened Wolves bagging more in the final third than Potter’s side, which partly highlights why the Irons are so keen to get a new centre-forward over the line before February 3rd.

Brighton are set to allow young marksman Evan Ferguson to depart the Seagulls on loan this month, which has sparked interest from West Ham and multiple other sides.

The 20-year-old, who’s been unable to wrestle back his place at Brighton ahead of Danny Welbeck and Joao Pedro, is believed to be a top target for Potter, with West Ham hopeful of winning any race for Ferguson ahead of English rivals.

However, the Republic of Ireland international isn’t their only target. West Ham have also held discussions to sign Andre Silva from RB Leipzig, while Ajax forward Brian Brobbey is also high on their agenda.

Dutch media reports shared news last week that West Ham were starting to make a “serious attempt” to sign Brobbey on loan with an obligation to buy, contacting both Ajax and the player himself with a proposal.

Brian Brobbey for Ajax.

However, some reliable journalists have since shared that it may not be that straightforward, and the costs of a potential move are deemed “too high” by West Ham chiefs as things stand – even if a deal isn’t completely off the table (Jacob Steinberg).

Brian Brobbey has agreed personal terms with West Ham

That being said, Potter’s side have still made some serious headway in a move for the Netherlands international. According to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, West Ham have agreed personal terms with Brobbey on a £100,000-per-week contract, so there appears to be no issue in convincing the forward to swap Amsterdam for the English capital.

The broadcast giant reiterates that West Ham and Ajax are yet to come to an agreement on payment, though, which means their pursuit of a new number nine is still wide open. If they can land Brobbey, it is worth taking a look at some of the plaudits he has received.

“He is so fast and strong, he was very annoying for the defenders of PSV and dangerous for Ajax,” said ex-Dutch striker Pierre van Hooijdonk.

“The ball on the post, the ball in front. You can see from those running actions that he is a real striker,” says the former striker. Leave Brobbey alone. In my eyes, he should always play. Otherwise, Ajax will have too many attackers who want the ball in their feet and the team will be too predictable.”

Jurgen Klopp wants £25m+ Southampton ace as top priority in his new job

As Southampton continue to head towards an unwanted record in the Premier League, they’re reportedly in danger of losing their star man amid interest from Jurgen Klopp and RB Leipzig.

Southampton transfer news

Currently on six points, the idea of Premier League safety is merely a fantasy for Southampton and things couldn’t be much more bleaker even after attempting to turn things around by hiring Ivan Juric. Now in January, it wouldn’t be absurd to suggest that those at St Mary’s should be keeping one eye on Derby County’s infamous record for the lowest points total in Premier League history – reaching just 11 points in 2007/08.

They will, of course, be desperate to at least restore some pride in the remainder of the campaign to allow the Rams to keep hold of their history and avoid humiliation. The arrival of Albert Gronbaek could yet help on that front, with the Danish attacking midfielder arriving on loan in the hope of finally sharpening a blunt Southampton frontline.

Speaking to the club website for the first time, Gronbaek said: “I’m just so excited. It’s a big club and I think the playing style is suiting me very well, so I’m just very pleased to be here.

“The facilities are very good and the stadium looks incredible. It’s even bigger and better when you come in person, so I’m just so excited to play there. I’m proud to be here.”

As one attacking star arrives, however, another could yet depart. According to Sky Sports Germany’s Philipp Hinze, RB Leipzig have now made Tyler Dibling one of their top priorities with the Saints only willing to sell for over €30m (£25m) this month.

What’s more, according to The Boot Room, Red Bull’s new Head of Global Soccer and former Liverpool manager Klopp wants to sign the Southampton star in one of his first moves in his new role for RB Leipzig and other Red Bull clubs.

Southampton must fend off interest in "brilliant" Dibling

If Southampton are to stand any chance of pulling off a miracle escape or at least avoiding unwanted history then keeping hold of Dibling is a must. The Saints, in the likely event of relegation, will likely have no choice but to part ways with such a talent. Until that day arrives, however, they should turn down the interest of Leipzig and Klopp.

Full of praise for the young winger before he was shown the door at St Mary’s, Russell Martin told reporters as relayed by Tribal Football: “Tyler was unfortunate not to play earlier because he had an amazing pre-season. So he has an incredible belief in himself in a really nice, humble and modest way.

“But he has to just keep living at 100 per cent and understand where that is and understand what’s got him this far. I think he has a brilliant support network with his family. He has a lot of trust from us and he has that back. It’s not always plain sailing with young players.”

FSG now ready to accept £60m offer to sell "world-class" Liverpool star

Liverpool are said to be ready to accept a £60m offer for a player who has been hailed as “world-class”, according to a new transfer update.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds suffered a frustrating afternoon on Sunday, being held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by rivals Manchester United. It was two valuable points dropped in the Premier League title race, with Arne Slot’s side failing to take advantage of Arsenal’s 1-1 draw away to Brighton on Saturday.

Away from the on-pitch action, Liverpool continue to be linked with new signings, with VfB Stuttgart midfielder Enzo Millot backed to seal a move to Anfield. The 22-year-old is a highly-rated prospect who has two goals and three assists in six Champions League appearances this season.

Enzo Millot for Stuttgart

Meanwhile, Lille striker Jonathan David has also emerged as a target for the Reds, with the Canadian being looked at as an upgrade on Darwin Nunez, who continues to flatter to deceive in his third season at the club. The 24-year-old is one of Ligue 1’s best players, but a move to the Premier League could appeal.

A new left-back needs to be looked at by Liverpool in the summer, with Andy Robertson looking past his best, and Fulham ace Antonee Robinson is seen as a leading contender to come in. The American recently bagged two assists in the 2-2 draw at Anfield in the league.

Liverpool willing to accept £60m offer for Nunez

According to a fresh update from Football Insider, Liverpool and FSG are now “open” to accepting an offer of as much as £60m for Nunez in 2025.

The Uruguayan is struggling to be a regular starter under Slot, and it looks as though his time at Anfield could end in the near future, especially if strong interest emerges.

Darwin Nunez celebrates for Liverpool

It does increasingly feel as though selling Nunez at the end of the season is the best outcome for Liverpool, with the 25-year-old simply not improving enough since arriving from Benfica in the summer of 2022.

His finishing still leaves a lot to be desired, but his all-round play and decision-making are also arguably lacking, not to mention a penchant for risking getting into trouble by clashing with opposition players. Nunez has undoubted qualities, however, which is why some would like to see him stay on, with Guillem Balague even calling him “world-class”, saying:

“People have focused on a supposed lack of quality in his finishing, but his mentality was ignored and that is what has taken him to where he is. He is not the Benfica player, he is becoming a world-class player.”

Despite this, Slot seemingly doesn’t consider Nunez a huge player, considering the lack of starts coming his way, and he doesn’t seem to have adjusted to the Dutchman’s style of play as well as others, from Cody Gakpo to Luis Diaz.

Everton struck gold selling £33m star who Lampard was "really keen" to sign

Everton were back to their dogged best away at Arsenal last time out, with a 0-0 final scoreline very much suiting the Toffees over a frustrated Gunners side.

Sean Dyche’s men were ultra-cautious at the Emirates Stadium just a game on from their emphatic 4-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, as the Merseyside outfit managed to show both sides to their game in drastically different affairs.

The former Burnley boss will hope his side can be as adaptable when push comes to shove in even tougher games near the foot of the league to come, having been successful in patches this season with his team.

There have been a number of star performers on Everton’s end even when all the results haven’t been swinging in their favour, with the defenders getting their flowers in North London.

Everton's star players this season

It’s only fair to start by praising man mountain James Tarkowski for his warrior-like showings all across the season to date, which saw the seasoned defender win four duels in the stalemate against Mikel Arteta’s men.

Helping his side pick up six clean sheets when present too, it goes without saying that Dyche will continue to pick the ex-Burnley man moving forward, alongside his concrete number one goalkeeper in Jordan Pickford.

The England international was alert to everything that came his way in North London with an impressive five saves tallied up, with Pickford only leaking 21 strikes from 15 outings.

Whilst the excitement levels haven’t always been through the roof at Goodison Park, Dwight McNeil has at least raised a smile with some rampaging attacking displays, resulting in the electric left winger picking up a respectable three goals and three assists in the Premier League.

Dwight McNeil in action for Everton

Dyche does have to be commended for the job he’s doing in keeping the Toffees afloat, considering Amadou Onana’s major £50m move to Aston Villa this summer could have derailed his troops massively, but the scars from that bumper deal no longer seem that visible.

Everton struck gold with £50m sale

When putting pen to paper on a move to Merseyside that was worth £33m, it didn’t just excite supporters but former boss Frank Lampard was rightfully delighted too, admitting that he was “really keen” for the midfielder to join from Lille in the summer of 2022.

The Belgian would go on to make 72 appearances in total for Everton before the allure of Villa Park would come calling, with four goals and three assists picked up along the way as a hard-working holding midfielder for the cause.

But, Everton couldn’t really turn down the excessive millions that came their way from Unai Emery’s side, with £50m coughed up by the Villans to land Onana earlier this year.

The £140k-per-week midfielder has since settled into another fresh location swimmingly, with three goals picked up from 15 games, but recent injury issues has also seen him fall out of his manager’s first team plans.

Moreover, as can be seen glancing at the table above, the Toffees have bounced back from a number of high-profile departures well in the past, which included the likes of John Stones leaving, with the aforementioned Tarkowski now a rock at the back.

Idrissa Gueye – perhaps Onana’s natural replacement – notably shone against Arsenal in the centre of the park, with the experienced battler winning a sublime nine duels to help his team shut out the agitated Gunners.

In an ideal world, Dyche would love to have Onana still at his disposal – but with £17m profit in the bank – the Toffees would have been foolish not to begrudgingly accept given their PSR struggles.

Manjrekar: Bails are 'redundant', add a 'lot of complications'

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar says bails are “redundant” in today’s cricket, and need to be done away with because “they add a lot of complications” to an already complex set of rules. The debate was triggered in the first place after Yuzvendra Chahal was denied an “obvious wicket” when he beat David Warner in the air and off the pitch to hit the wicket. However, while the stumps lit up, the bails didn’t fall, thus failing to fulfil a major requirement of the bowled law.Related

  • IPL 2019: Why won't the zing bails fall?

It is widely believed bails were used in cricket in the pre-technology era to be sure the ball had hit the wicket. Manjrekar, and many other pundits, believe that given today’s technology, the bails can be done away with. The LED bails currently in use light up the moment they lose contact with the rest of the wicket, which is also used as the instance the wicket was broken for purposes of checking run-outs and stumpings. If the bails were to be done away with, it shouldn’t be too difficult to have wickets that light up the moment they are touched.”I’ve said this before as well, it’s redundant now with the LED stumps to have the bails on,” Manjrekar said on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time: Out. “Today it would’ve been a wicket deserving for Chahal who bowled superbly. It was a terrible shot from Warner, and it didn’t get a wicket. Unless it’s adding an aesthetic value, they should just get rid of the bails because they’re completely redundant with LED technology.”9:00

Runorder from the archives (Jan 2021): Time to do away with the bails?

“[The bails were used] just to be sure the ball has hit the stumps they had these bails on top, because if the ball just kissed the stumps you won’t know if there weren’t any bails,” Manjrekar said. “And the bails were meant to fall off if the stumps were disturbed. But now that you have a sensor, you know the ball has hit the stumps, so why are the bails there?”Manjrekar has always been for technology playing a greater role in cricket. In 2013, he called for technology to monitor bowling actions live around the time the ICC had begun to clamp down on suspect actions. He cited more examples, like in the case of a stumping appeal where umpires are forced to check at what point the bails come off the groove while adjudicating. This he felt was adding layers of complexity to decision-making and retaining bails anymore was “defying common sense.””If you have the technology, don’t have the bails,” he said. “The other problem with bails is, when there is a stumping, you wait to it to light up and then you’re talking about whether both the bails are off the grooves and there’s just a lot of complication when you’re judging stumped or run out. Just keep it simple.”I know it won’t happen because we don’t like to change too many things. We tweak few other rules, but certain very obvious things aren’t done. Getting rid of bails may sound scandalous to lot of people but it defies common sense.”Piyush Chawla, the India legspinner, backed Manjrekar’s theory and hoped better sense would prevail. If the LED technology was available and it was trusted to give “clear evidence”, it should be taken.”When you have clear evidence, why not,” he asked :”That’s what I believe in. We clearly saw it hit the stump, but the bails didn’t fall off and he survived, and he was riding on luck, because there was a dropped catch and then this. Maybe if they got a wicket there, it was a different story altogether. There should be some rules where if the ball hit the stumps and the LED glows, it should be given out.”

Leeds make approach to sign £4m striker in January transfer window

Leeds United have made an approach to sign a striker who could cost just £4 million in January, according to a recent report. The Whites suffered a setback in their promotion bid over the weekend, so the focus will be on getting back to winning ways against Derby County on Saturday.

January could be considered a key month for the Whites, as it is a chance for Daniel Farke and co. to make one or two changes to the squad in the hope it improves their bid for promotion. It has been reported that Leeds are preparing to make more money available for Farke for when January arrives, as they are laying the “groundwork” for a winter transfer “spree”.

The focus is likely going to be on arrivals, but the Yorkshire side may also have to deal with a possible exit, as defender Max Wober is wanted by former club Red Bull Salzburg. The 26-year-old joined the Championship side in January 2023, but it hasn’t been a great spell at the club, as he suffered relegation in his first six months and then spent last season on loan at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Leeds could be open to a possible sale, as he’s struggling for regular minutes under Farke despite coming back from injury recently.

Leeds make approach to sign £4m striker in January transfer window

According to Sport5, Leeds have made an approach to sign striker Dor Turgeman in January. The 21-year-old currently plays for Maccabi Tel Aviv and has done so for all of his career, as he came through the academy at the club.

Turgeman has been in impressive form for the Israeli side this season, scoring five goals in eight league appearances, and he has also scored four goals in the Europa League in this campaign, including the qualifying stages.

This report states that the Whites are interested in a deal for Turgeman when January arrives, and it could cost them around £4.1 million to get the deal completed. It goes on to add that Leeds have already made an approach to Maccabi Tel Aviv ahead of the January transfer window opening.

But they may face difficulty in getting a deal completed, as Maccabi Tel Aviv do not want to sell until the end of the campaign.
